View Full Version : Goodnight, Seattle (I'm Not in Kansas Anymore) But wait, I am!
andress_jade 10-14-2011, 10:30 PM I just got done watching Goodnight, Seattle on Hallmark and the vet that helps deliver David is from Kansas. They portrayed him as some dumb hick. Trust me, we are not like that. I have lived in Kansas all my life and we are very smart and there aren't that many farmers or "hicks" as a lot of TV shows portray.
I am proud to be a Kansas girl and am a bit offended that they portray us Kansans like that. I am kind of surprised they did that since Kirstie Alley is from Kansas and she was on Cheers.
I love the show and I loved the episode, I just felt that they were portraying Kansans in a bad light. :(
Okay, I'm done. :D
I didn't get that from that episode at all. I just thought the vet was young and inexperienced. :)
born2late 10-14-2011, 11:33 PM That episode made my eyes water. Anyway, now that they are showing the first ones I get the fun of seeing Niles discovering Daphne. :)

I'll have to watch that episode again, but I understand what you are saying. I hate when they portray people from other areas completely wrong. That episode with Bebe's finance being from Texas; when he asks Frasier to help her stop smoking? He was a little over the top. Being born and raised in Texas, it did make me laugh and  a bit.
Not to defend the writers or anything but maybe they just created the character and then just picked a place at random. Probably didn't realize that someone would pick up on it. But I've seen stuff on Frasier that is supposed to happen in Seattle (like the Leap Year ep where it was 80 degrees in Februrary? That is SO not accurate! I mean, it barely gets up to 80 in the summer sometimes! But I'm always amazed at how many things they get right!
born2late 10-15-2011, 02:11 PM Got a question. Frasier was moving to San Francisco. Didn't he fly to Chicago? Was he just going to visit Charlotte? I tried to stay up to rewatch them again on Hallmark early this morning, but fell asleep when the gang thought Frasier was seriously ill. I thought I heard a voice say welcome to Chicago when the plane landed. Just wondered if he was just taking a trip, or decided to go be with Charlotte.

Yes, Frasier gave up his new job in San Francisco to be with Charlotte in Chicago. :)

Actually they kind of left it open-ended, so they didn't really say what happened. The episode ends with him talking to a woman on the plane, telling her what had happened up to that point. When the plane lands the announcement says that they are in Chicago. It's annoying not knowing what really happened but it's wonderful for people like myself (and many of my other Frasier friends!) who are fan-fiction writing addicts! :)
Personally I like to think that he went to visit her and then eventually she agreed to move to San Francisco with him. But either way, I'm glad he ended up with her because she was my favorite of all the women he dated.

My bad! I thought that since he landed in Chicago that meant he was giving up his job in San Francisco to be with Charlotte . Color me embarrassed.
born2late 10-16-2011, 12:12 AM I was wondering if it was one of those "make the ending whatever you want" kind of endings. My Frasier happy ending is Frasier and Charlotte in San Francisco together. I was discussing this with the bf a little while ago, and he was kind of lost also, but we're both blondes. :D Thanks for the replies. I was starting to think I was hearing things.
Perhaps Frasier would have struggled in Chicago with odd jobs out of his relm. Charlotte would have seen what he was going through to be with her and maybe she would decide to move her business to San Francisco.
Kristen 10-16-2011, 03:28 AM Personally, I like that the ending was left open to interpretation. And as Andrea already pointed out, it does make for some interesting possibilities as far as fanfiction. And I know that several of us here have taken advantage of that fact, too. I think that, whether he ended up in Chicago or San Francisco, Frasier should definitely be with Charlotte. B/c after going through so many different women for 11 years (not to mention the women he was with in Boston!), it's about time he finally found someone to settle down with again. And after all, he wouldn't have to look any farther than his own younger brother to find an example of what true love looks like. (Yes, I did just bring a post about Frasier's love life around to N/D! Couldn't help myself! ;) )

Leigh Ann 10-16-2011, 10:56 AM I love the finale, and it always makes me want to tear up, even though I don't get emotional at stuff. I always like to think that no matter where Frasier ended up, he's with Charlotte, like Kristen said. And maybe that they decided to move back to Seattle eventually, like I have them doing in one of my stories I'm still writing. :) I would think it would kill Frasier to be so far away from N/D's kids and even Martin. Not to mention Nervosa!
born2late 10-16-2011, 12:01 PM Perhaps he was going to Chicago to propose to Charlotte. I think after seeing his brother and father happy, he didn't want to lose his chance with Charlotte.

Cool. I never thought of that. ;)

Exactly! After seeing what almost happened to N/D when Niles waiting until literally the last minute, he must have thought he needed to do whatever he had to do to be w/ Charlotte.
bingbangbaby 10-17-2011, 04:38 PM I think so too. Not sure he would have proposed immediately, and it seems more within his character to go there without a real plan and let things happen as they will simply because he wanted her to know how important she was to him and that he didn't want to lose her, but my guess is that he basically had no intention of being anywhere that she wasn't at that point. I also agree with the person who said that he'd have a hard time being so far away from the rest of the gang in Seattle. After 10 years of making up for lost time with Martin and Niles, and having such a close friend in Roz, having Daphne finally become the family member she always seemed to be from the start, plus a new nephew and probably more nieces and nephews in the future? I can't see him being as far away as Chicago for very long. And, speaking from experience, it's really difficult to be very far away from your parents the older they get too-- especially the closer you are to them.
And now I hope you all don't shoot me... it really makes no difference to me whether he permanently ended up with Charlotte or not (sorry!). I think that's because we just barely knew her and really, so did Frasier, and I think he was going to Chicago more to see about possibilities. And since Chicago was her hometown (wasn't it?) it seems not very fair to ask her or want her to go back toward Seattle with him unless she really had no family of her own there. I liked Charlotte okay, but at the point that it was left for us, I didn't quite get the feeling that she was particularly his "soul mate" the way that Daphne was for Niles, and that's probably because the relationship was so new. I got the feeling that they really liked each other and that there could be the potential for something real there and that he absolutely should have gone to Chicago to pursue the relationship and see where it might go. But I can see so many issues and problems for them too, not only in location, but she was, after all, very much on the rebound. I think it would have been great for him if it developed into something more and worked out, but if it didn't, I think it would also be great for him to have gone on to San Francisco after some time, visited Seattle often as he said he would, and found his true "soul mate"-- Niles and Daphne-like -- somewhere there. ;)
But Charlotte was the only lady he chased after. At leastm to that extent. But good points.
bingbangbaby 10-19-2011, 02:01 AM Well that's true. I guess I feel like that right person always seems to have something extra special there right from the start, small as it might be-- at least in TV Land, anyway  -- some kind of special chemistry, whether it be a special friendship or love at first sight or even anger/hatred-- and I didn't think I saw anything like that with the two of them. It seemed to me like that relationship looked very much like so many others that he'd had that didn't work out. But then again, I do remember in the season opener he spoke with Niles at Nervosa and they talked about his pattern of messing it up when things started to get serious ("commit to committment" ), and Niles rattled off all those names of the women who had seemed right for Frasier but he had failed relationships with. So I suppose the fact that he actually went after Charlotte, along with his speech to the family saying he wanted what they had might be a sign that he was finally ready to commit, and that this would be the one that worked out. That literally just occurred to me as I write this.
But I'm still glad it's open to our own interpretation because I don't like to think he'd go (and stay) so far away from his family after all the time he'd put into getting closer to them.
Schmoopie 10-20-2011, 01:01 AM Okay you guys are inadvertently killing me with all these ideas because I have a Frasier/Charlotte story on my endless list of Frasier fan fics to write, so I'll be sure and mention all these great ideas (in exchange for some readings of course! I know... I'm terrible, aren't I?) in an author's note!
But Andress I wasn't trying to undermine you at all since like Kristin said, they never actually said what happened to Frasier so any of those ideas are possible.
andress_jade 10-20-2011, 01:18 AM I just love how quickly the subject of this post changed from the original topic!

My fault... sorry..
Kristen 10-20-2011, 01:54 AM Do you think you even have to ASK me to read your story, Andrea? :) I'm practically the president of your fan club (well, self-appointed, anyway!). I'm so thrilled to hear you have a Frasier/Charlotte story in the works. I mean, I knew that already, but it's nice to hear you haven't forgotten about it!
Family Ties Forever! 10-20-2011, 02:09 PM Here are the final words of Goodnight Seattle.
Passanger on plane: I think it's great what you're doing.
Frasier: I just know I would always regret it, if I didn't take the chance.
Pilot: Welcome to Chicago.
[pause]
Frasier: Wish me luck.

I agree. I think it would have been hard for Frasier to be away from Seattle and everyone there.
