And why do we have to take it?

Is the full uncut special going to be shown later this month? Does anyone know?

They edit it to make room for that dumb Disney Prep and Landing. I don't know why they pair that with Charlie Brown. They should just show two Charlie Brown specials together and show the other junk another night.

ABC's edited version of A Charlie Brown Christmas is a joke. I hope they lose the rights and another network picks it up.

There's no good reason why they can't air the uncut Peanuts and Grinch specials in a half-hour slot. Greed is what's keeping them from doing it. God forbid they lose a few minutes of commercials a year.

Watching it on DVD is the best way to go, IMO. I never watch on network TV anymore. Just ruins it for me. It's not that long of a show to begin with, so why edit out anything?

No, they have the unedited Charlie Brown Christmas, followed by Charlie Brown Christmas Tales and Prep & Landing 7 minute short all in the 8-9pm hour on Dec. 15.

I don't bother with the ABC airings since I bought the Peanuts 1960's Collection a couple of years ago, you get A Charlie Brown Christmas, It's the Great Pumpkin and a handful of other great Peanut specials uncut. Highly recommended set.

I had the old Paramount DVD of A Charlie Brown Christmas up until a few years ago, when it was stolen from me. I plan on having all my favorites on Blu-ray by next Christmas, though.

Just waiting for the rights to lapse? Hallmark and LMN are dominating with the seasonal programming and the networks are falling behind big time.

And ABC is ruining it again with that stupid Prep and Landing this year. A Charlie Brown Christmas will air November 28 and December 20, and both showings have Prep and Landing with it. This just aggravates me. I guess I will be watching my BluRays and DVDs instead.

Yeah! Don't mess with our classic Christmas specials---Charlie Brown, The Grinch, Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus (Coming To Town), if you're not able to air them in their entirety, don't bother with them at all!!!!!

ABC will not be showing it unedited. A Charlie Brown Christmas hasn't been seen in its truly whole form since its third CBS airing (1967). There are Coca-Cola sponsor spots throughout the special that were cut out starting with the 1968 airing that haven't been seen since. That's why there are abrupt scene endings, noticeable music "jumps" and why the audio fades out awkwardly early during the end credits. I've been hoping for these scenes to be restored or at least replicated for years.

Those are not on the DVD either. What these guys mean are referring to is the edited half-hour version that ABC airs once a year, along with one airing that is in a one-hour time-period (usually paired with Charlie Brown Christmas Tales to fill up time). This year they are not airing the half-hour version at all and will air the one-hour time period version both times, which is the same content as the DVD.

Right, I understand that. I'm aware that ABC has been airing the special twice the past few years, and that the one in the 30-minute slot was hacked to ribbons by the network, while the one in the one-hour slot is the DVD/Blu-ray version.

It's just that the anal-retentive nerd in me thinks something that has several cuts shouldn't be referred to as "unedited." I know that ABC, themselves, has been guilty of using the term in reference to this cut of the show, which adds insult to injury in regards to the fact that no attempts have been made to restore the original cut.

You're never going to see it on TV like that anywhere (it's not even like that on DVD). That is the best you'll get. Last year you were calling it uncut.

I recorded Charlie Brown Christmas from ABC a few years ago, it runs 25 minutes not including commercials, so as far as I'm concerned it's complete.

Back in 1994, I recorded Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer from CBS, this is the version that has the song "Fame And Fortune" instead of the reprise of "We're A Couple Of Misfits." I much prefer the Fame And Fortune version. CBS airing however, does delete a couple things. Part of the song "We Are Santa's Elves" is deleted from CBS airing, also the scene where Yukon Cornelius discovers the peppermint mine is deleted from CBS airing. I believe the full version of Rudolph runs about 48 minutes, the CBS airing I have from 1994 runs 46 minutes.

The original 1964 airing of Rudolph would be cool to see for the commercials. But if I recall, the original airing does not resolve the fate of the misfit toys on the island. The following year in 1965 is when a new scene was included showing the toys being rescued.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I once rented a DVD of Rudolph that had both "cuts" of the special. This would have been about 2009. I'm not sure if it's still in print.

Well, Pavan, since you seem to have glossed over my posts from last year (in an attempt to play semantics, I'm sure), you also read that I used to own the DVD. So I'm sure you'll at least give me enough credit to be aware that the post-1967 edit is what's available on home video. Yes, I did use the word "uncut" last year in reference to ABC's butchered cut. Perhaps using the word was laziness on my part, but rest assured I've been aware of the cuts for well over a decade.

In any case, please relax, I'm not trying to vilify your precious ABC. I know it's not their fault the special hasn't been seen its uncut form in 45 years.

I don't know what you're trying to prove. The airing that they are airing this year is uncut and what we all know is uncut unless you saw the original airing in the '60s. It's not going to be the chopped-up half-hour version which everyone thinks it is going to be since it is being paired with a 7-minute Prep & Landing short. They air the special twice a year--the unedited version and the edited version. This year BOTH airings are the unedited version.

I think you have some sort of vendetta against me because you know very well what I'm trying to say here. Last year you were saying something very different.

AKA

I have no vendetta against you whatsoever, Pavan. You have never seemed to be anything other than a nice, decent man to me, and the love and hard work you've put into this site over the years is to be commended.

But your response to my initial post last night left me wondering what dog you have in this fight (and like the word "uncut" last year, I use the term "fight" very lightly). I wasn't combative, nor was I snarky. In fact, I think I was quite reasonable and did an adequate job making my case.

All I was trying to do was make the point that the truly uncut version of A Charlie Brown Christmas hasn't been seen since well before many of us were born, and you seemed to take umbrage with that, using my own year-old words to try and negate the premise of my post. You seemed offended that I would dare raise the issue. I wanted to start a discussion on the long-lost cut scenes, not start a war of semantics with you.

Luckily for me, I have the DVD, so I don't have to worry about that one. At least they're showing A Charlie Brown Christmas unedited, but I don't like that they're throwing Prep and Landing in there, because now the second Charlie Brown special, Charlie Brown's Christmas Tales, is edited. But I have that one on DVD too, so I will just be watching that instead.

Does anyone know when the network rights to the Peanuts specials are up for negotiation? Also, will Fox be airing Happiness Is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown again?

ABC has the rights through 2015.

Fox will be airing Happiness is a Warm Blanket on November 23, the day after Thanksgiving, competing against Frosty the Snowman on CBS and Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer on CW. That was a bad programming decision for them all to show them at the same time. With Thanksgiving as early as it is this year, I think this is way too early for these Christmas specials. I guess I'll be watching Frosty, then I can watch my DVD of Happiness is a Warm Blanket, then I'll have to watch Grandma when CW repeats it on December 21.

I hate when they do that which is why I don't like watching any of the classic Peanuts specials on commercial TV. I think it's stupid that they do this b/c it's already been edited for television. Um... it was made for television in the first place so it's only natural that they would make time for commercials.
