View Full Version : I am boycotting Nick at Nite, effective February 1

Remember the good old days of Nick at Nite? Remember the great classic shows they had in the early and mid-1990s? Since the 21st Century has begun, they have gone absolutely way downhill. I remember when they used to air great shows like Mork and Mindy, Mister Ed, Rhoda, the Mary Tyler Moore Show, Get Smart, among others. That was a long time ago. Nowadays, they just plain stink. They refuse to listen to fans, they make false promises, and they are airing shows that are still in syndication on many local stations in the country. They also air Kids Say the Darndest Things when they just announced that Diff'rent Strokes is coming back. It is unfortunate how one great station has understandable confused fans leaving the station in droves.
Starting Friday morning at 12:00 midnight (pacific time), I am boycotting Nick-at-Nite. I refuse to watch it. I used to like the network, but now TV Land is a better alternative. If anybody agrees with my opinion about Nick-at-Nite, feel free to post a reply.

Boycotting N@N won't change the programming but I could see why you want to. N@N doesn't care about what the people think. They just pick what they think will get the best ratings. They are picking up shows too quickly in a couple of years they will be airing full house and roseanne. They have to stop right now! They should only be able to put shows on that premiered before 1985....

I understand that one person boycotting NAN won't do any good, but with the way NAN is going, I don't think anybody would watch it anymore. I have seen I don't know how many complaints on these message boards about NAN and I can see that I am not alone when I say I hate the Cheers Network.

I do like Cheers. It is one of my favorite shows. But where I live, I can catch the show on KUSI in San Diego. It seems out of place on Nick at Nite, though.
I must admit that Cheers is a really good show. It was a great show when it originally aired and it is still a great show today. If Nick at Nite was patient and waited about 5-7 years from now, it would fit the line-up well. It has been nine years since the show's series finale. When Nick at Nite first debuted in about 1985, many of the show's were about 20 years old. The one exception during it's early years was Mork and Mindy. It first aired on NAN in 1991, less than a decade after it was canceled.
I'm sorry if I upset you frasierlilithcheers. I didn't intend to insult Cheers. I certainly didn't mean to offend any Cheers fans.

I haven't wathed N@N since......Its so long ago that I can't remember but maybe if enough people stop watching they might change? Who knows with them. As for Cheers I think one of the reasons some people seem to hate it so much is because it takes away from other shows on N@N. Not to mention that those shows aren't on any local channels but Cheers is for most people some people don't and so they watch on N@N. I think if N@N stoped showing as much as it did more people would like it better? I know I would like it a little more.

The Brady Bunch is corny. It seems to unrealistic to watch sometimes. Who brings a dog, a cat, a doll, 6 kids and a housekeeper to a honeymoon? THE BRADY BUNCH! Anyways it is corny but it is a classic too. I only watch Pop-Up-Brady because I like to read the pop-ups. Cheers is still my fav. N@N show.

I agree! Cheers is the funniest show on N@N bar none!!! N@N should be kept seperate from TVLand. Let the classic sitcoms like MTM show, Newhart, Mr. Ed, Odd Couple and the rest stay on TVLand and let the more modern classics like Cheers, Family Ties, Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes stay on Nick. That way everybody's happy :-) Cheer's is way funnier than the Brady Bunch(and they didn't need a laugh track either)

Three's Company is the best show on N@N.It has everything.I mean how many shows actually had Lucille Ball say it is one of her favorite shows. She said it was her kind of comedy.I always thought Cheers was funny. Not laugh out loud funny like TC or L&S not funny-because-it-is-stupid like "Brady" and "Friends".It has it's on little section.Nan should only air the 1982-90 seasons. That's the same amount of seasons and runtime as "Newhart" which was on NAN also.Maybe I'll delve into the show some more till the point I can name episodes like I can with TC.So in conclusion I like "Cheers" I think it is nice and funny.

Can somebody please tell me what's so funny about The Brady Bunch? Mr Ed? Leave it to Beaver? etc, etc. Many of those sitcoms are dated and the jokes don't stand up in this day and age. Old sitcoms like the Odd Couple, I Love Lucy and the Honeymooners are the rare exceptions to that rule. I just don't get it?!? Perhaps it's because I'm a Generation X'er. Then again, I still find Lucy, Honeymooner's and the Odd Couple hillarious. I used to bust a gut laughing at the Facts of Life when it was on network tv (I still enjoy the reruns) but I'll admit it isn't as funny now as it was back then. Let me know.

JT
02-05-2002, 09:46 PM
That's just it with you Generation X'ers. You don't know what real comedy is.Almost every single current show stars a group of mid-20 somethings who work at the same place or live in the same apartment building. There are few exceptions that are good sitcoms like "Reba","Sabrina","Maybe It's Me","Raising Dad","Raymond","Simpsons","Malcolm","My Wife and Kids","The Bernie Mac Show","That 70's Show" and maybe "The 80s Show".But the other half of that is crap like "Will & Grace","Friends","Just Shoot Me","Frasier","Dharma and Greg","Off Centre" and that other stupidness.Real comedy was gentler.Back in the old days they didn't say those certain words on TV.I was flipping through channels one day and I passed my WB affiliate and Friends was on and in the 3 seconds it was on I heard the "b word".In the old days they didn't rely on episodes like that."Leave it to Beaver" and"Mr.Ed" were relying on the sillyness and wackyness that made the era one of the best eras in television. You can hear jokes about how loose a woman is or how sissy a man acts on current television. But on classics you can hear jokes about a blonde wishing a couple "Little House on the Prarie",a girl who shoved a pie in another's face and that goodness.Another thing I noticed is that there is no more physical comedy."I Love Lucy","Three's Company","Laverne & Shirley","Gilligan's Island" and others provided the kind of comedy that makes you laugh.Though I liek shows that are based mainly jokes but not the kind of jokes current TV has.Back when there were more gameshows in the daytime, back when the networks came up with creative jingles and other stuff. That's just how happy I am!

To all of you who say the Brady Bunch isn't funny I have to agree with you but I still like the show its not that terrible. As for the best show on N@N right now I would have to say is Three's Company. I have to admit Cheers isn't the worst thing I have ever seen but I just don't get what was supposed to be so funny about a bunch of people who were just sitting around doing dumb things. I just don't see whats so great about that show especially the later episodes I just can't watch those at all without wanting to scream. The same with alot of shows today like Friends. I don't see whats so funny about that show either and alot of the ones that are on today. Now that was just my opinion.

The Brady Bunch is Righteous in its Comedic Timing, which is more important than the jokes themselves. Amen.

Lack of comedic timing will cause any joke to bomb; yea it is as if you burped in church.

These complaints against Nick@Nite, well they ARE getting old !!!

I agree that the quality of Nick has gone way downhill ( its true with many other cable channels , TBS & TNN are perfect examples ) but these complaints ,its like beating the same drum over and over. Boycott all you want but Viacom will NOT bring back the old days when one can catch Car 54 or Mr. Ed on Nick@Nite . With advertisers and tv consultants
telling the networks they should reach the urban, generation X population, highly doubt you will catch those shows on TV Land either. The demographics just dont favor those b/w classics.

I think the sitcoms have changed today then the classics and I really don't mind. Sitcoms are situation comedies and all the sitcoms on the air state that. N@N is not necessarily a classic tv network "All Sitcoms, All Nite"

Brian Damage

say what you want, but N@N is more successful than ever before. A boycott is useless because it won't change anything. Blaming Friends for the downfall of sitcoms is ridiculous! Shows like the Brady Bunch, Gilligans Island, Leave it to Beaver, Mr. Ed etc. do not relate to todays day and age. You can blame society for that all you want, but, those shows are out of place. Shows like Cheers and Three's Company are not dated and are still funny. Leave it to Beaver is not. Nor is the Brady's or Mr. Ed. They might be cute for nostalgia, but that's it. I'm not a viewer of Friends, but when a show gets a 23.5 rating, it must be doing something right.(Especially in this day and age of cable)

Actually, N@N (Ratingswise) was at it's peak early 2001, with "Diff'rent Strokes", "The Brady Bunch", "The Facts of Life", and "three's company" in primetime..and it was when the schedule had a lot of old shows. In March there was variety, from "The Beverly Hillbillies" to "Diff'rent Strokes"...now, it's just a plain Jane drinking lemonade network. And IMO, Donna Reed has made me laugh more with me just seeing two episodes of her show then "Friends" has EVER made me laugh in MY lifetime..and I've seen more then two episodes!

The only people who watch that Friends stupidity is those 20 somethings who think it is funny because they say stupid stuff. So in about 20 years Friends is gonna be dated and unfunny? When right now it is "the perfect coolest show"?We watch what we feel like watching.Everybody does.I'm not gonna sit through an episode of "Friends" just because it's the "coolest show"!There is no such thing as cool.Unless you mean cold. And in that case "Friends" IS cool!!!!!!Because it's the coldest show I've ever seen on TV!!!!!!!!!!!!No wonder it snows in New York because they have such a cold show set there!!!!!!!!!!But like I was saying there is no such thing as cool. It's in your mind.Say there is this person at school/work.Everybody thinks (s)he is cool. But you hate (s)he.Why?Because you have your own opinion.Just because you say a show isn't funny doesn't mean it isn't funny period. You aren't the guy who says "I think this show isn't cool;therefore it isn't cool".There isn't a person like that. And saying that they are cute for nostalgia.I've noticed that in many of today's music and "hip new cool generation x shows" that there are elements from classic shows.Like in a song I hear people hum at school. The beat/musical part of the song is the same beat as the "Dragnet" theme song.So you gen x people think the people who actually watch the shows to get a laugh are geeks. We are all free to watch anything we want to may it be classic or current.I'm not gonna think one show is stupid just because you said so.Like in a song I always hear: "...I'm proud to be an American cuz at least I know I'm freeeeeee!"

Its not necessarily true that only 20 somethings watch it.. The porn parts aren't funny, and the fact that rachel got pregnant and wasn't married thats not funny. Well it can be funny but its not good to do that. Friends isn't the only show like that either. All shows nowadays when there is relationships they practically you know do it on the first date. That is false portrayl of relationships. Its just a show and no matter what anyone says 20 million people are still going to watch it each week. And I'm one of them....This is getting hold people getting mad because there shows aren't on the air and they think shows are stupid and other people don't.... Was it better when people just watched tv and didn't know about message boards?

Robert Tilton
02-08-2002, 04:27 PM
This is an interesting point.

Viacom has a Huge Tape Library of shows...and I'll bet some of them are made up of shows that are "not shown" on TV! Facts of Life for example...unless they went & sold off the rights to somebody else. I mean in a day and age where TV Rights change All The Time...who can keep up with it? So its just speculating, but if I was a Fly in the Wall at the Viacom tape Library...well.

To give an example of how a certain sports network did it:

ESPN would buy up the US TV Rights to International Soccer games and hoard them (not show em on TV) from the fans just to keep a competitor, Rupert Murdoch, from purchasing them for FOX. A Usenet search for "Mickey Mouse Sports Network" in rec.sport.soccer will give you the details.

Now its one thing for a company Not to air a Program like Car 54 or whatever because of low ratings...but...if Viacom has the rights to shows & won't air them on N@N or whatever??? I say its a mad flibbertygidget for the fans & the TV Networks deserve a good dressing down. But don't despair. I'm on to their Master Plans.

Its a common trick done by the TV Networks. Sci Fi for instance had the rights to "The Incredible Hulk". Many is the day that the great Dr. David Banner would get outraged & turn green on said Sci Fi. But much like Chuck Cunningham did on Happy Days, it seems that the Hulk (and other shows), have disappeared into the "Twilight Zone" of Television. Incredible Hulk has not aired on Sci Fi or Anywhere else in the US for Years!

This kind of Nonsence can only be stopped w/the help of the Fans. So if you wanna see a certain program (like Diff'rent Strokes), you must Master Pavanbadal Data. Why? Because its Righteous. And TV Networks change rights all the time. And keeping up with Who's showing What is a job for Superman!

Now once you find out about a network's decision making process, you must use Snail Mail not E-Mail (interns much like Bob Knight B-Ball Players "screen" it) and write said company about whatever ye so desire. Be nice & Sweet & move your Feet & be upbeat & then turn up the heat!

On the said entity in ?

Amen.

This, much like a Brady Bunch Resolution, is the Sensible Course Of Action.

Oh yeah, write the sponsors as well. This helps.

Right 4:00 on the dubdown.

That statistic brings up an interesting point. The majority on this board seem to dislike Friends yet it gets high ratings. I completely understand that not everyone likes Friends but it sure takes a beating on this board. I have always been a fan of Friends although it has gone downhill in the past few years. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind; you're entitled to your opinion. I just thought I would stick up for Friends because I don't think it is as terrible as some of you make it out to be. That's just it with you Generation X'ers. You don't know what real comedy is.

The Webster New World Dictionary Second College addition defines comedy in having to do with plays, movies, tv etc. in this way:

2)any various types of play motion picture with more or less humorous treatment of characters and situation and a happy ending.

Heres another:

5) amusing or comic event or sequence of events

To put it simply, Its something that makes you feel happy, laugh smile, etc. If you say that friends is not a comedy then Mr. Webster does not agree with you. 20 somethings aren't the only people who watch friends....that was a hypocritical remark....Just because you say so I don't think so.

I don't know who said Friends was "cool", but it's obvious some people have issues with that word. Despite JT's pure hatred for Friends, it still is a big ratings, big money juggernaut for NBC. Not only NBC, but for every station that has picked it up in syndication. Will it be dated 20 years from now? Maybe, but you can't be certain until then. I cannot and will not tell anybody what is good to watch. I personally like Honeymooners, I love Lucy, the Odd Couple and Taxi. Are those shows stupid? Who cares! So what you're saying is the 23 million people who watch it and enjoy it are stupid? You must be, after all if the the jokes are stupid, the characters are stupid and the show itself is stupid, wouldn't the people who laugh at it be stupid? Lighten up, this is television sitcoms we're talking about not world politics. Focus that anger on something useful like your work or even getting your high brow, holier than thou sitcoms back on the air! Don't worry you can do it, after all this is AMERICA!!!!!!

I'm 21 and, as you can probably tell, am not somebody who follows trends. Having said that, I'd like to point out that the reason I watch Friends isn't because it's the "no uno show;" I watch it because it's funny, refreshing, and well-written.

Watch the show?
One night I lost the remote control for my TV.And the Ch. buttons on the TV were broken so it was stuck on Friends.
And one commercial on my WB affiliate has something with one the "dudes" hanging from the one of the other "dude"'s pants and the "dude" says "My pants are falling down and I don't have any underwear on."
I have seen episodes.Many.And I hated each and every one.

JT - we agree!! :) I don't watch a show just because it gets high ratings either.
That was my whole point. I was just trying to explain to you that I watch Friends because I like it, not because it is #1. Just as you don't watch it because you don't like it. It has nothing to do with popularity or coolness. Please understand that I am not trying to make you watch Friends nor am I trying to make you like it. I understand that you don't like it and that is fine. No hard feelings, ok?

P.S. Here's a joke from the show that I think you might like (and it's not dirty):

Chandler (watching TV): Oh! I think this is the episode of Three's Company where there's some kind of misunderstanding.

(Just so there's no misunderstanding(lol), I love Three's Company too)

Well, we've come a long way from the first message of boycotting Nick at Nite.

Personally, I don't watch Nick at Nite because the only shows they air that I like (The Brady Bunch and The Jeffersons) are only on late night plus The Jeffersons is also on TV Land.

Now, I'm 20 years old and I grew up watching reruns of The Brady Bunch and The Addams Family as well as watching The Cosby Show, Who's the Boss?, ALF, The Hogan Family, Webster, Growing Pains, The Golden Girls and Family Ties when they origanally ran on each of their respective networks. For me, TV in the late 80's was fantastic, each night of the week my family sat down and watched these shows. So in general, one who grows up liking certain things, will tend to like those same things later in life.

Now, 1980's sitcoms tended to be family sitcoms, and let me tell you, I'm a sucker for family sitcoms. I like almost every one of them except for Father Knows Best, Happy Days and Full House, for some reason I just find Father Knows Best and Happy Days to be boring and Full House to be revolting.

As the 1990's came about, I found myself not liking any of new sitcoms. Perhaps due to the fact that family sitcoms were fading out. Throughout the whole decade of the 1990's I just tended to watch whatever was on. I found Home Improvement and Grace Under Fire to be okay but otherwise I stuck with reruns of my favorites (The Brady Bunch, The Golden Girls, The Cosby Show etc.) on my local stations.

Then in 1997, my family got Direct TV and I was able to revisit so many sitcoms that I truely missed. I was able to see The Addams Family, Mister Ed, Green Acres and Petticoat Junction on TV Land and watch Bewitched and The Wonder Years on Nick at Nite and see The Golden Girls (which by that time had been pulled from syndication) on Lifetime. When we got satellite, I basically stopped watching NBC, CBS and ABC and pretty much watched only Nick at Nite and TV Land.

For me sitcoms like, Friends just doesn't do anything for me. I've watched it and there are funny times, but nothing that hooks me to it. Now, I had watched Cheers when it was originally on and it too was funny at times, but again, there was nothing that prompted me to watch it over and over again in reruns like I do with The Brady Bunch, The Jeffersons and The Golden Girls.

Now discovering and or rediscovering shows is no easy task. However, it has happened to me a number of times. I re-discovered The Facts of Life and Leave It to Beaver and find them each to be fantastic. In the last two years, I discovered The Jeffersons, Good Times and Maude and find myself hooked to each one, especially The Jeffersons. One big suprise that has occured with me is the discovery of Everybody Loves Raymond. It shocks me that that show has been on since 1996. It is the only sitcom that is currently still in production that I watch.

Now getting to the point, (you say to yourselves "It's about time!") I watch the shows that I do because they make me feel good, bottomline. You watch what you wan't to watch and just because someone says The Brady Bunch or Cheers sucks, doesn't mean you should stop watching it. If there is something about a show that enthralls you, watch it.

As for humor, every sitcom is geared for a certain group and for the most part people from outside that group often become fans. Who cares about humor being relevant? I don't watch the Brady Bunch for it's humor or realism, I watch it to feel good. Why does everything have to be realistic? People scoff and say things that happened on the Brady Bunch don't happen in real life. Well, sitcoms are not real life but often they often reflect real life and the Brady family is your all american family who lived in there own world at a different time period, the 1970's. For those of you who can't identify with that world or strive for a world like that, then you probably won't like it. In the 1980's my dad owned a bar, and although I can identify with Cheers, but that's not something I wan't to strive for, being in a bar all the time, drinking and having a romance with an anal retentive barmaid. I easily could say that things on Cheers or Three's Company couldn't happen in real life just as easily as you scoff at The Brady Bunch. Personally, I think the Brady Bunch is much more realistic then Three's Company or Cheers.

Now, everyone has a different sense of humor and a joke on The Jeffersons may be funny to me but may not be, to someone else. Some may find Jack Tripper's physical humor on Three's Company funny and other's may not because everyone hasn't had the same experiences. Personally, the physical comedy on Three's Company is as funny as the physical comedy on America's Funniest Home Videos. For me, physical comedy has never made me laugh-out-loud, it's just something that I find to be staged and totally unrealistic.

As for laughing out loud, I find myself laughing out loud at Everybody Loves Raymond as well as Leave It to Beaver. I can relate to these shows and find them "laugh-out-loud funny, but I also find myself laughing out loud at Friends and Cheers, jokes don't make the show it's the setting and characters that make the show and how well the writers utilize them as well as how well you can relate to them.

This was just my two cents worth.

Here are some reasons for me not watching Nick at Nite all that much anymore.

1. THEY TOOK THE FACTS OF LIFE OFF!!!!!!!!! THAT PISSES ME OFF BIG TIME! WHY WOULD THEY TAKE THAT SHOW OFF AFTER IT"S BEEN VERY POPULAR ON THAT NETWORK?

2. I HATE THE DOUBLE TAKES. ESPECIALLY THE 2 FULL HOURS OF CHEERS EVERY NIGHT.

3. WHAT HAPPENED TO DIFFERENT STROKES?

4. THEY DON'T SHOW FAMILY TIES UNTIL 1AM/12AM CENTRAL!

5. KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS NOW ON NICK AT NITE BAD BAD BAD!

6. THE COSBY SHOW NOW ON NICK AT NITE MARCH 3RD BAD BAD BAD!

7. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HAPPY DAYS AND LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY?

8. WHAT ABOUT ALF, SILVER SPOONS, 227, AND SQUARE PEGS? THEY NEVER SHOWED FOR MORE THAN THREE WEEKS!

9. THEY NEED TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER.....PRINT THIS FORUM OFF AND SEND IT TO NICK-AT-NITE...MAY NOT DO ANY GOOD BUT IT'S WORTH A SHOT.

If they want to get a good show try putting back on Wonder Years or bring Alice to Nick-at-Nite.

Thank you

Alice, One Day at a Time, Good Times and Silver Spoons, any one of them added to Nick at Nite is one step closer to saving the sunk Nick at Nite. Double Takes are not necessary, spread things out. Show each episode of the shows once and then go through them again.

We're human beings, JT. People like different things. "Different strokes for different folks," as the saying goes (yes, I realize the irony of saying that on a sitcom message board). It's cool that you dislike Friends and it's cool that I like it.

This would be a boring world if we all enjoyed the same things, wouldn't you say?

It certainly would. We'd all look like we were living in the movie Metropolis. Every worker at the plant in that movie wore the same thing, looked the same, walked the same way. That movie was simply scary for that point alone.

so boechsner you're gonna say a girl actually getting a very famous singer to perform at the prom is realistic?I think forgetting the rent is way more realistic than that. But it's your opinion and I respect that.I don't respect the Boring Brady Bunch but I do respect your opinion.Hey I only got one strike against you!You said you like "Alice"!I love "Alice"!

boechsner
02-10-2002, 08:05 PM
JT, you've missed my point. Marcia getting Davey Jones to sing at her prom was realistic for the Brady world. Every TV show has it's lengths and limits to realism, and that realism may or may not be realistic in the real world, meaning our world. I think, for the real world, The Brady Bunch is much more realistic than Three's Company in the portrayal of family interactions. I'm not saying the situations that the characters got themselves into is realistic to the real world and I'm not saying that every family is so happy all the time but for the Brady world they did have their share of problems.

As for Three's Company, those situations are normal for the Three's Company world but I don't see them being as realistic to the real world as the Brady world was. As for Alice, George Burns, Jerry Reed, Telly Savalas and Art Carney stopping by (of all places) Mel's Diner is realistic to the Alice world but certainly not the real world. Don't you see, every sitcom has some situations that are totally unrealistic and you picked an unrealistic one from the Brady Bunch and a realistic one from Three's Company to try to prove your point. I easily could have done the same thing by comparing Cindy Snow's unbelievable clumsiness to the Brady boys finding a lost wallet.

It all comes down to the same thing, TV is not real. It's meant to be a form of entertainment, and boy does it entertain us.

My favorite show on nick at night now, is "kids Say The Darnest Things"! It is sooo funny!
Other than that, Nick-at-Night has become really bad. They mostly air the same shows over and over again. The only reason for the "back to back episodes" thing, is so they can kill some time because they can't think of anyothers shows to put on because TV-Land has taken everything.
They don't have any of the real old CLASSICS anymore! Its awful!

JT, Friends is a wonderful show. And you say they rely only on bathroom jokes, but what about three's company? Ilike that show, but if you are gonna say that about Friends, you would have to say that about Three's Company also, because it DID rely on many sex jokes. Take away the sex jokes from Three's Company, and what would you have? Jack doing pratfalls throughout the show? That would get kinda boring, now wouldn't it. Im not trying to make you LOVE or ever LIKE Friends, but you cant hate on wonderful shows like Friends, saying that it is a bunch of bathroom jokes and think that Three's Company was much more..besides Jack tripping alot! There are SOO many great shows for you all to watch besides "old" shows. Don't you watch anything besides N@N? Try 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch', 'Charmed', the 'Hughleys', or 'Will and Grace' just for a change. ;) :)

I hate Friends because they rely on jokes that simply don't work. The acting is obnoxious and the situations are shopworn. And I loathe that theme song. Comparing Friends to "Cheers" is blasphemy, in my opinion.

This show's influence on other sitcoms cannot be denied; however, it is not a very good influence. Even by my standards, the programs today are moronic.

All the jokes seemed to revolve around the following:

—The word "penis"
—Pop culture references
—Perceived sexual orientation of characters

These could be funny if they weren't so forced. Being funny is something one cannot force. Cheers has it, and Friends doesn't.

Yes, I did try to watch these shows and I could not stand them.

I'm not a viewer of Friends, but when a show gets a 23.5 rating, it must be doing something right.(Especially in this day and age of cable)

What they're doing right is hyping the living daylights out of this show.

Once upon a time, there was a stock broker named Michael Milken. He told his investors that certain stocks were going to go up, and he advised them to buy as much as them as possible. He did so because he owned shares of those particular stocks.

This was illegal, and he went to jail.

To me Friends is like one of those Michael Milken stocks.

I really don't care how much a show is hyped, sure initially that will bring in alot of curious viewers but it won't sustain them. If a show is really bad and not funny, people won't watch it. Just because you say it's bad and unfunny doesn't mean it's bad and unfunny. I personally never found M*A*S*H funny, but somebody must've for it too be on as long as it was. A 23 rating is a 23 rating and to get that week after week isn't just hype. And this is from somebody who's NOT a fan of Friends.

Not saying this is the case with Friends but ratings can be slanted to ones favor. Years ago we had three different tv stations claiming to be number one and all 3 had a case. One was "number one" with young adults, the other with older adults. The other with people of the higher income bracket. Radio stations do it all the time. So many demographics and such anyone can be number one at least to a certain group of people.

Friends is hot right now because the hot target group among advertisers is the generation x crowd, according to NBC. I do wonder if the 23 rating , how much of it is generation x viewers.
Of course NBC wants the higher number, means more money for the peacock.

Gays & Lesbians is another hot market for the networks right now too. A study was made a couple of years ago that stated that many gay couples are among the higher end of the income bracket, a weathly demographic. The networks learned quickly, That is one key reason why so many shows have at least one gay character and/or feature gay themes. Showtime for example is making millions right now off Queer as Folk. So much so that there is now even a Queer is Folk board game. My co-worker has one.

Sure there is a Friends board game out there. If not it will be soon.

Hype doesn't have to do with their ratings. The movie "Ali" was hyped and it didn't even make it to No. 1, I believe. Friends may be getting a little publicity now, but Friends's RATINGS aren't due to PUBLICITY, the PUBLICITY is due to the wonderful RATINGS!!

okay, i give a wack at this. sort of mimicing that attamy or whatever guy.

once upon a time, there was a general sitcom board wher pretty much everyone dogged on 'friends' and telling everyone else what it was missing and what other shows had. and also talked about the jokes the show has that makes it unbearable to watch. but, unfortunatley, all the jokes people mentioned that are in EVERY 'friends' episode actually isn't. infact, i bet they've only used the word 'penis' in about 3 or 4 episodes. 'friends' has original ideas that really have never happened in any other series! and, if you know so much about what 'friends' is missing, you'd have to watch more than a few episodes! you can't say the show hasn't made you laugh. i've talked to 'friends' haters say 'oh, the friends cast should burn in hell. oh, but it did make me laugh'. and, if you say that other shows take ideas from 'friends', and you like that show, why don't you like 'friends'? i think you guys need to get over 'friends' and leave it alone, because it's done a lot. a lot more than some shows! it's only t.v. something america didn't have 60 years ago. so, i guess that's when people argued and talked about things that MATTER! so you don't like a show or you don't, who gives a crap?!

i'll tell you, u'll never see me dogging endlessly on a show that i hate. and another thing, i make a good debator!

I'll bet in a couple of years when Friends is all said and done, it'll be on the N@N schedule. The point of this discussion was boycotting N@N. For whatever reason, some people are very unhappy with the way N@N turned out. I'll agree that the network is a little too quick on pulling the trigger with their shows. It makes me wonder how long before Cheers is considered passe' and replace it with something like say 'A Different World'. My advice is to tape every episode you can before it disappears! I always felt that N@N should be kept seperate from TVLand. N@N could have the more current sitcoms like Cheers, Family Ties, The Cosby show etc. While TVLand could view all of the classics like MTM show, Rhoda and Newhart. Keep the genres seperate. Maybe N@N should do away with their 2 in a row concept and give that time to more sitcoms like FOL and Different Strokes? I don't know.

I've read the whole thread and, although I do not get Nick At Nite (I'm from the UK), I can sure see why you guys are angry at that network. What on Earth is the point of airing so little shows? Surely they could afford to buy more?

As for Cheers, I think it's very over rated. I do like the show, but I don't think it should be on tv as many times as NAN shows it. I mean, that's just crazy!

Friends, well. I like Friends. I have to admit that I thought season six wasn't too great, and season seven just sucked, but it seems to be getting better now. The best seasons were the first three. Season four was good, five was okay, then it just went downhill. However, like I said, it seems to be better now.

Oh, and about the whole hype debate. I can't speak for anyone else here, but I do not watch a show just because it's hyped. I watch it because I enjoy it, not because of how much media attention it has.

Just my 2p. :)

I don't watch N@N enough to have a rounded opinion but...pulling Diff'rent Strokes after a few days was one screwy and rude thing to do. It gave me no confidence in them - can't trust them. That showed a lack of respect for their audience.

Sitcomsnow has it about right a with the "Friends' issue. We all have our opinions. I couldn't stand the Tom Sellick coupling bit with what's her name but it's just a TV show. If someone else is buying it, being entertained by it, they don't deserve my animosity just for that, even if I do think that they're cookie.
