View Full Version : Was this a shot at Philadelphia????
TVFactFan 07-07-2012, 12:54 PM In the beginning of season 3 Ida was talking about her trip around the world because of the Bicentennial and they were going to some Historical Hot Spots like Washington D.C, Willamsburg, and Miami??
No Philadelphia??? The Liberty bell, The Besty Ross House? This had to be a joke and a shot at the city at the time.
Brian Damage 07-07-2012, 01:46 PM I don't think it was necessarily a shot at Philly, more like a Jewish joke about Miami.

TVFactFan 01-02-2013, 07:04 PM I realized at the time this episode aired Philadelphia wasn't on the map yet because the movie Rocky had no been out in the theaters yet
biffbronson 07-16-2013, 12:08 AM Yeah, but the Phillies were really good -- they were winning the Eastern Division of the National League with Mike Schmidt and Greg Luszinski. They had plenty of World Series potential, but the Reds and Dodgers got in the way back then -- the NL West kept getting the pennant until the '79 Pirates took it (and went all the way, of course!).
I'll note here too that Nancy Walker was born in Philly.

LOL you sound just like my dad. He's lived in Pittsburgh his whole life, as most of our family still does, and was rooting for Philly at a time when Willie Stargell and "We Are Family" was setting the city on fire. Being a die-hard Phillies fan deep in Pirate country for 2 decades finally paid off for him when they won they won the Series the next year. After the '80 World Series, he lost interest in pro ball but the way the Pirates are playing this year he's back to rooting for the now-crummy Phillies; consequently EVERY 3rd baseman fails in comparison to Mike Schmidt according to him. Man I could BS endlessly about yesteryear's baseball. Baseball might be the only thing I enjoy as much as film & television.

HUH????? I'm saying she reminds me of the white ladies in south philly
biffbronson 07-23-2013, 05:04 PM I just meant that apparently she had a pretty rough upbringing, not a privileged one. Is South Philly where the "mean streets" are?

South Philly has a nice section and a bad section. She just has that look of someone I would see in a supermarket in South Philly

The 70s was also the era of back to back (74 and 75) Stanley Cups for the Philadelphia Flyers. They had some good star players like Bernie Parent, Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber, and Reggie Leach but they were best known as the "Broad Street Bullies", led by chief goons Dave "The Hammer" Schultz, Bob "Hound Dog" Kelly and Andre "Moose" Dupont, where fighting and brawling became a team trademark that they've never let go of since. This was also when Kate Smith would fire up the crowd and the team by singing "God Bless America" before each game, giving a new meaning to the old saying "It isn't over until the fat lady sings."
D-Dey 07-23-2013, 11:42 PM Speaking of Philadelphia, I've asked this before, but which TV show had a clip of Suburban Station in the opening theme?

I almost thought it might've been "Angie," but I have serious doubts about that.
