Are there certain shows that were spun off from its parent show that you like better than the parent show?

Mine are:

Family Matters from Perfect Strangers
Good Times from Maude (Although I am enjoying Maude)
The Golden Palace from the Golden Girls (I still like Godlen Girls)
In the past, I liked a A Different world over The Cosby Show (Even though I loved the Cosby Show)
Knots Landing from Dallas.

I still like the parent shows. I have nothing against them at all. They were great.

Melrose Place over 90210.

I loved KL and think overall it was a better show than Dallas but Dallas is still my favorite show. The first 8 seasons was as good as tv gets. I agree that ADW was a better show than TCS. And that says a lot since I hated the first season and boycotted it after if forced Family Ties to move to Sundays. lol

As much tv as you watch each year, I'm surprised you haven't seen it.

Same here. Its one of the few shows that I actually like over the original show it spun off from. I like Cheers but I love Frasier. :)

Although I liked Beverly Hills 90210, I love Melrose Place more.
There are times I like the continuation of Archie Bunker's Place than the original All in the family.

Four out of six seasons of Emergency! are on hulu. Have been for quite a while as I eventually watched them all and completed doing so at least a year ago.

Not intending to start one of *those* spinoff debates...as I know this to be empirical fact: Hello Larry did not originate with Diff'rent Strokes. The first crossover between the two shows did not air until after the network decided to move Hello Larry up from its original 9:30PM Friday timeslot to 8:30. That was barely a month after it began, but after is not before.

Now, Facts Of Life--there's a spinoff. And I definitely preferred it.

Green Acres is also not a spinoff by the conventional definition, but in a time of much looser definition of the term, both it and Petticoat Junction were cited in print as 'Beverly Hillbillies spinoffs' as opposed to GA being a spinoff of PJ. However you choose to work that one out, I prefer the spinoff. ;)

I may be the only fan of The Tortellis who didn't watch Cheers...or just the only one not afraid to admit it.

Ok, I have deleted that from my list, do you want to look over it again and correct any others? You also need to go here and do some editing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_spin-offs

For the record though, you are right and I had forgotten that it wasn't an actual spinoff.

Isn't Trapper John, MD a MASH spinoff? I know I enjoyed that show when it aired.

I also preferred Benson over Soap and Knots Landing over Dallas. And when I used to watch the CSI's, I did prefer Miami to Las Vegas.

Cool.
Although the Douglases weren't on Petitcoat Junction prior to Green Acres, it is definitely a spinoff. It took place in the same town and half of the supporting characters were featured in Petticoat Junction.

Good Times was developed Norman Lear And he Told Easter Rolle that he was giving her own 'her' own show and that they were going to spin Florida off in to her own show in1973. It's Is a Spin-off. Nobody know better r then Norman Lear and if says it was a spin-off then i is a spin-off. He was a creator and Production supervisor.

I guess there will always be a debate with Good Times being a Spin-Off from Maude.

Reason for being a spin-off:

The character of Florida Evans played by Esther Rolle went on to top-billing of a new show.

Reasons to not be a spin-off:

Florida commuted to Tuckahoe, NY to her job as a maid/housekeeper for The Findlays on Maude. We are introduced to her husband, Henry played by John Amos. Florida and Henry would have to live in the New York area.

When Florida moved on to Good Times, she was still Florida, but her husband was now James and they live in Chicago.

Yeah he gave Esther her own show but that's all it was. So he wrote her OUT of Maude so she can star on Good Times. It was a WRITEOFF not SPINOFF

Uh, it was a spinoff. LOL. She was written off one show and spun into another. In all honesty, its not a big issue anymore. As I've always said, spinoffs don't have to have exact continuity. The idea being the catalyst/inspiration for a continuation of something is the idea here. Solomon, you are more than welcome to your opinion. However, no one has convinced me otherwise and chances are that they won't. Besides, if im going to debate I want to debate about something new and fresh. LOL.

The Parkers > Moesha - Moesha comes off as too much of a teen drama, IMO.

Laverne and Shirley > Happy Days - all eps. before the final season w/o Cindy Williams

Daria > Beavis and Butt-Head - I enjoyed both shows but Daria showed that it can funny while sending a message at the same time more so than B&BH

Emergency! > Adam-12 > Dragnet - I like all three shows though
