View Full Version : An Unknown Episode in Cheboygan, Michigan
JohnMann 11-22-2011, 11:04 PM Hi. A friend of mine was filmed with her entire family as part of an Unsolved Mysteries episode in Cheboygan, Michigan. This is a town in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan situated on Lake Huron. She's trying to find that episode as a family keepsake, but doesn't know what the episode was about. She knows it was in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I've done some web searches with no luck, and thought perhaps someone who knows this series well might remember. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

wiseguy182 11-23-2011, 05:19 AM I live in Michigan as well but I can't recall any from Cheyboygan

Can you tell us any details about the segment or what type of segment it was? Any names might help us figure it out as well.
TracyLynnS 11-23-2011, 10:45 AM Do you know if it was a criminal case, a Lost Loves (looking for missing family members), or a parental abduction?
This was a Lost Loves from Flint, MI. I suppose it's possible some family members may have been in Cheboygan, but it's a long shot.

TracyLynnS 11-23-2011, 10:48 AM Here's one that I think had reunited some family members in St. Clair Shores, MI (or a city nearby). This is a long way from Cheboygan and is probably not the case.

Todd Mueller 11-23-2011, 11:10 AM The only thing that sticks out in my mind is that Patsy Ramsey (late mother of JonBenet Ramsey) was from Cheboygan. Could that have been the connection?
RobinW 11-23-2011, 11:19 AM Here's a listing of UM stories that took place in Michigan. I don't see any stories that specifically took place in Cheboygan, but it's entirely possible that UM decided to film some scenes for a Michigan-related story there.

undertakeress 11-24-2011, 02:43 PM Weird thought, but my cousins are from St. Clair Shores and moved to Cheyboygan. She doesn't remember anything except the couple that went missing off their boat a few years ago, and the female's body was found but the male's never was. Otherwise it's a quiet town.
JonBenet's family lived in Charlevoix, not Cheboygan - opposite side of the state.

Serious "DUH" moment on my part. Confusing my "C" cities. I was thinking Charlevoix the whole time and typing Cheybogan. Thanks for correcting me!
I don't even know where Cheybogan, MI is. I know where Sheboygan, WI is. Learn something new everyday... :-)

Hold up your left hand in front of you. Cheboygan is at the tip of your pointer finger, and Charlevoix is on the knuckle of your pinky finger :) ;) :D

Yep, all michiganders carry around a permanent map of our state, don't we? lol I can't tell you how many times I've used that method when explaining where things are.
Twenty years ago, I met a lady from the UP. She told me that it's shaped like a running rabbit and yoopers use that for a map. Still not as cool as our mitten tho. :D

left hand might work if your palm is facing away from you. Right hand would be palm facing towards you.
Tighthead 11-25-2011, 10:00 AM Lana Stempien and Charles Rutherford? Not sure if that case was featured on UM, but it fits.
undertakeress 11-25-2011, 07:30 PM Thats what I meant, in front of you , not facing you :)

Thats who I was thinking about in an earlier post, however that only happened 3 years ago. The OP was talking about in the 80's and 90's....
thohow2000 05-08-2016, 12:17 PM Though I can’t remember the name of the case off hand, here is a little information that might help find what you are looking for. The case involves a family in WWII (the family moved to Cheboygan after the war). They were looking for a man that was attached to the US. Army that aided their family. Unsolved mysteries filmed the episode in Cheboygan using extras for the area and the high school. They Filmed at the train station just off court street and used one little halls to film. I remember this because I was in high school at the and was going to be an extra, however I got sick just before they filmed and could not take part. Hope this help you…

Hi, if you are talking about a family that last name started with s. I don't want to name names, I went to school with one at the catholic school. The episode was about margaret byrne, who died in 1952 and her body was found in a gravel pit outside of town. I don't recall the episode or air date. And I can't find it on episode list
It might be there, but I'm new to this forum, just registered to hopefully answer.

I'm almost certain it's this case. The railroad cars they use in the recreation are Detroit and Mackinac railroad box cars, which would have had a terminus up in Cheboygan.
Lisahill 04-20-2023, 08:39 AM Oh this is the one. I remember her talking about being in old dresses standing around the trains.
