I am spending a little time catching up on some of the episodes that have aired this week.

First notable change (other than the cut-up openings): in the episode "A Love Story", the song that Howard turns on his record player was completely changed. They played some sort of jazz piece. It was supposed to be "As Time Goes By". That's what was in the DVD set, so I wonder why it got changed for Hallmark's airing.

Also....in setting my DVR, I noticed that starting Feb. 1st, there is another change coming. CHEERS is running at the 2 am spot. They seem to have moved TBNS to the 8 am slot again.

Now my DirecTV on-air guide is showing that TBNS is back in its regular, middle-of-the-night time slot. Either DirecTV screwed up, or Hallmark keeps changing its mind. 2:00 am to 4:00 am EST on DirecTV shows up at 11:00 pm to 1:00 am Pacific Time for me, but cable systems here still show it at 2:00 am.

Make up your mind, Hallmark....

I haven't seen seasons 5 or 6 and they aren't on dvd.

No, they're not on DVD yet. Amazon has had both on Pre-Order for a few months. I keep getting notices from them saying that they're still looking into the delay. No one really knows for certain why they haven't been released. Conjecture is either that Fox hasn't made enough dough from the first 4 seasons yet, or there are residuals to consider by Season 5, or rights to music used.

Are you sure about that? Maybe it's just me, but I watched an episode last night on Hallmark and I couldn't believe how much time compression was used. I haven't been watching the Bob Newhart Show regularly on Hallmark, but I can't recall seeing that much time compression on any show in a long time. :lol:

The best way to tell about time compression and cuts is to actually TIME the show. If it runs less than 24 minutes, it's been cut and/or time compressed. The opening credits, up through "Over the River and Through the Woods", have been chopped up. They actually got a little longer in season 4, but still, the first bit with Bob's coffee cup is missing. (I am only "caught up" as far as the Moo-goo-gai-pan episode, from Hallmark. Of course I don't feel that I have to watch every single episode through Season 4. Once I get to Season 5, which has started, that will change.)

I think Hallmark is editing the episodes more than METV. Me TV seems to do more time compression. Hallmark is so cheap, they are using split screens for opening and closing credits.

Syndicated prints will edit or time compression run about 22 minutes nowadays. TBNS uncut, with no time compression, should run between 25 to 25:30 minutes. (approximate range.)

Yeah Antenna TV has the same cuts as my local stations. My local station cuts are LONGER than cable. Never though that would happen

Wow, there are entire scenes cut out then I guess. That's a shame. At least we get to see the show even thought it's significantly shortered.

I've recorded all the Season 5 episodes on the hallmark channel so far and they all have the same running time of 20:58. There's definitely time compression though so I'd guess they'd be 22-23 minutes long without compression. That's not too bad, 2-3 minutes of cuts. Could be much worse.

I have recorded MeTV episodes from all seasons they air (seasons 1-5, dunno why they don't have the final season) and can verify that ALL episodes run between 22:54 and 23:01. And that includes the full opening and closing credits.

Thus far I only have the retail season 1 DVD to compare the MeTV broadcasts to the full-length versions, but haven't noticed anything that was cut. I threw out my season 1 MeTV DVD transfers when I aquired the retail DVD so I cannot confirm this, but I am led to believe the complete episode is sped up to 23 min, which is largely unnoticeable. I once compared their broadcast of an early Cheers episode to the uncut DVD and not a single line was removed - the whole episode was just sped up.

After I heard them censor Cliff saying "butt" I said to hell with this network. Butt...cutting a childish euphemism that's acceptable on Sesame Street. Ridiculous. The dialogue was fine for primetime network television decades ago, why on earth is it not acceptable for a cable network now? Their silly edits often ruined jokes to boot which is even worse than simple censorship. Granted, Cheers' dialogue contains alot more dirty words than Bob Newhart. But given the fact they edited anything even remotely suggestive I could easily see them butchering TBNS.

I really admire MeTV's presentation of their shows. Most of them get the same respectable treatment as TBNS with generous runtimes and minimal editing. If any of your local stations carry it then it's worth getting an antenna and trying to pick it up.

Was last night's episode [the anniversary one] shorter time wise? Just wondering.

I thought it was funny that Emily fantasized about being married to Howard. :lol:
