View Full Version : Shows with unresolved cliffhangers???
ThomasE 01-25-2012, 12:10 AM Don't you hate it when a TV show is so confident that they'll get renewed for another season and then film a "to be continued" storyline. Then BAM!!! The show has been canceled. Can we all start naming the shows that have failed victim cancellation with a cliffhanger and the storyline that had no conclusion?
factsoflife 01-25-2012, 12:21 AM "Popular" ended it's run with Brooke being hit by a car. Producers had expected to be picked up for a third season, but the network changed their mind and it never came back.
"My So-Called Life" ended it's run with a cliffhanger, namely, Angela found out that Brian Krakow, not Jordan Catalano had written her the love note she was so fond of! We never found out what happened.
I also believe that "Cybill" ended on a cliffhanger as well!
ThomasE 01-25-2012, 12:25 AM I would name soaps but that would be too easy. LOL.
ALF is the show that immediately comes to mind, though I know they resolved that with a TV movie several years later.
catlover79 01-25-2012, 12:58 AM Christy (1994-95, CBS) ended on a cliffhanger. At the time, the network had changed presidents and apparently the new president (who is still there, Les Moonves) wasn't thrilled with the period drama. It ended with Christy (Kellie Martin) literally caught between the two men in her life. I think at some point the original cast was supposed to make a few movies of the week to wrap things up, but it never happened.
In 2000, a largely different cast filmed three "reunion" movies in Canada (not Tennessee, where the CBS series was shot) for the now-defunct PAX network. They were not very well-received - and over a decade and a half (!!!) later, I'M STILL mad that CBS never gave Christy the chance and audience it deserved.
catlover79 01-25-2012, 01:00 AM ALF is the show that immediately comes to mind, though I know they resolved that with a TV movie several years later.
I remember that movie - it aired on ABC (not NBC) in January 1996. Sadly, none of the Tanners or Ochmoneks were in it. :(

That's fine. "Dallas" had an unresolved cliffhanger but it came back with a reunion movie five years later.
Models Inc. had a cliffhanger. Someone was shot and FOX left it up in the air. However, in the syndicated airing, there was a different ending with two additional scenes to resolve the cliffhanger. Albeit, one character was still stuck in a predicatment without resolution.

OMG YES! Grayson played by the deliciously evil Emma Samms was presumed to be shot dead! and poor Terri played by Carrie Anne Moss was left in limbo as a slave in white slavery!
ThomasE 01-25-2012, 01:21 AM Exactly, Factsoflife! You.said everything verbatim.
catlover79 01-25-2012, 01:31 AM OMG YES! Grayson played by the deliciously evil Emma Samms was presumed to be shot dead! and poor Terri played by Carrie Anne Moss was left in limbo as a slave in white slavery!
Didn't Carrie Anne Moss play TWO separate roles on that show?
ThomasE 01-25-2012, 09:50 AM Didn't Carrie Anne Moss play TWO separate roles on that show?
She played "Carrie", the twin that was involved in Grayson's prostitution ring. Her sister "Teri" was play by Stephanie Romanov. Teri died in the debut episode which led to a murder myster storyline. After that wrapped up, Stephanie Romanov came back as a model name Monique, who posed a threat to Carrie because she was a reminder of Teri and a threat to Julie, the senior model because Monique was very beuatiful just like deceased Teri.
Retro4Life 01-25-2012, 07:42 PM The NBC thriller "The Others" (circa 2000) ended in a cliffhanger, with all the major characters' lives in grave jeopardy.
We never found out what happened, and almost certainly never will. :(
catlover79 01-25-2012, 08:07 PM She played "Carrie", the twin that was involved in Grayson's prostitution ring. Her sister "Teri" was play by Stephanie Romanov. After that wrapped up, Stephanie Romanov came back as a model name Monique, who posed a threat to Carrie because she was a reminder of Teri and a threat to Julie, the senior model because Monique was very beuatiful just like deceased Teri.
That's right. Thanks - I knew someone had played two separate roles on that show.
D-Dey 01-25-2012, 08:11 PM Most recently the Season Two finale of "The Hard Times of RJ Berger." That cliffhanger is the reason I feel it deserved one more season.
Of course, once MTV ended Daria, played fewer music videos, and made almost half their programming into so-called "reality TV" I didn't see much of a reason to pay that much attention to the network.
JamesG 01-25-2012, 08:25 PM There are also shows with intentional cliffhangers, where the creators planned on leaving things open.
One famous example is "The Sopranos".
catlover79 01-25-2012, 10:47 PM The NBC thriller "The Others" (circa 2000) ended in a cliffhanger, with all the major characters' lives in grave jeopardy.
We never found out what happened, and almost certainly never will. :(
Wow, I'd never even heard of that show until now.
Retro4Life 01-25-2012, 10:57 PM Wow, I'd never even heard of that show until now.
For your edification. :)

catlover79 01-26-2012, 12:38 AM Thanks - it's still not ringing a bell. I remember the MOVIE The Others (with Nicole Kidman), but not this.
ThomasE 01-26-2012, 01:25 AM Half and Half was another show. One of the lead characters (Mona) received two marriage proposals and had to decide who she would marry.
UPN's "Eve" was another show. CW was a merging of UPN and WB so Eve did not get renewed. Darius McCrary and Kellie Williams from Family Matters played an estranged husband and wife. Kellie's character Lynn was involved (I think) with one of the male characters. Jamal (McCrary) was an ex con that came home and discovered the other man hiding in the closet. No continuation with this storyline. I wish there was one.
Moesha: UPN canceled this show before we could get a resolution. Moesha's brother was kidnapped and either Moesha or one of her three roomates were pregnant and that was that. The storyline could have possibly continued on spinoff sitcom "The Parkers".
comedyfreak 01-26-2012, 06:27 AM Soap ended with a cliffhanger that was never resolved.
factsoflife 01-26-2012, 04:59 PM All My Children and One Life to Live both ended with big cliffhangers!
Retro4Life 01-26-2012, 05:56 PM The 1984-1985 TV series "V" (not the horrible remake) ended on a big cliffhanger, with the fates of many of the characters up in the air. Another one that will will no doubt never have resolved. :(
Retro4Life 01-26-2012, 05:57 PM "Twin Peaks" ended its run in 1992 on a cliffhanger, again, never to be resolved.
JamesG 01-26-2012, 06:58 PM "Twin Peaks" ended its run in 1992 on a cliffhanger, again, never to be resolved.
However, there is the feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me which was a prequel/sequel to the series.
Retro4Life 01-26-2012, 07:34 PM ^ Yes, but that film didn't resolve the cliffhanger at the end of the series.
JamesG 01-26-2012, 07:43 PM ^ I haven't seen the film in years, so I forgot exactly what it did/didn't mention.
I love the series though.

UMFaninMD 01-26-2012, 08:26 PM The 4400
Blake's 7
Benson
robyrob 01-27-2012, 12:10 AM Mork and Mindy ended with a cliffhanger - they were being chased through space and time by the evil Kalnick
(they actually aired The Mork Report as the final episode, but it was out of production order, and it didn't resolve any of the hanging storyline because it had to have happened before the 3-part finale as Mindy's apartment had been destroyed)
friendsfa26 01-29-2012, 04:23 PM here's 2 obvious cartoon shows that ended before the storyline was resolved
dungeons & dragons (the kids never made it back home)
the pirates of dark water (canned because of production costs)
also, does the a-team count? they never really resolved that because it was canned during the 5th season
Retro4Life 01-29-2012, 06:28 PM The 4400
Blake's 7
Benson
One could realistically assume that the final episode of Blakes 7 DID conclude the series...though from what I've read it was written in such a way that it could serve as either a true finale or a cliffhanger.
I've always hoped that ****SPOILER ALERT******
most, if not all, of those fallen could have been brought back somehow, though. That episode left me with a terrible feeling.
tv star collector 01-29-2012, 07:51 PM A few that come to mind:
Tru Calling
Heroes
No Ordinary Family
ThomasE 01-29-2012, 09:19 PM Wait! No ordinary family had an unresolved cliffhanger? I loved that show. How sucky is that?
factsoflife 01-30-2012, 01:36 AM Didn't Wonder Woman end with a cliffhanger? I believe something about a car crash?
megamanj2004 02-01-2012, 12:17 AM The ones that instantly spring into mind:
ALF
Soap
Benson
The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo
catlover79 02-01-2012, 02:44 AM Didn't Wonder Woman end with a cliffhanger? I believe something about a car crash?
That I don't remember, sorry. :(

ThomasE 02-04-2012, 11:30 PM "Fifteen" The Nickelodeon high school drama. The show that brought out stars Chris Martin, Vanessa Okuma, Laura Harris and of course Ryan Reynolds.
Swan's Crossing may not have had a finale. I'm not sure, though.
catlover79 02-04-2012, 11:45 PM Wasn't Fifteen based off of a Beverly Cleary novel?
ThomasE 02-04-2012, 11:57 PM I didn't know that. Never heard of it. I used to want to be on "Fifteen". LOL. Heck, I always wanted to be on Nickeldeon. I finally got my chance in 1995.
catlover79 02-05-2012, 12:22 AM I went back and looked it up. It wasn't based on Beverly Cleary's book by the same name. The show was actually originally titled Hillside.
ThomasE 02-05-2012, 01:05 AM That last part would be correct. It would have made sense to keep it "Hillside" as some of the characters were fifteen years old for three years. LOL.
catlover79 02-05-2012, 01:15 AM It also had at least one breakout star to its credit - Ryan Reynolds!
ThomasE 02-05-2012, 02:47 AM Of course! I named him earlier along with some others. LOL. His character became obnoxious later.
factsoflife 02-06-2012, 12:52 PM Of course! I named him earlier along with some others. LOL. His character became obnoxious later.
Yes, he did. When Billy's parents got a divorce he became so mean to Courtney; his sister.
Branimir202 02-07-2012, 06:27 PM Boy Meets World sort of had one, a teacher was hit by a motorcycle and it was said that they thought he'd be alright. Then we just never saw or heard about him again
factsoflife 02-07-2012, 08:13 PM I feel like Malibu Shores had a cliffhanger at it's final episode, but I can't recall.

Ever feel frustrated when a show wraps up its season before the long winter hiatus and leaves things unresolved? Hey, it's just a season finale. You'll get closure when that show returns in the fall. But then there are some long-running TV shows that ended a season on their cliffhanger—and then got cancelled. Here are some shows where audiences never got to find out what happened.

factsoflife 05-04-2016, 05:24 AM Moesha ended with two big cliffhangers; somebody was pregnant (we never find out who) and Miles, Mo's brother is kidnapped. UPN cancelled the series unexpectedly and producers didn't have time to write a proper finale.
Regulus 05-04-2016, 09:10 AM here's 2 obvious cartoon shows that ended before the storyline was resolved
dungeons @dragons (the kids never made it back home)
the pirates of dark water (canned because of production costs)
Hanna-Barbera made a number of animated series which had a storyline that was never resolved including:
Dino Boy
The Adventures of Gulliver
The New Adventures of Huck Finn
Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space
Moby Dick
Shazzan
Valley of the Dinosuars
Filmation's Journey to the Center of the Earth and Depatie-Freling's Return to the Planet of the Apes also had storylines that were never resolved.
And here's a series that had it's storyline resolved, but not for those of us that lived in the USA:
Cliffhangers! (NBC 1979)
This series, which paid homage to the old-time movie serials, got yanked off the air with one episode unaired   :angryfire. The final episode WAS aired overseas. It took me 30 years to find out how this series ended (Thanks I*fer).
scrapple 05-04-2016, 10:24 PM Happy Days left with the biggest cliffhanger of all: how a show this bad could stay on the air all those years.
