In "Family Scrapbook" we learn through reminiscing clips that Beaver got his nickname because when Wally tried to say 'Beaver" when he started talking it came out, "Tweeter." The family thought "Beaver" was a more appropriate name.
Jerry has said that he thought the reasoning given on the show for how he got his nickname was "Lame." He was really hoping that the writers could come up with something better, and I agree with him 100% The cast got the script and on the read through, Jerry thought after six years, they could have been more creative with how he got the name, 'Beaver." He likely mentioned this at the time of filming. My view is that because the series was ending the writers did not, or could not, come up with a better idea for how Beaver's name originated.
The idea for the SHOW was to create a family oriented show based on the real-life experiences that the producers had as children, or through the eyes of their own kids. Every episode was drawn for at least one true life experience. They also wanted a patriarch with a strong moral code and Hugh's theology background blended perfectly!
The nuclear family seen through the eyes of a child was very important to Mr. Connelly and Mr. Mosher. Bob Mosher kept a remembrance journal of people who had an influence on his life throughout his childhood through adult years, and when he was in the service, he befriended a "G.I" who was nicknamed "Beaver!" This guy was funny, and had a sense of gullibility, so Joe and Bob thought, lets do a show through a child's eyes where a kid gets into amusing and sometimes mischievous situations with nurturing parents.
Bob Mosher remembered his "Beaver" friend from the service, and a show classic was born!
