View Full Version : Why Was The Jackee '227' Spinoff NOT Picked Up If It Was Ranked 5th in the Ratings???
Brian Damage 02-12-2012, 12:55 PM Jackee
Relations between Marla Gibbs and Jackie Harry were rather tense by the fourth season of 227, mainly because Jackee’s character, Sandra, had become the breakout star of the series. Harry filmed a pilot which aired in 1989 in which Sandra moved to New York to accept a job at a film studio. When it turned out that the studio in question made adult films, she instead took a job at a spa. The pilot had a plum slot right after The Cosby Show and finished fifth in the ratings, but NBC still declined to pick it up.

ThomasE 02-12-2012, 03:18 PM I read that Jackee was grateful that the show did not get picked up. I know that some did not like the show after Jackee left but the show was till good to me. You still had a lot of good characters to work with and were funny. I taped the pilot ep when it aired but threw it out. LOL. Oops! However, retrieved another ep by someone (who will remain nameless. LOL.) The show was ok. I wanted to see how Sandra would adapt weekly out of her 22 environment.
Brian Damage 02-12-2012, 03:29 PM Mostly all actors are happy when they don't get a spinoff for some reason. Charlotte Rae of Diff'rent Strokes didn't want one and neither did The Ropers. It just baffles me that if the show was a top 10 rating, why scrap it? I know it was cushioned with the Cosby Show, but still, it just does not make any sense to me.
ThomasE 02-12-2012, 03:38 PM I'm wondering if NBC lacked faith that show would have made it. If it had made it, it would have had the "Flo" syndrome. Iconic character has issues with the lead and moves off to her own piece and out of the hair of the lead. I loved Marla and I thought she seemed reasonable, though.

The ratings for Jackee was irrelevant since NBC only aired one episode-lol The person acted like Jackee was aired for 6 weeks. By the way I have the first NBC episode on tape somewhere because I recieved a copy from someone lol

Granted Sol, it was one episode, but it did really well. Why not continue with the project then?

I know. However, for some reason, NBC said no. It was a blessing for Jackee, though.

Perhaps, but who knows what might have been. I guess I see your point though, because if Jackee was a hit, then she probably would have been type cast as the Sandra character forever. lol

Maybe because they didn't want to take a chance on 227 falling in the ratings?

I see what you are saying, but that would mean that NBC thought very highly of Jackee and the Sandra character. So, it still doesn't make that much sense. A tv mystery indeed. lol

I just saw that the following season of 227 was the last so yeah it was ODD that they didn't spinoff Jackee.

Just saw that Sandra was not seen that much in season 5 at all, so I can see that season of 227 was unwatchable

I am guessing because there was friction between Jackee Harry and Marla Gibbs.
Mr. Television 02-12-2012, 05:29 PM Yea Jackee was billed as a special guest star during the last season. The show had JTS by that point.

Yea. She was in the opening credits but only on the shows that she was in. NBC moved the show off Saturday halfway through the final year. I still haven't seen the last episode and I watched it almost to the end. lol

People say that but I disagree as this season is my second favorite. I loved the characters in this season. I'm disappointed that Jackee was not in the show all the way through but it was still a good season overall.

Yep. The one thing that his show did was bring in some noteable guests. I liked that the fact that they used Phyllis Diller.
Patient: OMG! They made me look like Phyllis Diller!!!!!
Mary: Child, I'd sue the hospital for that mistake!

The higher ups and Marla mutully agreed that it was time to end the show. They had enough eps to run it in syndication and decided to end it there. In the fall of 1990, BET's "Screen Scene" reported that there was a rumor either 227 or Amen would be returning. It turns out that Amen was the show scheduled to return.

She decided to end the show? I think NBC decided to end the show since it finished below 30# LOL
I would only buy that it was her decision if the show was #13.

I read it from a website whose name I can't remember and the rumor about 227 or Amen comes from a "Screen Scene" episode which I actully have in archive.
the pilot lost a big chunk of the Cosby lead-in. That, and negative reaction probably kept NBC from picking it up as a series.

Seems like it would have made more sense to air it after 227. Why the hell did NBC air it after the Cosby Show? That was dumb

GSU2004 10-14-2012, 04:47 AM I just saw TVONE's Life After featuring Marla Gibbs (was surprised to learn her real name is Margaret), she stated briefly the show was supposed to return for a 6th season and then they started talking about her theatre in South Central LA. The video is available on TVOne's website at www.tvoneonline.com under Life After.
I've heard the rumors of 1990 where NBC was only going to bring back one black show between Amen and 227. The last season of Amen felt thrown together, so I guess they were surprised to be coming back.
Admittedly, I felt bringing on Countess Vaughn as Alexandria was the beginning of the end of the show for me. I just get turned off by 'nerdy, overly smart kids' on TV. We all know when kids are added, it means the show is running out of steam.
Jackee had a Life After had talked very little about the show, they discussed Sister, Sister more than 227 surprisingly.
GSU2004 10-14-2012, 04:50 AM TVOne supposedly used to air the 'Jackee' episode un-edited. I remember on tv.com a member discussing how they were surprised to see this episode in that form.
I finally saw the pilot of Jackee and was not impressed with it to be honest. She belonged on 227 and it was sad about the rift between her and Marla. It hurt both of their careers for a few years. Jackee stated that she had a hard time finding constant work after final few episodes on 227. In an interview with Ebony, she stated she filmed several pilots but none were ever picked up. She almost didn' take the role on Sister, Sister as she felt she was not to play a mother.
Big3sCompanyFan 10-14-2012, 07:59 AM Exactly my point! So very odd. A TV Mystery!

You may be right about Amen being "Thrown together" as it seems so different from the other seasons as far as the storylines and transition beats go.
I too remember hearing those rumors about one of those shows. I heard it on BET's now defunct show "Screen Scene" from 1990. I was kind of hoping that it was 227 that was coming back. It was AMEN that came back and I was actually cool with the changes. I knew Barbara Montgomery could not come back because she had taken the role on ABC's "Married People". Amelia and Thelma became best friends around this time which I think was great. I was disappointed that AMEN didn't come back for a season six but it was all good.

I remember that show as well. I was hoping for 227 as well too. I also heard that Marla was ready to move on from TV as well from other sources from that year. At least the series ended with Brenda's graduation from high school. I remember when TV.com was tvtome.com and I joined in with several fans when we made up our own season six of the show. We even had an in-depth conversation back in 2004 about why the show went downhill.

Both versions where 227's theme and ending credits were tossed on it and the original 1989 edition are on youtube. The theme song the had the 'living la vida loca' beat to it. Quite catchy and very 80's
GSU2004 02-23-2016, 04:05 PM When TVOne had the rights to the show, it aired the original 1980's version of the spin-off and it did throw off many people as they thought it was some other show they forgot about. I had to remind people this aired as a special Thursday night edition of 227 in 1989 and most syndication packages just tossed it in there with edited openings. A few outlets aired this unedited not many but they did
