View Full Version : Swearing?
Miss Lisa 09-11-2011, 02:24 PM Some people couldn't care less if the person they're talking to cusses left and right while some people cringe everytime they hear a four letter word. Which one are you?
I personally, don't find much of a problem with it. To me, they are simply just words. I will swear when I'm with friends or with people who I know don't care, but if I'm with family or a certain places I will saty away from it.
Janice 09-11-2011, 04:36 PM I swear when I'm pissed, but only with certain people. I don't like potty mouths who can't get through a thought without swearing. It depends on the level of profanity too. We all know the real nasty words. I can do without that. There's a time and a place for everything, and people who swear a lot should know when to put a lid on it.
MrCleveland 09-11-2011, 05:11 PM I don't swear around certain people (My parents, for example). But I may swear behind everyone's backs if I was pissed.
tiredmike59 09-11-2011, 05:17 PM I don't swear, I swear.
Mr. Television 09-11-2011, 05:22 PM I don't mind mild swearing but I hate gutter talk. I rarely swear. In fact I think I swear more on SO then I ever do in my real life. lol We never swore in my house growing up and it's really not me.I don't really care if people do it when they're with a group of friends in private but when they're out in public talking loud like that, it does bother me.
Retro4Life 09-11-2011, 05:52 PM I try not to swear too often, but I do it when I'm really angry. In general, it's an inelegant way to express yourself, and there are far more creative ways that don't potentially offend someone or signal one's own limited vocabulary.
The laxness in regard to swearing is just one more way we're all becoming coarser as a society, and it's regrettable to me.
catlover79 09-11-2011, 05:53 PM I rarely cuss, and I can't stand being around people whose every third word is a cuss word. It has to do with my faith, upbringing, and the fact that I think swearing is just bad manners. Again, that's just me.
Fleet 09-11-2011, 06:30 PM I don't. I find it rude, crude and vulgar. Unfortunately, it's almost at an epidemic level these days. I heard one guy talking at a car show; every other sentence was a swear word and he sounded like a complete idiot. I would never have someone like that as a friend (and he probably doesn't have many friends).
My vocabulary is large enough to be able to convey what I want to say without stupid swear words.
That is one reason I like to watch '60s TV shows, like "Bewitched," "Star Trek," "Get Smart," "Bonanza," etc. I know I will only hear English and I can watch it with anyone... friends, family members, etc.
andress_jade 09-11-2011, 07:57 PM I hate swearing. I think it's rude, disrespectful, immature and stupid to be a trash mouth. I rarely ever swear. There are so many better things to say than swear words. I was raised around it for part of my childhood and it made me sick even then. That's a lot of the reason I don't do it a whole lot now. I heard things that I shouldn't have heard at my age, or at any age.
I used to work with some people that every other word out of their mouth was f this or f that. The f word is probably the one swear word I loathe most. It actually makes me cringe every time I hear it. I complained about it so much before I quit but they never did anything about it.
I am a Christian and that's another reason why I find swearing so offensive. It's considered a sin and an abomination against God to use swear words, especially ones that have God in them.
Sadly, there is more and more of it in this day and age. People are just too lazy to care anymore. :(
Brieannas21 09-11-2011, 07:57 PM In my earlier days, I use to curse like a sailor, but nowadays I don't really curse anymore since I do have small children and they will emulate what you do. Now if someone really pisses me off then I might let a few words fly, nothing too extreme. It does irritate me when a person curses to the point to where every other word out of their mouth is a curse word.

I feel the same way as Monika and for the same reasons. And like Retro4Life and Tony (Fleet) I think people who swear a lot are revealing how limited their vocabulary is.
JamesG 09-11-2011, 08:05 PM Swearing doesn't bother me. Like others said it also depends on who I'm around when using it; swearing isn't a part of my regular vocabulary however.
As far as movies/tv go the only thing that I don't like is excessive swearing for the sake of "just having it" when it has no real relevance to the plot or anything else.
Crimson and Clover 09-11-2011, 09:35 PM Swearing doesnt bother me. I probably do it way too much. However I know when not to use it and if Im around someone who doesnt swear then I wont either.
HuntingtonM15 09-11-2011, 09:44 PM Swearing doesnt bother me. I probably do it way too much. However I know when not to use it and if Im around someone who doesnt swear then I wont either.
Same here.
Family Ties Forever! 09-11-2011, 10:32 PM I rarely use bad language. I don't like swear words, but understand that some people might. I prefer movies, tv shows and books that have little or no bad words.

Great post.
It's truly a shame than in modern "civilized" society, swearing is not only accepted but practically encouraged. Sad, indeed.
catlover79 09-12-2011, 12:19 AM Amen!!!!!
Jaqui-Michel 09-12-2011, 01:52 AM Not a big swearer but there are times or discussions where words like the "F" word are required as an noun, adjective or verb to get your points and thoughts across more effectively. I make it a point not to swear in front of elders or children.

No, it's never required, nor acceptable, IMO.
I can get my thoughts across very effectively without using vulgar words. I make it a point not to swear in front of anyone.
Zoneboy 09-12-2011, 03:56 AM Not a big swearer but there are times or discussions where words like the "F" word are required as an noun, adjective or verb to get your points and thoughts across more effectively.
I think you've watched Goodfellas one time too many.
-STEFFY- 09-12-2011, 04:09 AM I hate the F word. I find swearing very classless and crude. It makes me cringe, too. I don't curse because I don't want to, and I find no reason for it. Occasionally, I might say "dammit." That's about the worst of swearing I do. It has nothing to do with religious beliefs or anything like that. I just don't like swearing as I find it needless and ignorant.
-STEFFY- 09-12-2011, 04:11 AM there are times or discussions where words like the "F" word are required as an noun, adjective or verb to get your points and thoughts across more effectively.
Most English teachers and Literature professors would disagree with you.
Waterston_Fan 09-12-2011, 11:49 AM I don't swear much but if I do, I usually try to do it alone or use a word that I don't think is offensive, like damn.
I have an elder sister who hates swearing but then she doesn't like words that are not nice. The game, L.A. Norie, there are some cases that have swear words and I can swear my sister would freak out.
But yesterday during the Charger/Viking game where Percy Harvin was running a kick off for a touchdown, I can assure you, I had some swear words I was thinking. And so did a lot of Charger fans. :D
JamesG 09-12-2011, 03:58 PM The game, L.A. Norie, there are some cases that have swear words and I can swear my sister would freak out.
I just find this to be so funny...
I've played L.A. Noire and you're saying your sis will be freaked out by the cursing. She wouldn't mind going through the parts where you have to search a woman's nude corpse that was raped and thrown off the road for clues?
I just find it funny that people freak out over bad language but there are things way worse than that.

You could say the same thing about the Browns fans, but then that happens every year.
Miss Lisa 09-12-2011, 08:32 PM You could say the same thing about the Browns fans, but then that happens every year.
Haha yess. Thats when my dad, a huge Browns fan, gets really creative with his vocabulary. I know swear words aren't supposed to be considered creative, but he can twist those words around and form some unique sentences. Lol.
He's like me though, if there are people around that can't handle it, he'll watch what he says.
Jaqui-Michel 09-13-2011, 12:12 AM I think you've watched Goodfellas one time too many.
LOL, I do love that movie.
Jaqui-Michel 09-13-2011, 01:21 AM Did any see Ron Jaworski's faux pas on Monday Night football? He used the "S" word in his commentary on Chad Henne's throw. He did apologize but he did use the word effectively. :D

No, he used it stupidly.

OH Nuts! 09-13-2011, 01:39 PM I know I'm coming into this thread late (have not been able to be on line til today. Basically, I agree with Janice. There's a time and place. 99% of the time you can express displeasure without using profanity. I always start out polite but will escalate if firm but polite responses get me nowhere.
People who think they live in Potty Central, and use profanity as every other word, come across stupid and ineffective; profane words lose their power when not used sparingly (if at all)

One time I was at her house playing True Crime on the playstation and she was yelling at me because apparently there were some bad words that she didn't like. I had to stop playing it because she was annoying me.
I had the sound turned down so it wouldn't bother anyone but that's the thing that sucks about wearing hearing aids. You might not hear it but others can. The room I was in was adjacent to the kitchen.
A few months later I rented that same game while my mom was on a cruise and since I had the sound up, I didn't realize how much bad language there was and that was in the music!

^ I'm the same way, most of my husbands family cuss a blue streak & I'm used to it & I even cuss when I get really mad. But I try to tone it down depending on who I'm around like kids, my boss, older people, etc.

I know the perfect game for you: House of the Dead: Overkill.
It's in the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Swearing in a Video Game. F word alone has 189 counts.
Janice 09-14-2011, 07:12 PM I just find it funny that people freak out over bad language but there are things way worse than that.
I've never understood that argument. There are worse things than just about anything, but this discussion is swearing. Also, some people may freak out, but most people simply don't like it.

Yes, there are worse things, but people have a right to dislike things including swear words. Also, there is a difference between not liking swear words and 'freaking out' over them.
I certainly would not want to see L.A. Noire. The violence and sexual assualt content would be too much for me. I don't want to see stuff like that.

I'm not saying people don't have the right to dislike things, I just find it amusing that people seem to put an emphasis on swearing over some other content deemed offensive -- violence for example.
I know some people who wouldn't mind going through action films with people being shot all the time, but they cringe when they hear an F-word in the film. I don't get things like this.
If you don't think you can handle something, you don't have to watch or play it.
Retro4Life 09-15-2011, 12:51 AM I think there's a lot of things I can tolerate in a work of fiction that I'm not so tolerant of in real life.
I don't care if a movie about gangsters has a lot of swearing in it, because it makes sense within the world of that movie. But that doesn't mean I want to hear it every other second in my everyday life, for the reasons I stated above.

That's pretty much how I feel. I actually liked the HBO series Deadwood and it had alot of swear words in it. I would not like to hear those same swear words constantly in real life.
MickeyMac 09-15-2011, 11:01 AM Swearing doesnt bother me. I probably do it way too much. However I know when not to use it and if Im around someone who doesnt swear then I wont either.

Coffeecup 09-22-2011, 07:28 PM I agree with Fleet. I just don't like it. To say one could use it occasionally and get away with it, is flirting with danger. For if you say one place, it may pop out in a place it shouldn't. I have heard the " it is only words", yeah I could tell you to "Go shove it" and they are words but are they kind, NO. In most places I just wince when i heard profane words, and pray no is one around me I know. I tend to think more people under say 40 swear than over 40.
I swear by the moon and the stars in the sky
and I swear like the shadow that's by your side
I see the questions in your eyes
I know what's weighing on your mind
You can be sure I know my part
Cause I stand beside you through the years
You'll only cry those happy tears
And though I make mistakes
I'll never break your heart
Chorus
And I swear by the moon
And the stars in the sky I'll be there
I swear like the shadow that's by your side I'll be there
For better or worse
Till death do us part
I'll love you with every beat of my heart
And I swear
I'll give you every thing I can
I'll build your dreams with these two hands
We'll hang some memories on the wall
And when (and when) just the two of us are there
You won't have to ask if I still care
Cause as the time turns the page
My love won't age at all
And I swear (I swear) by the moon
And the stars in the sky I'll be there (I'll be there)
I swear (and I swear) like the shadow that's by your side
I'll be there (I'll be there)
For better or worse
Till death do us part
I'll love you with every beat of my heart
And I swear
And I swear (I swear) by the moon
And the stars in the sky I'll be there (I'll be there)
I swear (and I swear) like the shadow that's by your side
I'll be there (I'll be there)
For better or worse (better or worse)
Till death do us part I'll love you
With every single beat of my heart
I swear I swear I swear
Zebra 3 09-23-2011, 03:42 PM Doesn't bother me, but on a good day I can pretend it does just for laughs.

Fleet 09-23-2011, 06:50 PM But how can you turn off your ears? You can't help but HEAR when people are swearing in your presence.
Exactly. Those of us who don't swear should not have to put up with other swearing. In a way, it's an insult to those who don't swear. Many times, people know who others who don't like swearing and they do it anyway. Definitely rude behavior.
Yooch 09-23-2011, 10:46 PM I'm not at either extreme--I think for me the context and audience is a major factor. I'm not shocked at every little word. I've heard them all. But I'm offended when I hear people cussing out loud with women and children around. It's disrespectful, and--I'm old fashioned that way.
