View Full Version : Some restaurant chains that left your area that you miss
GARFIELDKOOL 07-21-2012, 01:00 PM Damon's grill and sports bar www.damons.com The food was awesome! Great ribs and chicken.
Churches chicken. They left here in the mid 80s, but I still remember how they taste.
isiahthomas 07-21-2012, 03:13 PM Church's chicken had some good chicken. Their chicken kinda tastes like Popeye's. I like Popeye's chicken. I miss Shakey's restaurant. There was one in the Alexandria, Virginia area in the late 80's. Their all you can eat buffet was very good. They had macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, lasagne, spaghetti, pizza, tacos. I definitely miss that place.
biffbronson 07-21-2012, 04:18 PM I miss Brown's Chicken -- like their old ad said, "it tastes better!"
I do like Popeye's though as well. I've developed cravings for their spicy!
Janice 07-21-2012, 04:53 PM For almost a decade, we had an Outback right down the street from my home, but they closed it. Outback's are still in Massachusetts, just not so handy for me. I miss it. Sometimes we'd go for just appetizers and desserts. Coconut shrimp, potato skins, some liked the Bloomin' Onion but too greasy for me. Their apple/cinnamon/vanilla ice cream dessert was out of this world. :happyface
mets82 07-21-2012, 05:50 PM I actually had a pretty good thing going. I had a Subway, D'Angelos, Blimpie and Quiznos all right near me. Now, Blimpie and Quiznos is gone. Quiznos had excellent food but near me anymore. There still in Conneticut but still.
duckie 07-21-2012, 06:12 PM I wish Fuddruckers and Whataburger were still around, both had awesome burgers, especially Fuddruckers. I used to love Rax Roast Beef restaurants, but they went defunct back in the early eightys, although someone told me a few years ago that one still existed up North some where. I like Bojangles chicken but they are no longer in my area, they also had some really good sausage bisquits as well. I really miss Pizza Inn, i thought they had the best pizza around.
JamesG 07-21-2012, 07:07 PM I miss the Taco Bell that was near me. They are around but not in walking distance to where I live.
I haven't had Taco Bell in over a decade.
gilligan fanatic 07-21-2012, 07:27 PM Red Hot and Blue BBQ. They have the best potato salad ever. Ours closed a couple of years ago and the next closest one is about 40 miles away.
icecream 07-21-2012, 08:08 PM Sonic. They've left Fort Wayne TWICE now. Both times they were doing great business so who knows why they closed. :(
Mr. Television 07-21-2012, 10:17 PM I wish there was a Godfathers Pizza around here. I haven't had any since the mid 80's in NC. That was always my favorite pizza.

I love Godfathers pizza. I practically lived on it when I was a teenager. It was always pizza at godfathers and a movie. Luckily there is still one left in my area. But 2 also left. I miss Whataburger and Popeye’s from when I briefly lived in Arizona. And from here A&W and Dunkin Donuts if that counts oh also Skippers fish and chips.
treky 07-22-2012, 12:17 AM I wish RUSTLERS STEAK HOUSE was still around.

I think the closest Godfathers to me is about 2 hours away. I used to call up the local radio station sports show and answer trivia questions because they gave away free pizza's from Godfathers. Good times.
Yea I wish my town had a Dunkin Donuts. There's one over in the next town but I don't get over there much.
Jaqui-Michel 07-22-2012, 01:44 AM I miss Church's Chicken too, especially the wings and that crazy pepper. There was another chain that left my area when I was a kid in the early 80's called Gino's. They served the best burgers. I still remember the taste now and decades have past.
GARFIELDKOOL 07-22-2012, 09:18 AM Sonic. They've left Fort Wayne TWICE now. Both times they were doing great business so who knows why they closed. :(
Sometimes high taxes in a certain town could do places in. There was this Popeye's restaurant so close to me did excellent business! One day it closed without warning. Come to find out the suburb it was located had the highest town taxes and the owner closed it. That sucked. I have to go to a further and smaller location now for Popeyes.

There are way too many Dunkin Donuts near me. I don't even go to any. Can't remember when the last time I went there. They aren't the same. If you have a Wegman's supermarket near you, that's the best place to get doughnuts.
Wegmans is based here in my city, but I know they've been expanding in Pennsylvania and into the Maryland D.C. area over the years.

We just got a Wegmans here in Virginia about two or three years ago. Everybody loves it.

I never heard of Wegman's . I wonder how far they are from me? I do go to Martin's Supermarket here in town and get doughnuts. The only problem is that they don't have much variety. I get the same ones over and over.

Yeah I hear everyone in that area loves it.

Does it show any Wegmans near you?
Mr. Television 07-22-2012, 03:19 PM Does it show any Wegmans near you?
It looks like the closest store to me would be the one in Frederick, MD. That's 40 minutes away.

Don't know if you have a vehicle, but one of these days, take the trip. Wegmans is worth it. The best produce and bakery. Very high quality food. Chinese wokery, ready made subs, Wegmans has it all.

It does sound good. I don't go up to Frederick too often but I might drive up there. I usually go up there to go to the mall, usually around Christmas time. I'm always looking for new food. lol

Yeah, we always have friends and relatives that come from out of town and Wegmans is one of the first places they want to go to.
A little off topic, but I wish I live in Redskin territory like you. Won't be able to this year, but in 2013, I am going to take a trip to a home game at Fed Ex. lol

Yea I get the Redskins on tv every week. lol I want to go to the Cowboys-Ravens game this fall but I don't know if I'll be able to. They only come up here every so often. I've only been to one NFL game and that was back in 1999 between the Ravens and Browns. I'd love to see a Cowboys game.
biffbronson 07-22-2012, 07:26 PM I had a Subway, D'Angelos, Blimpie and Quiznos all right near me. Now, Blimpie and Quiznos is gone.
I hit a nearby Blimpies once in a while. They're located inside a Marathon gas station. Once in a while, they offer a buy-one-get-one-free coupon in the Sunday paper coupon section.
angiefan 07-22-2012, 10:42 PM damon's. dad said they didn't have enough food when we brought take out. it was plenty for me. dunkin donuts, krispy kreme.
angiefan 07-22-2012, 10:46 PM ruby tuesdays,quizno's,and schlotsky's deli.
RoryGilmore 07-23-2012, 10:54 AM My college town had some of the best food that I dearly miss
There was a chinese place called New Kahala that was such a dive it was cash only but DELICIOUS and there was also a local deep dish pizza place called Quatros that was out of this world. I will totally have to have both if I ever end up back in that town.
jasonbigley 07-24-2012, 11:14 PM We used to have............
KFC (closed 1982)
Red Barn (closed 1986)
Dominoes Pizza (closed 1993 or 1994)
Dominoes Pizza (again) (closed 2004)
Ponderosa (closed 2007)
Little Ceasar's Pizza (closed 1997)
Sometimes I wonder when Friendly's will leave us because I heard the corporation itself filed chapter 11 and they closed a bunch of them in the Boston Massachusett's (sp?) area.
hawkeye123 07-24-2012, 11:41 PM I thought of a few more. Chuck wagon, Brown Derby, Main street pizza.
Family Ties Forever! 07-25-2012, 12:39 AM Restaurant chain that used to be in the area:
Red Lobster
They have the best biscuits. Their fried shrimp is really good. There is very little seafood that I like.
ponytail 07-25-2012, 06:23 AM Bob's Big Boy. I miss their combo plate.
duckie 07-25-2012, 09:19 AM I miss Denny's, they closed down about ten yeara ago. They had the best breakfast in town, and were open 24/7.
Dude111 06-07-2021, 02:56 AM One I mi$$ is Ponderosa.. Then they changed thier name to BACK HOME BUFFET (And I loved thier mac and cheese) and then sadly went outta business http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/images/smilies/frown.gif
Another one is COUNTRY BUFFET .. I loved thier terikyi chicken wings amoung other things...
GentlemanJim 06-07-2021, 11:11 AM I miss the original Burger King from back when they were still good, and not using highly engineered blubber calling it "meat".
I also miss Quiznos, Denneys, Azars (Big Boy franchisee), KooKooRoo, and Woolworth's lunch counter
Dude111 06-07-2021, 06:54 PM Ya thats right Jim....
We used to goto BK every friday and it was delicious!!!!!!!
Burger King. I went there for my high school graduation dinner back in 2017, and it closed a few years later.
AMackII 06-14-2021, 03:51 AM I once had Hardee’s in Saint Ann while I’m at work but it had been closed down since Last Summer.
Dude111 06-14-2021, 05:34 PM I havent eaten at a Hardees in many years!!
Are there hamburgers still g00d??
SledgeBarone 06-14-2021, 09:08 PM Royal Fork and Chuck Wagon. I love the classic all-you-can-eat buffets. Old Country Buffet not as much, as their main courses became really watered down over the years.
I guess I miss pizza hangouts like Pietro's Pizza, Pizza Haven, and Godfather's Pizza, but that was mainly for the arcades when I was a kid rather than the food.
For seafood, I miss Sea Galley and Skipper's.
Bonniegirl 06-14-2021, 09:26 PM I miss Bob's Big boy , Red Lobster , Alcapulco Mexican restaurant and a lot of Sizzlers closed down too !:(
I miss Quizno's. Their Chicken Carbonara was the greatest sub.
I miss Godfather's Pizza. It went out of business in the late 80's when their parent company went bankrupt. They had the thickest, cheesiest pizza, it was so good. There's a different Godfather's Pizza in southern Kentucky but it's nothing like the one we had here in the 80's.
OH Nuts! 06-15-2021, 08:30 PM Boston Market
RetroGuy2000 06-15-2021, 09:10 PM Quizno's, Outback, and IHOP shut down here. I miss all of 'em.
KurtfromPitts 06-16-2021, 10:33 AM Rax Roast Beef Restaurants.
swany13 06-18-2021, 11:30 AM hometown buffet
RetroGuy2000 06-18-2021, 11:50 AM Bishop's Buffet.
TSMIV 06-18-2021, 11:51 AM I miss Quizno's too. Are there any of those left anywhere?
Another one I miss is Orange Leaf Yogurt.
JamesG 06-18-2021, 04:39 PM I never got the chance to eat there, but I wanted to as I've heard good things about it - Wahlburgers.
They had a spot in Coney Island that closed in 2017 and a Times Square location never opened.
I believe the closest one to me is on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ.
SledgeBarone 06-19-2021, 03:22 AM I guess I miss pizza hangouts like Pietro's Pizza, Pizza Haven, and Godfather's Pizza, but that was mainly for the arcades when I was a kid rather than the food.
Another place like that was Shakey's Pizza.
I also miss Winchell's Donuts, although to be honest the newer-style donut shops blow it away.
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned any grape seed extract joints! :spit: :rotflmao:

We had a Shakey's Pizza here in the 70's to early 80's. They wore red & white shirts or vests with white straw hats I believe. It was very popular with the nearby college students and the military soldiers. I ate there a few times once I got my drivers license. My parents would never take us, too noisy for them.
