View Full Version : Times when Lisa slipped up!!
ABlairican Pie 01-27-2002, 09:42 PM As we all know, Lisa Whelchel has insisted she would never have appeared on an episode where she would be called to compromise her beliefs (i.e., where she or one of the girls would depict losing their virginity). So have there been any episodes where she DID do something questionable?? I can think of a few:
1. First episode--she holds a lit cigarette
2. Episode in first season where she and her friends play with a Ouija board
3. First season--how about them shorts!!
4. First season episode where she has friends who hold private dope-smoking parties (but she DOESN'T inhale)
5. She confesses to Mrs. Garrett she is a "tease"
6. Blair and that one guy in the van on Make-out Mountain
7. Blair, Natalie and Jo go off drinking French wine and beer
8. When Natalie looks for a controversial story to write, Blair suggests, "VD?" Then comes back--"Valentine's Day!!"
9. Blair, Jo, and Mrs. Garrett go to a male strip club--and she sees Cliff
10. All the times the girls went out and ordered alcoholic beverages (i.e., Blair's white wine spritzer)
11. Blair commenting on a Cupid doll being "anatomically correct"
12. At the taco restaurant, Natalie asks Blair a pre-hire question,
"How long has it been since your last sexual experience?" Blair is suprised that the question is on the application--but Natalie is just playing a joke.
13. Same episode--the elderly lady customer calls Blair a "chippie"
Anyone got any more?

In "Best Sister" Blair was acting like she didnt believe in God.
Kay Scarpetta 01-27-2002, 10:13 PM Um... In "Come Back to the Truckstop" Blair or aka "The Woman in Red" smokes... um..
*trys not to laugh* Tad...*cracks up*
ABlairican Pie 01-27-2002, 11:05 PM Oh yeah... Smoking...;)
ABlairican Pie 01-27-2002, 11:12 PM Thanx StrudelBone, that was a good point. She not only said she didn't believe in God, but said so in not very complimentary ways.
Plus she was reading "The Exorcist". (I think Lisa says in her latest book that her parents' divorce probably had some bearing on her faith--or lack of--in God at the time.)
BTW, about smoking, didn't the woman in red seem to have a BIG habit??:D
Warm & Fuzzy 01-27-2002, 11:27 PM LOL! There's always 7 Little Indians...killing is bad. ;)
Panda Bear 01-28-2002, 12:33 AM Guys, if you read pgs. 35-37, in "The Facts of Life and Other Lessons My Father Taught Me" Lisa explains those slip ups. She actually did take a stand on the episode where she and that guy are making out, orignally it was meant to be a lot more than making out.

ThomasE 01-28-2002, 08:39 AM Hey uh let's not take this too far now. Lisa was doing a job. She was acting. "Best Sister" and other episodes that were controverisal she was just doing a job. I didn't see anything wrong. Lisa obviously knows how far to go with something and I'm sure that God will let her know which direction to take.

I never said she was doing anything wrong. I was just pointing out something she had to act which I'm sure must have been hard for her.
ThomasE 01-28-2002, 03:36 PM Don't sweat it, Tad.
BTW I have not forgotten about your movie.
vienna waits 01-28-2002, 05:31 PM Making out is against Lisa's religous beliefs???

Yeah, that episode always makes me think. I actually think it could be argued both ways. Blair does denounce God, but in the end she also accepts the fact He is always there. I think Lisa could argue she was making a point in that episode...
I dunno?

ABlairican Pie 01-28-2002, 10:13 PM Okay, of course I'm being facetious with the times that Lisa
"slipped up." It wasn't necessarily about things her character would do that she wouldn't do herself, but things that would actually interpreted as morally questionable, like ordering a drink
or make out in a van, etc. Of course I believe that in the first season there were a lot of things she could "get away with", being sort of new to television, but further into the 80's, she realized she had a big following among Christians, and therefore
she may have felt inclined to act more responsibly. Anyone got any more slip-ups??!!:D
 TAD who are you to judge when someone a SLIPPED UP the fol was a t.v show. people make it so hard for christian to live in this in world . Christian slippedup all the time just like non christian but when a christian slipped up everybody see it when a non christian slipped up its ok. but i know God still love me when is slipped up and everyone when they slipped up. I really dont think this post was meant to be taken so seriously.
ABlairican Pie 01-28-2002, 11:32 PM To craz, I'm not judging Lisa! I'm just having fun with little "inconsistencies" with what she said about her role on the show and pointing out what she did--all for fun!! In other words, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of Blair's hair dryer!!
FerGawshSakes, I'd like to see some of YOU "funny-ha-ha" people write for FOL!!

Craz, I will agree with you in one area. Some non christians will make it hard for christians. It's just true. I understand where you are coming from. Plus I don't think Tad is trying point fingers(I hope not, LOL) Tad, also try to understand where we are coming from as well. If you say you are not trying to point fingers, heck I believe you.
ABlairican Pie 01-29-2002, 07:59 PM Of course I'm not pointing fingers!! I just made this point because for a long time I wondered if there MIGHT have been things on the show that were morally or ethically questionable for Lisa that she appeared on anyway (i.e. buying drinks in a bar, etc.). It seemed "inconsistent" that she would focus on one activity (premarital sex) that she would not endorse, but not on the others. I'm just raising questions about what Christians feel comfortable with portraying. I HARDLY would want to criticize Lisa for anything!!:D
Kay Scarpetta 01-29-2002, 08:26 PM Um... nevermind! lol
ABlairican Pie 01-29-2002, 10:19 PM I think the only time I'd point fingers is if a Christian WERE harsh and judgemental. I kinda like it when a person like Lisa DOES fall and make mistakes (as you will find in her journal) because it makes me feel less alone in being human. Perfectionism is HIGHLY overrated.
So who do you think is/was a better lead singer for AC/DC, Bon Scott or Brian Johnson? Let's take a poll.

Technically it's not wrong to drink Alcohol (wine is Gods idea) but it is wrong to get drunk. I just thought you guys should know.:)

Lisa was acting out what Blair Warner does in the script written. It's a demonstation.
ABlairican Pie 01-30-2002, 08:28 PM I am aware that it was something called for by the script. She didn't act it out of her own accord. But to do it was essentially to agree to it, more or less. But I think that the real question I have is: If she was so concerned about what NOT to convey on the show, did she ever consider what she WAS to convey? She agreed not to do episodes where the girls would lose their virginity or take drugs, etc. BUT-- has she ever considered OTHER moral points the show was trying to make? I.e., helping out her father when he was indicted for insider trading, learning a lesson
from the man in the elevator about remembering her family, etc.
I guess my concern is that her Christianity separated her from the concerns from her art, one doesn't have to think about it if one is a born-again Spirit-filled Christian like me, etc., because this is all comedy that no one has to take seriously, etc. etc. Is
morality only a "negation of immorality"? (To use a Biblical example, think of Christ's words to the rich young ruler.)
