View Full Version : Could these be the "TOP 5" reasons why Maude doesn't do well in syndication?
TVFactFan 03-26-2012, 08:35 PM I was having this discussion on another TV board and this is what I came up with from all the responses.
5. Lot of Dark Humor
4. Too Preachy
3. Too much yelling
2. Bea Aruthur was more popular as Dorothy on Golden Girls
1. The show was too TOPICAL
What do you think?
These were the other reasons people came up with below.
1. The Maude character was unlikable
2. The show didn't have a strong supporting cast
3. There was always a continuous rant about the same topic..."Feminism"
4. Not many people know a person like Maude
Brian Damage 03-26-2012, 09:17 PM If those are the reasons Sol, why did Archie Bunker succeed where Maude failed?
TVFactFan 03-26-2012, 09:25 PM If those are the reasons Sol, why did Archie Bunker succeed where Maude failed?
1. More of a family show
2. Better supporting cast
3. AITF still addresses the issues we have in 2012
4. All the characters on AITF stood for something
5. AITF is funnier because it's politically incorrect
This is not me, it's from the discussion I started on another board LOL
Brian Damage 03-26-2012, 09:51 PM I'll agree on most of those points, the characters on 'All in the Family' were more memorable.

Well Carol was barley seen on Maude-lol So we definitely would remember her

Adrienne Barbeau was SPICY! LOL

Oh Yes-lol
But we can expect the show to be gone forever now because no one is going to watch the show ONCE a week at 2am.
Isn't easier for Antenna TV to cancel it-LOL

You are probably right, but like I said, I hope not. Classic shows need to be shown one way or another.
Mr. Television 03-26-2012, 10:32 PM I hope eventially it will be back in the regular rotation. I have been impressed with the way Antenna TV has handled the show until now.

I just don't understand why they didn't make it earlier like 8pm instead of decreasing it and having it air at 2am once a week.
Three's Company may fail in that slot now lol

Yeah they did show two cycles so the opportunity was there for all of us to record it and watch the show whenever we wanted until the DVD came out
WalterTheDrinker 03-26-2012, 11:40 PM I enjoy watching Maude *because* it's so dated. I was born in the middle of its run, and it just feels so ancient to me.
That said, I really only like the earlier seasons, and I can't really stomach any episodes with that awful Mrs. Naugatuck character.
And, obviously, Walter is my favorite character...especially when he's getting sloshed.
At least season one is on DVD, and I can buy it.

I think the entire series is complete on youtube

You could spin off Carol with the hot tub from The Ropers. LOL
Why do you think "All in the Family" does well in syndication but it's spinoff "Maude" doesn't? (television, cast) (http://www.city-data.com/forum/tv/1533594-why-do-you-think-all-family.html)
upperco 01-09-2015, 12:06 PM The simple reasons are that ALL IN THE FAMILY was funnier, had better writing, and featured a stronger cast.
As for the characters of Archie vs. Maude, I think ALL IN THE FAMILY has remained more popular than MAUDE because Archie's extremist beliefs were constantly derided and existed as the series' principal source of comedy. Everything that made him unlikable was mocked and shown to be from ignorance; thus, he was made likable.
Maude's extremist beliefs, though they got her into comedic predicaments, could not be truly mocked by the series. Not only did most of the creative team personally identify more with the character, but the progressive mood of the time would not allow for derision of the kind afforded Archie. Sure, she became the butt of jokes, but she couldn't be shown as ignorant or outdated. And because she was equally extreme, just as obnoxious, and NOT shown as ignorant, she was a less lovable character.
That said, Arthur is a superb actress and comedienne, and her talents, coupled with the show's topicality, made it exciting in its first run.

Agree 100% with everything you said.
Would especially stress the impact that the rest of the cast had on each show's legacy too - both had terrific comedic actors in supporting roles but All in the Family had probably the most all-around talented core cast in TV history.
I don't think though that it's accurate that Maude doesn't do well in syndication though. Most shows would look mediocre compared to AITF. It's been on Antenna TV for years now (while other shows have been dropped completely at times) and now thankfully Shout Factory is releasing the entire series so clearly there is lingering interest in the show.
