March 8th, 1974 - The last episode "The Brady Bunch" aired

"The Hair-Brained Scheme"

Bobby is convinced he can get rich by selling Neat & Natural Hair Tonic. Bobby sells Greg a container which turns Greg's hair bright orange on the eve of his high school commencement. Greg is forced to go to the beauty parlor and dye his hair back before going to graduation.

Note: Robert Reed does not appear in this episode, due to dispute over the story involving the non-FDA approved bottle of hair tonic, which he thought was inane slapstick. After Reed wrote a large memo to the staff and Paramount, Sherwood Schwartz wrote him out of the episode.

Kind of, he was trying to blackmail Schwartz into changing the plot. It backfired on him.

Not only was this ep sans Patriarch but it also had some of the most ironic final words on any TV program.
"Me! Cousin Oliver!"

Gilligan's Island (Schwartz's other show) never had a final episode either. He must not have liked saying goodbye.

All because of a old junkman-lol

BTW: This episode scared me when I first watched it has a child. It had something to do with the way Greg was chasing bobby around with that strange color hair ll

I liked this ep too! And when Greg wore the ski cap to the beauty salon, that was funny too! And the rabbits turning orange (hopefully it really didn't hurt the bunnies) !!

It was a little sad that it had to be the last ep that Robert Reed didn't participate in. Esp. when it was supposed to be his oldest sons graduation and Mike had to miss it! :(

They just played this ep I think last Sunday on the Brady brunch, than right after the pilot marriage ep. Funny seeing the last ep, them so grown up and than seeing them all as little kids again!!! :)

And, had the show been renewed for a sixth season, it's very possible that the show would have gone on without Mike Brady.

It was being planned that Mike would be killed and that Carol would be a widow. The Schwartzes were tired of Robert Reed's attitude and were strongly considering a Brady Bunch without a father.

I'm glad it ended when it did than! I don't like the idea of Mike Brady passing! Carol already lost one husband. ( He died right? She wasn't divorced I don't think.) No, I think that would be entirely too sad if Mike died.:( And the kids my gosh, those boys losing a mother than their father too, and the girls loved Mike like their own biological father too! If the show were to go on without Robert Reed, I would rather have a new actor come in and play Mr. Brady. But than IDK about that either. We all knew and loved Robert Reed's Mike Brady so much. who could have filled his shoes? So I'm thinking it was a good thing the show came to an end. ;)

I haven't read or heard anywhere that Carol was divorced but I'm 100% positive she wasn't. Divorce was too hot a topic for TV in 1969 when the show started.

(they originally wanted to make Mary a divorcee on THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW in 1970, but didn't for that reason)

in the 60s they mostly didn't make finales of TV shows (THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW and THE FUGITIVE were 2 of the rare exceptions)

My favorite part of this ep is the way Greg squeals at Peter when Peter starts laughing about Greg's hair being orange. It's impossible to type it here, but it was funny to me.

As far as I can tell, they never disclosed the fate of Carol's first husband. I would assume, given how squeaky clean the show was, that he did indeed pass away, but we'll never really know, will we?

I loved the way Chris giggled and said "You look like Lucille Ball".

Regarding the finale episodes of 'Gilligan's Island' and 'The Brady Bunch'

In both cases it was unknown that these were going to be the finales,In fact 'Gilligan's Island' WAS renewed for a fourth season but 'Gunsmoke' was in fact cancelled but it was given a second chance at the last minute so an hour was needed.I'm assuming another half-hour sitcom (probably a new one) also was given the ax.

Most speculate that if 'The Brady Bunch' had survived we would've seen Robert Reed on it.Sherwood Schwartz was looking to kill-off or recast Mike Brady.

Actually Sherwood Schwartz's original intention was for Carol to be divorced. However the censor's refused to allow a divorced character on TV in 1969 (Mary Tyler Moore ran into the same problem the following season when she wanted to make Mary Richards a divorcee!) so the writers deliberately did not address Carol's marital status previuous to marrying Mike. That way the viewers could come to their own conclusions!

If anything, the episode I wouldnt be in if I'm Mr. Brady is the episode when Peter voice changes. What a big deal that was. And how corny is that song? I mean if they were that worried about his voice, why didnt he a)not be in the group for that particular song or b)have him just mouth the words without singing. I mean what a frigging big deal they made of that.

the other show that was cancelled along with GI was the sitcom RUN BUDDY RUN ( a satire of the "man on the run" shows)

If you read Sherwood Schwartz' book, if even some of what he claims Robert Reed did is true, he was a real pill. Schwartz said they started playing games. He'd write things into the script that he knew Reed would challenge and would have an answer ready when it happened. During the famous payphone in the house episode, Reed ranted about the lack of believably. He then asked where the Bradys lived. Schwartz said "Santa Monica", which infuriated Reed because they both did research and found out that SM was the only city in the United States that allowed payphones in residences.

It was needed for the plot but I admit, I thought it was stretching it there. The fact that Santa Monica was the only place that allowed pay phones and I wonder if Reed realized SS was putting one over him. I think they both were hard headed.

It's a pretty good episode but it's pretty lame to say, it's too bad your father is out of town and will miss your graduation. Out of town? Gimme a break!

If I were Schwartz I would have made the line, it's too bad your father is in the hospital with a broken leg, or something like that.

If Reed was quibbling about the pay phone, it's amazing they made it 5 seasons, let alone subsequent Brady shows.

Me too. If Greg had caught Bobby, he would have beaten the crap out of him—very unBradylike!
