He never thought so, because his role was smaller than everybody else's. What do you think?

Really? I thought he just never won one. He wasn't even nominated for the Love Boat either?

Well, it is sad because he was great in that role.

No, he wasn't a leading man type, but his understated role was still significant and added a lot to the show.

Sometimes I think the fact that an acting job seems effortless makes it seem less worthy in some ways; i.e. 'what he was doing wasn't that hard so why nominate him?'. In reality, these types of roles are often harder to play because you have to do a lot more with much less in the script.

A real pity, for sure.

Excellent post, I think he shined most as Murray rather than the lead as Captain Stubing on the Love Boat. His little one liners especially towards Ted, got a lot of laughs from the audience.

Gavin at least deserved to be nominated for MTM, but got overshadowed by Ed Asner and Ted Knight.

^ Yeah, while I liked him as Stubing he wasn't as memorable as Murray, even though he had the lead role in Love Boat. LB's comedy was much more corny than MTM's; not to say I didn't enjoy it because I did, but you really can't compare the two shows in terms of quality.

I always thought Murray had a great chemistry with Sue Ann, too...some of their jibes were just brutal! :)

Murray was on in every episode, unlike Phyllis (which won Cloris two (?) Emmys). Gavin definitely had a lot of screen time, at least when the action took place in the newsroom.

Interesting, do you guys think he was a victim of TMTMS overall success?

Personally, I think that McLeod ultimately benefited a lot from TMTMS. If not for that, he'd have likely never gotten the Love Boat gig...and that coupled with TMTMS probably ensured he'd never really have to work again. I mean, he really wasn't in much else besides those two shows. Never had another series, and his movie and TV career was relegated to guest starring roles.

^ Prior to TMTMS, Gavin had a recurring role on McHale's Navy, but he ended up having the biggest and longest-running show of all the TMTMS regulars when all was said and done. I can't even imagine anyone else as Captain Stubing. :D

OK, thanks...didn't realize that about McHale's Navy. (as an aside, I have never watched a single episode of that show...it was never syndicated in my area!)

Same here...but I read about it in Gavin's book. Ernest Borgnine was the star of that program.

It's on Antenna TV Weekday afternoons. He does look quite young in it.

Also being a Clint Eastwood fan, he had a role in the 1970 film Kelly's Heroes as Donald Sutherland's sidekick. They were funny together.

In the article I linked up at the top, Gavin said he was miserable doing Mchale's Navy.

Has anyone ever seen him in anything before he started going bald? I never have. He must really have started young!

Ah that's too bad. He didn't have a big role in it so I can see why he'd be miserable. I wonder what tension on the set he was talking about?

I know he played second or even 3rd banana to the rest of the cast of McHale's Navy, but he was an actor getting PAID! You would think that would have satisfied him somewhat.

My dad was in his late teens when he began losing his hair, so it's possible that Gavin started going bald early in life as well. But my dad is still rockin' his Kojak look. Never went for a rug or hair implants or any of that.

I just watched an episode of The Big Valley. He was on it. He talked in a strange voice but you could tell that was him.

It's currently on AntennaTV --

which broadcasts in most parts of the country:

As for Gavin McCleod, I personally don't think he deserved an nomination. He was basically playing himself on the show and the character tended towards bland. He was a decent enough actor, but not, IMO, the caliber that could be lead actor on a series. The Love Boat was a unique sort of show in that it had no real star; it was really about the guest stars. The regular cast members were there just for continuity, the glue to hold it all together. He was lucky a show like that came along when it did.

Why is that? Do you think if not for The Love Boat, he wouldn't have worked in Hollywood again? Just curious?

I'm not saying he would never have worked again, I'm just saying The Love Boat was a lucky break for him to get a long-term steady job. The Love Boat didn't demand very much from him. He was a familiar face that the public was comfortable with, and that's pretty much all the role required. Had that show not come along, perhaps he would have found supporting roles here and there, but I can't see him ever headlining a series like Ted, Betty and Ed did. Conversely, I can't see Ted, Betty, Ed or Mary ever taking a role on a show like The Love Boat because they would have desired something much more artistically challenging.
