View Full Version : Do You Think There Will Be Metal Detectors at Movie Theaters From Now On?
Janice Johnson 07-26-2012, 09:57 PM After the Colorado shooting incident, News reports have said that there might be metal detectors installed at movie theaters to prevent mass shootings like the Colorado massacre from happening. it would be kind of unnerving to have to walk through a metal detector just to watch some movies at the movie theater.:(
A metal detector wouldn't have made a difference in Aurora. The gunman re-entered the theater from an exit door he'd propped open several minutes earlier.
Janice Johnson 07-27-2012, 02:23 AM They might put metal detectors on all of the doors, including the exits.

That's true we just lost another safe haven to go to. :(
robyrob 07-27-2012, 09:08 AM that fire exit should have been alarmed - if someone opens it, the fire alarm is supposed to go off and the place would have been evacuated while he was running back out to his car to go get his guns.
old grouch 07-27-2012, 03:52 PM At this rate, there will be metal detectors at the supermarket.
Coffeecup 07-27-2012, 08:39 PM You said it, Janet. Supermarkets next.
At this rate, we should all stay closed up in our houses. Don't invite anyone in, can't be sure they are all right.

Can you post a link to at least one of these news reports?
gilligan fanatic 07-27-2012, 09:48 PM I would think schools would get them before movie theaters. I doubt it happens though.

Schools, especially high schools and middle schools in most major cities, have had metal detectors for years. That being said, their success rate is debatable.
As a previous poster stated, metal detectors wouldn't have prevented the Aurora tragedy, but an alarm on the fire door would have put a kink in that loser's plans.
We can't hide from the filth of society, or else we let them win. The shooting in Colorado motivated me and many others to go out to the theaters last weekend to show that we aren't afraid to live our lives.
Brad Russ 07-29-2012, 11:09 AM I certainly wouldn't be against it, but my guess is that some will and some won't, just like when all the school shootings of the late 90's happened, many schools did start adding metal detectors, while some didn't. I think many of the larger and better known theatres will, while the rest most likely won't. If after over a decade has passed, and all schools haven't implimented metal detectors after all the shootings that have occurred, then I seriously doubt all movie theatres will add them after this one tragic incident.
ShamelessFanGirl 07-29-2012, 07:44 PM I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
duckie 07-29-2012, 07:51 PM No, I dont think they should just because one incident.
Regulus 07-30-2012, 07:33 AM I agree the Rear Exits should be Alarmed, and if the alarms go of Ushers would IMMEDIATELY direct everyone to evacuate.
JamesG 07-30-2012, 07:49 AM That's true we just lost another safe haven to go to. :(
The sad reality is that nowhere is 100% safe.
We shouldn't let that fear interfere with our everyday lives though.
Tobes 07-30-2012, 08:43 AM Having metal detectors would potentially make it safer but I believe this was an isolated incident. People aren't going to theaters to hurt anyone or shoot anyone.
Coffeecup 07-30-2012, 05:22 PM Speaking of fire exits in public places. I thought if you pushed a door to open, it would immediately make a sound. Isn't that the purpose of the door to alarm people that there is an emergency. So how did James open the door from either inside or outside without a sound going off? It somewhat tells me the fire exit door are soundless. Hmmm
Regulus 07-30-2012, 05:59 PM I've seen many people use those exits after a movie is over to get to their cars, which are parked behind the theater. (I also hear of kids who'd use those doors to let in their friends, free of charge) But they are intended to be used as EMERGENCY Exits, and will most likely be rigged to trigger an alarm is opened. No system is 100% Effective, but if it works 99.9% of the time, then it's doing pretty good. Incidents such as this often trigger safeguards to prevent further incidents after a tragedy occurs. :( I remember there used to be a time you could walk right up to an Airline Gate without going through a Metal Detector or having your bags X-Rayed, but after several planes were "Highjacked", they required the extra measures, and one could no longer see a passenger off or greet them at the gate. Many thing you see and take for granted, such as "Ordinary" Doors adjacent to Revolving Doors, and "Exit" Lights, were the results of Disasters, some of which had death tolls in the hundreds.
Janice Johnson 08-01-2012, 09:40 PM Bump.
Schmoopie 08-02-2012, 03:10 AM I found a link to this article about metal detectors in movie theaters, but I couldn't find any real fact based articles. Most of the stuff I found online was speculation, but it's interesting reading. It's sad that its come to this, but it might not be such a bad idea.
