View Full Version : 20 Years Ago Today: Night Court Adjourned
Brian Damage 05-31-2012, 11:42 PM May 31st, 1992 - The final episode of "Night Court" aired on NBC
Harry contemplates a variety of job offers, Dan anticipates life on easy street with a wealthy bride, Bull deals with some really out-of-town visitors, and Christine contemplates the agony of defeat.
OH Nuts! 06-01-2012, 08:03 AM Well, IMO, there's no hung verdict; it was a fun entertaining show and Harry's Mel Torme fetish was at hoot.
Why wasn't it cancelled two years earlier? This show got more horrible as it went along.
hawkeye123 06-02-2012, 07:17 PM I liked Night court.Very funny show.With lots of good charectors.

I agree -- it was a good show that ran out of steam and continued on past its' expiration date, creatively speaking.
McFly121 09-07-2012, 03:03 AM This was about the time NBC was in serious panic mode. Around Spring '91, NC had announced they were done. Then Cosby and Cheers were talking about final seasons, and rumors were swirling about Johnny Carson. So in desperation mode, they made an offer to the producers to bring it back for one more year. The undoing of finale set-ups lead to a lot of jumbled characters and and directionless scripts.
Then they were offered a season 10 in syndication but finally said enough was enough.

I'm glad they did call it a day then, I'm watching Season 9 on TV right now, and while it's still OK, it's nowhere near as good as Seasons 3-6. They should have stopped after Season 7 or 8, but I have yet to see the finale at the time of typing.
McFly121 02-05-2013, 01:15 PM Prepare yourself, Hauser. You'll be throwing a gavel at the tv by the time you reach the finale.

Ohhh-kay, will post here again when I do watch the finale.
Dunkin Donuts 02-10-2013, 10:32 AM I do remember really not liking the finale of the series. So much so, I never watched the finale again.

Well, I just watched the finale today, and while I enjoyed parts of it, such as Christine's election to Congress and Harry's decision to stay at the court, other parts I found absurd, such as Bull's journey to Jupiter, along with other bits of unwrapped storylines.
Overall, not as bad as you made it out to be, but Night Court's finale certainly wasn't of the calibre of the Cheers finale.

I'm know reminded of the thread that I started about the biggest mess-ups/mistakes in NBC history (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=317007) (I don't know or remember if the stuff about Night Court had been mentioned).

king of comedy 02-01-2014, 11:53 AM I wished they had given Bull a better send off. Why was he abducted by aliens?
Encore Classic aired the second part of the series finale and now that I've had a chance like you to "relive it", I do get a sense of why most fans didn't like it. It seems like Christine was the only character who really got some sense of "closure". The rest was just a bunch of half-baked ideas (such as Harry's storyline), none of which were remotely funny. It's as if the writers and producers totally and completely didn't give a crap anymore.
I don't at all understand the point of Dan's storyline, which was about his "nightmare" (w/ "Judge Roz"and Christine defending him) involving all of his past girlfriends/flings. Was it suppose to teach Dan once and for all that he has to be more "respectful" towards women? The producers had done so much to ruin Dan's character over final two seasons, that it seems rather "fitting" that the final shot of him is of Dan telling Harry that is going to follow Christine (even though it wasn't built up that way).
And I find it funny that Bull decides to go off to "Jupiter" w/ those to elderly "aliens", while conveniently forgetting his new wife. It's as if, they no longer knew what to do w/ his character so they had to absurdly pull something out of their rears that made absolutely no logical sense (even for a show like Night Court).
king of comedy 08-29-2014, 06:21 AM Bull taking off like that and forgetting his wife? Leaving her all alone? Worst finale ever.
'80sSitcoms 08-29-2014, 03:34 PM Omg...so that really was the series finale. I saw it last night and had a sense it was and looked up the episode guide on Wikipedia, and sure enough that was the series finale. It was terrible. I don't know so many people trash Seinfeld's good series finale when Night Court's was so abominable. Dan's character in multiple unfocused direction? Harry staying in his job? (ooo, how exciting [not] ), Bull going to Jupiter?? WTF??
UGH. Definitely one of the worst series finales ever.
u2rules 04-12-2015, 02:31 PM Worst series finale ever.
What was up with Christine and Harry? It sure took them long enough to become a couple. They only worked together, what 8 years? And all of that sexual tension between them. The writers missed a great opportunity to make them a couple and maybe even write in a baby.
That storyline with Dan was ********. Was that supposed to teach him a lesson?
Poor Roz got no closure at all and Harry staying in that hellhole? I thought he and Christine we're going to be a couple.
I'm sorry, all in all in was a terrible finale. I could never stand Christine. She seemed too prissy. I really don't care about her. I would've liked to have seen all the loose ends tied up. Pretty disappointing.
jessm78 04-14-2015, 01:30 PM I agree, u2rules. Did you know that season 8 was originally going to be the last season, and at the end they were going to have Harry and Christine get married? They were going to wrap it all up and then the network gave them another season and they had to abandon that. It was a shame. I thought it was a bit weird too how they had Harry all awkward around Christine in the first episode of season 9. It was like they had to quickly dial back all the feelings & tension and make them just friends again.
I'm guessing that's what it was supposed to be. But it also made him realize he had feelings for Christine, the way she defended him in that dream (which I thought was weird, it seemed totally out of left field... and the way he suddenly told Harry he was following her to Washington DC at the end).
Believe me, I totally agree with you. I don't know what they were thinking when they wrote that finale. And Bull going off to Jupiter... he was married to Wanda at that point, whatever happened to her? She apparently didn't go with him so did someone have to tell her that Bull just suddenly disappeared with no rhyme or reason? Really odd.
TVQuack 02-17-2016, 10:45 AM Has anyone picked up the entire series on DVD? Seasons 4-9 are MOD, so a bit pricer, which is a shame....I'd love to pull the trigger on all of them at some point.

In addition, NBC was also undergoing regime change as well, as Warren Littlefield was replacing Brandon Tartikoff as president of NBC Entertainment.
Night Court: 10 Storylines That Were Left Unresolved When The Series Ended (https://screenrant.com/night-court-storylines-unresolved-series-ended/)
Night Court was 80s sitcom about a courtroom. While the show had nine seasons (https://screenrant.com/night-court-ranking-season-worst-best/), it got cancelled leaving many story lines to not be resolved.
jets4life 09-14-2023, 09:11 PM In the final two seasons, the show became unwatchable. It just fell off a cliff in 1990, after reaching it's peak around 1988. It really should have ended in 1990.

How is a long-running (nine-season) show going to have an official series finale and STILL (intentionally or not) leave some storylines unresolved (especially some that are just starting up in its last year)? The last thing I want to do when writing a show's final season is create completely new storylines.
