Captain Stubin on "The Love Boat"? It seems I read once a long time ago he was considered for the Gavin McLeod role, but Van Patten backed out. I know he was on several episodes, but was curious.

Not the captain, but the ship's doctor. Dick Van Patten actually did appear in the first "Love Boat" pilot movie as the doctor (but not Dr. Bricker).
