Can you name TV shows that wound up getting a second chance under the original name title or with a spinoff title? What shows came back to TV with all new episodes? I will hold off naming some until I hear from you guys. i'll do on, though.

Melrose Place, it came back in 2009 but was canceled after 18 eps for the season.

Dark Shadows, a soap from the 60's came back in the early 90's on NBC as a prime time show. There has been a lot of that with tv shows. There are so many.

Hawaii-Five-O has most recently.

Hunter came back as a new series in 2003 but did not last long.

I know about Hawaii Five-O but did not know about "Hunter". That's news to me. LOL.

"Land of the Lost" (1974-1976) was revived in 1991-1992.

Star Trek came back with a bunch of spinoffs - The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise.

Also, the movie series if that counts.

How about Family Guy, Futurama and Beavis and Butt-head?

I think those would qualify as "shows brought back after cancellation". Those are the same shows and are not spin-offs or revivals.

Something like the original "Dallas" and the upcoming TNT series "Dallas" fits better.

The Outer Limits

original (1963-early 1965)
remake (1995-2002)

This is probably one of the few examples of a revival lasting longer than the original series.

Dragnet definitely fits this bill.

Started in 1951-59.

Was successfully revived from early 1967 until 1970.

Came back twice more but fared unsuccessfully in 1989 and in early 2003.

Kojak came back in 1989 and in 2005 unsuccessfully.

Mission: Impossible returned in 1988 and stayed til 1990.

Knight Rider returned in 2008 and fared no where as successful as the 1980s version.

Charlie's Angels returned this fall and bombed really badly.

Bionic Woman returned in 2007 and bombed horribly.

Well, "Family Affair" came back with Gary Cole as the lead in 2003 (I think) and there was the original from 1966-1971.

I count All in the family also. It was a show that ran for 13 years but was packaged as two separate shows with the other title "Archie Bunker's Place.

"Laugh-In" is another (1967-1973) then (1978).

"V" (1985) then again (2010)

Didnt Mamas Family come back after its original run?

ThomasE

@ Duckie: I was going to list that but yes it did. It came back as a continuation but I am accepting that because it was restarting again. It's a 2.0 IMO. It's A Living is a 2.0 as well. It was canceled after two years then a year later, it did well in the syndication rerun market. The show performed so well that it was decided the show would be brought back in the form of first run syndication.

The Love Boat (1977) and the 2.0 is The Love Boat: Next Wave (1998)

Hey, did Fantasy Island have a 2.0?

I'd think they count. ThomasE asked for shows that "wound up getting a second chance under the original name title or with a spinoff title." All three shows were gone for years (Family Guy for 3, Futurama for 7 and Beavis for 14). Beavis and Butt-head even returned under a slightly modified title: Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-head.

Yes there was a Fantasy Island revivial and it debuted in 1998 and only lasted several months.

The Twilight Zone is another one:

Original version: 1959-1964

The 1980s revival: 1985-89

2003 revival

Didnt Mamas Family come back after its original run?

Yes, Mama's Family aired on NBC, for a season and a half, 1883-84. This version starred Vicki Lawrence, Ken Berry, Dorothy Lyman, Rue McClanahan and Betty White. Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman made guest appearances.

The series returned in first run syndication, in September 1986, and ran until 1990. Vicki Lawrence, Ken Berry and Dorothy Lyman were back joined by Beverly Archer and Allan Kayser. Rue McClanahan and Betty White started on The Golden Girls in 1985, so they were gone.

The Golden Girls became The Golden Palace, sans Bea Arthur and with Cheec Marin. It last a season before being canceled.

Parenthood was first a failed 1990 TV series and has since been a mildly successful NBC series since 2010.

9 to 5. That was a good one. I loved Rita Moreno in the role of Violet. It came back almost a completely different show in 1986 with Sally Struthers as lead character Marsha.

"Dallas" that show is doing a 2.0/continuation this summer on TNT. I wonder how "Knots Landing" (Dallas spinoff) would work as a 2.0.

General Hospital: Night Shift from the daytime General Hospital.

Ooooh! Get Smart (1995) from Get Smart (1965).
Andy Dick was the son in this one although in the 1.0, Max and 99 had twins. 99 was also on the recurring basis.

It's a cartoon, but has The Jetsons been mentioned. It's original run was the early 1960s, than it made a comeback during the 1980s. The 80s version was not nearly as good as the original.
