OK kids, despite some fairly recent promises from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, we have nothing on the DVD release of Seasons 5 and 6 of The Bob Newhart Show but a sham preorder on Amazon.com, and it's also going on six years since the release of Season 4.
So, as promised, here are the email addresses of the head honchos, possibly to be followed by phone numbers down the line.
Please take the time to write an email, especially to the first person on the list. Be nice, but try to let your passion for this great show come through. And to be honest, it wouldn't hurt to spell things correctly, either. Get your friends to help. And follow up, too! Good luck, and let the campaign begin!

Update:

So I recently got an email from a guy at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment asking me to take down the email address list, which tells me the head honcho has gotten some emails and is none too happy about it.

Yet I'm getting the sense that the emails are mostly coming from people who preordered on Amazon.com whom I was able to contact personally. How are we doing on Sitcoms Online...are you kids sending emails?

I opted NOT to take down the list of people to contact, since it's the only leverage I have right now. To be honest, I was always kind of bluffing with the bigwigs, not knowing how many people would write emails, yet while I don't think they've been deluged, maybe they are getting a good steady stream, which is not a bad thing either. So please send, and maybe re-send down the line.

The studio, of course, now could easily just tell all of us to pound sand because of the emails. But after such a long delay, and then this latest "preorder" on Amazon that was anything but, I thought it was time for action. I mean, I personally ended up buying Seasons 5 and 6 bootleg, but at this point it's the principle of the thing.

My thought is let's give the emailing our best shot and see where we stand. If there's no action and yet people are still into it, down the line I have phone numbers, and I haven't even tapped Twitter and Facebook yet.

And anybody with any thoughts or ideas, let's hear it!

Lisa_Eva

Haha! I can't say I'm surprised that they've taken this kind of action. I would be sincerely interested to know why it is that they won't release 5 and 6, really truly. Is it money? Or is it a legal thing? Does it have something to do with Suzanne's death? (I've often noticed that many series stop being released on DVD after the death of a main star ex: Green Acres stopped being released after Eddie Albert's 2005 death)....now that the aspiring entertainment lawyer in me has had the floor, I'll move on to the less legal question...how and where did you get a bootleg copy? I'm actually taping 5 and 6 as they play on Hallmark. Not exactly the most convienent thing, ex: I can't take screen shots or watch them on the computer...but it is cheap and legal! Anybody else doing this?

So does this mean I won't ever get to see the opening credits for season 5 and 6 since

1. Hallmark doesn't show them

2. The DVD's has not been released

3. Me-TV doesn't air season 5 and 6

I recorded Season 5 from Me-TV and Season six from Hallmark.

Yes Metv shows season 5 just not season 6.

I had heard a a few months back that the reason Me-TV doesnt air Season 6 was because the only copies available were under 21 minutes and some of them didnt have credits.

They most likely do have them in some capacity but Fox probably doesn't want to invest time and money into locating them. Given their shoddy treatment for the series and the fact ownership of the show changed hands several times, it wouldn't totally shock me if they really are gone for good. It's happened before.

That's a shame, and you're probably correct. It took them forever to release all the seasons of The Mary Moore Show, and it was only after a lot of campaigning from fans and, I guess, they realized the poor initial sales of S1 were due to their poor promotion of the product and that there actually was potential to make some money off the other seasons, which is the only thing they care about. But they invested very little in them. Other companies, like CBS with all its Lucy DVD releases, have gone to great lengths to restore image quality and provide bonus material. Fox has done none of this. Fox apparently will only invest in products it thinks it will make them megabucks. With this attitude, it would be nice if they would just turn over their MTM Productions library to someone who might actually care, like MPI or Shout! Factory, or sell it off before it's too late. But I guess they don't even want to take the time to do that, and meanwhile they just let all those treasures continue to deteriorate and disappear.

I would totally agree with this statement. I already had s1 and had it since it came out but when I started watching it again I went out and bought some of the others. I'm noticing I'm not alone in this because the Barnes and Noble by my house sells out of it all the time, at least as far as I've noticed.

Amen to all of that. Shout or MPI seem like ideal candidates for distribution. They have made the smaller home video market profitable and rewarding for everyone involved. Part of me doesn't want to totally blame Fox considering the hard facts - they run a larger operation with larger operating costs and therefor MUST move a larger amount of units. However it's been 6 friggin' years now and virtually no excuse why they haven't sold the rights to someone who can indeed distribute it without losing money.

By this point nobody is expecting the treatment that CBS/Paramount gave Lucy. I think we'd settle for any type of official release be it a barebones DVD, Netflix streaming, Amazon Prime, Hulu, YouTube, UltraViolet, Ultrasound, Hypersonic Death Ray, whatever the hell they can think of - just get us the shows.

PGood97041

My biggest beef with the 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment honchos isn't even actually that they haven't released the final two seasons...I finally broke down and went bootleg, so I'm all set.

It's that when I first contacted them, I asked them specifically, look, if it's because you think you'll lose money, or you won't make enough money, or you owe rights fees to the actors if you release Seasons 5 and 6, or anything else you can think of, JUST TELL ME! If it's a legit reason, I won't keep bugging you.

Instead, I got "Oh, that's a good franchise, we'll look into releasing them" and a sham Amazon.com preorder, and "we're having to deal with musical clearance issues", which nobody can figure out and might not even be legit. But again, even if it IS musical clearance issues, just give us a heads-up about how it doesn't makes sense for you to release them. Don't keep stringing us along.

So now we're emailing them, they'll probably withstand the first onslaught (although there are still phone numbers, twitter, and facebook) and then tell us to take a hike. And they won't farm the final two seasons out to another company.

But at this point it was the principle of the thing. Yes, it takes time to put out any series, but it's been six years! And you can't tell me this great series doesn't deserve to be completely out in the public domain!

One prime example why they need to release season 5 and 6

"because back when the show's previous season was released I wasn't a fan. So the show will GAIN NEW FANS now that it;s on two different channels. Also if the DVD release is promoted on the channels the show is airing on how can it not have good sales?"

I have seen very little advertising on TV for DVD sets of archived TV shows. I recall seeing the Seinfeld DVD sets advertised on TBS several years back. And I remember the Band of Brothers DVD set being advertised on The History Channel when they were re-airing the series. Those are hugely successful DVD releases. Possibly the networks think owning the DVDs would discourage viewers from watching their channel (and it probably would).

Also, yes I agree this show probably has more fans now than it did back when seasons 1-4 were released during which it was nowhere to be found in syndication. However, it's probably a modest amount of growth and still not enough to justify a large scale release.

Yet another sitcom-on-DVD tragedy is his other equally fantastic 80s show Newhart. They have only released the first season which most people agree is a little sub par including Bob himself. The seasons that everyone knows and loves aren't out. One of the most memorable finales in TV history isn't even available on DVD...

Also, I just remembered that last summer there was lots of speculation on the Shout Factory forums and Home Theater Forum about Fox being very difficult to deal with in show licensing. There was pretty strong evidence suggesting the relationship with Shout and Fox has really soured. Some sources were claiming that Fox puts astronomical price tags on their back catalog. It sure is curious that Shout, well known for releasing WHOLE series of smaller-market shows, never got the rights to finish Rhoda and have since acquired no more Fox shows. On top of that, Fox gave them such terrible prints for S1 of Rhoda but magically came up with pristine uncut prints for the rest of the licensed seasons after Shout's first release received negative attention. So I guess Shout Factory finishing this is out of the question.

It seems like what we're left with is a catch 22. The releases of both Bob's shows obviously didn't sell millions like Seinfeld and The Simpsons. Fox is apparently only interested in self-releasing their archive if it makes them a buttload. And they will only sell the rights for a buttload that no small distributor can afford. Basically the hold-up is due to one reason: sheer greed on Fox's part. Unfortunately for us MTM's entire catalog ended up with a flakey outfit instead of a legit one willing to commit to releasing a whole series.

If either of these do really come out on DVD, what special features would you like to see? Among other things, I hope they don't forget some kind of Suzanne tribute or something like it...I hate DVD's where they forget a primary actor who has died. Including something about her would be especially fitting, giving that she did participate in all the other DVD collections (commentaries).

Wow! Stay away from a thread for a while and all heck breaks loose!

If that is, indeed, THE James Finn, his post actually sounds kind of promising. I had no idea about Home Theater Forum when I started this thread, but it looks like they were on kind of the same track we were. And my guess is that a fair amount of the people on Amazon got in touch with him once I posted the email addresses.

As I said before, I bought Seasons 5 and 6 bootleg, and am just now getting the time to watch them. Yet I'd still buy factory produced 5 and 6 as a reward for 20th CFHE putting the seasons out. And, yes, I know all about downloads and mp3s and whatever other technology is out there, but I'm in the "I want something physical to touch" camp, and I also want something that plays on my TV and not just my computer.

Anyway, having the whole series now, I had kind of put this whole fight on hold, but just recently I was thinking of taking to Facebook and Twitter to push it again. But with Mr. Finn's recent posting, I think I'll wait and see.

Who knows...maybe our patience finally will be rewarded! I guarantee MY frown will turn upside down if that happens, just like it did with The Mary Tyler Moore Show DVDs!

You would think something would be going on with TBNHS, since there going ahead with Newhart Season 2.

Why doesn't FOX just release them or lease the show to Shout!

I feel your anger but I have a feeling we'll see season 5 in 2014 ....and maybe even season 6, too! Just call me optimistic.

Here is the link to contact the Shout! Factory website (hope it translates):

http://www.shoutfactory.com/node/987

One of the pulldowns is titled: Suggest a title for Shout! Factory to release.

We should all ask about Seasons 5 and 6 of The Bob Newhart Show!

Maybe they got taken off Amazon cause Shout Factory is preparing to release them? They did announce season 2 of Newhart so anything is possible.

It can only mean that since both seasons at one point was available foe pre-order on amazon

If...and it's still a big 'if'...Shout Factory does manage to wrangle any episodes of TBNS from the clutches of Fox's hands then I certainly hope they receive new transfers. As time goes by, Fox's releases of the first four seasons just look worse and worse. It's obvious they used very old masters and it looks and sounds like crap by modern TV standards.

I almost wish Shout would simply start over with season 1, getting proper masters and giving us episodes with acceptable picture quality. But knowing Fox, even if they finally surrender the rights of the last 2 seasons to Shout, they will hand over the same crappy masters much like they did for the 1st season of Rhoda. But beggars can't be choosers and at this point I'm sure any of us would gladly take it however we can get it.

It's fantastic to see Newhart finally get moving again. Between that and the Amazon presales finally being put out of their misery, it appears a sea change is on the horizon.

I hope some of this optimism is justified, but I can't say I totally see it.

What difference does it make if S 5 and 6 were available to be preordered on Amazon? That doesn't necessarily mean that they were made/ready to roll.

And there are still all the royalties/payoffs to the cast issues that might have held up 20thCFHE from releasing them.

Plus, let's face it, the DVD is going the way of the dodo bird, anyway.

Also, I'm more a content guy than a picture quality guy, but having any type of a studio release would be better than what I've got. The bootlegs I have are OK, but this would be a step up.

This is from the "SitcomsOnline Digest" article that was posted today:

We hinted several weeks ago that more "surprises" from the Fox library were in the works at Shout! Factory, but we weren't prepared to let the cat out of the bag just yet. Now, it appears that Hill Street Blues - The Complete Series (one of the series we heard rumors regarding) IS on the way! We're still awaiting confirmation on the continuation at least one other Fox series (a classic '70s sitcom... hopefully this is a huge hint) that is believed to also be in the works from Shout!, and we'll let you know more when we have something more solid.

I put in bold what I was trying to point out. I think this is talking about TBNS! I could be wrong but I think I'm right! Another classic 70's sitcom they could be talking about is "WKRP", but I still think it's going to be seasons 5 & 6 of TBNS.

I definitely don't think it's no damm WKRP because that show is not considered a 70's classic sitcom. It's definitely TBNS

That would be awesome if they released a box set of TBNS, and with more participation from Bob Newhart. They also should include the reunion show!

My feelings are that this can be either TBNS or Maude (since Shout released the remaining seasons of All in the Family and the big series box set). However, with Shout releasing season 2 of Newhart I am leaning towards the remaining seasons of TBNS followed by a series release box afterwards. Just my opinion ...

Maude is owned by Sony. We're talking about FOX titles, so I can't think of anything other than TBNS.

Yes, but we're talking about the news of Shout! picking up some FOX titles.
