There was an episode which explains it. I'm not sure which episode it was, but he lost his sight after getting into a car accident which was caused by his friend who was driving while drunk. The friend comes back asking for forgiveness and Jake is unwilling to accept it at first.

feel sorry for the blind man tho it must suck not being able to see other people when talking to them and using a cane everywhere you go in the streets its also dangerous if your by yourself more chance of being attacked by thugs.
