2. Your team is on defense and need a stop on 3rd and 12 and the QB throws a long pass and the referee waits to see if the pass is completed first and when it's incomplete he throws a flag and that team gets a new set of downs and your defense has to stay on the field longer

If I was a quarterback and needed 11 yards for a first down and my receivers only ran a 5 yard route, I would take off running for the 1st down.

You would have to take off running, it would make more sense to buy time and move around in the pocket so a receiver can get beyond the 1st down marker
