The amazing irony is I heard IRL Carrol O'Connor was quite liberal and most of his views were opposite of Archie Bunker!

Too bad Carrol never got to see the 1st black president. Imagine what Bunker would've said!

But Caroll O'Connor would've loved Obama. He was not like Bunker at all IRL.

On the show he was for sure a bigot. In real life i really don't know.I just know he was a great actor and i liked him a lot.Probably more so as Chief of police on in the heat of the night. But i did think Archie was funny. On in the heat of the night. He worked with black people on a regular basis. So,I don't think he was a bigot in real life.

He would have said, "We may as well hang a sign up saying, Closed, all have gone nuts!" LOL! I can't remember what episode that came from and I may not have it 100% right either, but it was something like that. he said it to Mike during one of their political arguments.

Just think of all the major celebrities who never got to see the 1st black president.

TONS of 'em!

Archie was a bigot.

But he was harmless!!

It wasn't like he was a man of power.. A hatefull KKK magnate who chased blacks out of the neighborhood with violence.. Or a corporate pig who wouldn't allow blacks to work for him outside of being the janitor!!

He was an intellectual bigot.. Probably through family and the time he grew up..i.e.. "segregation" ect..

There is no episode where he tried to inflict personal harm on a minority maliciously ..

He was just a working stiff who was uneducated in his thinking.. A hopeless bigot made to look like a fool for being one..

Everyone who said Archie was a harmless racist or bigot was correct. I can tell you that a person with a racist or predjudice attitude harms no one if like Archie, he never acts on his feelings and never in any way hurts anyone. Racism is at it`s worse when it affects people lives. You have a right to say whatever you damn well want within the boundaries of your own home. Once you leave it, you must be socially tolerant of races that are not the same as yours. But you can say whatever you want in your own house. There are plenty of things that I say in my house I would never say on television.

In fact, there's an episode where the KKK (Kweens Kouncil of Krusaders) tried to recruit him and he indignantly refused to join. They wanted him to put a burning cross on Mike's (his son-in-law) lawn to protest a liberal letter to the editor in a local paper's op-ed column.

If he were truly a hateful character the show would not have lasted..

I feel he evolved as the show went on..

He was just extremely inappropriate..

The only episode I can remember where he seemed like a true hateful racist was where he made friends with a roommate in the hospital. They were seperated by a curtain and became friends.. When the curtain was removed Archie acted like a complete unlikable A-hole.

But outside of that one moment I can't really remember anything hateful.. Just ignorance..

And even when times "such as the petition" he battled his inner self to do the right thing..

Like I said.. A harmless bigot.. Just didn't know better.. But wouldn't hurt another person..

I believe George Jefferson was more hateful than Archie. Look how long it took George to treat the white people nice that came to his apartment. Archie was always respectful to Louise and lionel but can't say the same about george when it came to Tom Willis and Mr. bentley

George was also disrespectful to Jenny Willis and Alan Willis when he would call them zebras.

That's true, and Archie was also rude to Henry Jefferson at times only because they would be rude to him. But Archie was always kind and respectful to Louise and Lionel because they weren't trouble makers. George and Henry sure knew how to push Archie's buttons.

What i wrote was stupid but that was last year i have matured as a person, Archie was not really a racist he was just frustrated about all the bad things he read in the newspapers about African American people doing criminal things, he did not want to come home one morning and find out that all his stuff was stolen by some black guy, archie was just a clueless man when it came to other race of people he just made bad judgements.

I wasn't a big fan of the show "Jeffersons" but I loved the character on AITF...

It seemed on the Jeffersons he was a total uncle tom... He kissed white butt to make deals while I don't think he would have done that on AITF..

If I recall correctly on the Jeffersons it started out with him wanting to shove everything in "Whiteys" face.. But at the same time he would kiss their ass to make a deal..

As the show went on ... Just like Archie.. I believe he mellowed out...

Plus on AITF he didn't seem to be the jive turkey he played on the Jeffersons...

BTW I loved Uncle Henry.. I thought he was a great antagonist.. I thought he would have been fun had he been on the Jeffersons.. which is probably another reason I never really got to involved in that show..

He wasn't the Jive Turkey on AITF because that wasn't his show and he wasn't only a supporting character.

He didn't have that WALK of his on AITF either

Archie was largely a product of his times. He came along in an era where non whites were laregly treated as second class citizens. He was just stuck in an old view of America.

Yeah Archie would always talk crap about things he just diden't understand about other race of people he was just a confused person, thats what made this show realistic everybody can relate to his character he's funny and down to earth.

A major part of Norman Lear's 70's sitcom wizardry was his ability to have the various segments of American society unite in poking fun at each other without necessarily being biggoted or offensive in any major way.I for one am three quarters Italian and always found great pleasure in Bunkers jabs at "Daygos".My mother is even full blooded Sicilian and I howled when he said that Sicilians are known mainly for two things...spaghetti and revenge! While I'm sure the producers probably received more than their fair share of phone and letter complaints from minority orgaizations,I found it all to be a highly contagious, albeit case sensitive brand of humor.

Yeah Archie was realistic people always called him a bigot for speaking his mind atleast he had the guts to express his feeling about race to other people without them thinking he was racist he is a role model to lots of fans.
