View Full Version : Three's Company or Friends?
Buffyboy323 07-10-2012, 11:53 PM http://cotc-massmediab.blogspot.com/2009/05/threes-company-vs-friends.html
"The sterotypes and generalizations had similarities. Jack Tripper was more like Joey, a ladies man and really out going and popular. Janet had a personality more like Monica in being considered the ugly duckling of the show and was more conservative. Chrissy was more like Phoebe, high strung, outgoing and energetic with alot of life. Teri had more of a personality like Rachel, educated and from money with a lot of intelligence. Sexual content has changed drastically, and that is probably the largest difference between these two television shows."
While there are similarities, I think these two are unique in their own right. To me, both seem like they were the "sexier" sitcoms of their generation. The young, "hip" series of their time. There's something about these two shows that have kept them extremely popular in syndication after all these years. Which do you think is the better sitcom, Three's Company or Friends? Or which is your favorite of the two?

I think Friends is the best and, it is also my fav. Friends was a more realistic show. Both of them we're absolutely hysterical. But friends could also take it to a whole different level. That being said Jack Tripper was probably the best character of them all with Chandler Bing coming in right behind him.
Mr. Television 07-11-2012, 12:28 AM Well considering Three's Company is one of my favorite shows and I loathe Friends...there's your answer. lol
hawkeye123 07-11-2012, 12:33 AM I’ve seen every episode of friends at least twice. Every time I see it I laugh.
It is one of my top 10 favorite shows of all time.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 07-11-2012, 12:53 AM Well, Three's Company is my favorite sitcom of all time ever. It is my heart and soul. I enjoy Friends, but many things about it also really annoy me (the Ross and Rachel stuff drives me crazy. Super annoying and super not into it).
And omg, Jack is not Joey. He's more of a Chandler/Ross/Joey hybrid than anything.
But I mean, if you want to know the full extent of my feelings, see paragraph 5 of the following picture (actually part of a meme) that I created a couple years ago that I have provided a link to out of respect for language sensitive users.

Mr. Television 07-11-2012, 01:01 AM I’ve seen every episode of friends at least twice. Every time I see it I laugh.
It is one of my top 10 favorite shows of all time.
I tried to like Friends. I watched it for a whole year when it first came on hoping I'd like it but I just couldn't get into it. And then when all these other imitator sitcoms popped up it made me hate it more. I do love the theme song ( one of the best of all time) and Rachel and Monica were hottt. lol
I never saw the similarities between TC and Friends though except that they were the sexier shows of their generation. lol
hawkeye123 07-11-2012, 01:05 AM Hahaha I completely agree with you about Jack being more of hybrid of Chandler and Joey. Jack has a sense of humor more like chandler I think. Plus the whole looks thing lol I mean Joeys Italian.
TVFactFan 07-11-2012, 01:06 AM I liked both shows equally because they both fell into that category of TV shows I love which is "FUN SHOWS"
What could have made Friends better is if they waited to pair up Ross/Rachel and Monica/Chandler in the last season
What could have made Three's Company better is not having the landlord seen but just referred to
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 07-11-2012, 01:07 AM Hahaha I completely agree with you about Jack being more of hybrid of Chandler and Joey. Jack has a sense of humor more like chandler I think. Plus the whole looks thing lol I mean Joeys Italian.
Oh yeah. I'd place him at a Chandler before any of the rest.
duckie 07-11-2012, 05:29 AM Three's Company is far better than Friends! IMHO
Big3sCompanyFan 07-11-2012, 06:04 AM Well considering Three's Company is one of my favorite shows and I loathe Friends...there's your answer. lol
LOL..me too. I tried watching Friends but it never made me laugh even once and they have no character like Jack Tripper.
3's Company is the far superior show and it's not close!
*ROGER* 07-11-2012, 06:43 AM That being said Jack Tripper was probably the best character of them all with Chandler Bing coming in right behind him.
Jack Tripper was the best and Chrissy Snow was even funnier than Chandler Bing.
Big3sCompanyFan 07-11-2012, 09:14 AM Jack Tripper was the best and Chrissy Snow was even funnier than Chandler Bing.
Jack Tripper was the best but I saw no character on Friends even remotely like Jack Tripper!
LUNCH 07-11-2012, 09:18 AM No contest,"Three's Company".Threes' Company is a very good show,a classic. As far as Friends goes,it's un-watchable in my opinion.
BigManMike 07-11-2012, 10:23 AM Friends is ok, but I like Three's Company way better. It's one of my favorite sitcoms.
Will and Grace Fanatic 07-11-2012, 11:59 AM I like both of them. But Friends was overrated. However Threes company was just so laugh out loud funny.
Big3sCompanyFan 07-11-2012, 02:44 PM Wow, TC is killing Friends 11 to 1!
hawkeye123 07-11-2012, 03:26 PM Jack Tripper was the best and Chrissy Snow was even funnier than Chandler Bing.
I don't agree with that. But you are entitled to your own opinion. I might be in the minority. But I think Friends was the better show by far. And I would put Chandler way above Chrissy on the funny meter. I think it's fairly obvious most of you are from an older generation.

I was a teen when TC was on the air and it was always my favorite sitcom. I am from the same generation as the cast of Friends though. They just never appealed to me. I liked Seinfeld better.

I love all 3 shows. But I like Seinfeld and Friends better then Three's company. I would rank them in that order. Seinfeld, Friends, Three’s company. And I have seen every episode of all 3 shows. I rank Seinfeld ahead of Friends. But I would still say Friends was the more diverse show.

Just ftr, I'm 23. I still prefer Three's Company. I like the characters better and I find it funnier. That's not age, that's just preference.

In your particular case, yes that is true. But I have trouble believing that everybody has really seen every episode of both shows. If they have then I apologize. I just really find it hard to believe, because friends won countless awards. It lasted 10 seasons and, it was in the top 10 every single season. I guess what I’m really trying to say, is I don’t get how anyone could not like friends.

Why would everyone have to see every episode of each show to know if they like it or not. I actually gave Friends more of a chance then I've given other sitcoms. I even watched the final episode because the rest of America was. lol I never really cared what awards certain shows won. I haven't watched an emmy show since the 1980's.
Big3sCompanyFan 07-11-2012, 09:05 PM Talk about a rout! It looks like Hawkeye is the only one who prefers Friends!
TC is ahead 14 to 1!

Because when you watch every episode week by week, then you are much more involved. With the characters and, what’s going on in the show. I only brought up the awards and ratings to prove how successful it was. And how many other people besides me we're watching it, if you say you gave it a chance. You gave it a chance. But there are a lot of other people voting besides just you two :)
hawkeye123 07-11-2012, 09:11 PM Like the guy above. Who I can't stand said. It’s 14 to 1. I think that's kind of a small number to really matter, compared to all the fans of each show in the world. But brag if you like.
MRPITT 07-11-2012, 09:33 PM I like both shows but have been watching Three's Company for over 30 years and it is one of my all time favorites.
icecream 07-11-2012, 09:34 PM I guess what I’m really trying to say, is I don’t get how anyone could not like friends.Just because you love Friends doesn't mean others will. I don't expect everyone to like my favorite shows.

That seems like the case here cats, and I’m not expecting anyone too. It's a fact that millions of others besides me do. They are just apparently not voting in the pole lol
broadmoor 07-11-2012, 09:52 PM I have a pretty strong preference for "Three's Company." Gave "Friends" many, many chances over the years, but I just found the characters too annoyingly self-absorbed. It's a problem I find with many, many of the more modern-era sitcoms. So often, characters come across more like stunted grade-school children obsessed with their immediate desires, accompanied by endless strings of snarky, cynical put-downs directed towards anyone or anything impeding these desires. It really wears thin with me. "Three's Company" could be a bit cheesey at times, with its farcical plotlines and such, yet I regard the characters as vastly more likeable and winsome. Given the choice, I would hugely prefer spending time with Jack and the gang, as opposed to sitting on the "Friends" couch and listening to all that tiresome emoting and me-me-me chatter.

I can.
Friends was stupid and NOT funny! Plus they never had a character like Jack Tripper!

I don't think the friends charecters we're like that. I know none of them we're deep down. They we're all for the most part good people with good morals.
hawkeye123 07-11-2012, 10:03 PM I can.
Friends was stupid and NOT funny! Plus they never had a character like Jack Tripper!
Your opinion means absolutely nothing to me. After what you said about my religion. Friends had lots of great characters. As a matter of a fact every single one of them was great. And it was by far one of the funniest shows ever in history.
*ROGER* 07-11-2012, 10:20 PM Jack Tripper was the best but I saw no character on Friends even remotely like Jack Tripper!
^ True!
Nobody compared to the adorable and hilarious Jack Tripper! EVERY character on Friends was whiny and self-absorbed.
hawkeye123 07-11-2012, 10:26 PM I don't agree with that at all. At times they we're whiny and self-absorbed. But so is everyone in the world and, so was Jack Chrissy and Janet at times.
For the most part every one of the Friends characters was a good person. And it actually showed quite a lot, especially in there interactions with each other.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 07-11-2012, 11:30 PM In your particular case, yes that is true. But I have trouble believing that everybody has really seen every episode of both shows. Well awards don't mean anything if you ask me. They so often do not go to the right people or show. I'm not saying Friends didn't deserve some recognition, I just really don't care about the awards.
I mean, I know plenty of people who can't stand Friends lol. And they're not just older people. I grew up with the show, I enjoy it, but I don't find it perfect by any means. I like it, but I can understand people who don't, and I just leave it at that. People just have different tastes.
Buffyboy323 07-11-2012, 11:34 PM Friends is the "better" show - as far as awards, ratings, and recognition/acclaim. It's also "better" as far as character development and story arcs go. However, Three's Company is my favorite of the two, and I've always preferred it to most sitcoms.
Both shows presented the change in decades VERY well, IMHO. And at the same time, both seem timeless (some episodes more than others). I don't agree with the article when comparing Jack to the guys on Friends. But I do agree with the poster above who said Chandler Bing was funnier than Chrissy. Chandler had a unique humor, which almost always seemed to work. Chrissy Snow was alright in the beginning, but became a little annoying and predictable as the show went on.
I loved that the characters on Friends made a few Three's Company references over the years, and even watched Three's Company a few times on Nick at Nite together. Both are great shows.
hawkeye123 07-11-2012, 11:44 PM I don't find it perfect either. I just like it a little better than Three’s company. But I’m going to just drop it. I know people that don’t like it too. But I don’t understand why lol to me honestly Chandler is one of the funniest actors in the business. I thought he was hysterical in that movie with Bruce Willis as well.
*ROGER* 07-11-2012, 11:47 PM honestly Chandler is one of the funniest actors in the business.
I personally think Steve Carell is one of the funniest actors in the business. :)

I agree with you there. He was great in that movie.
hawkeye123 07-11-2012, 11:50 PM I personally think Steve Carell is one of the funniest actors in the business. :)
I agree with that. He is very funny. The Office will never be the same with out him.

Are you kidding??
They demanded a MILLION dollars an episode or would've walked off the set! They're among the greediest actors ever!
hawkeye123 07-12-2012, 12:20 AM Are you kidding??
They demanded a MILLION dollars an episode or would've walked off the set! They're among the greediest actors ever!
That's total non-sense. Do you have any facts to back up that statement once so ever? W/E they we're paid. They we're well worth it.
hawkeye123 07-12-2012, 12:27 AM They we're only paid a million dollars an episode for the last few seasons. By then it was well deserved and, I’m sure that's why they we're getting paid so much. Not because of threats to walk off the set.
Buffyboy323 07-12-2012, 12:29 AM Are you kidding??

What does that make 'Frasier' then??
*ROGER* 07-12-2012, 12:31 AM I agree with that. He is very funny. The Office will never be the same with out him.
He (Steve) certainly was the best on his show. I thought he was much funnier than Jack Tripper or all those cry babies from Friends...lol. I love Jack Tripper, but Steve was much better IMO. :)

That shows how bad your tastes are. As good as Steve is I wouldn't put him on the same level as Jack or Chandler, or any of those crybabies from three's company.
That will teach me to try and be nice towards you; you only turned it into a smart mouth comment.

I truly wasn't even trying to be a smart mouth with you, so I don't know what you are talking about. I never insulted YOU or your personal tastes. I insulted a TV Show, for pity's sake. You insulted me.
You never annoyed me at all until this very moment. Why so sensitive? Seems like you jump at anyone who doesn't agree with you.
Anyhow, I thought of someone who beats them all...Jackie Gleason! Go ahead and say again how "bad" my "tastes are."

I think Michael Scott, Chandler Bing, and Jack Tripper all have very different personalities, so it makes it difficult to say who was the best. I will say I laughed out loud more from Steve Carrell's performance as Michael on "The Office." All three actors are outstanding.

You insulted a TV show and the characters in the TV show. And you know that I like them. So, therefore yes you did insult my personal tastes. And you do it constantly. Anytime you don't agree with somebody. I never attack anyone. I only defend what I think is right, whether anybody else thinks it is right or not. This post has nothing to do with Jackie Gleason. And I can't be a judge of that because he was way before my time.
Also I never say anything. Until people start acting like their opinion is a fact. And that's what you we're doing.

Dude, now I think you just need to calm down. You don't need to reply to everyone and you don't need to get so upset that other people have differing tastes and opinions. And lol, people on Three's Company being crybabies. What the actual hell?
I just - I don't see anything smart mouthy about the poster's comments. Relax. You stated your opinion, others stated theirs. Move on.
*ROGER* 07-12-2012, 01:10 AM You insulted a TV show and the characters in the TV show. And you know that I like them. So, therefore yes you did insult my personal tastes.

I agree they all have very different personalities and, that it is hard to say who is best. I like all 3 very much. I just get tired of people turning to insulting things to try and prove there point, when they have no other resource left to do so.It gets very annoying.
I still say Jack number 1 just slightly ahead of Chandler and then Steve following not too far behind.
hawkeye123 07-12-2012, 01:19 AM The simple fact of it is. A couple of these people Roger and 3scompany are jerks. So, that is why I responded the way I did. I don't like people like that.
You don't see how me saying I agree about Steve being funny and, then he instantly turns it into an insult about friends was being a smart mouth?

yankeesrj12 07-12-2012, 06:25 AM Friends.
I grew up watching Friends. To this day, I've never seen an episode of Three's Company.
neutron66 07-12-2012, 08:30 AM Three's company was a classic compared to a dull show like friends, their is nothing better then watching 2 hot women and a horny nice guy trying to control himself from sleeping with them in every episode john ritter was a very lucky man lot of men would jumped to the moon to be him for a day i no i would have if given a chance lol.

If someone bothers you that much then put them on ignore. That's the best thing to do. I didn't see any insult from Roger. Nobody's going to like everybody's favorite shows. I actually like Friends better than The Office. lol
My opinions are probably based on the fact that I think the best sitcoms aired from the 1950's-1980's. I like some 90's sitcoms. I actually loved Two Guys and a Girl. That was sort of a Friends ripoff but most people think it sucked.

Yes it was!
Don't forget all of John's hijinks, klutziness, goofyness, and physical comedy!

It was a back handed insult. I may have over reacted. I'm letting it go. I am just a big fan of Friends. I love that show. Its ok man I understand. I don't have any problem with people not liking it. The bragging and talking bad about the characters just got on my nerves.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 07-12-2012, 07:28 PM To this day, I've never seen an episode of Three's Company. Omgah, try watching it sometime. The things you have missed. neutron66 07-12-2012, 07:58 PM Friends had way to many people in the show and the episodes were kinda of a bore, now Threes Company had a different direction it shows viewers you only need 3 people to make a show great and thats what the actors did they entertained people by being wacky and at times crazy thats the reason it did good in the ratings for a long time.

Agreed. John Ritter (especially) made the show very fun to watch. Many hilarious episodes.
I actually saw the first episode when it originally aired in April, 1977. Was a regular viewer.
And, for me, the best comedy TV line-up reached its peak for the 1977-'78 season:
8 PM----- Happy Days

John was the best but he wasn't the only entertaining person on the show. I loved the Ropers and Mr. Furley. Larry was a very underrated character. And all the girl roommates were pretty good too. I think TC had one of the best casts on TV.
Mr. Television 07-13-2012, 07:45 AM Agreed.
8:30 PM-- Laverne & Shirley
9 PM----- Three's Company
9:30 PM-- Taxi
10 PM---- Starsky & Hutch (not a comedy, but in aired in prime-time)
I loved that lineup. I remember watching the first episode in primetime. I actually came across the show by accident. I was just flipping the channels. It aired on a Thursday that night.
Big3sCompanyFan 07-13-2012, 09:53 AM Omgah, try watching it sometime. The things you have missed. High tension excitement, people bumping into crap, Mr Roper's face. http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab52/Ashlee5665/Random/ropersmile3-1.gif
OMG I can't even comprehend someone who has NEVER seen a SINGLE episode of 3's Company!
Guys, admit it but I bet many of you have seen each episode MULTIPLE times like I have!
Not that I'm proud of that!

Stop shoving your opinion down people's throats, bruh.
I'll tell you what Three's Company is: it IS dumb. Brilliantly dumb. That's why it's perfect. But if this person doesn't agree, more power to them and let them live.

*ROGER* 07-13-2012, 07:58 PM Lucielle Ball said it best when she hosted The Best Of Three's Company. She said that Three's Company didn't try to solve any major problems. It just made us laugh. She was right.

Three's Company was over the top, silly, and CAMPY a lot of the time. Friends focused more on character development and relationships. Three's Company mainly focused on the plot of each episode, hardly ever fleshing out characters like Chrissy, Cindy, Furley, The Ropers, Larry, Lana. That's also the difference. Friends is the more realistic of the two. I preferred the New York City "feel" of the show too.
I'm not sure when the conversation went off the deep end, but I didn't mean to stir such a big debate. I guess that's why we're all here though - discuss, defend, debate, and spread the love of our favorite TV shows. In any case, these are both classic sitcoms with major love from their fans.
Thanks for voting in the poll!

No need for that! Just leave it open. John Ritter is helping it from beyond the grave! ;)

There's no way I'm closing it! John's doing a mighty fine job!
I relate more to the fast paced New York City vibe of Friends. But I LOVE the Santa Monica 70s/80s feel of Three's Company. I probably like Monica and Rachel's apartment more though.

Pavan 07-14-2012, 12:44 PM It's like comparing the 1992 Dream Team to the 2012 USA Basketball team. Two different eras. And like how the 1992 Dream Team had hall of famers, John Ritter and Don Knotts were that for Three's Company. No one from Friends can ever match them. Three's Company did what a sitcom was supposed to do in those days, make you laugh. You can put it on and know you'll laugh hard even after a bad day. Friends has the artistic and writing edge (like how the 2012 USA team has the athleticism), but it doesn't deliver the constant laughs as that show did.

I have to disagree that Friends didn't deliver constant laughs. I've been watching the show on Nick at Nite and TBS and I've laughed at every single episode so far. I guess it just depends on a persons taste.

I don't think Suzanne does those for TC. I saw pics of those once and Joyce and Priscilla were at the TC table.

It's the one in Burbank.

Four times a year. The next one, in August, will have "The Fonz" himself! (Not his first appearance.)

Ok, I'll check it every week.
It sucks the Burbank show has 3 times the attendees of the Chicago show!
icecream 07-15-2012, 09:13 PM I loved Henry Winkler as the Fonz. He was one of John Ritter's best friends.Henry Winkler should have replaced John Ritter on 8 Simple Rules as originally planned. Instead they went with David Spade, who ruins every show he appears on.

They really planned to do that??
But Winkler has not had a hit show since he played the Fonz and he couldn't act like that on 8SR!

I wouldn't expect Henry Winkler to act like the Fonz in 8 Simple Rules, but he still would have been much better. And it was an already established hit show, not like the new comedy he starred in on CBS.

I doubt it.
Have you seen Winkler in any role besides the Fonz? He's bland and boring which is why he's never had a hit since the Fonz.
Pavan 07-15-2012, 11:45 PM Henry Winkler was never going to "replace" him. He was set to guest star on the episode John was working on before he passed away as John's new boss. David Spade was not the replacement. There was no replacement. They added new pieces, which was James Garner and David Spade along with appearances from Suzanne Pleshette.
As far as Henry after the Fonz, he has had plenty of roles that were critically acclaimed. His turn on Royal Pains has been awesome and he was nominated for an Emmy for The Practice. Not to mention his appearances on Arrested Development. He is NOT just the Fonz. He is an excellent actor.
yankeesrj12 07-16-2012, 01:02 AM Henry Winkler's best roles weren't even on television (at least for me). I still remember him as Principal Himbry from Scream and as the dad from Holes.
Big3sCompanyFan 07-16-2012, 07:26 AM Sorry Pavan I just don't see it. I saw Winkler in that Night Shift movie and he was so boring he put me to sleep. You mentioned roles I've never heard of. Why hasn't Winkler achieved any popularity for those roles if he was so good?
Amy Yasbeck was also due to guest star as one of the kid's teacher and then John and her get in an argument! That would've been great but alas it never happened! :(

Henry Winkler was awesome in Scream!
If I remember correctly, Three's Company was "renewed" by Viacom in 2007 for five more years. Are we expecting TV Land to stop airing the show by the end of the year? Not that it really matters, since the series is complete on DVD, and airing heavily on Antenna TV. But, to be honest, I do enjoy when my shows get a lot of exposure - as awful as TV Land is. :D
Big3sCompanyFan 07-16-2012, 12:08 PM I really thought I had heard that Henry was considered to come on as an uncle after John's death.

Winkler has not had a successful comic role since the Fonz.

That was one of Winkler's best roles. His character was supposed to be a bit dull. The straight man to Michael Keaton's insane character and he pulled it off. I think people were expecting him to be like the Fonz which is a damn shame because he's a great actor. Check out the movie Heroes sometime, he was brilliant in that movie. I feel he could have been a big movie star if he wasn't typecast as the Fonz.

But that's the reality of hollywood when you have a hugely popular character.
Larry Hagman said he is "forever J.R. Ewing" even after Dallas ended. Pretty much the same is true for Winkler and the Fonz since he never had a popular role after that.
http://cotc-massmediab.blogspot.com/2009/05/threes-company-vs-friends.html
I enjoy both shows very much. Three's Company with the original trio plus the Ropers was hilarious and Friends was equally funny. It really is hard to choose but I think the writing & all the different funny scenarios on Friends gives it a slight edge.
broadmoor 07-16-2012, 05:31 PM Yeah, I'd forgotten about that... "Three's Company" being on Thursday nights, during that short, initial season in the spring of 1977. I'm not sure if I saw the very first episode, but I do recall catching the series then. The show did seem like a bit of fresh air at the time. That is, back then, you had a lot of sitcoms that were fairly harsh or abrasive, with a lot of yelling and contentious topics, like "Archie Bunker" or "One Day at a Time;" Or, there were shows with rather drab backdrops like "Kotter" or "Barney Miller." (I'm not necessarily knocking these particular shows, as they might have their own particular merits). It's just that, in comparison, "Three's Company" suddenly appeared on the scene, with its rather peppy, upbeat nature, and it really seemed to stand out.

phoebe7165 08-04-2012, 10:33 AM Friends. I watched TC as a kid and loved it!! Now I watch it as an adult and despite loving John Ritter, I just think it is way too silly. I've seen every episode of Friends, I used to have all the seasons on DVD until I was a little short on cash, and had to sell alot of them.
