View Full Version : Just Curious, But Why Doesn't Cloris Leachman Get The Same Props As Betty White???
Brian Damage 12-30-2011, 11:27 AM Cloris is still making people laugh after all these years. Her career rivals Betty's and perhaps even exceeds her with an Oscar win. Is it because Betty White is a more likeable personality? I am just curious as to why?

scotsguy 01-03-2012, 11:48 AM No I think they're both loved,Betty's lovable Rose in "The Golden Girls" perhaps gives Betty an edge in the popular stakes.
Think Cloris has had bit more success in drama as well as comedy.
McGillicuddy 03-10-2012, 12:41 AM When Cloris was on Dancing With the Stars, she was very well respected as a legend, and everybody's senior, but I think she can get carried away and be rather annoying and obnoxious, when she's trying to be funny.
She's OK when she's playing a grandmother type on a sit-com, but she just isn't no Betty White, plain and simple!! I also agree, her talents are more rooted in drama rather than comedy.

While I'll agree that there can only be one Betty White, Cloris is more rooted in comedy. She is a Mel Brooks favorite and has been in so many comedies and sitcoms. Yes, she won an Oscar for a drama, but she is more well known for her comedy. IMO

Oh WOW! I completely forgot about her ties to Mel Brooks. She was in the short-lived series The Nutt House, with Harvey Korman, produced by MB, and the movies Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety. Prior to The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Phyllis she has a very extensive resume rooted in drama.

Here are two tidbits for fans of Cloris: She co-starred in the 1957-58 season of ......Lassie! as Timmy's mother before June Lockhart took over the role. I read somewhere that she couldn't understand why the dog got more fan mail than she! Also in the pilot for Wonder Woman (1975) she chews up the scenery as Wonder Woman's mother on Paradise Island! She is a real hoot in this, which can be seen in the 1st season DVD of WW!

Cool Leslie, thanx for the heads up on this. I have the Wonder Woman Dvd's, and need to check this out!
McGillicuddy 03-13-2012, 06:31 PM Anybody remember the short-lived sitcom, Thanks (late '90's) ,about a family of 17th century Puritans? Cloris played the grandmother on this. I remember her being pretty hilarious in it.

And she was hysterical as Ellen Degeneres's mother in Ellen's sadly short-lived sitcom, The Ellen Show in 2001, a show that had a whole lot of potential and should have been given the opportunity to develop. (IMO, it was better than her earlier, more successful sitcom.) Thankfully, that 18-episode series is available on DVD. Each episode is also available on Amazon in pay-per-view format: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0285358/episodes?season=1
Mr. Television 03-15-2012, 08:45 PM Cloris was great on The Nutt House which was a short lived sitcom in 1989 co-starring Harvey Korman. That should have lasted longer.
