:typing: Well, I've been asked to write another FanFic, so if you're willing to go through the pain of reading it, I'm willing to put forth the effort and make an attempt at writing it...

Here is what I have so far, I hope it isn't too disappointing....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Monday morning the sun shown brighter, it seemed, just to annoy Jinny. She could find nothing in her life, presently, to waste such a beautiful day on. She had been suspended from her job for drinking, though she had been back for about three months. She was pretty much broke and had long since maxed out her credit cards, forcing her to return home to live with her alcoholic father. She was slowly getting back on her feet. And to top everything else off she had yet to get her boyfriend, Theodore Blumenthal to call her in that entire three month period. She knew it was most likely over between them, but she just couldn’t seem to let him go. That’s the reason she hated to get into a serious relationship.)
(Jinny forced herself out of bed and into the shower. She undressed and turned the shower on, not too hot. She stepped into the shower and leaned against the wall, letting the cool water cascade down her body, waking her up. She didn’t linger long, the captain had really gotten used to seeing her at work on time; a habit she knew she never should have gotten started. She smiled to herself.)
(Jinny wrapped a towel around her slender body and returned to her room to dress. She’d just removed the towel to dry off when the door opened and John, Jr. burst in.)
Jinny: (wrapping the towel back around her) Excuse me! I’m naked here!
John: (quick glance her way) Yeah, and?
Jinny: And?! We’re not kids anymore, John. Get out.
John: You ain’t got nothing I’ve never seen before.
Jinny: John!
John: (noticing the clothes Jinny has laid out to wear to work) Hey, that’s my shirt.
Jinny: (mocking him) Yeah, and?
John: (taking the shirt) It’s mine and I want it.
Jinny: (takes it back) Yeah, well, it was in my closet and I’m wearing it, so get over it.
John: (sighs, pouts) Well, don’t get all those (makes a face) girly smells on it. (turns to leave, turns back) And don’t get nothing else on it, either. (leaves, slamming the door)
(Jinny shakes her head as she finishes dressing. How could she forget the highlight of her stay with her dad? John, Jr. and his third wife were having problems, so he had also moved back home, temporarily. If only Casey would come home, they would be one big (happy excluded purposefully) family again.)
(Jinny finishes dressing, being sure to apply extra deodorant and her favorite perfume (which she hadn’t worn since Teddy...) and walked out of her room. She made sure to make an extra close pass by John, Jr. as she kissed her dad goodbye and left to pick up Magda.)
Well, here is a little bit more, sorry it isn't much, but I'm workin' on it....................
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(On the drive to Magda’s, Jinny spotted several, what she knew to be, exchanges between the drug pushers and the common public. This depressed Jinny even more. She worked so hard to become a police officer and even hard to become an Inspector and she had really thought she could make a difference. She really though that Jinny Exstead could put a stop to crime as it was known, at least in her little corner of the world. Jinny laughed to herself as she pulled up in front of Magda’s new house. Boy had she been mistaken. She couldn’t even get her family to take her seriously, let alone her employer. She knew it was because of her alcoholism. But she was slowly overcoming that, and it still didn’t seem to make a difference. Jinny knocked on the door and was greeted by one very excited little boy, Benjamin.)

Ben: Jinny!

Jinny: Hey, sweet boy. How’s it going? (Jinny picked him up; like she had a choice, he had a death grip on her)

Ben: Great. Except I gotta go to school. Yuck. I hate school.

Jinny: (makes a face) Me too. (Magda frowns at Jinny) But if you don’t go to school, how are you going to be smart enough to be a cop like your mom?

Ben: I don’t want to be a cop anymore. I want to be a player like daddy.

Jinny: (sets Ben down, laughing way too hard)

Magda:(heavy sigh, hard stare toward Jinny) (to Ben) A musician, Benjamin. It’s called a musician.

Ben: Oh, yeah. Well, that’s what I want to be.

Magda: Let’s go. You don’t want Jinny and Mommy to be late for work.

(Jinny and Magda are driving to the station in silence after dropping Ben off at school. Jinny looks over to Magda.)

Magda: What?

Jinny: (smiling) Nothing.

Magda: What?

Jinny: You.

Magda: Me? What about me?

Jinny: The look on your face when Ben said he wanted to be like Gabe, was one of those priceless moments.

Magda: That’s not funny, Jin. What if he really does? That doesn’t pay nothing. Look at Gabe. Bouncing around from gig to gig. It’s not a dependable way to support a family.

Jinny: Mag, he’s seven years old. He’ll change his mind a hundred more times by the time he’s old enough for it to matter.

Magda: You didn’t, and he’s eight now.

Jinny: Yeah, eight, right. Did you have to let him have a birthday while I was gone?

Magda: Well, it was kind of unavoidable, but if you want, we’ll go out. Just the three of us. We can go to Kiddie Palace, (teasing) I know how much you love Kiddie Palace.

Jinny: (laughs, shakes head) I’ll pass thanks.

Well, I am progressing very slowly, so here's a little more........

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(They get out of the car and make their way into the station. They stop and pour themselves coffee and sit down at their desks. CD is on the phone, but she waves at them . A few minutes later, Nate walks in carrying two cups of coffee. He sets one down in front of CD and she looks up, smiling her thanks. Jinny gives Magda a look that says ‘I wonder what they’ve been up to.’ Magda rolls her eyes and shakes her head. When eight o’clock rolls around and the captain hasn’t made an appearance, CD speaks her concern.)
CD: Anybody seen the Captain this morning?
Magda: No. It’s not like her to be late.
Jinny: Tell me about it. And to think, I was going to sleep in this morning. Why does she have to ruin everything in my life?
Kate: (walking in and overhearing) Because it’s my job.
Jinny: (turning around) Do you have to be so damned good at it?
Kate: (smiles) I’ll be in my office this morning. I’d rather not be disturbed. I’m sure you can all find something to occupy your time. Jinny, I’m still waiting for your ninety day self-evaluation forms to be completed and returned. Now would be a good time to work on that.
Jinny: (nods, smiles) (sarcastically) Yes, Mom. I’ll do my homework, I promise.
Kate: (walking into her office) Good, we’ll go over it first thing after lunch. (closes door)
Jinny: What’s eatin’ her?
Raina: (just turns her head and opens a file drawer)
(Jinny opens her desk drawer and pulls out the paperwork in question. She picks up a pen and starts reading and filling in blanks. With her partner busy, Magda decides to talk to Raina. She walks over and leans her back against the other file cabinet, arms crossed. She watches Raina for a few minutes, then speaks.)
Magda: So, what’s up with the Cap, Raina?
Raina: What? Oh, (looking away, picks up another file) nothing. Besides, how would I know what’s bothering the captain? She doesn’t talk to me.
Magda: We all know you have ears.
Raina: (looks up, hurt)
Magda: That’s not always a bad thing.
Raina: (looks back at Jinny, shakes her head) I can’t tell you.
Magda: Why not? Is it about Jinny?
Raina: (still filing, not speaking)
Magda: (takes the file out of Raina’s hands, leans in close, low) If it’s about my partner, I have every right to know, Raina.
Raina: (sighs) Okay, I over heard the captain on the phone yesterday. I don’t know who she was talking to but they pretty much think Jinny shouldn’t be on the street.
Magda: Why? Jinny’s ninety days have been great. Why would they want her off the streets?
Raina: (shrugs) I don’t know it isn’t my place to ask.
Magda: Well, I will.
Raina: (too loud) NO! (stares, turns to Magda, more quietly) You can’t do that. I’m not supposed to know that and.....
Magda: There’s more than one way around Captain McCafferty.
Kate: Oh? (standing there staring at Magda) Care to share that thought with me?
Magda: Um, hey. Yeah, can we talk?
Kate: I think we should.
Well, that's all for now, let me know what you think........
Sorry I didn't post yesterday, I was sick (you know i"m sick when I don't even want to sit at the computer). Here's a little more......
(Situated in the captain’s office, both the captain, and Magda are uncomfortably quiet.)
Kate: So, you want to tell me what that was all about?
Magda: (quietly) We were just wondering what was up with you. You were late for work, and then you don’t want to be disturbed once you get here? It’s not like you. We were worried.
Kate: Coming from CD, I would probably accept that. I think, this is about Jinny.
Magda: What about Jinny?
Kate: (doubtful look) Raina?
Magda: Cap, Raina or not, what’s up with Jinny? She’s my partner. I deserve to know.
Kate: It’s none of your business, really.
Magda: I’m not leaving until you tell me.
Kate: (stares at Magda for some time, then shrugs) DC and the boys uptown want her off the streets. It’s been an on again, off again fight for the past three months.
Magda: Why? Her ninety days have been good. She’s staying away from the alcohol. She comes to work everyday, on time; she’s really applied herself.
Kate: I agree. And because of that your cases are being solved quickly and your turnover rate is one of the lowest in the Division, and that’s the thing that’s saved her so far.
Magda: But?
Kate: They think it’ll only be a matter of time before she screws up again. They don’t want to run the risk of having the negative publicity that that could incur. They want her off the streets before anything bad can happen.
Magda: That’s not fair. Is that how you feel?
Kate: (sighs) If that’s how I felt, I wouldn’t have spent hours in meetings the past three months fighting for her. I’m exhausted and now, my daughter....(trails off)
Magda: Amanda? Is she okay.
Kate: (shakes her head) She and her boyfriend are getting married this weekend. They took off for Las Vegas yesterday. They want to work on children (exaggerated) before I’m too old to enjoy them.
Magda: (laughs, then serious) What are you going to do about Jinny?
Kate: I’m working on it. I just hope she doesn’t pull anything stupid anytime soon.
Magda: Does she know?
Kate: No. I’m going to talk to her this afternoon. I’m not sure how well it’s going to go over. Especially now, after her suspension. We’re not getting along really well at the moment.
Magda: (nods) Tell her you’re pulling for her.
Kate: Think it will make a difference?
Magda: Not now. (gets up to leave) Maybe in the long run.
Kate: (nods) Close the door on your way out.
(Magda walked out of the office and to her desk, which was right in front of Raina’s. She looked to see Raina’s questioning eyes and shook her head. She sighed and looked around for something to do. With their last case solved after two long weeks, Magda was happy to be able to enjoy a day of leisure. Jinny interrupted her thoughts.)
Jinny: Hey, Mag?
Magda: Yeah, Jin. What is it?
Jinny: (reading from paper) Do I work well with my partner? and......(scans paper) Could I say that I treat my colleagues with dignity and respect?
Raina: (chokes on her coffee)
Magda: (says nothing, but indicated Raina with a nod of her head)
Jinny: (watches Raina briefly) I’ll take that as a no. Care if I mark ‘yes’ to those anyway?
Thanks again for understanding. Here's a little more of my story.....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Magda: Where did CD & Nate take off too?

Jinny: They got a call, missing persons or something. I wasn’t paying any attention.

Magda: Almost done with that?

Jinny: Yeah. I’m done. (lays down her pen and smiles) I had a few extra minutes. I thought I’d double check my answers. Make sure I get a good grade.

Magda: This isn’t funny, Jinny. This is serious. Okay?

Jinny: (raises eyebrows) Okay. Jeeze, Mag. take it easy.

Magda: I’m sorry. But you can’t make everything a joke, Jinny.

Jinny: (quiet for a minute) So, um, what were you and the captain talking about?

Magda: Oh, um, nothing in particular.

Jinny: In other words, none of my business.

Magda: (smiles)

(Nate and CD arrive at the Department of Health and Human Resources. They are asked to be seated and wait. While sitting in the outer office, a small child has attached himself to Nate. He is approximately three years old and very talkative. He brings Nate a book and crawls up into Nate’s lap. Nate reads about half of the book and looks down to find the small child sound asleep and drooling on Nate’s light blue sweater. The mother notices and places the infant she was feeding into a carrier and retrieves her son.)

Lady: I’m really sorry about that.

Nate: No problem. Glad I could help.

Lady: Thanks so much. Being a single parent of two has it’s trying moments.

Nate: (nods, smiles)

(Someone opens the office door and beacons for Nate and CD to follow. As the rise, the mother of the child notices, for the first time, Nate’s side arm. Her eyes grow wide and she cuddles her song more closely.)

Lady: Hi. (extends a hand to CD, then Nate) I’m Mary Owens, the director of Child Protective Services.

CD: I’m Inspector De Lorenzo, this is my partner, Inspector Basso. Can you give us more detail about why you placed the call to 911 this morning?

Mary: Yes, ma’am. My office is this way. (Takes off down the hall; she walks into her office and motions them to be seated) Please, have a seat. I want to thank you for responding so quickly.

CD: (smiles, nods)

Mary: We have a lady who works for us, Valerie Shaw; she went to a home yesterday for a follow-up visit. She hasn’t been seen since. She didn’t return to the office, or call to check in; her husband called this morning, she never came home last night.

Nate: Can you give us the name and some of the background information on the home she was visiting?

Mary: (nods, hands CD a file) She was going to the home of Michael and Charlotte Franklin. Parents of a six-year old, and four year old twins. There has been a long history of calls since they moved into their neighborhood, shortly after the twins were born, lots of screaming and yelling late at night, you know. There have never been any signs of physical abuse to the children, the wife always denied being abused. (pauses, changes direction) You know, there are only a limited number of foster parents in this state. Our policies are not always what we think is best, but if there are no signs of physical abuse, we try other alternative first; called intervention criteria: anger management, marriage counseling, parenting classes. Anything to keep the children in an environment where they are familiar with their surroundings. and can still feel loved (stressed) and safe. These criteria seemed to be working for the Franklins. We received a phone call night before last that there had been a lot of screaming and yelling and that the wife had a lot of bruises when she went to the mailbox. This caller said that the children could also be heard crying inside, but were not seen outside the home. Mrs. Shaw went to check it out. We don’t know what she found.

CD: The Franklins’ address can be found in this file?

Mary: Yes.

CD: (nods) We’ll check it out.

Mary: (as CD and Nate are getting up to leave) Thank you. I would appreciate anything you can do.

(Back at the station, Jinny slams the door as she leaves the Captain’s office. She gives Magda a hard stare and heads for the locker room. Magda’s heart drops. She follows Jinny into the locker room after glancing into the captain’s office. The captain jut shrugs and shakes her head. As she opens the door, she hears Jinny punch her locker.)

Magda: What’d the locker do to you?

Jinny: (shaking) (angry) Don’t you EVEN come in here preaching at me!

Magda: I didn’t come in here to preach at you. I came in here because I was concerned about you. I’m your friend, remember? Friends listen. Lockers...well they can listen, but can they put an arm around you? They don’t even have a shoulder to cry on. (smiles as she wipes a tear from Jinny’s face)

Jinny: (turns away) I’m not in the mood, Mag.

Magda: (stern) Well, if you don’t want to talk, fine. We have a call to respond to, so let’s go.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There ya be. Got a few more tests tomorrow and another doctor's appointment Tuesday. If I get up the nerve to call in tomorrow I'll try to post more........
Okay, since I've been so bad at posting the past few days, I'm gonna give you a little extra while I feel half way good.....I REALLY hope you enjoy this part as much as I did writing it>>>>>>>>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Magda turns to leave, leaving Jinny standing in the locker room. Jinny slammed her locker shut and followed Magda out of the room. She swung by her desk and grabbed her jacket and badge.)

(Raina just watched as Jinny walked passed her desk. She shook her head, still unable to figure out what made Jinny tick. She had decided not to let Jinny intimidate her anymore, and that she would defend herself and her actions to Jinny everyday if necessary, but there were days that she was glad Jinny didn’t criticize her, like today. Raina was sure Jinny would have chewed her up and used her bones to pick her teeth.)

(Magda was waiting in the car when Jinny came out of the Division. She got in the car and slammed the door. She started the car and threw it into reverse, then drive as she pulled out onto the street. It was days like this, Jinny thought, that she would still like to have her standard shift, it was next to impossible to burn rubber in this car, and when she was angry, that always had the potential to make her feel better. Jinny almost smiled. Magda gave Jinny the directions to the crime scene and Jinny parked the car once, they got there, almost throwing Magda through the windshield.)

Magda: (looking Jinny’s way) I think I’ll drive back to the station.

Jinny: (just gives Magda a sour look)

(Jinny and Magda get out of the car and are met by an officer. He hands them a handwritten report of what they had found thus far at the crime scene then follows them towards the house giving an oral report of the same.)

Officer: Seems to be a suicide, possibly a murder. Woman, approximately thirty-two to thirty-five. Found in the bedroom of their home, single gun shot wound to the head....

Magda: Who found her?

Officer: Her twelve year old daughter, imagine that. Neighbor’s heard her screaming and came to see what was the matter. They took the daughter to their home and placed the call to 911.

(The two turn to look at Jinny, who had stopped several feet behind them. Jinny is staring up at the house, seemingly in a daze. She cannot seem to get her feet to move. All she can see is her house. She pictures running into her house with that math paper in her hand, that big red ‘A’ on the top. Magda‘s voice finally broke through.)

Magda: Jinny!

Jinny: (jumping) What?

Magda: Are you coming?

Jinny: Yeah, sure Mag.

(Jinny and Magda followed the officer into the house. Jinny thoughts again trailed off: {The smell that met her at the door. She made a face, she hoped it wasn’t what they were having for dinner. She called for her mother, but there was no answer. She couldn’t smell the cookies baking. It was Tuesday and mom always made fresh cookies on Tuesday. She walked through the living room and into the kitchen, dinner hadn’t even been started, boy was dad gonna be mad. Jinny could sense the fight that was coming tonight, she shuddered. She’d see if she could spend the night at a friend’s.})

Officer: The bedroom is just up these stairs and to the left. The medical examiner is there waiting for you.

Magda: Thank you. (glances back at Jinny in her own little world. she seems to be seeing nothing)

(Jinny follows Magda up the stairs: {She walked back through the living room and up the stairs. That smell was getting stronger, her stomach was starting to churn. She called for her mother again, but there is still no answer. She pushed the bedroom door open, no one. But wait, there are feet sticking out of the bathroom door. Her mother’s shoes. Jinny runs to the bathroom door.......})

(Magda knocks and pushes open the bedroom door. Jinny stops at the first sight of the body, laying on the bed. {..........and there was her mother, laying in the floor in a pool of blood. Jinny’s first thought was that she must have fallen, so she scoots up close to try and wake her. She shakes her mother as hard as she can, and screams at her. Her mother’s head turns slightly from the force of being shaken and that is when Jinny first sees that part of her mother’s head is missing. She screams, and screams for what seems like hours.......and then she is feels the arms grabbing her and pulling her out of the bathroom} Jinny jumps, swinging at the person that touched her.)

Magda: Jinny!!! What’s wrong? (Magda’s face is shows true concern)

Jinny: (retching) I think I’m gonna be sick. (she rushes into the bathroom adjacent the bedroom they are in, and vomits.)

Magda: (turns back to the medical examiner; a comforting face) Hey, Steven. What’cha got for us?

Steven: Probably a suicide. (indicating the direction Jinny had gone off in) She okay?

Magda: (shakes her head) Long story.

(Steven has given Magda the majority of the pertinent information by the time Jinny returns, obviously shaken. She listens to the exchanges between Magda and Steven, following each face as they speak, making a deliberate effort not to look at the body.)

Magda: Okay, thanks Steven. You’ll let us know the results of the testing?

Steven: As always. I’ll call as soon as it’s confirmed.

Magda: Thanks. (to Jinny) Let’s go talk to the little girl.

(Jinny nods. As they are leaving, Jinny turns back once more to look at the body. She still sees her mother, laying there. She shivers one last time and leaves the room.)

(They walk outside and question an officer concerning the whereabouts of the daughter. She informs them that she is at the neighboring house on the left of the property. Magda thanks the officer and turns to Jinny who is gone. She makes a complete circle before she discovers Jinny leaning against their car. She walks over to her and sits on the hood, just watching Jinny.)

Magda: Kind of rough isn’t it? You want me to call the captain and have someone else sent out here?

Jinny: No.

Magda: I’m sure she’d understand...

Jinny: I said no, Magda. I just...(pause)...I need a few minutes.

Magda: Looks back toward the house. Want to talk about it?

Jinny: That’s the last thing I want to do.

Magda: (shakes her head) Jinny...

Jinny: (interrupts) When we go in there to talk to that kid, Magda, don’t ask her why her mother killed herself. She doesn’t know.

Magda: (nods) Okay. So, what do we ask her?

Jinny: (shakes her head) I don’t know. But let’s get it over with, for her sake and mine.

(They walk up to the house and knock on the door. They introduce themselves and are shown to a small nook to speak with the neighbors who discovered the little girl and her mother.)

Magda: Can you explain to us what happened?

Man: Yes. My wife and I had just stepped out of our house to run some errands when we heard someone screaming next door. We ran over there to see what was going on and found Cassidy standing in the doorway to her parents’ room screaming. When we got to her, we saw it. We saw Sarah, laying on the bed, dead. We didn’t linger. I told my wife to take Cassidy back to the house and call 911. I checked for a pulse, but there wasn’t one, so I came back downstairs to wait for the police to arrive.

Jinny: (annoyed) You’ve been home all day, and didn’t hear a gun shot?

Man: No. We didn’t hear anything. (embarrassed) My wife and I were in the bedroom most of the morning. I don’t get much time off from work and, well.

Jinny: Yeah, I don’t think we need to hear that part. Where’s the kid?

Man: She’s in the sitting room. That way.

(Jinny and Magda followed the man’s directions and found the girl sitting on a couch in front of the television. The girl did not divert her attention from the television when they knocked or entered the room. There were no tears in the little girls eyes. They were cold, staring. She was lost inside herself. Jinny remembered herself at this stage. {All of the officers swarmed around her, not one paying her any attention. Someone had been kind enough to throw her a box of tissues, which she wasn’t using. She heard an officer comforting Casey as he cried. That should have been her job, she fell deeper and deeper into her emotional turmoil: guilt, for not doing her part in this family crisis; self-hatred and hatred towards her family for pushing her mother to do this; and shame for feeling all the things she was feeling.} Magda walked over and sat in a chair almost directly in front of the girl. Jinny stood further back, watching their exchange briefly.)

Magda: Cassidy? Cassidy, my name is Inspector Ramirez and that’s Inspector Exstead....(Jinny interrupts)

Jinny: (walking over and sitting directly beside Cassidy, causing her to jump; she looked up at Jinny) I’m Jinny, that’s Magda.

Cass: (turns back to the television, ignoring them)

(Jinny sits beside Cassidy for about an hour, not speaking. Magda just sits watching the two. Jinny is watching the television, set for cartoons. Magda can tell that Jinny is not concentrating on the show any more than the girl is. Finally, a tear breaks free from Jinny’s eye, and runs down her cheek. The girl turns and watches Jinny as she wipes it away. The girl throws herself at Jinny, sobbing and trying to talk all at once. She was angry and scared all at once. She was beating Jinny on the back with her fists screaming ‘why’ at the top of her lungs. Jinny held onto her the entire time, seeming not to notice the beating she was getting. Magda, at one point, attempted to get up and help Jinny, but was waved off. She sat back down and took it all in, next to tears herself.)

Jinny: (speaks softly to Cassidy; Cassidy nods and sits down)

Cass: Did she really do it? Did she really kill herself?

Jinny: (nods, speaks quietly) All the tests aren’t back yet, but it looks that way.

Cass: Why? What did I do? (tearing up)

Jinny: Nothing. You didn’t do anything. Did your mom work or anything? What did the do during the day?

Cass: No. She stayed home and took care of the house. She wanted to go back to school, but we didn’t have the money for that. We had a lot of bills, I guess.

Jinny: Your parents talk about the finances with you?

Cass: No, but I’ve heard them argue over things like that. That and the fact that Dad is never home anymore. He’s always out with his friends, and mom was upset with him. But she was always in a good mood when it was just me and her, always singing and smiling. I don’t understand.

Jinny: It’s really hard to understand. You may not understand for years, but the one thing you can’t do, is blame yourself. If she was that happy when you were around, it’s because she loved you. Sometimes there are things you don’t know about, things she tried really hard to keep you from knowing about, thinking it was better that way. I hope one day you understand that.

Cass: (nods) Do I have to go home right now?

Jinny: No. Your father should be home soon. We’ll have a few questions for him, then the two of you can go where ever you want.

Cass: (nods) Thank you.

Jinny: (smiles, nods as she and Magda leave)

Okay, I'm feeling good, cause all of tests have come back good so far. So here's a little more to tide ya over till I can post more.......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(They exit the house and meet an officer in the street. He tells them that the husband of the woman had arrived and was waiting to speak to them. He shows them to where the husband is seated on a brick wall surrounding the property and leaves them to question the man.)
Man: Where’s my wife? Why won’t they let me see her? Where’s my little girl? I want my little girl?
Magda: Mr. Marshall, calm down, please.
Man: Scott, my name is Scott. What’s going on?
Magda: Mr. Marshall, it appears that your wife has committed suicide. We need...
Scott: She what? She co..., she killed herself? Just like that? No. No, I want to see her. She wouldn’t do that. She wouldn’t kill herself.
Magda: They’ve taken the body to the medical examiner’s office for evaluation to confirm the suicide attempt. There are ways they can tell. What we need from you is...
Scott: What?! They took her where? Where’s Cassidy?
Jinny: (places a hand on his shoulder and pushes him back down on the wall) Calm down. The sooner you answer our questions, the sooner you’ll see your daughter. Believe me, she needs you right now.
Scott: Okay. (nodding) All right. I’m sorry, I just can’t believe it.
Magda: Did you and your wife argue a lot?
Scott: Not until just recently. She wanted to go back to school now that Cassidy is older, but we just couldn’t fit it into our budget on just my income. I wanted her to get a part-time job. We have a lot of credit card debt, then there’s two car payments, and the mortgage, and then things for Cassidy. It was hard to swing. We were barely making it.
Magda: Had her moods changed recently because of this?
Scott: Yes. Drastically. She was trying to find a job, but she’s been out of the workforce for almost fifteen years and she was having difficulties. Her mom was sick and recently passed away, I guess it was just too much.
Jinny: Do you drink a lot?
Scott: Occasionally, yes. When I needed to get away, I’d go to the bar with a friend or something and have a drink. What’s wrong with that?
Jinny: She confronted you recently with that didn’t she? You fight about it?
Scott: We argued about the time I spent with my friends, yes. I had decided to spend more time with her and Cassidy, but I had made plans for this week with a friend and was going out. I was going to stay home next week with her. Fix her dinner, take her out. I was going to change.
Jinny: Next week. How convenient. Little late, though.
Scott: My wife just died and you’re interrogating me, like I killed her.
Jinny: No. You didn’t pull the trigger, but look at you. She had problems and you didn’t even pay enough attention to her to recognize that. Maybe if you had..
Magda: (inserts herself between Jinny and Scott Marshall) Jinny, that’s enough. Go to the car. I’ll finish up here. (Jinny hesitates) Go, please, Jinny, just go.
Jinny: (turns and walks off)
Magda: I’m really sorry, this case is really close to home for her. She did really well with you daughter, though.
Scott: Yeah? Did she give her the same once over that she gave me?
Magda: It wasn’t that many years ago that she was in your daughter’s shoes, Mr. Marshall.
Scott: (quiet, thinking) Are we finished, Officer? I’d really like to see my daughter.
Magda: It’s Inspector. Inspector Ramirez, my partner is Inspector Exstead. Yes, we’re finished. When the forensics are back, we’ll contact you with the findings, but I’m sure it’s going to be ruled a suicide.
Scott: Thank you, Inspector. Have a good day.
Magda: (nods) You do the same, Mr. Marshall.
(Jinny was quiet all the way back to the station. Magda started a number of times to speak to her but couldn’t force herself to do so. She knew this case was difficult enough for Jinny without her making it worse.)
(Back at the station, Jinny and Magda get out of the car and walk inside. While waiting for an elevator, Jinny see Teddy coming around a corner nearby.)
Jinny: Hey, Mag, I’ll catch up to you, okay?
Magda: Sure Jin.
(Jinny tried to refrain from running to catch up with Teddy, but can hardly keep herself from doing so. Teddy is going into the elevator as Jinny catches up with him. She stops the elevator just in time, and steps inside. Teddy doesn’t seem as thrilled to see her as she had originally hoped he would be.)
Jinny: Hey.
Teddy: (weak smile) Hey. How have you been?
Jinny: Well, if I thought you were really interested in knowing, I’d tell you rough, but I don’t think you were asking as much out of concern as you were to be polite.
Teddy: (another weak smile)
Jinny: I’ve tried to call you for three months now. You couldn’t just have the decency to answer the phone, or call me back and say it’s over?
Teddy: Jinny, (pauses, searching for the right words)
Jinny: It’s over. I understand that now. (nods, looks away, almost in tears)
Teddy: Jinny...
Jinny: (interrupts) No, it’s okay, really. I understand. I screwed up. (door opens, Teddy stands in the door to keep it from closing) And the one person, who I thought might understand....(shakes her head)...Thanks a lot.
Teddy: (looks at her briefly, starts to speak, chooses not to) (nods) (turns to walk away, slowly)
Jinny: (grabs his sleeve) (quietly, in tears) Don’t leave me, please.
(Teddy looks down into Jinny’s tear-filled eyes, then down at the hand she has on his arm. He knows it probably took everything she had to mutter that plea. He wanted to take her in his arms and hug her, and tell her everything would be all right, but he wasn’t sure his heart could take being broken again. He took her hand in his and kissed it gently.)
Teddy: I’m sorry, Jinny. I can’t. (he released her hand, turned, and walked away)
I'm glad you're all enjoying this, here's a little more.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Jinny watched him walk away until the door to the elevator shut. She stood there for a few seconds, devastated by what she had just heard. She had known it all along, but now that it was final, she just couldn’t believe it. She stood there, too shocked to move, until the door opened and more people entered the elevator. One guy pushed a couple of buttons for himself and the person that entered the elevator.)

Jinny: Um, six please.

Man: Six it is.

Jinny: (smiles, nods) Thanks.

(Jinny walked into the Felony Division a few minutes later, slowly, thinking. Trying to regain control of her emotions. She really didn’t want to cry right now. She would have explain what just happened, and she really didn’t want to have to do that. She didn’t notice Magda looking at her as she walked by her desk; she didn’t notice anything until she finally sat down. Magda came over and bent down, propping herself on her elbows on Jinny’s desk.)

Magda: So, where did you take off to, so fast?

Jinny: (shakes her head) No where, really, just though I saw someone I knew.

Magda: And did you?

Jinny: Nobody I know, now anyways. (weak smile)

Magda: Teddy?

Jinny: (looks away, fighting tears)

Magda: Wasn’t good, huh?

Jinny: (shakes her head, afraid to speak)

Kate: (coming out of her office) Magda, Jinny, what have you got for me?

(Jinny and Magda follow the captain back into her office and sit down. Once the captain has taken her seat Magda begins.)

Magda: Um, female, Sarah Marshall, age 35. Believed to have committed suicide. Found in her bedroom, single gunshot to the head. We’re waiting on the Steven to call with the forensics on the gun, but we’re pretty sure it was suicide. Husband says that she had become depressed of late, with him and their financial situation. She couldn’t get a job, because she’s been out of the job market so long, raising their daughter.

Kate: You question the daughter?

Magda: Sort of, yes. She found the body. (Kate winced, looked toward Jinny who was looking away) She was pretty traumatized by the entire thing. She didn’t give us much more than what the husband said. I figured if we needed anymore information from her, we could wait a little while.

Jinny: (angry) You know what, why can’t we just leave the poor kid out of it? It was traumatic enough; she shouldn’t have to relive it for the rest of her life.

(Everyone was quieted by her outburst. Jinny was staring back and forth between the captain and Magda. Unsure of what to do next. She got up and started for the door.)

Kate: (quietly) Jinny, come sit down.

Jinny: (turns to look at Magda, then the captain) (opens the door and walks out, slamming the door behind her)

Magda: (gets up to go after her)

Kate: Sit down, Magda. She’ll be okay.

Magda: Captain, that was hard on her out there today. She needs some...

Kate: She needs to deal with this.

Magda: Captain, I really need to...(pause, changes direction) You didn’t send her out there intentionally....

Kate: No. I think we‘re finished for now, keep me updated. (gets up and walks out of the office)

(Magda gets up and follow the captain out of the office. She stops at her desk and looks at CD who is watching her questioningly. Magda shakes her head. The captain walks into the locker room across the hall from the Felony Division. Sitting on a bench across the room is Jinny, hands shaking. In her hands is a small bottle of Vodka. Jinny is staring at the bottle, obviously in turmoil over what to do with it. The captain stands in front of her, arms crossed, not saying anything. Just watching. She notices the seal has never been broken on the bottle. Jinny knows she’s there, but doesn’t acknowledge her for quite some time, just stares at the bottle, longing for it’s contents.)

Kate: I can’t stop you from drinking it.

(Jinny gets up and throws the bottle across the room angrily. It soars through the locker room and smashes against the far wall of a shower stall, glass tinkling to the floor. Kate just watches, not speaking. Jinny turns her back to the captain, propping her arms on the wall and putting her head in her hands. Still, the captain says nothing. She walks over and stands beside Jinny, and watches her for a few minutes. Jinny is taking slow, deep breaths, trying to keep from crying in front her. She puts a hand on Jinny’s back and speaks softly to her.)

Kate: Sit down, Jinny.

Jinny: (shakes her head)

Kate: (places a her other hand on Jinny’s arm) Sit down...

Jinny: (turns around quickly, pushing Kate’s arms away) She’s going to see that for the rest of her life!

Kate: Who, Jinny? Sarah Marshall’s daughter?

Jinny: Every night when she closes her eyes, every holiday, her first date, her graduation, her wedding day, and every damn day in her life that she needs someone to talk to about something. She’s going to see her mother laying there in her own blood and she’s going to wonder why in the hell she did it! (fighting tears, wiping a few away) Who’s going to be there to tell her about getting her period and about boys? Her father? Please.

Kate: I don’t know, Jinny. I’m sorry, I really am. I didn’t take this call, or I wouldn’t have sent you. Raina didn’t know.

Jinny: Raina. (rolls her eyes) (sits down beside Kate)

Kate: Jinny, you were green once, too. You really need to lighten up on her. She has real potential.

Jinny: (shakes her head) What kind of a mother could do that to their kids. I just don’t understand.

Kate: I won’t pretend I know, Jinny. (both are quiet for a minute) Tell me about your mother, Jinny.

Jinny: Look, Cap, this isn’t something that...

Kate: Stop acting like you hate me and talk to me. Truth is, you like me, you just don’t know it.

Jinny: (eyes wide, comical) Want to explain that, Cap’n?

Kate: You’ve never had any authority in you life, and you don’t like it because you can’t get by with everything with me.

Jinny: I’ve had other captains before you.

Kate: I know. And don’t think you’re getting by with everything you think you are.

Jinny: Meaning?

Kate: Captain Marcum.

Jinny: (eyes grow wide at the mention of his name) Oh, God. You know?

Kate: (nods)

Jinny: (runs fingers through her hair, worried look on her face) We were so careful. How long have you known? How did you...

Kate: (holds up her hand) I’ve know for about four years now. It’s none of your business how I know. Your secret is safe with me.

Jinny: (laughs) (quiet)

Kate: So, who told you about your period?

Jinny: (laughs again) My dad handed me a box of tampons and said read the box. I stayed in my room for a week. I made him bring my food and set it on a TV table I set outside my room.

Kate: (smiles) You want me to give this case to someone else?

Jinny: No. I can handle it.

Kate: Better than today, I hope.

Jinny: (drops her head, nods)

Kate: Good. (she gets up to leave, points over in the shower stall) Clean that up before you leave. (shakes her head) The things some people will leave laying around.

Jinny: (nods, remains sitting until the captain leaves)

Thanks, you guys are WAY too kind. But I'm glad you like it. Here's a little more.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(The captain walks back into the Felony Division quietly. She head for her office, but thinks again. She turns back around in time to see Magda getting up and heading out the door. Kate stops her.)
Kate: Magda, she’ll be out in a minute. Sit down and wait for her.
Magda: (nods, sits)
(Jinny cleans up the glass slowly, thinking about the conversation she had just had with Captain McCafferty. Jinny still couldn’t believe that she had known about Captain Marcum, or even how she knew. He was years ago. She also couldn’t believe that she hadn’t fired her or worse for even possessing alcohol at work again. Jinny thought she was over the desire to drink and couldn’t believe that the urge had been so strong so suddenly. She felt guilty for feeling that desire again, she though she was passed that stage. She finished cleaning up the glass and returned to her desk. She sat down hard and put her head down on her desk.)
Magda: (lightly punches Jinny’s arm) Hey, CD, Nate, and I are going to have dinner at the Anchorside before we go home. Why don’t you join us?
CD: (hearing her name, listens in) Yeah, sure, Jinny, it’ll be fun.
Nate: Sure, they won’t tell me what I have to do to pick up a woman, maybe you can tell me.
Jinny: I don’t think so. I’m really not in to mood to... (truth was, she really didn’t feel like going home to her father and brother right now)
Magda: (puts her arms around Jinny) Come on. It’ll get your mind off everything that’s happened today.
Jinny: No, a beer would get my mind off of everything that’s happened today.
Magda: (discouraged) Jin.
Jinny: Okay. (throws hands up) Okay. I’ll go. (forcing a smile) Are you happy now?
Magda: Happier. (seeing Raina come in) Hey, Raina, we’re going to the Anchorside, want to join us?
Raina: (looking around at the nods, Jinny doesn’t seem happy with the idea) (she stalls) Um, gee, thanks for asking, but, um, I’m really...
Magda: (looking from Jinny to Raina) Oh, come on, what is it with you people today? First you say no, and now you? Raina, you’re welcome to join us.
Raina: (one last glance at Jinny, who has turned around to get her jacket, then a glance back to Magda)
Magda: (nods)
Raina: Okay. Sure. But I have to file these first, so I’ll be there in a few.
Magda: Okay.
(The foursome head for the Anchorside. The walk into the dimly lit, smoke-filled room and select a corner booth, where Raina can join them later. They place their dinner orders and talk about the day while they’re waiting on their food. CD notices that a couple girls at the bar are looking their way, laughing and talking between themselves.)
CD: Hey, Nate. (she indicates the women with a nod of her head) I think maybe this is your lucky day.
Nate: (glances at the bar) Not bad. Not bad. (teasing CD) I wonder how they are in bed.
Magda: (laughs, nudges Jinny) Hey, now that sounds like something Jinny would say. Maybe we should just fix the two of you up.
Nate: Well, (he shrugs looking at Jinny) How good are you in bed?
Jinny: (still in a bad mood from the station, just smiles slightly, looks at Nate) If only you had caught me in my drinkin’ days.
Nate: (smiles at Jinny, then looks at CD)
CD: (smiles, rolls her eyes)
(Jinny excuses herself as their food is being delivered. She goes to the restroom. While she was gone Raina joined them. She placed her order, makes some light conversation with everyone at the table and excuses herself to the restroom as well, but before she arrived in the restroom.........)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Jinny came out of the bathroom stall and turned on the faucet’s hot water. She looked over to see one of the ladies from the bar standing there. Jinny nodded to her and began to wash her hands. The girl came over and leaned against the next sink, saying nothing, Jinny can tell she‘s had a little too much to drink. Jinny looked up as she turned the water off and reached for paper towels. The girl smiled.)

Girl: Hi. Um, my name is Shari.

Jinny: (smiles, dries her hands)

Shari: My friend and I, we’ve been watching you from the bar. (getting closer)

(Jinny raised an eyebrow and turned around to throw her paper towel away. When Jinny stood up, the girl was so close, Jinny could feel her breathe on the back of her neck.)

Shari: I’d really like to get to know you better.

Jinny: (turns, backing up) Okay, you know what? That’s just too much. Could you just back off.

Shari: (advancing on Jinny) I saw you watching me out there. You can’t deny that.

Jinny: (sees Raina come into the bathroom) Okay. We were watching you (backing away from her) because we thought you were looking at our male friend out there, but I guess that wasn’t the case.

(Raina leaves the bathroom and returns to the table where everyone else was eating and chatting comfortably.)

Magda: Hey, that was fast. You see Jinny in there anywhere?

Raina: (nervously looks back toward the bathroom) Um, well. She’s in there but...

Magda: What? (getting up) What’s going on?

(Magda pushes passed Raina followed by CD. Raina joins in on the tail of the line and they enter the bathroom just as the girl Raina had previously seen, came flying backwards. She hit the wall with a thud and slumped to the floor. Magda looked at the girl for a minute and looked up at Jinny, shocked. About that time, the girl’s friends from the bar came in.)

Girl1: Oh, my God! What happened?! (bending down to the girl, nudging her) Shari? (to the other girl) Call the police.

(Magda bends down to check on the girl but is pushed away. She gets up to go check on Jinny.)

Magda: What happened? Are you okay?

Jinny: (nods, rubbing her fist with her other hand)

(The bartender came to the door of the bathroom and asked them all to come out and be seated. The girl who had identified herself as Shari, was up now, but kept her distance from Jinny. Seated back outside at the booth, Magda began to question Jinny again.)

Magda: Jin, what happened?

Jinny: (shakes her head, seems confused) I don’t know, Mag.

Magda: You’re going to have to come up with a better line than that for the officer coming to talk to you.

Jinny: Officer? What? (snapping back to reality) She called the cops?

Magda: (nodding) Now do you remember?

Jinny: (still shaking her head in disbelief) I went to the bathroom and came out and she was standing there. She kept getting closer and closer and touching me. I told her to stop and she didn’t listen. She was drunk. (pause) God that sounds stupid. Sexually harassed by a woman? (shakes her head)

Nate: (looks confused) You mean, the girls that were looking over here earlier...

Jinny: (growing agitated) Yeah. Apparently it wasn’t you they were watching.

Nate: Wow. Just goes to show you, you never know anymore.

Jinny: (runs her fingers through her hair and sighs heavily)

(The officers arrived quickly and began to take statements from the bartender and from Shari and her friends. When the officer finished with the bartender, he walked over to where Jinny was sitting.)

Cop: He guys.

Magda: Hey Bill.

Bill: Hey, Jinny. (pulls up a chair and sits) So what’s up?

Jinny: (shakes her head) I don’t know. She came into the bathroom and started talking to me and (pauses, staring off, trying to think)

Bill: She said you hit her.

Jinny: Yeah, I did.

Bill: Well, um...

Jinny: She touched me and I back away. I told her to stop
and she continued to make advances. I pushed her away and when she came back again, I hit her.

Bill: So, what you’re saying is that she...(hesitant)

Jinny: (getting angry, raising her voice a little) Yes! Yes, that is exactly what I’m saying, okay!?!

Thanks all for saying such great things....and thanks for using your first post on my story......Here's more..........

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bill: Okay, Okay, sorry. (pause, looks nervous) She, um, she wants to press charges. So, I’m gonna have to take you back to the station.
Jinny: (sighs) Yeah, okay. I’ll walk across.
Bill: Um, (pause) I don’t know...
Magda: (rolls her eyes) We’ll go with her, Bill.
Bill: Okay. I guess that’ll be all right.
(Jinny nods and slides out of the booth, followed by Magda. They trail out of the bar, leaving money on the table to cover their half-eaten meals. Back at the station, they all go to their desks and sit down. Captain McCafferty notices their return and sticks her head out of her office.)
Kate: Hey, guys. What’s up? The trouble across the road too much for you to handle?
Magda: (looking at Jinny teasingly) You’re looking at the trouble across the street.
Kate: (looks at Jinny, who is not smiling) My office.
(Jinny and Magda both get up and head for the captain’s office. Kate stops Magda and closes the door behind Jinny and herself. She indicates the chair in front of her desk and Jinny sits down, hard.)
Kate: So what’s going on?
(Jinny recounts her story for the third time that night. The Captain looks on quietly as Jinny speaks, not interrupting. She asks questions afterwards.)
Kate: And there was no other possible way to resolve this?
Jinny: Cap’n, I back away; I said I wasn’t interested, I pushed her away. She was drunk, she still came back...
Kate: (matter-of-factly) So, you hit her.
Jinny: Yes, (annoyed) I think that’s been established.
Kate: There’s no reason for attitude here, Jinny. I could suspend you just as easily as I can sit here and listen to you.
Jinny: (nods) Right. I forgot. See, I was under the impression that that’s all you were waiting for. Me to screw up, so you could have some legitimate reason to get rid of me.
Kate: I don’t recall that being in our discussion this morning.
Jinny: Yeah, well, I...
Kate: Have you been drinking, Jinny?
Jinny: (stunned, unable to answer)
Kate: (takes her silence the wrong way) Go downstairs. I want a blood alcohol level done.
Jinny: (standing up, finding her voice) What?! I....You don’t trust me? How could you...
Kate: You make that difficult, yes.
Jinny: I was with Magda, and CD and Nate. When did I have the time...
Kate: The locker room, Jinny? How much did you have to drink in there?
Jinny: Nothing. I just, (sits back down, discouraged, throws her hands up) I’ll go. You’re not going to be happy until I do.
Kate: (shakes her head) No. No, I’m not.
(Jinny gets up and slams Kate’s door as she’s leaving, for the second time that day. She throws her jacket down at her desk as she walks by Magda, who tried to speak to her. Jinny ignored her as she walked out of the Felony Division and to the elevator. She pushed the button, but immediately decided that it was taking too long and headed for the stairs. Apparently, the captain had called downstairs to the lab, because they were expecting her. Jinny rolled up her sleeve and submitted to the testing, eyes piercing everything she looked at. The tech that drew her blood informed her that the captain wanted her back upstairs in her office, when she was finished to await the test results.)
(Jinny rose and made her way back to the captain’s office, passed her companions‘ questioning eyes. She sat back down in the chair on the other side of the captain‘s desk, avoiding her eyes. Kate watched her fume for several minutes before speaking.)
Kate: I’m going to go speak to the arresting officer, right now, so sit tight. When the blood alcohol comes back, and you’ve had time to calm down, well discuss this further.
Jinny: Right. It’s not like I have anywhere else to go.
Kate: (makes eye contact with Jinny; breaks away after a few minutes, leaves)
(After about an hour, Kate returned and took her seat on the other side of the desk. She stared at the papers in her hand for several minutes, then sighed and looked at Jinny. She removes her glasses and takes a deep breath before she begins.)
Kate: You blood alcohol level is normal. (pauses for Jinny’s I told you so look) You give people every reason to mistrust you, Jinny. What was I supposed to think after being in the locker room with you today?
Jinny: (says nothing, continues to stare at Kate)
Kate: After some discussion with the magistrate, I have convinced him to release you on your own recognizance. There will be a court date set in the near future, make sure you appear. As for you job, Jinny (pause, Jinny gives Kate a hard stare) This can’t be good. I’m not so sure I’m going to be able to keep you afloat without drowning myself.
Jinny: (angry) And what exactly is that supposed to mean?
Kate: I mean, the repercussions of this could take us both down. “Cop strikes gay bar hopper.” You know they’re just looking for a reason to take you off the streets, and you’ve probably just handed it to them. I’m not going to lie, Jinny. I’ve kept you on the streets for three months, but I don’t know if I can pull this off or not.
Jinny: So what are you telling me? Huh? That going to rehab was useless? That spending the last three months, almost four months in AA, going to bed every night with cold sweats from thinking about drinking, was all in vain? That no matter how hard I’ve tried, they were just waiting for me to screw up?
Kate: (raised an eyebrow, said nothing)
Jinny: Why didn’t you just fire me to start with? At least then, I could be wallowing in my self pity, drunk and happy.
Kate: You weren’t happy, Jinny.
Jinny: What? And you think I’m happy now?
(Outside the captain’s office, Nate, Magda, CD and Raina were watching the discussion between Jinny and the Captain. The longer they watched, the more agitated they could tell Jinny was becoming.)
Nate: (to no one in particular) So, enlighten me. Why does the captain put up with Jinny’s whole attitude?
Magda: Nobody knows, but she has definitely taken a lot from her, and let her slide with a whole lot more than some others have gotten by with.
Nate: No offense or anything, but do you think it’s because Jinny is a woman? (all three women stare at him)
Magda: I think the captain sees the good in Jinny. Believe it or not, Jinny is a good cop, when she’s sober. Up until recently, that hasn’t been too often, but she’s really turned around. She’s doing really well. I’m proud of her.
CD: I think the captain sees a lot of herself in Jinny.
Magda: You’ve known the captain longer than the rest of us CD. What was she like when she was younger?
CD: Kinda like Jinny, but sober. She though she could take on the world and win. I guess in her own way, she has.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ta da! There ya have it! Another slice of pie (ain't life sweet?) Going to get off and do something productive now, like sleep. Good night.

Now, Dana, if you ask my four-year old, she can tell you, In this house "WHINERS GO TO BED!" :p

But here's more anyway.........

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(That evening, Jinny went home bypassing both her father and her brother, and went to her room. She lay on her bed for quite sometime, thinking about her life for the past three months. She had returned from rehab with such great expectations, having expected people to overlook her past and concentrate on her future as an inspector. Unfortunately, most had not done so. Of course Magda had made the appearance of doing so, Jinny thought, but had she really? And the captain’s ‘no hard feelings’ speech, had really made Jinny stop and think. Then there was Teddy. At least Teddy’s reaction had been an honest one. But then, she thought, his reaction summed up her whole life. She was losing everything of importance to her. First there had been her mother. Then there had been her boyfriend in high school. The only person she had given her heart to. Now, her job, which she could probably blame on nobody but herself. The same could be said for Teddy. It was her own fault that he couldn’t love her anymore. She had tried so hard to make it work between them; tried so hard to return the love he gave her, but in the end she hadn’t loved anyone but her alcohol enough. And now she had nothing to show for being sober. No home, no car, no love, and it seemed soon, no job. Wasn’t it supposed to be easier sober? Who was she kidding?)
(Jinny slept fitfully that night. Visions of her mother continually creeping into her dreams. Once, Jinny’s father, hearing her cries, had even come to check on her. He held her for some time, and like a child she had clung to him. She finally had fallen back sleep to his quiet coos, of “I’m sorry, Jinny Girl. I’m so sorry.” The next morning she had trouble climbing out of bed. She considered sleeping in, but knew it wasn’t in her best interests at the moment. She trudged out the door as John came in from working the hoot owl shift. They exchanged a few customary slurs and she continued on her way.)
(CD and Nate pulled up outside the home of Michael and Charlotte Franklin. They knocked on the door and it was answered by gentleman of medium build, who CD was sure, seemed vaguely familiar to her.)
CD: Aaron? Aaron Franklin?
Nate: Um, CD...
Aaron: Candy?
CD: (showing her displeasure with her old high school nickname) It’s Candace. And actually, It’s Inspector De Lorenzo. This is my partner, Inspector Basso, (she shows her badge) and we have a few questions to ask you.
Aaron: (hesitant) Um, okay. What about?
CD: About the disappearance of Valerie Shaw. The CPS worker who was scheduled to visit you yesterday. (looking around Aaron, into the house) Where are your wife and children? (he blocks her view)
Aaron: (nervous, runs his fingers through his hair) Um, they left me last week. Went to her mother’s or some place. I don’t know.
Nate: Funny, according to the neighbors, they were here three nights ago. Said there was a lot of yelling a screaming going on. Your son was present at school four days ago, but hasn’t been since the night in question. Care to explain that?
Aaron: Um, well, it hasn’t been quite a week since they left. I’ve kinda lost track of time since she left me. The kids you know, I miss them a lot.
Nate: Yeah, I’ll bet. What did you and Valerie Shaw discuss day before yesterday?
Aaron: Valerie who? Oh, yeah, from CPS, you said. I don’t know. She was never here. I was home the entire day, but no one came by. Why? Was she supposed to?
CD: (gives him a look of disbelief) Mr. Franklin,
Aaron: Michael, please.
CD: Mr. Franklin, we know that Mrs. Shaw was here. What we don’t know, is why she hasn’t been seen since. Can you explain that?
Aaron: (nervously) What proof do you have that she was here? If she came here, I didn’t see her. She didn’t talk to me.
CD: Then who did she talk to? Your wife?
Aaron: I don’t have to talk to you. I don’t know what you’re talking about, and I want you to leave.
Nate: Fine. But I assure you, you’re not out in the clear yet. We’ll be watching you, and we’re going to find Mrs. Shaw. And you’d better pray we find her alive.
(Nate and CD turn to leave a nervous little man standing on his doorstep. They watch the house for a few minutes before deciding they’d shaken him up enough, and then pull out and leave.)
(Jinny turned in time to see her walking into her office. She glanced over at Magda who just looked at her and shrugged, and walked into the office. For some reason, she feared what was about to come. Maybe it was because the captain wasn’t smiling, but then did she ever? The captain motioned for Jinny to be seated, and began once she was comfortable.)
Kate: I just got out of a meeting with the boys uptown. Charles isn’t well pleased with the occurrences of last night. Seems that this Sharon Milam that you struck last night, is a member of a small gay rights group here in the Bay area. They are crying foul and are agreeing to keep this low profile, only if you do not remain on the job. If you remain employed by this detachment, they are threatening to push for this to go beyond domestic violence and having you charged with committing a hate crime.
(Jinny opens her mouth to speak, but the captain holds up her hand to silence her and continues.....)
Kate: I’m sure you are aware of the consequences of such a charge. California penal codes sections 422.6 through 422.95, up to a year in jail and/or fines of up to $5000.00 and/or up to 400 hours of community service and that’s not to mention your license. Stakes are high, Jinny. How much are you willing to gamble?
Jinny: Hate crimes? Captain, I didn’t hit her because of her sexual preference. I hit her because her sexual preference was ME!
Okay, here's more......(such a woman of words, aren't I?)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jinny: Hate crimes? Captain, I didn’t hit her because of her sexual preference. I hit her because her sexual preference was ME! Had it been a guy, I would have...

Kate: It wasn’t a guy, Jinny. You’re treading on thin ice.

Jinny: Cap’n, I’m not prejudice. I... (pause, thinking, should she reveal her brother’s deepest secret?) I can’t explain to you why, but you’ve got to...

Kate: Casey?

Jinny: (stopped, dumbstruck) How did you...

Kate: I told you, I have my ways. Don’t you think that I know a little something about my officers?

Jinny: Casey’s never told...(changes direction) That doesn’t have to go anywhere does it? For him?

Kate: Might help your case.

Jinny: Won’t help him any.

Kate: (shrugs) Your decision. As for now, though, you’re off the streets.

Jinny: (angry, if looks could kill...) You’re suspending me?

Kate: No. Not yet. I don’t have a choice in this right now, you’re off the streets until we can resolve this. For now, you’ve got desk duty. Let’s just hope that’s enough to satisfy them. We really don’t need this going public. YOU really don’t need this going public.

Jinny: May as well suspend me. Cap’n, I want to be out there where I’m most useful.

Kate: You’re most useful out of the public eye, right now.

Jinny: (shakes her head) I can’t believe this. Are we finished?

Kate: Yeah, I think so. Be prepared to be served with a subpoena to appear in court. We’ll meet with the department’s attorney tomorrow, and go from there. Leave my door open on your way out.

(Jinny got up, still staring angrily at Captain McCafferty. She turned and opened the door, slamming it as she exited the office. She stopped just outside the door, unable to think of what to do next in her anger. Magda and Raina just watched her for a short time.)

Magda: You keep that up and she’s going to be replacing that door before the week is out.

Jinny: (stares at her, blankly)

Magda: ME just called, finally. Said there was gun powder residue on the victim’s hand that matched the theory of a self-inflicted gun shot. Ready to break it to the family?

Jinny: (coming to her senses) Have fun. Compliments of her (throwing a glance back inside the office she came out of) I’m officially off the streets, (sarcastically) and so lucky to still have a job, period.

Magda: She what? She took you off the streets? Why?

Jinny: (walking over to her desk as she explains and sitting down) Because, it seems, that the woman I hit, is a member of a gay rights group, and they are wanting to push to have this declared a hate crime, and you know what bad publicity that could be for The Division. (pause, glancing back toward the captain’s office) Somebody might not get a raise this year.

Magda: Jinny. It’s not her fault. If it wasn’t for her, you probably would have a job at all, right now.

Jinny: Thanks, Mag, but I don’t need this right now.

Magda: You don’t? I’m going to go talk to this family. I don’t think there’s any reason to stand here and argue with that thick skull of yours right now.

(Magda left, leaving Jinny sitting alone at her desk. Raina had just returned from the file room with a couple of files for some of the other officers in the Felony Division. She looked at Jinny, wondering where Magda had taken off to without her. Teddy stepped into the Division a few minutes later, papers in hand. Before he had reached Jinny, he called her name.)

Teddy: Jinny, hey. (sits down on her desk and leans over, to afford to every ounce of privacy he possibly could in the open room) Hey, these are for you, um,...

Jinny: (takes the papers, looks at him) (sarcastically) Gee, you know, you really shouldn’t have. You think you could find a vase, I could put them in some water.

Teddy: (sadly) I thought it would be better for you be delivered by someone you know. I know they’re supposed to be delivered by an officer, but I figured, being an officer, you could deliver them yourself. Well, here they are, I’ll see you around.

(Jinny sits there holding the papers for a short time. As soon as the door shuts behind Teddy she jumps up and follows him out the door. She catches him by the elevator.)

Jinny: Teddy, I’m sorry. I’m just...I’ve just really had a bad past couple of days. Can we talk for a minute?

Teddy: Jinny, I don’t think that would be...

Jinny: Please. Just for a minute.

Teddy: (nods, takes her arm and leads her to the window, out of the way) I don’t have much time. I’m due in court soon.

Jinny: (nods) Okay. (pauses, shrugging) You think you could defend me? I mean...

Teddy: Jinny, I don’t think that is the greatest of ideas.

Jinny: (she puts a hand on his lips) Please, Teddy. I’m supposed to meet with the division’s attorney tomorrow, but I don’t even know him. I don’t want to talk to a perfect stranger about this. I know you, Teddy. And despite what has happened between us, I think I could still trust you to defend me. Please. I’ll pay you. I don’t know how, right now, but I’ll pay you.

Teddy: Jinny, I’m a prosecutor. I haven’t defended anybody in years. I don’t think I’m your best choice. The division’s attorney is good, Jinny.

Jinny: And biased. They don’t want me back on the streets, Teddy. Do you really think that he’s going to defend me? He’s going to walk me right into the middle of the circle of wolves, set me down, and run like hell. I’m not asking for a relationship, just a friendly face. Please.

Teddy: (sighs, thinking) Okay. I’ll try, but I’m not promising anything, Jinny. I’ll have to see what I can clear from my agenda tomorrow to meet with you and your current counsel. We need to get together between now and then, I guess maybe this evening, over dinner. I’ll call you before I leave here.

Jinny: Okay. (nods) Okay, thanks a lot.

Teddy: Sure.

(They part ways, each returning to their own offices. It was the most Jinny could have hoped for, she knew that. At least they would be close, Jinny hoped that losing him would be easier, if she could have this time to say goodbye. She walked back into the office and to her desk. She looked at Raina, who stared at her briefly, giving her a look of sympathy. Jinny hated that look, even more so, when it was directed towards her. She started to snap at Raina, then thought better of it. She sat down and put her head in her hands. Jinny could hear the captain hanging up the phone through her open door.)

(Nate and CD knocked on a few doors in the neighborhood, asking questions. Each told them the same thing: a lot of yelling and screaming, children crying, lots of bruises on the wife. Several confirmed that the wife was present the day the CPS worker came, which would have been only two days prior. The last house they knocked on proved most enlightening and helpful. They knocked on the door, it was answered by an elderly woman.)

Lady: Hello, can I help you?

CD: Yes, Ma’am. My name is Inspector De Lorenzo (shows badge). This is Inspector Basso. We’re with the San Francisco Police Department. May we ask you a few questions?

Lady: Is this about that car in my driveway? I called you yesterday about that car in my driveway.

CD: (turns to look at the car parked in the lady’s driveway) Is that not your car?

Lady: No, ma’am. Some lady parked it there two days ago and never moved it. I don’t know who owns it, but I’d like for her to come back and move it. I don’t get much company, but I do occasionally need to get out, and I can’t walk that far. (hunkers closer) Arthritis you know.

CD: (nods) Yes, ma’am. We’ll check it out. May we come in? We have a few questions about one of your neighbors, if you wouldn’t care to answer them.

Lady: Sure, sure, come in. (after all are situated in the living room) I don’t know if I could tell you too much, I try to keep to myself as much as I can. I hate to cause anyone any trouble, but I need that car moved. That lady, she went into the house next door, you know, to the Franklins’. I never saw her come back. If you could just go next door, dear, and ask her to move her car. I hate to be a bother, but you know how it is to be old. (pause to look at CD and Nate) Well, maybe you don’t, but...

CD: (smiling) We’ll check into it. Do you know the Franklin’s well, Mrs...?

Lady: Jones. Estelle Jones. I’ve lived in this house for about fifty-seven years, now. Had it remodeled of course, right before my husband died, about twelve years ago. God rest his soul. He died of a massive heart attack. Never had a bit of problem in his life. I’m the one with all the health problems. Had a heart attack myself, few years back, and the arthritis, dear. Had pneumonia a couple of times, and then there was the knee surgery. But Jack, he was the strong, healthy one. You never really expect to outlive a loved one, one of you’s got to go first, sure, but I never expected it to be my Jack. Healthy as an ox, he was.

CD: (still smiling, patiently listening) I’m sorry about your husband, Mrs. Jones, but we really need to know about the Franklins.

Jones: Oh, yes, of course, dear. Listen to me rambling on. You don’t want to hear about my aches and pains. Well, my Jack used to say, “Estelle, you talk a mule out of his left leg.” (laughs) Most beautiful babies, there ever was, them two little ones. (puts a hand to her head) Now what was their names? Think Estelle. Oh, well, anyways, so precious, they were, and that little boy, “Charles Andrew,” he say. he was so proud to be a big brother. They called me Granny. I just thought that was so sweet. I’d always give them cookies when I saw them outside. Most broke me, when they got used to me. There Mamma, though, pitiful little ole thing. So sad to see someone have to put up with such a lazy, worthless, no good for nothin’, like that man of hers. Couldn’t even get him to mow his own lawn. Why, I offered to pay him twice what I paid my last boy, just cause I felt sorry for him, but he just didn’t have the time, he said. I don’t know why not, sure didn’t do anything else but make that girl and them kids miserable.

Nate: (quietly, thinking) Did you ever hear them arguing? Fighting? At night or in the daytime? Ever see him strike her, or the kids?

Jones: My hearing isn’t that good in my old age, (pause) you understand. Never heard anything, but saw plenty of them bruises he left behind. She used to come visit all the time and bring them little kiddies, but she was so ashamed, I think, she quit coming.

CD: How long has it been since you’ve seen her?

Jones: Well, (thinking) a couple of day, I suppose. She came over to use the phone. They couldn’t afford one, with him not working and helping out. I was busy with the children, so she could talk in peace. I don’t know who she called, but she said it was long distance, that she’d pay me when my bill came in. But I saw her leave that evening, and she was packed, I don’t think she’ll be coming back; at least, she won’t if she’s smart.

Nate: (nods) Could you describe the lady that got out of the car?

Jones: Well, my vision isn’t too good, either, you know. Old age is just such a bother. I think she had blonde hair, and maybe glasses. Oh, Estelle, think. Did she have glasses on? (back to CD and Nate) Why, yes I believe she did. Real business-like lady; dressed in a suit like and a skirt. Carried a satchel, you know, for like when you work in an office. I saw her go in, and I laid down for my afternoon nap. When I got up, the car was still parked there. She still hasn’t come back for it. Then Mrs. Franklin left with the children. You don’t suppose he’s moved another woman in there do you? Why the nerve of a man, to do such a thing. But I’ve heard of worse things happening this day and time. (shakes his head) I just don’t know about the world today. Are you sure dear, I can offer you some lemonade, or tea?

CD: (smiles, places a hand on Mrs. Jones’) No, thank you, Mrs. Jones. We’ll be leaving now. We’re going to check out the car and maybe call a wrecker to come get it. So we’ll be in the yard for a few minutes yet.

Jones: Take your time, dear. You are just the sweetest thing. (walking them to the door) You come back and visit this poor old woman, real soon, now, you hear?

CD: (smiles) Good afternoon, Mrs. Jones.

Okay, well, church was good, even if it was a youth meeting, and I'm (not that) far from youth. So here's more........

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Magda got out of her car, and glanced up at the house before her. She walked up the steps and opened the gate. From out of nowhere and puppy came bounding toward her. She stopped and picked up the dog, and carried it with her, to the porch. She set it down, ruffling his ears one last time. She knocked on the door and waited. After a few minutes, Cassidy answered the door. She noticed Magda, but obviously looked around for Jinny. Not seeing her, Cassidy stood back and let Magda come in. Mr. Marshall met them in the hallway and showed Magda toward their sitting room.)
Scott: I’m sorry for not greeting you, Inspector. I was in the shower.
Magda: That’s okay. Um, I came to give you the final report on your wife’s death. I’m terribly sorry to have to tell you this. The medical examiner has inspected the body more closely and has determined that the evidence is synonymous with the initially determined suicide attempt. They’ve released to body to the funeral home, you can finish the arrangements anytime you like.(looking to Cassidy, trying to make up for Jinny’s absence) I’m sorry Cassidy. Inspector Exstead couldn’t be here today. She really wanted to be.
Cass: (nods, gets up, runs away in tears)
Scott: Cass...I’m sorry.........(Magda takes his arm)
Magda: It’s okay. Let her go. Give her some time.
Scott: (nods, extends a hand) Thank you, Inspector. I appreciate all you’ve done. For me, and for Cassidy.
Magda: My partner is who you need to thank for Cassidy. I’m just sorry she couldn’t be here today.
Scott: (nods) Thank you again.
Magda: Anytime. Good afternoon, Mr. Marshall.
(Magda leaves, standing outside the house for sometime, feeling sorry for the little girl in that house that now had to grow up without a mother. Magda’s thoughts traveled back to Jinny. She wondered what it was like for Jinny to grow up with three men, and no mother. It must have been rough. She couldn’t imagine not having her own mother, even now as an adult with a child. She depended too greatly on her. Magda got back in her car and returned to the station, slowly.)
(Nate called back to the station and asked Raina to run the tags on the car. They came back owned by Harold and Valerie Shaw. Nate thought he could see Mr. Franklin watching from the window of the little house next door, but once he looked that way, the curtain dropped quickly. They searched the interior of the car, discovering Mrs. Shaw purse and briefcase in the front seat of the car. CD tried the door with opened easily. She winked at Nate who just smiled and shook his head. CD sat down in the driver’s seat and unlocked the other doors from the panel on the door. Nate opened the other door and sat down.)
Nate: So, you want to drive this down to the station? See what we can find in here? (point to the briefcase)
CD: Sure. You want to drive this or my car?
Nate: You look comfortable there. Don’t get up. (holds up a hand for the keys to the patrol car)
(Magda met Nate and CD back in the parking lot, gathering items from the car that CD drove in.)
Magda: Hey guys, what’s up.
Nate: (piling things in Magda’s arms) Not a lot. Just discovered this car in a neighbor’s driveway. Registered to said missing person, Valerie Shaw and her husband. Someone’s not the brightest murderer on the chopping block.
CD: Where’s Jinny?
Magda: Officially on desk duty until everything is settled between the division and this gay rights group that that woman is a member of.
CD: (winces) Poor Jinny.
Magda: I tell you, I went to break the news to that family today, I thought she was going to bawl as soon as she opened the door and saw Jinny wasn’t with me. Jinny made connection with that kid.
Nate: That’s because she still acts like a kid. She has to take responsibility for everything she’s done some time.
Magda: (give Nate a hard stare)
(Magda followed Nate and CD up to the office, quietly. She sets her load down on CD’s desk and looks over to Jinny who had looked up to see what was going on, then back to the paperwork she was completing.)
Magda: Hey, Jin. What are you doing?
Jinny: Paperwork. See, you get to go out and do the work, and yeah, I get to sit here and write about it.
Nate: You know, you have a really bad attitude. The captain is only doing what’s best for the...
Jinny: For who? (Jinny stood up, now face to face with Nate) For the citizens of this county? or for her reputation and the reputation of those men sitting in that office upstairs? You know what, you just don’t know, okay. So don’t go there.
Okay, to show you people that I really am a good person, despite what Caitlin says about me;) .....lol, I'll post more....
(Jinny turned and walked toward the locker room the locker room, passed Captain McCafferty, who had stepped out of her office to see what was going on. Jinny waited until the locker room door was shut before she drew back and hit her locker as hard as she could. Magda pushed open the locker room door to see Jinny pacing back and forth, trying to regain control, she turned and hit her locker again as Magda advanced. Jinny put her head against her locker. She could sense Magda beside her.)
Jinny: It was supposed to be easier being sober, Magda. So when does it get easier?
Magda: Hasn’t it been easier?
Jinny: When do people forget?
Magda: Jin, it doesn’t matter if they forget or not. If you do your job and do it well, they can’t say anything.
Jinny: Oh, yeah? Just watch them.
Magda: Just wait until you meet with the lawyer in the morning.
Jinny: I’m not using the division’s lawyer.
Magda: What? Why not?
Jinny: What? So he can throw me to the wolves? He knows who signs his paychecks. I, um, (looks away) I have an independent lawyer.
Kate: (startling both of them) That’s probably the most intelligent decision you’ve made the last couple of days, but you didn’t hear that from me. I assume that your independent counsel will be present tomorrow morning?
Jinny: Yeah, he will. We’re meeting this evening.
Kate: Good. Now, I may not be able to put you out on the streets, but you are still employed by me, so pick your head up, and get out there and do the job that I’m paying you to do. This will be over soon enough, and I’ll have you back on the street.
(Jinny nods. She goes to the sink and wipes her face. When the cold water hits Jinny’s hand she holds it up for inspection. A few small abrasions, soon to be a lot of bruising. She thought she’d learned better than to hit lockers in high school. She went back to her desk and sat down, avoiding Nate’s stare.)
(Teddy was sitting in his office working on the deposition for a case he was working on. He wasn’t getting very far, he was still thinking about his earlier conversation with Jinny. He wasn’t so certain that agreeing to defending her was his smartest move, but he still loved her and didn’t want to see anything bad happen to her. There was a knock on his door and he looked up to greet his visitor.)
Teddy: Hey, George, what’s up?
George: Hey. I, um, noticed that you’re trying really hard to clear you calendar for in the morning. Are you okay, is there a problem?
Teddy: No. No, not at all. I’m picking up a new case. It’s, um, (just say it, Teddy) a friend of mine. (trying to convince himself) It’s not a problem.
George: Good. If you need anything, let me know.
Teddy: Sure, George. Thanks.
Okay, since I have Caitlin completely confused I'll tell her........I WAS JUST KIDDING!!!! But I'll post more now, just I was mean to her....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(CD an Nate contacted the husband of the missing woman and asked him to come to the station so they could speak with him. He arrived, excited to see his wife’s car sitting in the parking lot. When he arrived, Raina assisted him with locating the two officers that had contacted him.)

Nate: Mr. Shaw. (shakes his hand) I’m Nate Basso, this is my partner, Inspector De Lorenzo. We have located your wife’s car, unfortunately, she is still missing. We just have a few questions for you.

Harry: Okay.

Nate: Your wife ever talk about her job?

Harry: No, not really. I mean, she’s say, there’s this kid and his parents did this to him or that to him. But never any names. She took her job seriously. We never had any kids, and these kids, they meant something to her. It was her reprieve from coming home to a lonely house. We had a good relationship, but you know, you could tell there were days when nothing I could do, would make her happy. She’d just lay and look out the window at the neighbor’s kids and cry. I even bought her a puppy one year for Christmas, but it wasn’t the same.

CD: Did you ever consider adopting?

Harry: We considered it, but she knew what the system was like. We didn’t want some eight, nine, or ten year old that had an attitude, and the possibility of getting an infant are, well, next to none. They told us there was a ten year waiting list, we wanted kids while we were still young enough to enjoy them.

CD: (nods, sympathetic)

Harry: (becoming emotional) You found her car, do you know where she is, or if she’s alive?

Nate: We have a suspect, yes. But we don’t have any information on your wife’s whereabouts yet. We’ll keep you informed.

Harry: (nods)

CD: (opens the laptop found in her car and turns it towards Mr. Shaw) Is this familiar to you? Do you access to her documents on here?

Harry: No. This is her work computer. I never touched it. I know she’d bring it home with her to type her documents. A lot of times, she’d e-mail them to her computer at work. (Nate and CD exchange glances) Sometimes from home or in the field she called it.

CD: Thank you, Mr. Shaw. If you don’t mind, we’d like to keep these things and the car for a few days to have our people look everything over thoroughly.

Harry: Sure, that’s fine with me. Keep it as long as you need it to bring my wife home safely.

(Teddy glanced up at the clock and began to gather his things to meet Jinny at the coffee shop across the street. He’d hoped to get upstairs before she left so that he could walk her across the street himself, but once he arrived upstairs, he found she’d already gone. He turned to leave, but turned back to the person delivering the message.)

Teddy: Raina?

Raina: Yes?

Teddy: How well do you know Jinny?

Raina: Not very well, why?

Teddy: You get along well?

Raina: (unsure of what to say)

Teddy: (clarifying) Do you think she’s prejudice?

Raina: (nodding her understanding) Oh. Um, (shakes her head) no. I don’t think so.

Teddy: Is she discriminatory towards you?

Raina: We’ve had our differences, yeah. But I don’t think it’s because I’m black, just because I’m new.

Teddy: (nods)(stands there thinking)

Raina: Is there something else, counselor?

Teddy: This, girl that’s pressing charges against Jinny, this um...

Raina: Sharon Milam?

Teddy: Yeah, could you see what you can find on her? Any criminal records at all.

Raina: Sure. (nods, smiling) Yeah, I can do that. When do you need it?

Teddy: Court hearing is next Tuesday, say by this Friday. Give me a chance to look them over.

Raina: Sure. Want me to just give them to Jinny when I get them?

Teddy: No. No, if you don’t care, fax them downstairs to me.

Raina: Okay. I will.

Teddy: Thanks Raina.

Raina: Anytime, anytime.

(Captain McCafferty noticed Teddy outside her office talking to Raina. She called out to him as he turned to leave. He made his way to her door and stopped.)

Teddy: Did you call for me, Captain?

Kate: Yes, I did, come in, shut the door.

Teddy: (obeyed) I’ve only got a few minutes, I’m due to meet a client.

Kate: I understand. (pauses briefly) Do you think this is your wisest career move, Mr. Blumenthal?

Teddy: She told you?

Kate: It wasn’t that difficult to figure out, once she told me she had outside counsel. Seeing you out there talking to Raina just affirmed my suspicions.

Teddy: You never do know about Jinny, do you, Captain?

Kate: I know that she’s tried too hard the last three or four months to get ahead, to be brought down by something like this. If you’re not certain that this is something you want to do, Mr. Blumenthal, I would recommend you reconsider. I have a friend, who I think...

Teddy: No. I’m sorry. That statement was uncalled for. I’m willing to defend Jinny, regardless of the repercussions, it’s just that...

Kate: You trusted her.

Teddy: (nods) Yeah, I did.

Kate: I don’t know what happened between you, it’s really none of my business, but I do know that she was happy when she was with you. It was apparent.

Teddy: Then why did she drink?

Kate: Because she’s an alcoholic and that was who she was.

Teddy: (nods, thinking) (glancing at his watch) If that’s all, I really need to meet with my client.

Kate: Sure. Go ahead.

Okay, here's a little more, just to tide you over until I can finish the big speech....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Teddy got up and left the office, thanking Raina again on his way out. Once the door closed behind him he headed towards the elevators. He walked across the street to the little coffee shop and searched for Jinny. He found her sitting in the far corner of the shop and joined her. He set hit briefcase down before she noticed him. She looked up and smiled.)
Jinny: Hi. Um, thanks for doing this.
Teddy: (sitting down) Don’t mention it. Let’s get started. Tell me what happened.
(Jinny looks at him briefly, smiles, then begins to weave for him the events of the previous night. There is some discussion over their meal about what course of action to take. Things are settled for the night as they finish their meal.)
Jinny: Listen, Teddy, I...
Teddy: Jinny, don’t. Okay? (picks up the check)
Jinny: (takes check) It’s okay, I’ve got it.
Teddy: (takes check back) Have I ever asked you to pay for anything?
Jinny: (takes check back) (get ups to leave) But we’re not dating now, are we? I owe you big for this, and I know it. (turns and walks to the counter to pay for their meal)
(The following morning, Jinny, Teddy, and Captain McCafferty met at the elevators and made their way to the meeting with the Division’s Internal Affairs Department. They are ushered in immediately and seated before the Board of Inquiry. A man approaches Jinny and Captain McCafferty. He seems agitated with Teddy’s presence and questions the captain.)
Man: This is a closed hearing, Kate, who is this?
Kate: Robert Clayton, this is Theodore Blumenthal, the assistant DA. Inspector Exstead had chosen to exercise her right to obtain independent counsel. Thank you for your time.
Man: (glaring at Jinny, who was the only one sitting) You’ve probably just made the biggest mistake of your life.
Jinny: (smiles, slight nod) I’ll take my chances, thanks.
Man: (turns, gathers his papers, leaves)
(Teddy and Captain McCafferty return to their seats facing the five-man Board. The man seated in the center open a folder, reads, then looks up to the three seated across from him.)
Man1: Inspector Exstead, this Board of Inquiry has been convened by the Internal Affairs Department to establish you credentials and to determine if you employment should continue with this department. You have been charged with, at the bare minimum, assault with the possibility of advancing to a hate crime. We will now hear your defense.
Okay, okay, just checking.........Here's the defense........
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Teddy: Thank you. Theodore Blumenthal, defense counsel. Gentlemen of the board, Jinny Exstead has admittedly had her share of problems over her nine years of service as a police officer and most recently as an Inspector for the San Francisco Police Department. Inspector Exstead has suffered from a debilitating disability for many years. She is an alcoholic. (pause, searching faces) But even over this rocky road, you have chosen to carry her employment, with only a suspension. Since her return almost 120 days ago, she has dramatically turned her life around and overcome this disability. Now, as a recovering alcoholic she has complied with all stipulations set forth and has met them successfully. I want to take a minute and review for you what is defined as a hate crime. California Penal Code 13519.6 defines a hate crime as “any act of intimidation, harassment, physical, or threat of physical force directed against any person, or family, or their property or advocate, motivated either in whole or in part by the hostility to the real or perceived ethnic background, national origin, religious belief, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation, with the intention of causing fear and intimidation.” My question to you is not DID Inspector Exstead use physical force to deter Miss Milam. Admittedly her answer is yes. But the question I want to pose to you, is this: Had Miss Milam been Mr. Milam, would anybody have given it a second thought? Would it still have been considered inappropriate to the point of call this a hate crime? No. I don’t think so. That has become an accepted norm. Miss Exstead did not strike this woman solely because of her sexual preference. This physical assault, as you call it, was not carried out to cause undo fear or intimidation, to this woman. Miss Milam, was inebriated to a point that her cognition was impaired. Miss Exstead struck this woman once after a verbal warning to curb any further sexual advances was not heeded. Need I review what the California Penal Code defines as sexual harassment? Charging Inspector Exstead with committing a hate crime, would be a serious mistake. Inspector Exstead has come through for this department a number of times, solving cases that have had potentially negative endings, successfully. She assisted in identifying the nameless face of a small child, and brought her murders to trial. Inspector Exstead has the much needed experience that this department needs, and to not make use of her abilities, would be a crime in itself. Inspector Exstead apologizes for the humiliation that she may have caused this department in the past, but hopes that you will see beyond her faults and allow her to remain employed and in her present job as Inspector. We would like to thank you for taking the time to hear us, and we are open for any questions you may have. (nods and sits down)

Man1: (writing on a paper, looks up) That’s a very convincing argument, do you have any witnesses that can attest to the fact that this woman was making an unwanted sexual advance?

Teddy: There is one witness. Officer Raina Washington. She did not see Inspector Exstead strike Miss Milam, but was present during part of Miss Milam’s advance.

Man2: Only part?

Teddy: Yes, sir.

Man1: Inspector, I will direct this question towards you, and I would like you to answer it. The Anchorside is a bar, is it not? Were you intoxicated at this time?

Jinny: (Jinny could hear Teddy’s barely audible ‘calmly’ and sighed) (quietly) Yes, sir. It is a bar. No, I wasn’t drinking. I was with my partner and some other colleagues when this occurred, having dinner. I also submitted to a blood alcohol test and it was negative.

Man1: Captain McCafferty. Would be able to place Inspector Exstead back on the streets with a clear conscious?

Kate: Absolutely. I have complete confidence in her ability as an Inspector.

Teddy: My client is willing to admit that there could have possibly been a better solution to end the events in question, had she been given more time to consider them. She is willing to resubmit to the department’s class on tolerance and complete 150 hours of community service.

Man1: Very well. Thank you, that will be all for now. This Board of Inquiry will consider what has been said here today and let you know our decision as soon as we make a decision. That will be all.

(The members of the Board of Inquiry stood, gathering papers and left the room, leaving Jinny staring, gape-mouthed at Teddy.)

Jinny: I think I would have been better off letting the department’s lawyer handle this. Thanks a lot.

Teddy: (sighs) Jinny, you have to show them that you are willing to take responsibility for your actions. You’re not necessarily admitting fault, just that you’re willing to accept whatever judgment they return with.

Kate: Mr. Blumenthal is right on this one, Jinny. (raises her eyebrows and nods at Jinny as she turns to walk out the door)

Teddy: Listen, I’ve set up a meeting between the leader of this gay rights group and Miss Milam and her attorney for tomorrow afternoon, so we need to get together and discuss what we want out of this meeting. Can we get together this evening, do you have plans?

Jinny: (thinks) Um, yeah, I kinda do have plans for this evening, but it won’t take me long and we can get together somewhere. You know, actually, why don’t you join me? (thinking) For support, um, wear a suit.

Teddy: (suspicious) Okay. What are we doing?

Jinny: (turns and walks away)

Okay, here is a little before I go to bed for just a few hours. Today is the big Valentine's Day party at school and I just can't wait to get there and spend two hours with 17 screaming 3 & 4 year olds.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(CD and Nate are at the Department of Human Services with some computer techs from the Division. They are working very diligently to break into Valerie Shaw’s computer to find out if she has possibly sent anything referring to the Franklin’s case. They had been at it for about two hours when finally, they were in. The computer techs back away allowing CD and Nate the opportunity to search her most recent files with the help of Mary, the woman they had met a few days ago.)
Mary: (scrolls down a page) Okay this is around the time that she disappeared, so....(searching the screen)....Yes, here it is, (reading) From: Valerie Shaw, Subject: Harold & Charlotte Franklin.
CD: Do all of your caseworkers leave such open doors?
Mary: Valerie isn’t the only one that e-mails herself her finding’s if that what you mean. They don’t always have the time to sit in the office and document on their cases, so they’ll do it in the field and send it to themselves. Then all they have to do is review it and print it and put it in the file.
Nate: (looking at CD) Maybe that’s what we need.
CD: I can see the department buying us all laptops.
(CD and Nate scan the document and print several copies. They thank everyone for their help and call in their whereabouts, asking Raina to call for a warrant to search the Franklin’s home. They break for lunch while waiting for the warrant and are again on their way as soon as the warrant is secured. A short time later they are knocking on the Franklin’s door. It is answered by ‘Aaron’ Michael Franklin.)
Aaron: Hi, Candy. Any new word on the whereabouts of that woman?
Nate: No, but, um, we were hoping you could help us out there. Me and my partner, (stresses) Inspector De Lorenzo.
Aaron: Sure, (glances around nervously) come on in.
CD: (after being seated) So, um Mr. Franklin, why did your wife leave after this caseworker was here the other day?
Aaron: Um, she left a week ago, she wasn’t here when the case worker came.
Nate: The other day, you said that she wasn’t here, Aaron. So which is it?
Aaron: Well, she was here, yeah, but she asked to talk to my wife, and I told her she wasn’t here and so she left. I don’t know what she wanted.
CD: According to the document Mrs. Shaw left on her computer at work, she was here, Mr. Franklin. She spoke to both you and your wife, and had informed you that she would return with an officer to remove the children from the home. There was a called placed to the department asking for an officer to meet someone at this address, but then the call was rescinded a few minutes later, can you explain why she would do that?
Aaron: (very nervous) I don’t know, I just I...
Nate: We have a warrant to search this house and property and it would be a whole lot easier for us and you if you’d just tell us where you hid the body.
Aaron: I didn’t kill anybody! (slumping onto the couch in tears) I just, I didn’t want her to take my kids. I love them, and I...
Nate: Where’s the woman, Aaron?
(Aaron Franklin finally gave in. He confessed that the woman was hidden in the basement tied up. He said that his original intention was to kill her, but he didn’t have the heart to do so. He was taken to jail, and Valerie Shaw was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor wounds and dehydration, and reunited with her husband.)
(Teddy was to pick Jinny up at her father’s house that evening. She made sure to meet him at the door to avoid any questionable comments her brother may possibly make. Teddy could tell she had changed, but she was still in black slacks, a black shirt, and a black blazer. He waited until she was in the car and seat belted before he drove off.)
Teddy: So, um, since I’m driving, you want to clue me in on where we’re going?
Jinny: (slight smile) Crimson & Blake.
Teddy: A funeral?
Jinny: (looks down) It’s a long story, I won’t be long, I promise.
Teddy: That’s fine, but why?
Jinny: Um, this case I’ve been working on. The Marshall’s. Wife, um, killed herself. Magda said the girl was really upset that I wasn’t there when she broke the news to them, um, I just thought that maybe, (pause) You know what, we don’t have to do this, if you just want to...
Teddy: No, no that’s fine. I don’t mind at all. If you feel like this is something you need to do, I’m for it, sure.
Jinny: (smiles) Thanks.
(Teddy looked her way and smiled, but she was looking away from him, out the window. He pulled into the lot at the funeral home and parked. They sat silently in the vehicle for a few minutes until Teddy got out of the car and rounded it to open the door for Jinny. She looked up at him and accepted his hand. She got out of the car and walked slowly towards the building. When she was half-way there, she stopped and turned around, heading back toward the car.)
Jinny: You know what? I can’t do this. I..I..I thought I could, but I don’t think I can. Let’s just go back to...
Teddy: Jinny, stop. (he caught her in his arms) You came to do this, for some reason. For you or for that little girl, I don’t know, but you’re here. (takes her hand) Come on, I’ll hold your hand, if you want.
Jinny: (smiles, shyly) (nods) Okay.
(Jinny turns back around, takes a deep breath, heads toward the building with a renewed confidence. Teddy opens the door for her and they step inside together. Standing before them is a tall, husky man in a suit.)
Man: Good afternoon. Are you family?
Jinny: No. I’m...
Man: I’m sorry, I’m going to have to ask you to return in an hour. This time is dedicated to the family of the deceased. (Jinny pulls her badge out of her blazer and shows it) Very well. This way please.
(Jinny follows the gentleman into the sanctuary, where there are several people assembled, many in tears. Jinny locates Cassidy and sits down beside her. Teddy takes a seat behind them. Cassidy looks up at Jinny.)
Jinny: Hi.
Cass: Hi.
(They sit in silence for several minutes. Cassidy is staring at her knees, tissue in hand, but unused. In the other hand is a photo, Jinny assumes to be Sarah Marshall. Mr. Marshall notices Jinny by Cassidy and comes over.)
Scott: Inspector. (extends a hand, they shake) I’m surprised to see you here.
Jinny: I owe you an apology for the other day, Mr. Marshall.
Scott: No. That’s quite all right. Don’t think anything of it.
Jinny: (smiles, nods) Thank you. I’m sorry for your loss.
Scott: (turning to someone who had called for him) Excuse me. Thank you for coming. I do appreciate your concern for my daughter.
Jinny: (watches him walk away and sits back down) (all is quiet, again)
Cass: (out of no where) Why is the casket closed? Why won’t the let me see my mom?
Jinny: (can recall asking the same question, not quite as calmly) Well, Cassidy. Sometimes, when they can’t.. (pause, no use sugar-coating it) They can’t fix everything, Cassidy. And well, (takes the picture from Cassidy) This is how you want to remember your mom, Cassidy. (looks toward the coffin) Not like that. Your mom, (pausing, reminiscing) Your mom was all the good things in life; cheap perfume and Downy fabric softener, ribbons and lace on the holidays, and fresh baked cookies on Tuesdays. That’s what you want to remember, not that.
Okay, sorry. Keep your tissue, you may still need it for a few minutes. Here's what I have have typed, I'm off tomorrow, so I'll type what I have written and post more.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Teddy couldn’t hear everything from the few seats back that he was sitting, but he could tell that doing this meant a lot to Jinny. He watches the conversation for a few minutes, seeing the little girl break down into tears, and seeing Jinny wipe at her own. Teddy thinks back to the events of earlier that morning and the things he’d had to say in her defense. “Since her return almost 120 days ago, she has dramatically turned her life around and overcome this disability. Now, as a recovering alcoholic she has complied with all stipulations set forth and has met them successfully.” So why did he have problems accepting her return? “Inspector Exstead apologizes for the humiliation that she may have caused this department in the past, but hopes that you will see beyond her faults and allow her to remain employed and in her present job as Inspector.” She had apologized to him, as well, so why couldn’t he see beyond her faults? Why couldn’t he take her back? He loved her, and he realized that now, even more so, after watching her tenderness with this child. Could he honestly defend her and not believe in her? He felt a tear come to his own eye and immediately wiped it away. He brought his thoughts back to the present before he talked himself into something.)

(Shortly, Jinny hugged Cassidy for some length of time and got up. She walked back to Teddy, who stood waiting for her to reach him.)

Teddy: Ready to go?

Jinny: (quietly) Yeah.

(They leave funeral parlor and Teddy takes Jinny back to his apartment. He offered her a seat on the sofa and went for them something to drink. He set the sodas down on the coffee table and opened the folder laying before them. They spend a short time talking, Teddy getting closer and closer as they discuss their plan of action for the following day. As they end their discussion, Jinny looks up to see Teddy looking at her.)

Jinny: (smiles) Hello.

Teddy: (smiles) Hi.

(Jinny returns his gaze, looking deep into his eyes. She can feel herself losing her handle on this situation. She moves her face closer to Teddy. As she is about to meet his lips, she closes her eyes and tips her head back slightly. Teddy makes a noise and Jinny opens her eyes to see him backing away.)

Teddy: Jinny, I can’t do this. I’m just not sure if I’m ready for this. You know, I trusted you once. Maybe this was a mistake bringing you here. If I gave you the wrong impression, I’m sorry.

Jinny: (dumbstruck, knowing he’s probably right) It’s okay, I understand. Can, um, can I use your phone, I’ll call a cab.

Teddy: No, I’ll take you home.

Jinny: No. That’s okay. (gets up, heads for the door, obviously upset) I’ll call a cab. I’ll be okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.

(Teddy could just kick himself. He had wanted that so badly. Why had he stopped it? Why couldn’t he just let go. He knew she had changed. Knew that she was different, and that she was trying really hard. He turned to go after her, but she was gone when he stepped out of his door.)

(Jinny is sitting at a corner booth in a small bar across town. Sitting around her on the table are several empty shot glasses. She is beyond caring about her pathetic life. Her job was in jeopardy, even still. Being sober was supposed to have remedied that. That in itself deserved another drink, and she downed her last shot of vodka. She couldn’t even drink and maker herself feel better now. Magda tried really hard, Jinny had to give her credit for that. She should have minded her own damned business. And Teddy; she should have known it was over between them. But she let herself get caught up in everything that was going on and really messed herself up there. She had practically begged him to take her back. And seeing that woman laying there on that bed, her head half gone; and that poor little girl! God! All Jinny could see was her mom. Her mom, and that poor little girl crying in the bedroom, holding on to her baby brother. Poor kid. Poor little girl.....poor little Jinny girl.....the voices from that night still mocked her. A voice broke through her confusion and she looked up to see who it was. Didn’t she know him from somewhere?)

Nate: Um, Jinny?

Jinny: (looking up) (hatefully)

Nate: Jinny, what are you doing here?

Jinny: I’m having a drink, is that okay with you?

(Jinny picks up a glass, empty; another one, also empty; she picks up each glass, when she get to the last one and discovers it’s empty, she slams it down. She looks back up to Nate and smiles. She makes several failed attempts to get up. Nate takes her arm and helps her stand. She is eye to eye with him, she leans closer.)

Jinny: You look familiar. Have I slept with you before?

Nate: No, Jinny. Come on, I’m taking you home.

Jinny: Oh, (smiles) Okay.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gotta hot date (ha!) with a really great looking guy, so I may forget all about you guys tomorrow. (just kidding, I could never forget you guys!!) More tomorrow.
Okay, so you think I forgot about you. I thought about you, yeah.. I thought, they can wait. Hehe. Sorry. I do wuv ya'll, I do. But there are just a few things, I can think of that I wuv even more........:D Here's more......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Nate pays Jinny’s tab, wincing at her total. He didn’t drink that in a month. (Nate helped Jinny into his car. It was all he could do to keep her seated so he could concentrate on the road. Her hands roamed every inch of Nate’s body until he finally stopped the car and made her get in the back seat where she pouted until they arrived at Nate’s apartment. Nate helped Jinny up the stairs and to his apartment. He took her back to his bedroom so she could lay down. He immediately regretted his decision. Upon arriving in the bedroom, Jinny’s fire rekindled. She began kissing Nate as she unbuttoned her shirt. Nate put his hands on hers to stop her.)

Nate: Jinny, stop.

Jinny: Stop? Come on, no one that I’ve gone home with in the past has ever told me to stop.

Nate: No, Jinny. (forces her to sit on the bed) We’re not doing this. You’re going to lay here and get some rest while I figure out what to do with you.

Jinny: (runs a finger down the front of his messed up shirt) Well, I can think of something.

Nate: (moves her hand) So can I. Go to sleep.

(Nate left Jinny to sleep while he placed a call to the only person he knew of that he thought could help. Shortly, there was a knock on the door. Nate opened it and breathed a sigh of relief for the person standing there. CD looked around night for Jinny, then smiled and shook her head.)

CD: This is a poor excuse to get me here.

Nate: She’s in the bedroom.

CD: Oh, tell me you didn’t.

Nate: (smiles) Sleeping peacefully. (pause) Alone. Thank you.

CD: (returns smile) So what are you going to do?

Nate: I called you. What are you going to do?

CD: What happened?

Nate: I don’t know. She seemed pretty upset about something. I was just going to talk to her, but when I got closer I noticed she was drinking and I didn’t want to leave her there alone, but when I started to talk to her, she, um...

CD: She hit on you.

Nate: (nods) Yeah.

CD: (smiles sorrowfully) That’s the Jinny we all know and love.

Nate: So what do we do?

CD: Call the Captain and Magda.

Nate: (nods)

(CD spoke briefly to the captain for a few minutes and filled her in on what had happened and where they were at. She hung up the phone and sat down telling Nate that the Captain had hold her not to call Magda. She arrived soon after making very little small talk as she did so.)

Kate: (looking around) Where’s Jinny.

Nate: Sleeping.

Kate: (nods) Show me.

(Kate sat on the bed for several hours watching Jinny sleep, thinking of what to do with her. She knew Jinny had been doing well, had actually enjoyed being in the room with her on occasion. She wondered had happened to cause her to return to her old ways. Jinny puzzled Kate, because of all of her officers and inspectors, she knew the least about Jinny and Jinny had worked hard to keep it that way. As the alcohol began to lose it’s effect, Jinny began to whimper and toss and turn. Kate reached over and ran it down the side of Jinny’s face, brushing her hair out of her face. Jinny calmed down almost immediately.)

(It was almost three in the morning when Jinny roused. She stood up and walked across the floor, kicking her toes on Nate’s dresser. Kate could hear her cursing as she continued on. Jinny went on until she was almost to the corner of the room and began feeling the wall. When she couldn’t locate her bathroom door, she got mad and hit the wall several times. She turned around and slid down the wall, in tears, finally realizing what had happened. She remembered going into the bar just to get a drink. One drink. Just enough to calm her down after she and Teddy...)

Kate: Jinny, come sit down and talk to me.

Jinny: (turns to see Kate for the very first time) Oh, God. (still in tears) Tell me I didn’t.

Kate: And what if you did Jinny? You don’t remember. I could be anybody, or tell you anything. Or for that matter I could have killed you....

Jinny: You know what, enough is enough. Why are you here?

Kate: Where’s here? Do you even know where you are?

Jinny: (quiet, thinking) (shakes her head, no)

Kate: Nate saw you at the bar last night, he brought you home with him.

Jinny: (disgusted, embarrassed) We didn’t, (pause) did we?

Kate: I don’t know. That’s none of my business. What is my business is the fact that you’ve been sober for the past four months and now, here you are, drunk. What happened?

Jinny: I screwed up.

Kate: Yes, you did. But why? Tell me about it.

Jinny: Can’t you just stay out of my personal life?

Kate: I’ve tried to Jinny, I really have, but I’m not going to let you continue on this destructive path and do nothing about it.

Jinny: So what are you going to do? Fire me?

Kate: Neither of us is leaving this room until we’ve talked about this. I have two armed guards standing outside this room ready to catch us if we try to bail, and I’m only half-way joking.

(Jinny stood up and walked over to the door. She opened it to find CD and Nate standing outside the door, engulfed in their own conversation. When they saw Jinny, Nate took one step forward, but stopped when he realized Jinny wasn’t going anywhere.)

Jinny: (to Nate) We didn’t, um...
Nate: (smiled) No. nothing.
Jinny: (half-nod) Thanks.

Okay, since everyone is feeling bad, I'll post more to cheer you up to make you feel bad again.:D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Jinny shut the door behind her and turned back to Captain McCafferty. She paced for a few minutes, then spoke.)
Jinny: So, what? You’re holding me hostage. Kidnapping me? What? Why?
Kate: I’m not surprised that you had a set back, Jinny. Facts are, most do. I’m not angry that it happened. I am angry that you continue to fail to face up to the cause of this problem. I’ve tried to persuade you to talk to me, you won’t talk to Magda, who is one of the closest people to you right now. Who do you talk to? Tell me that.
Jinny: (silent, shrugs)
Kate: You’re going to talk to me. (long pause) Tell me what happened today.
Jinny: (shakes her head)
Kate: You’re living on borrowed time, Jinny. If you continue to drink, it’s going to end one day, and you’re not going to be any closer to the answers you want than you are now. Can you live with that?
(There is silence in the room for quite some time. Kate and Jinny are both lost in their own thoughts. Kate can tell there is turmoil in Jinny’s thoughts. She begins pacing more and faster, in an agitated state, nervously rubbing her arms with her hands. All of the sudden, she stops and sits down on the other end of the bed, but she still says nothing. She keeps going over and over the conversation that she had with that kid, and then with Teddy afterwards. God she was just so stupid for falling over him like that. She knew that he didn’t want to get into a relationship with her again, he’d told her as much. But she still had tried. The tears came rolling down again. She tried to stop them, but it was too much. Kate found a box of tissues and handed them to Jinny. She sat down beside her and put an arm around her, pulling her closer. She could remember sitting with Amanda and letting her cry when her father left. She was so young and it was so difficult to understand for a twelve year old. And she could remember consoling her after each break-up with “the greatest guy, cause he’s no like all those other guys.” It turned out that they were all just alike, and after a few days of sulking, she was right back in the game.)
Jinny: (finally calming down enough to talk) You know, I walked in there and I saw that woman, and I just lost it. I couldn’t see anything but my mother laying there, (staring off) her head gone, and all the blood. I could smell the blood as soon as I walked in the door, and I just...(shakes her head, still staring off) I just felt so alone. Just like when I was a kid, and mom... Everybody swarming around, and there I was, lost and alone. Nobody even stopped to say I’m sorry, nothing. And then went to see that kid, and it was like me all over again. Her face was...she was just somewhere else. Staring at the TV, she wasn’t watching TV. All those things I said to her, I remember them saying the same things to me, they didn’t help, she was still dead, and nothing they said was going to bring her back.
Kate: They weren’t meant to bring her back, Jinny. They were meant to be comforting. That’s all you can be at a time like that.
Jinny: Well, they weren’t comforting. They were just confirmation that she was still dead and never coming back. When you’re twelve or even fourteen, you don’t want to hear they’re never coming back. I needed her.
Kate: I know, Jinny. But you still had your dad and your brother. This kid doesn’t have anybody.
Jinny: For all the good they did. They wouldn’t even talk about her. They just pretended like she never existed. Even Casey. I asked him one time why he never talked about her, and he said it was easier that way. (trying not to cry again) It wasn’t easier for me. I didn’t want to forget her.
Kate: (listening intently) And you haven’t forgotten, have you, Jinny?
Jinny: How can you forget when you see it every night? Every time I close my eyes, there she is, calling for me. Sometimes, I just want to run to her, and I do, but then I get there and head’s missing and ...I get scared and I run away. I have to have something to get that out of my head, and..
Kate: And so you drink.
Jinny: (nods) I keep asking her why and she won’t answer me. Why wouldn’t she answer me? Unless it was my fault.
Kate: Jinny, you can’t blame yourself. You can’t...
Jinny: Then who do I blame?
Kate: Nobody, Jinny. For your mom to do something like that, she had to be sick. It’s hard to tell what she was thinking.
Jinny: (accusatory) My mother wasn’t sick. How could you say something like that? You didn’t know her!
Kate: Jinny, it isn’t a bad think to be sick. A sickness like that is often misunderstood. Had someone noticed it, and got her some help, maybe she would have been okay, but it’s too late to think what if. All you can do is not blame yourself. Think of all the good she was, not her death. You’re driving yourself crazy, Jinny always thinking about this. You’re going to end up just like her.
Jinny: Meaning?
Kate: Laying in the floor somewhere, with half you’re head gone. Tell me you haven’t thought about it.
Jinny: (silence)
Kate: You’re a good officer, Jinny. I don’t want to see you end like that. I don’t want to see you end like this. Losing your job to alcohol, you’re better than that.
Jinny: Looks like you’re going to lose me to this. Especially with Teddy defending me.
Kate: Excuse me? You and Teddy having difficulties?
Jinny: There is no ‘me and Teddy.’
Kate: He’s not going to defend you?
Jinny: No, he’ll be there tomorrow, but...(pause) You know that’s a long story, let’s just, forget it, okay.
Kate: I know that the two of you haven’t been seeing each other since you’re return from rehab, but I thought that with him defending you, that had changed.
Jinny: No. He made that quite clear tonight.
Kate: You got together to discuss tomorrow. What happened?
Jinny: You know, I don’t think that we should be...I mean, I don’t think this...
Kate: We’re not at work, you need to talk about this with someone, you can’t keep holding everything inside. Besides I was young once, not that I’m old now, but...I have a kid, and...(struggling to keep a straight face)...I may not be as experienced as you are, but...I’m sure there’s something I could do to...
Jinny: (smiles for the first time) Captain Kate, the expert on love and hate...(quiet, looking away) I loved him so much, you know. He had wanted to go away and talk about us...and I’d thought about it, and I was going to go, but he cancelled it and we haven’t spoken since. I’ve tried to call him for the last four months, since I came back from rehab, but he wouldn’t return my calls. Then I saw him the other day at work and I tried to talk to him. He said that he’d trusted me and loved me, but he...couldn’t do it again.
Kate: He dumped you.
Jinny: A long time ago apparently.
Kate: And tonight?
Jinny: Tonight? Tonight was a big mistake, apparently. He went to the wake with me and then we went back to his place to go over my testimony. We did fine until we finished talking professionally. You know, I looked up and there he was.
Kate: And?
Jinny: And I screwed up. I thought...(pause)...well, I don’t know what I thought, but we just got closer and we were going to kiss and then, he changed his mind. He said, he’d trusted me, but he couldn’t, now. I screwed up the only thing good I’ve ever had. And I don’t know how to fix it. (deep breathes, trying not to cry) And that’s when I went to the bar. I was just going to have one drink while I waited for a cab. I just needed something to calm me down, to make me feel better.
Kate: And how do you feel now?
Jinny: (putting a hand to her head) Like hell.
Kate: Thank you.
Jinny: What am I going to do?
Kate: You move on. You hurt him, Jinny. I don’t know how, but you did. You can’t keep being miserable and kicking yourself for every little mistake you make in your life. Apologize to him, clear you conscience and move on.
Jinny: You make that sound so simple.
Kate: On the contrary, I know how hard it is. Except, I had to apologize to myself for putting myself through hell for him. Do you know how difficult it is to forgive yourself? But, I had a daughter I had to take care of and she needed someone to take care of her, because I knew he wouldn’t be there for her at all, and I was right. He left, and I haven’t heard a word from him in years. You can’t dwell on the negative and get ahead. You just can’t do it.
Jinny: (nods, thinking)
Kate: Come on. I’ll take you home. Get some rest. You’ve got some sick time built up, I don’t want you doing this again, but I’ll give you this morning. Be fresh and ready for this meeting at one. I expect to see you at noon, and no later.
Jinny: Um, okay. Thanks.
Kate: Anytime.
I had this whole post typed and ready to post and I deleted it! Still haven't figured out how, but here it is...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Jinny arrived at the Division ten minutes ahead of schedule. Kate called her into the office as soon as she arrived. Magda gave Jinny a curious look, wondering where she had been all morning. Jinny sat down beside Teddy who was already in the room. Kate excused herself for more coffee, though she carried a full cup out with her. There was silence in the room for quite a while.)

Teddy: So are you ready for this meeting today?

Jinny: (quietly) Yeah. I guess I am.

(Silence)

Jinny: Teddy, I’m sorry...

Teddy: Jinny, don’t, okay. I just...

Jinny: No, could you hear me out, please?

Teddy: Okay. Sure...fine.

Jinny: I’m sorry that I hurt you, I am. We had something really good, and you can’t blame me for wanting that back. I know that you just want to put this is the past, and I haven’t made that easy, and I’m sorry. If you want me to find someone else to represent me, I will...

Teddy: No, Jinny. I told you I would represent you and I will. (tell her you still love her) I... (tell her you wanted last night as much as she did) (sigh) Apology accepted. Let’s...

Raina: (barges in with some documents) I’m sorry to interrupt you, but here are the papers you ask me for the other day. I’m sorry I haven’t gotten them to you sooner.

Teddy: (takes the papers, scans them) Thank you, Raina. I appreciate this.

Raina: You’re welcome. (leaves)

Jinny: (looking at the papers) What’s that?

Teddy: You’re lucky day.

Jinny: What?

Teddy: (big smile) Do you trust me?

Jinny: (suspiciously) I think.

(Teddy, Jinny and Captain McCafferty took the elevator downstairs to the meeting room Teddy had reserved for them. He greeted Sharon Milam’s lawyer and the president of the gay rights group. He ushered them inside and seated them. Introductions went around and then they began.)

Lawyer: We are pushing to have Inspector Exstead tried for committing a hate crime. We feel that she could have diffused the situation more appropriately, especially with her training as a officer of the law.

Teddy: Excuse me for one moment, please. You’re client was intoxicated in a public setting, for which we will push for prosecution in our counter claim.

Lawyer: Counter claim? Excuse me but...

Jinny: (shocked; this was not what they had discussed the previous night)

Teddy: I have here her blood alcohol level from that night, along with her drug screen. The alcohol level in her blood was .25, which far exceeds the legal limit of 0.1 Also found in her blood stream, were amphetamines and long list of others things. (hands him a sheet of paper) A copy for your records. Your client’s cognition was seriously impaired and I doubt anything Miss Exstead could have said would have deterred her. Sexual harassment is also a serious charge, for which is punishable by law.

Lawyer: Sexual harassment? This is ridiculous.

Teddy: Is it? If Miss Milam, had been Mr. Milam, would you have a case for assault? I doubt it. But, if Miss Milam, had been Mr. Milam, Miss Exstead would have a grand case for sexual harassment. I think we’ll add that to the counter claim, as well.

Lawyer: You’re just trying to overshadow the real issue here, and it won’t work, Mr. Blumenthal. Hates crimes are a serious offense, especially to an officer of the law.

Teddy: Granted they are. But the joke is on your client. Miss Black, (speaking to the president of the group) your group is taken very seriously because your members are a peaceful people. How do you screen you members?

Black: We do background checks from information the members provide.

Teddy: Are you aware then that Sharon Milam is a married name?

Black: No.

Teddy: And that Sharon Milam’s name is Sharon Gloria Hoffman Milam. The same Gloria Hoffman that participated in the protest a few years ago, at the Chapel of St. Mark, in which several injuries resulted; among other protests that were not all peaceful. I can give you a list of those arrests now, if you’d like.

Black: I wasn’t aware of that, no.

Teddy: I didn’t think so. Not after I reviewed your bylaws. We are willing to allow this to go to court, and we have a defense prepared, using the information we have just shared with you. However, I don’t think that it is in your groups’ best interest.

Lawyer: Mr. Blumenthal,...

Black: No. (placing a hand on the lawyer’s arm) Let me take this back to the members.

Lawyer: Are you sure that’s what you want?

Black: Yes.

Lawyer: Very well. We’ll be in touch with you.

Teddy: I anticipate your response. Thank you for meeting with us.

(They part ways with few words. Jinny and Kate returned upstairs to the Division, Teddy to his office. Jinny sat down at her desk and sighed. Everyone was watching her.)

Magda: Where were you this morning?

Jinny: Sleeping like a baby.

Magda: And what did the captain have to say about this?

Jinny: She said, take the morning off.

(Magda laughed. She wondered how Jinny talked the captain into that.)

Magda: So how’d your meeting go downstairs?

Jinny: It went okay, I mean, Teddy was great and all. I just hope what he said will get them to change their mind. Did you know that Sharon Milam was in on the protest at The Chapel of St. Mark a few years ago?

Magda: I didn’t know that. That’s sad though isn’t it? You can’t even go to church and be safe. They want to believe that it’s okay to be homosexual, and they want you to accept that they believe that way, but they don’t want to accept the fact that you believe it’s wrong.

Jinny: Not all gay people are like that, Mag. Some just want to have a relationship and be happy. They’re content to stay out of the public eye, whether the protest is peaceful or not. And I support their decision. (teasingly) Basically because, at least they have a relationship, and they’re happy. Churches and negative people should just leave it alone. Let them be who they are.

Magda: Are you saying that you support gay rights? (watches Nate and CD come in and sit down)

Jinny: I’m saying that I don’t care who you go to bed with. As long as you’re happy, and you’re not hurting anyone else, then go for it. And if you feel the need to tell me you’re attracted to me, fine. But when I tell you I’m not interested, (shrugs, hands up) back off. It’s that simple.

Nate: (turns and gives CD a devilish grin)

CD: (smiles) Shut up.

Okay, I know ya'll thought I had abandoned ya, but I've been working (and not real happy about it either) and I have to work tonight. I'm gonna post a little tonight and by tomorrow, I should have the rest of the last scene finished.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kate: (walking out of her office, purse in hand) You people going home tonight, or what?
Jinny: I’m for that. I’ve got to get some sleep tonight.
Magda: Oh? (smiling) You up late last night for a reason?
Jinny: (pause, should I tell her?) Um, yeah. I, um, (quietly) I had a little to drink last night.
Magda: (disappointed) Oh.
Nate: (mouth the words ‘a little?’ to CD)
CD: (smacks his arm)
Magda: Were you going to tell me? You could have called me, Jinny. I could have been there for you.
Jinny: I’m sorry, Mag. I should have called someone, but I didn’t and I’m sorry. I’ll call then next time instead of drinking. I promise. It didn’t give me the feeling I wanted, all I felt was guilty.
Magda: (staring at Jinny) (she finally nods) (she knew it would happen eventually, she’d read that in a pamphlet she got from King’s Point; she just wanted to be there for Jinny)
Jinny: (pulls Magda aside) Are you mad, Mag?
Magda: (thinks for a minute) Not mad. A little disappointed, yeah. You were doing so well, Jinny.
Jinny: I know, Mag. I just couldn’t think about anything else. I just...I wasn’t thinking.
Magda: (nods) As long as you know I’m here and you can call me anytime.
Jinny: I know. (pause) I will.
Magda: Okay, look, I gotta go get Ben, so...I’ll see you later, okay?
Jinny: Okay, bye.
(Jinny went home that evening and tried to enjoy playing poker with her family. She couldn’t concentrate on the game for concentrating on the alcohol before her. John Jr. was off the following day and was wasted before the game ever started, her father was not far behind him. Casey on the other hand, was everything he could to support Jinny, and had had nothing. She applauded his effort, but her concentration still lacked. She excused herself from the game to the heckling of the masses and returned to her room. She lay on her bed for some time trying to drive her desire for alcohol out of her mind. She stared at the phone for a long time before she finally decided to call Magda. She picked up the phone and dialed. The phone rang several times before it was answered.)
Jinny: (pause, listening) Teddy? Hey, look, I’m sorry to bother you. I, um, thought I’d dialed Magda’s number. I’m really sorry, I’ll let you go. (pause, listening) No. No, I’m okay. (she told herself to be honest), No really. I’m fine. I just...(pause), I um, I’ve been thinking and I...feel like I need a drink and Mag said I could call her and (pause, listening) What? (pause) Come over there? (YES!) No. Teddy, I...(pause) I don’t know...(pause)...Um, okay (nods to herself) Okay, I’ll be ready in twenty minutes. (pause) Okay, bye.
(She hung up the phone and sat there in disbelief. She couldn’t believe she was goin over there after all that had been said and done the past few days. She was confused. First he does everything he can to push her away and now? He was very insistent that she be there. She couldn’t figure him out. She got up off the bed and went to take a quick shower. She dressed and stepped out of her room. Teddy was there talking to John, Jr. about a case they had worked on, when Teddy saw Jinny, he stood.)
Teddy: Hey.
Jinny: (embarrassed) Hi.
Teddy: Ready?
Jinny: Yeah... Yeah, sure. I’m ready.
Teddy: Great. Let’s go.
JnJr.: Gotta watch her, Teddy. She’s a wild one. Ain’t seen a guy yet that could tame her.
Teddy: (looks to Jinny, he could tell she was embarrassed) I think I can handle myself. (smiles at Jinny)
JnJr.: Nobody can handle her.
Casey: Not even you John. I’ve seen her take you before.
JnJr.: Oh, Shut up! (to Jinny & Teddy) You two have fun, and no kissing on the first date. Or is this the second? Did you spend last night with Teddy? or some other dumb queer?
(Jinny pushed Teddy out the door to avoid more of John’s slurs. She got into Teddy’s car as he held the door for her and once he was in the drove off. What John Jr. had said struck Teddy’s curiosity.)
Teddy: So, um, what did John mean?
Jinny: (not paying attention) What ?
Teddy: John. He said you spent the night with someone last night.
Jinny: Ah, so now you care where I spent last night?
Teddy: Well, no. Just curious. If you don’t want to tell me, you don’t have to.
Jinny: Thank you.
Okay, I promised I'd finish the scene today, and here it is, I hope you're not too disappointed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(They finished the car ride in silence, both lost in their own thoughts. Teddy jumped out of the car and opened the door for her. He extended a hand which she accepted and they climbed the stairs to his apartment. He opened the door for her and turned the lights on as he followed her inside. He took her sweater and hand hung it with his jacket. She walked over and sat down on his sofa.)

Teddy: Hey, you want a soda?

Jinny: No. I’m fine, thanks.

Teddy: (sits beside her) (long silence)

Jinny: This is, um, (runs fingers through hair) really awkward.

Teddy: I know. I’m sorry. (turns to her) So, um, tell me why you called me. You needed to drink?

Jinny: (deep breath, she knew she had to be honest with him) Um, yeah. (pause) This is really hard to tell you, though, after everything, but...Yesterday, after I left here, I was really upset.

Teddy: (tell her you’re sorry, tell her you still love her) I know, Jinny...

Jinny: (puts a hand to his lips, gently) Just listen, okay?

Teddy: (nods) Sure.

Jinny: When I left here, I went to the bar, and I had a drink. And that drink led to another and another and well, you get the point.

Teddy: Yeah, I offered to take you home, Jinny...Why didn’t you let me?

Jinny: Because that would have hurt too much...You know, you’re sending me mixed signals. You tell me you don’t love me anymore, and that you can’t trust me, but then you bring me here and there’s last night, and now tonight, what am I supposed to think, Teddy? I...

Teddy: I know, Jinny. (takes her hands, which she has been waving, wildly) I know.

Jinny: (deep breath) It’s just that...(searching for the right words) I can’t do this anymore. I was so upset last night...I drank over you, and (pause) I don’t want to be that person anymore. I just can’t.

(Teddy just stared at her, amazed at what she was saying. This is what he’d wanted to hear all along. He’d wanted, not to just hear she’d changed, but know it. Now, he had his proof.)

Teddy: (emotional) Jinny, you may not believe me when I tell you this, but I never stopped loving you. When I walked away the other day, I just hurt all over. I went into that bar and I saw you with that guy and I just...I lost it. I lost everything I had worked so hard to get. I...

Jinny: I know and I’m sorry. I just...there’s no excuse, I know. I hurt you I’m so sorry. I wish I could go back.

Teddy: I know. Jinny, I just needed to know that you’d really changed because I couldn’t...I didn’t want to be hurt again. I know I hurt you in the process, and I’m sorry.

(Jinny stared at Teddy briefly. He sat back and put his arm around her, drawing her near. She didn’t hesitate, but lay her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes. She could smell the familiar cologne, and she felt safe. It felt so good to be held again, and she held onto him tightly, afraid to let go; afraid to open her eyes, that she would discover she it was just a dream. Teddy roused her after what seemed like such a short time.)

Jinny: (still groggy) What? What time is it.

Teddy: Um, eleven. We’ve go to be at work in the morning. Let’s go to bed.

Jinny: I need to go home.

Teddy: You still have clothes here; stay. Come on, I’ll walk you to the bedroom.

(Teddy extends a hand to Jinny, who accepts it. He helps her walk down the hall and to the bedroom. He gives her one of his shirts to sleep in and watches her change. Once she is in bed, with her eyes closed, he stands above her and watches her, the light from the hallway all that is illuminating her face. He couldn’t believe that he’d let her go. He reaches over her to get the second pillow from the bed. Jinny feels the weight shift on the bed and opens her eyes.)

Jinny: (looking up) What are you doing?

Teddy: Nothing. Go to sleep.

Jinny: (sitting up) Teddy, this is your room and your bed, if anybody is sleeping anywhere else, it’s me.

Teddy: No, you need your rest.

Jinny: Then stay. Hold me. Please.

Teddy: You’re sure?

Jinny: (nods, slowly) Yes.

(Teddy can see that she is sincere in her plea and does as she asked. She turned over and paid her head on his shoulder, wrapping her arms around him. He followed suit, drawing her closer. He rested his chin lightly on her head and settled himself in for a long night. He lay awake for several hours thinking about how good it felt to hold her again. He finally concluded that he’d made the right decision and drifted off to sleep.)

(Teddy took Jinny back home to get her car and met her in the parking lot at the Central Division. He opened her car door and waited for her to get out. They stood there for a few minutes talking before beginning toward the building. Nate and CD were in their car when Nate noticed Jinny and Teddy.)

Nate: Hey, I’ve seen that guy before, who is he?

CD: (smiling) ADA Teddy Blumenthal. He and Jinny were together for a while before she went to rehab. (starts car)

Nate: So what happened?

CD: No one knows for sure. But it looks like they’re trying again.

Nate: Didn’t figure Jinny to be falling for a guy like that.

CD: (teasing Nate) What? You expected her to fall for a guy who goes for wild abandoned sex?

Nate: Very funny. No, I just figured her leaning more toward the big masculine guy who could handle a girl like her.

CD: Jinny has had a lot of problems in her past and she needs someone who can be there for her; some one she can talk to, not some big-headed macho guy that’s too into his own looks to care about her or someone who would throw her around.

Nate: (matter-of-factly) She’s been abused?

CD: (driving) I don’t know that. She doesn’t talk to me about her problems. I know that the intervention that Magda held for her, she told us that she drank to block out the memories of her mother’s suicide.

Nate: Oh?

CD: She shot herself in the head, in her own home. Jinny was the one that found her, at the age of 14.

Nate: (silence)

CD: About a year ago, Jinny went on a drunk and was missing for three days. Magda got a call one night to come down to the station and get her. Someone had found her behind a bar, drunk and half-naked. They took her to the hospital but she refused the rape kit. So we don’t know for sure, but...Either way, she doesn’t talk about it and probably never will.

Nate: She doesn’t talk to anybody? Not Magda, or this Teddy guy? Nobody?

CD: Not really, no.

Nate: So, her sarcasm, it does what? Punishes everybody around her because of her poor miserable life? Who wants to be around some one who is constantly cynical of everything.

CD: I think that’s the point. I don’t think it’s so much to punish everybody else, but to punish herself by pushing everything good for her away. You should have seen poor Teddy trying to get her to go out with him.

Here's a little more of this seemingly never ending saga....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Silence settled over the two in the car as CD continued to drive toward their destination. Nate began to think about what CD had said. He felt truly sorry for Jinny and her bad life, but then he couldn’t help thinking that she should have quit drinking a long time ago.)
(Jinny and Teddy part ways and Jinny walks into the Felony Division, quietly. Magda couldn’t decide if Jinny was happy or sad, her expression changed every few minutes. She could tell that Jinny was obviously having a conversation with herself.)
Magda: Hey, you look happy, I think.
Jinny: (smiles, still thinking) Morning, Mag. I don’t know, either.
Magda: Well, you’re the only one that would know. What’s up?
Jinny: Nothing, much.
Magda: (eyes Jinny, doubtfully)
Jinny: (sighs) It’s Teddy.
Magda: Teddy? What’s he done now?
Jinny: Nothing. I was trying to call you last night and I dialed his number instead.
Magda: Oh? (eyes wide, curious) And?
Jinny: And, (shrugs) I went over there, and we talked.
Magda: (eyes wider) And? (pause) Don’t leave me hanging here, Jin.
Jinny: And, (pause) I spent the night there.
Magda: Oh. (pause, studying Jinny) You don’t look so happy about that.
Jinny: What if it’s a mistake, Mag?
Magda: Did it feel like a mistake last night?
Jinny: We didn’t do anything. He was even going to sleep on the couch. I told him no.
Magda: So? Did it feel right?
Jinny: Yeah, but...
Magda: If it feels right, go for it. You two were so good together.
Jinny: That was a long time ago, Mag.
Magda: Not that long ago. You’re way too hard on yourself. You deserve to be happy, Jinny.
Jinny: I know. I just...(pause, exasperated) I know.
Magda: Okay. Then, be happy.
Jinny: (smiles as Kate walks out of her office) Okay. Thanks, Mag.
Kate: What are you two doing today?
Jinny: Oh, I don’t know, (pause, looking to Raina sitting at her desk, trying to ignore the earlier conversation) I thought I’d have Raina teach me how you like your coffee, for starters. (smiling)
Kate: (glancing sideways at Jinny, trying not to smile) The Board of Inquiry has decided to leave your fate up to the judge and jury. If they exonerate you, then you still have a job.
Jinny: Well, that’s better than I could have expected.
Kate: Thing is, you’re still off the streets until they trial is over and a verdict has been issued.
Jinny: And that will take...?
Kate: You know the court system. It could take weeks or even months.
(Jinny nods, sitting down at her desk; her good mood dampened. Magda left most running errands for Captain McCafferty. She, along with CD and Nate returned for lunch and they all made their way to the Anchorside to enjoy their lunch. They were about half-way through their meal when Teddy appeared at their table.)
Kate: Mr. Blumenthal, it’s good to see you again.
Teddy: (nods) Captain. (to Jinny) Can I talk to you for a minute.
Jinny: (shrugs) (that face, he’s going to tell me last night was a mistake) Sure.
(Teddy extends a hand for Jinny and helps her out of the booth. They go over to a table for set for two and he holds the chair out for her. He then takes his own. Kate, Raina, Magda, CD, and Nate all watch their conversation for a few minutes, talking amongst themselves. They watch as Teddy hands Jinny a paper and as she reads it. At first she shakes her head, but then after some discussion, she nods her agreement and they both get up. Jinny meets Theodore and they hug. When Jinny pulls back, they watch her wipe away the mascara streaks running down her cheeks. Once she has regain her composure, they return to the rest of the group. There is silence between them for a few minutes, everyone afraid the be the first to speak.)
Teddy: Miss Black, from the gay rights group doesn’t necessarily want their name linked with this Sharon Milam’s. They have convinced Sharon Milam to drop all charges, in exchange for our not going public with her criminal record. She informed me that she had had an anonymous visitor and that she could see where this misunderstanding had gotten out of hand. She has agreed to stop the criminal proceedings against her for hate crimes, if she will agree to completing the Division’s course on tolerance again. I ran this by the Board of Inquiry this morning and they have reluctantly agreed to this arrangement, provided that she doesn’t return to the streets until the course is complete.
Kate: Couldn’t ask for a better conclusion.
Jinny: Well...(a stare from Kate, stops her) I agree.
Kate: (nods)
Jinny: Is there anyway I could...
Kate: (nods) Go on. I don’t think I’m gonna get any work out of you the rest of the day anyways.
Jinny: Thanks, Cap.
Kate: Get out of here before I change my mind.
Jinny: Right.
Ok, so I printed out this fic last night, all 60 something pages, and sat down to read it. I must say I was mesmerized. It was one of the best all around fics I have ever read. You captured each character's personality so well, and everything you wrote I could picture them saying. I read the fic more than once, and plan to read it again tonight. You really should consider sending this in to LIFETIME...it couldn't hurt anything. I LOVED the Jin/Cap scene and how you resolved Jinny and Teddy's differences. There is so much great stuff about this fic. I'm also wondering, is the 'anoynomous source' Raina? This is such a great fic and I look forward to reading more of it, and more fics from you in the near future. You have a great writing ability. Keep it up!
(Sorry for rambling...)
Okay, here is the finale, (I fear to say that it will never live up to 'the boat scene') I hope it isn't too disappointing for all you guys. Let me know what you think.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Teddy walked back across the street with Jinny and followed her inside the Felony Division while Jinny retrieved her car keys, then back to the parking lot. She unlocked her car door and opened it. Teddy retrieved her keys from the door, reached inside, locked it back and shut the door.)

Jinny: (smiling suspiciously) What are you doing?

Teddy: (returns smile, shrugs) (opens his car door) Come on. Let’s go for a ride.

Jinny: (walks over and stands in front of him) Where are we going?

Teddy: (shrugs) I don’t know. Get in.

(Teddy pulls out onto the road and they drive in silence. He stops at a small market and instructs her to stay in the car. He’s gone for several minutes and returns, placing his purchases in the trunk. Upon his return he smiles at her and pulls back out onto the road.)

Jinny: (laughing) What are you doing?

Teddy: We’re going to celebrate.

Jinny: Celebrate what? I’m still being punished for doing nothing wrong.

Teddy: Jin, you still have your job, and completing a class on tolerance is nothing compared to what could have happened. You were looking at major jail time and fines, and...

Jinny: I know. It’s just that...I feel like they’re just trying to get rid of me.

Teddy: Well, I would agree that any cop committing a hate crime, should be dismissed. But you obviously impressed this Ms. Black.

Jinny: Impressed her? How? I’ve never met her before.

Teddy: Well, apparently, when she was leaving the other day, she overheard the discussion you were having with, I’m assuming by how she described her, Magda, in which you were defending the homosexual community.

Jinny: Oh. And then there was that anonymous visitor. Who was that?

Teddy: I don’t know. She just said that someone came by and talked to her about you. Said that he was a close friend of yours, but asked not to be named.

Jinny: (nods) Ah. I’d say secret admirer, but if he’s gay...

(Teddy pulled up outside his apartment building. He gave Jinny his keys and sent her ahead of him to open the door. When she was gone, he retrieved the items he had purchased from his trunk and followed after her. Once inside he quickly retreated to the kitchen with his packages, instructing Jinny to sit on the couch. He returned quickly and sat down beside her. They sat in silence for a few minutes, Teddy reached out for her hand. She returned the grip he had on her fingers and turned to look at him.)

Teddy: I’ve missed you.

Jinny: (smiles)

Teddy: I have.

Jinny: I’ve missed you, too.

(Their eyes were locked on each other’s as they drew near. Jinny closed her eyes as their lips met. This time Teddy did not pull away, but kissed her hungrily, for several minutes. Teddy finally backs away, still looking into her eyes.)

Teddy: (excited) You know, I still owe you a weekend.

Jinny: (momentarily confused) What? Why?

Teddy: I can’t get to Napa on such short notice, but I think I know where we can go.

Jinny: (realizing what he talking about) No, hey, listen, it’s no big deal. You don’t owe me...

Teddy: Yes, I do. I didn’t know how much you were looking forward to going away, and I’m really sorry that I had to cancel. I have no plans for this weekend and we need to celebrate.

Jinny: Teddy, no, really....(changes directions)....celebrate what?

Teddy: Oh, you’re innocence...your sobriety...us.

Jinny: Us? (looking down, playing with her pants) You’re sure that’s what you want?

Teddy: It’s not what you want?

Jinny: (smiles, looking down) Of course, it’s what I want, but...

Teddy: (interrupting) Then, come on. Go shower, I’ll make a phone call.

Jinny: (nods) Okay, where are we going?

Teddy: (smiles) Secret. Need to know basis only. (kisses her) Go shower.

(Jinny stood up, watching Teddy. She traipsed down the hallway, slowly, excited at the thought of spending the weekend with Teddy; her curiosity aroused by his secrecy. Jinny found that her curiosity was not the only thing aroused. She showered quickly, hoping to catch Teddy in his plan making, to no avail. He was laying on his bed when she returned from the shower to dress. He watched her dry off, and she found herself feeling slightly embarrassed, trying to remain covered. He stood and took the towel from her and threw it on the bed. Standing behind her, he ran his hands lightly down her arms and kissed her bare shoulder, taking her breath and making chill bumps stand over her entire body.)

Teddy: (quietly) Everything’s set. I just need to take you to pack and stop at the grocery store on the way.

Jinny: (smiling, trying to solicit information) How am I going to know what to pack?

Teddy: Jeans will be fine.

Jinny: Want me to help you pack?

Teddy: Done. (indicating his bags in the corner)

Jinny: (he must be as excited as I am) Wow.

(They made a brief stop at Jinny’s dad’s house for Jinny to pack, then they were off. They drove for about an hour and a half, with little conversation. Jinny excitement was turning to impatience when they finally stopped at a small market. Jinny looked around for other people, though there were a few, no one spoke. She followed Teddy into the market and helped him do his shopping. She was trying to gather any information she could about their destination. She asked questions which he quickly quelled. When they finally made their way to the check-out, the store owner gave Jinny a little help giving Teddy the fifth degree.)

Owner: So, what part ya from?

Teddy: San Francisco.

Owner: Where ya headed?

Teddy: I’m, (looking at Jinny who is watching intently) taking my girlfriend away for the weekend. It’s kind of a surprise.

Owner: Sure, I understand. Beautiful place up here. I don’t think you could disappoint her. Where you staying?

Teddy: (trying to be polite, but not wanting to give it away, just yet) Um, a friend of mine owns a place.

Owner: What? No grand hotel? You think a guy like you can rough it?

Teddy: (becoming perturbed) I think we’ll do just fine. How much?

Owner: That’ll be $132.

Teddy: (pays man) Thank you.

Jinny: (once outside, helping Teddy load groceries) Are you sure a guy like you can rough it?

Teddy: (smiling, pulling her close, kissing her) I think we’ll manage. (teasing) Get in the car, we’re almost there.

Jinny: Thank, God.

(They begin up a hill shortly after leaving the market, by now the sun is setting and the skyline is a mixture of reds, yellows, and oranges, so beautiful, Jinny can barely take her eyes off of it. Jinny is paying little attention to where they were going, until Teddy finally pulls into the driveway and parks in front a log cabin. Jinny’s eyes grow wide as her eyes trail the expanse of the cabin and the property it sits on.)

Jinny: (looking to Teddy) (controlled, though she feels anything but controlled) Wow.

Teddy: So, you like it? (not giving her a chance to answer) If you walk about a quarter of a mile that way, through those trees, you can overlook the ocean and see the most beautiful sunsets in the state. Maybe tomorrow we’ll walk out there. Tonight though, (scooting closer, almost into the passenger seat) I have other plans for us.

Jinny: Oh, yeah? (feeling his breath on her neck, then his gentle kiss) Is it in our plans to make out in the car when there’s an entire house there waiting for us?

Teddy: (reluctantly pulls away) (quietly) Let’s go in.

Jinny: (nods)

(The two lovers quickly make their way into the cabin and put away the groceries. They stand in the kitchen, holding each other for several minutes. Teddy decides now is a good time to show Jinny around part of the cabin. He showed her the living room, which had a warm fire crackling to greet them, a blanket spread on the floor and two champagne glasses sparkling in the fire light. He picks up one and hands it to Jinny, then retrieves the other for himself.)

Jinny: (nervous, not sure she has the strength to say no) Um, Teddy...

Teddy: (kisses her) Shhhh... (turns to retrieve the bottle from the ice and turns back around)

Jinny: (smiles) Pure, refreshing, spring water. (laughs) Very good.

(Teddy pours the water and they toast each other and their ‘first’ weekend together. He takes her glass and returns it to the table and then pulls her along after him. He opens a glass door and precedes her through it. Jinny stops, amazed at the sight of what lay on the other side of the door. On the other side of the door was a deck, which extended the length of the house. From one end of the deck steamed a Jacuzzi, that seemed to beckon them.)

Jinny: Wow. You didn’t tell me I needed to bring a bathing suit.

Teddy: (eyes twinkling, teasing) You didn’t. Come on, let’s get in.

Jinny: (smiles) Um, (resists) I don’t know...

Teddy: What? Afraid I’ll see you? I'll get in, I’ll turn my head.

Jinny: (embarrassed) No, that’s okay. Um, all right, let’s go. You, um, you need some help with that shirt?

(Jinny turns to face Teddy and begins to unbutton his shirt. Her hands are shaking slightly as she does. She doesn’t quite understand why she’s timid all the sudden, five minutes ago, she would have gladly shed her clothes for him. Perhaps it had something to do with being outside, in the open. She began to loosen up after a bit and they were soon in the water. They sat watching the stars for some time and talking about their past and future relationship; they talked about their mistakes and their desires. There was suddenly nothing else to talk about, and they sat watching the stars in silence.)

Jinny: (picking her hand up to run through her hair, seeing it) I’m beginning to look like a prune.

Teddy: You’re beautiful. You could never look like a prune.

Jinny: (looks at him, smiles) What time is it?

Teddy: I don’t know. You ready go inside?

Jinny: (nods) (quiet) (still watching him)

Teddy: What are you thinking about?

Jinny: (quiet for a time) How much I’ve missed you.

Teddy: (leans over, their lips meeting)

Jinny: (breaks away after several minutes) (deep breath) And that.

Teddy: (smiling) Let’s go inside.

Jinny: (kissing him again, nods)

(The two get out of the water and wrap in towels to ward off the chill in the night air. Jinny is still shivering once the make their way back inside. Teddy retrieves a robe from his suitcase and wraps her in it. She pulls it around her and sits by the fire, on the blanket, warming herself. Teddy slips on a pair of shorts and joins her by the fire. He pokes at the fire a little and adds a few more sticks of wood, causing sparks to fly. Jinny backs away instinctively and Teddy scoots back to join her, putting his arms around her. She leans her head against his shoulder and yawns. She looks up to find him watching her. She smiles, he returns her smile. She closes the distance between them and their lips meet in a serious of long, deep kisses. Her fatigue is gone as the desire for him explodes inside her in a rush of warmth. Their time spent apart now seems like an eternity. Her kisses become more insistently as Teddy finally take the lead and they make their way from the living room to the upstairs bedroom, with only minor difficulties with the steps.)

(Jinny pauses, finding herself in the most exquisite bedroom she could have imagined. The walls were almost all glass partitioned by stained wood. Jinny was sure that had it been daylight, the view itself would have been breath taking, had Jinny had any breath left to spare. She decided that she would give the view her full attention come morning, but for now she had other things on her agenda. Teddy had loosened the string that held her robe closed and slid it over her shoulders and to the floor, kissing her neckline, tenderly, then more persistently.)

(After they had made love, they held each other for some time, neither speaking. Jinny first felt Teddy’s slow, even breathing, telling her he’d fallen asleep. She found herself crying, for reasons she could not identify. To keep from waking Teddy, she donned his robe once more and got up. She retreated to a chair next to a window, watching the darkness dissapate and give way to the daylight. Teddy awoke, startled not to find Jinny by his side. He didn’t have to look very far, he could see Jinny hunched in the chair, asleep. He could tell by her tear streaked face she’d been crying and wanted to die inside, thinking it had all been a mistake.)

Teddy: (shaking her gently) Jinny. Jinny wake up.

Jinny: What? (sniff) Where am I?

Teddy: You’re with me, remember? What’s wrong?

Jinny: (smiles) Nothing. I just, um, I just realized how much I really did miss you and how sorry I am that I hurt you.

Teddy: Jinny, we’ve talked about this, it’s okay.

Jinny: I know. I know. But I just thought maybe...I don’t know...(kisses him)...I love you, more than anything, I love you.

Teddy: I love you, too.

Jinny: (kisses him again)

Teddy: Want some coffee?

Jinny: (shakes her head)

Teddy: Breakfast?

Jinny: (shakes her head, again)

Teddy: (smiles, raises his eyebrow) You, um, want to go back to bed?

Jinny: (nods)

(Back at the station Monday morning, Jinny walked into the Division, and sat down at her desk. Captain McCafferty walks in greeting everybody, then to her office and sits down. Magda walks over to Jinny’s desk, where Jinny is sitting doing paperwork.)

Magda: So, I didn’t hear much from you this weekend. What did you do?

Jinny: Well, Teddy and I went up to a cabin in the hills for the weekend.

Magda: Oh yeah?

Jinny: Yeah, some place a friend of his owns. Beautiful place, probably beautiful scenery.

Magda: Probably?

Jinny: Yeah, well, great view from the upstairs bedroom. (both laugh)

Magda: (shakes her head, smiling, goes back to her desk to await their assignment)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well there you have it. I hope it wasn't too disappointing.
Don't cry because it's over, rejoice because it was.
