View Full Version : This is probably why Suzanne felt she could ask for more money
TVFactFan 08-28-2012, 03:02 AM Because of how she was featured in the eps from seasons 1 to 5. When you think about it, the eps revolved around her or Jack or Both at the same time. Janet was always the one with the minor role but the Jack and Chrissy characters were heavily featured in most eps.
So when they feature you that way how can you not think you are responsible for the show being number 1 when you have a LARGE ROLE on the show?
It's no way Joyce Dewitt could have ever felt she was in position to ask for more money because she wasn't featured as much as Suzanne on the show.
Do you agree or Disagree?
*ROGER* 08-28-2012, 03:09 AM Suzanne Sommers and John Ritter definitely had some amazing chemistry. I don't know if you ever saw the original pilot with some other blonde playing Chrissy Snow. Anyhow, it was EXACTLY the same episode (line for line) as the first show, but this chick had ZERO chemistry with John. When John and Suzanne played off each other, they were beyond amazing. It was all there with the two of them, and it all seemed to come so natural.
Mr. Television 08-28-2012, 06:02 AM Next to John Ritter, Suzanne was the biggest star of TC at the time. She was featured everywhere. There's no doubt she was a large part of why it was successful. She however was not in the Alan Alda, Carroll O'Connor class which is what she thought she was. I think it all went to her head and she thought she couldn't be replaced. The producer's obviously felt that any sexy blonde could replace her and that's what they did. Joyce could have been replaced too. The only one that couldn't was John. If he would have left, the show would have been over.
TVFactFan 08-28-2012, 01:14 PM But I guess that since she was making the same thing as Joyce and had a bigger role, that's why she asked for a increase. John Ritter didn't need to ask for a raise because he was already making the most money. So Suzanne was like....."wait, I'm always featured with John on every other ep or the episode is about me and I'm getting paid like a minor character? And on top of it the show is number 1 and I can't get a increase??
"Oh hell no, I want my money and I want it now"

I could have swore that I heard that it was in their contracts that she and Joyce had to make the same money and John had to make more. If they gave her a raise then everyone would have had to get one.
I think it just went to her head. I think the producers played hardball. I think Joyce & John were innocent bystanders who got angry because all of this threatened their show which was the #2 rated show at the time. It was all so Unnecessary. Suzanne could have made that money in other ways by the amount of public appearances she did because of the show. She just about got blackballed from network tv for most of the 1980's and ended up doing appearances in Vegas.

That was the weird part, she was already making money outside of Three's Company so what the hell was she MOANING about?

I think the big thing was Suzanne wanted money from syndication.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 09-20-2012, 12:58 AM I know I bring this up a lot, but it's interesting how in the British original the Janet character was given more time and story lines and the Chrissy character was an afterthought (even more so than Janet was in Three's Company). I'll always wonder why the Three's Company producers copied so much word for word from Man About the House but switched that aspect around.
Dianne3 09-24-2012, 04:19 PM Whatever the reason was for Suzanne asking for more money, I'm glad she did.
Chrissy was ruining the show for me when TC dumbed her down. It is to the point that episodes in seasons 3 or 4 that revolve around Chrissy, I skip.
One she left, the plots got better. Some of Jack's better plots were in Season 5.

Jack calling the chrissy character......."little chrissy" was always weird
TwinBrother 09-24-2012, 04:55 PM There was no doubt that John was the talent, which became more apparent after Suzanne left. He took it up another level in seasons 5-8.
Dianne3 09-24-2012, 05:09 PM Some of the better plots from Season 5 that I am referring to are:
1. Jack pretends he can ski
2. Jack is a busboy, his roomates think he is the head chef
3. Jack pretends to be chef ? Miller
Also one of Janet's better plots was from Season 5 - the one where her parents think she is married to Jack.

All good episodes, especially the skiing one, Downhill Chaser. Another hot guest star was on that episode, Laurette Spang.

Disagree! John Ritter was the star and even the producers said that! Suzanne's dumb blonde act was getting old fast and they should've dumped her by season 2 or 3!

EXACTLY! The best episodes were with Cindy and Terri when John was at his best!
Remember twin brother Austin?

Yup, an all time classic in the history of sitcoms. Even better than anything Lucille Ball did. It's what made Ritter a legend.
I never really liked anything John did outside of TC but TC is enough!
love80s 10-18-2012, 05:29 PM to me three's company just got boring after chrissy left the show. i cant watch seasons 6-8 because its not the same without chrissy.
Fallon97 10-19-2012, 12:20 AM I prefer the Chrissy episodes.
Big3sCompanyFan 10-19-2012, 10:07 AM The Cindy and Terri episodes were the best!
TwinBrother 10-19-2012, 12:06 PM Jack was funnier after Chrissy left. He had to be.

So true! John was amazing as Jack and that's where his legend was created! I never liked John that much in any other role he did but Jack Tripper was enough!
TwinBrother 10-19-2012, 10:55 PM I prefer John as Jack Tripper also but I'll point out that he did get nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award for his serious role in Hooperman in 1988.

That show was awful and I even recall the reviews were bad. John didn't win.
For whatever reason John was never given a big time movie comedy script during his prime like Michael J. Fox got. I know about Problem Child but the child was the star not John. John never got to be Jack Tripper fun there or in ANY other role he had!

Reviews for Hooperman were pretty good. I think it would have been a better show if they would have made it an hour instead of a half hour dramedy.
TVFactFan 10-20-2012, 11:56 AM I think his sitcom in 2002 was well on it's way to becoming a popular show until he passed away.

I think being nominated is enough to say that you did a good acting job. Plus John had other roles, tv movies, etc. He was good in Skin Deep also.
Michael J. Fox played basically the same character in his two sit com roles.

Yea ESR would have lasted 7 or 8 years if John would have lived. The show just was not the same after he died. I liked how they wrote him out and all but after David Spade joined the cast, I lost interest.

I agree it would have lasted if John had lived.
I like Spade's role in Rules of Engagement, though.

Yeah, in 2002 John said he wanted to do 8 seasons of 8SR and then retire from TV. But be honest, how many of you saw 8SR when John was alive?
I saw a little when John was alive and didn't like it so much. Of course everyone got more interested after John died. It's an ok show but John set the bar so high with TC that you compare everything to that!

I wasn't talking about that. I was referring to the hit show Family Ties and the blockbuster Back to the Future trilogy.
For whatever reason, John never had that blockbuster movie hit.

I watched it every week when he was alive. I actually watched it every week until the third season when it was banished to Friday nights. It was never going to be as great as TC. I don't think anything John could do would equal that. He did have other good roles though that kept him quite busy right up to his death. I enjoyed watching him in just about everything he did.

It's just that the humor was different. I recall watching 8SR when John was alive and some of the things the kids or John said that the audience laughed at was stupid and cheesy.
You are right. Nothing can compare to Jack Tripper since he really is the greatest sitcom character ever!

How did they write him out?
Big3sCompanyFan 10-20-2012, 01:57 PM How did they write him out?
They said he died of a heart attack while at the store or something.
Mr. Television 10-20-2012, 01:58 PM How did they write him out?
They dedicated an episode to him. His character died at the supermarket. They had quite a few episodes afterwards that had the family dealing with his death. I liked how they handled that because they didn't just kill him off and then never mentioned him like a few other sitcoms had done.
TwinBrother 10-20-2012, 03:25 PM I wasn't talking about that. I was referring to the hit show Family Ties and the blockbuster Back to the Future trilogy.

You are right. John never had the mega movie hit. But I have to tell you I enjoyed Real Men.

You saw it only has a 5.9 out 10 stars?
The plot sounds really stupid. Usually when a plot involves aliens it's bad since it's the same predictable crap over and over but because John is in it I'll check it out one day!
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-22-2012, 01:38 AM Haha I remember renting Real Men years ago just because John was in it. It's kind of silly but I liked it at the time. I haven't seen it in years. I just watched Skin Deep for the first time, though, and that one's pretty good.
Big3sCompanyFan 10-22-2012, 01:39 PM I wonder why John never got a blockbuster movie script like Michael J. Fox got?
