View Full Version : 70s 80s or 90s which has the best sitcoms ckrtpametulia 06-05-2001, 09:20 PM vote now callmetootie 06-05-2001, 09:27 PM I'd say the 80's, although many 70's sitcoms were pretty good. The 90's sitcoms S-U-C-K. ------------------ Andrew Carden ckrtpametulia 06-05-2001, 10:57 PM i dont think 90s suck what about frasier seinfield friends and will and grace Madness 06-06-2001, 01:49 AM 80's DEFINITELY. 90's are alright, late 70's are pretty good too but I think the 80's was the BEST decade ever in sitcoms. Sean Snow 06-06-2001, 10:51 AM 70s, but a lot of 70's sitcoms ran into the 80's (Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, Three's Company) So it's a tie between 70's and the 80's. ------------------ Jack: I'm surprised at you. Where would all the great women of history be if they thought like that!? Look at Joan of Ark and wht she accomplished. And, and Florence Nightengale and Madam Curry. Chrissy: And Lucretia Borzok. Janet: She posioned people. Chrissy: Yeah, but she was very goo at it. EKWROCKS 07-11-2001, 02:22 AM The 80's hands down!! 70's sitcoms were too goodie goodie and the 90's are all too hard core!! I think the80's had the perfect mix!! plus the early 90's were okay too!! TVLanFan 07-13-2001, 03:39 PM Great question...and like so many others, it may depend on when you grew up. I'm trying to think of other great sitcoms of the 80s, besides "Cheers". Facts of Life was a cute show, and I liked the girls, but it was hardly the classic that a lot of people seem to be making it these days...Different Strokes wasn't that great...what shows am I missing? I'm sure Cheers wasn't the ONLY Great 80's sitcom... Well, heck I'll check the "80s" board... Ooops, I forgot about the Cosby Show...that was good for the first few years...I enjoyed Family Ties until Andy came along...and, I did like Night Court too...I guess that's not a bad group of shows after all... I agree with several posters above that 90's sitcoms sucked for the most part, except "Seinfeld" which was fantastic! But, overall, I think the 70s was the best decade of the three...you had All in the Family (which was, IMO, a great show until Mike & Gloria moved out...that destroyed the whole premise of the show)...You had the Mary Tyler Moore Show, great for most of its run, and never really baaad...I loved the Bob Newhart Show, thought it had a great ensemble cast...I always thought MASH was overrated, but it certainly had a long and successful run...heck, I even liked Good Times, until they killed off the father. And even behind those shows, you've got the Brady Bunch, Odd Couple, One Day at a Time, Courtship of Eddie's Father (which I liked at the time, probably wouldn't now), The Jeffersons, Love American Style (see Eddie's Father)... Well, I guess it's a little tougher call than I thought...but I'll give the 70's a SLIGHT edge over the 80s...Certainly, the classics of the 70's will be around a lot longer than the classics of the 80s (since they were made 10 years earlier) :-) But I think the 70s had slightly better "depth" in their lineup. And, needless to say, the 90's finish fourth in this three team race... dawsongirl 07-13-2001, 05:49 PM I watched 80s shows growing up and now I can't stand them, 90s shows generally suck, so GO 70s!! JT 07-13-2001, 07:46 PM Originally posted by ckrtpametulia: i dont think 90s suck what about frasier seinfield friends and will and grace Those are the reasons 90's suck! The only great 90s shows are all of the Nick shows(live-action),Cooper,and Frwsh Prince. The others I could do without. Davester713 07-13-2001, 08:07 PM I have to give a tie between all 3 decades. I think that even the 90's has had a lot of sitcoms that i enjoy watching. Seinfeld Home Improvement Friends Frasier Just Shoot Me Will and Grace Jesse Mad About You Cheers(ran into 90's) Drew Carey Everybody Loves Raymond Suddenly Susan Veronica's Closet Roseanne 3rd Rock from the Sun and many others that I didn't watch, but were good. factsoflife 07-15-2001, 05:11 PM the 80's and 90's. the 80's had great shows like, Facts of life, Cheers, and Family Ties and the 90's had wonderful shows like The Nanny, Grace under Fire and Cybill. vienna waits 07-16-2001, 11:13 AM 80s by far had the best sitcoms!!!!!! LUCILLE BALL 07-16-2001, 12:56 PM I would have to say he 1980's there were soo many big hits. Like The Cosby show< The Golden Girls, The FActs of Life and Different Strokes and Three's Company and Cheers were from the late 70's but were Just as big in the 80's. The Gameshows were the best...Super Password, Hollywood Squares, Love Connection. But that is what I remember..when Joan rivers was the host of Tonite Show for a while, The Wavy Hair styles. The 80's by far...although I loved Here's Lucy..That was from the 70's. ------------------ I am happpy I have brought laughter because i have been shown by many the value of it...in so many lives in so many way>.....Lucille Ball 1989 Swimfan85 07-16-2001, 09:43 PM 80s!!!!!!!!! i mean 70's and 90's werent bad but 80's had quality sitcoms, im sick of all these reality show crap!but some shows that started in the 80's but ended in the 90s were good, like full house and saved by the bell*good morning miss bliss* but the college years sucked, but neways go 80s! ------------------ Jinny: Basically people are who people are. I also have a TC spin-off called "College Company." WEB SITE: www.geocities.com/stooge321/T.html Joyce DeWitt, if you are reading these things that i post, i want to say that i love you and i hope to meet you *Jacob* Adamantium 02-07-2003, 02:37 AM Okay, I know this is an old post, but I read it, and wanted to reply. I think The 90's were the best. The 70's had the most groundbreaking sitcoms, which I can't really stand. I hate the 80's sitcoms except for Perfect Strangers and ALF. The 90's gave us my favorite show "NewsRadio". Also, Wings, Boy Meets World, Ned and Stacey, Step By Step, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Ellen. Three'sCompanyrules 02-07-2003, 02:39 AM I would have to say the 70'S AND THE 80'S. James 02-07-2003, 02:47 AM The 1970s were the best among the three, by far. There are only two shows I still watch today from the 1980s and 1990s (not counting the Brady spinoffs)--Perfect Strangers and The Wonder Years. In the 1970s one could enjoy The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Taxi, and The Waltons during their years of production. Of course, all but one of those shows were still being made during the 1980s. TVgen62 02-07-2003, 06:09 AM I must vote for the 70s, since my favorite shows are of that decade (see profile), although I can't completely rule out the 80s. During the 70s, there were 3 networks and cable wasn't widely available for most of the decade. And yet, every channel had something good to watch almost every night. It was difficult for me to decide what to watch and what to miss! (No VCR, yet.) :( Now there are anywhere from 100 - 400 channels, depending on type of service, and there's NOTHING TO WATCH! A few shows start out on a promising note and quickly lose my interest. (Pssst! Many just rehash stories and ideas from older shows.) Give me oldies/classics (on TV Land, for example) and documentaries (Discovery, History Channel, etc.), but bag the 90s. *PinkLady* 02-07-2003, 07:20 AM The 70's and 80's. Most of my favorite shows come from those decades. RollerGirl 02-07-2003, 08:04 AM I'm torn between the 70s and 80s...I'm gonna have to go with the 80s  ClassicTV4Ever 02-07-2003, 08:59 AM The 70's and 80's tie. A lot of great shows came out of those decades. The only shows in the 90's I like are the ones that premiered in the early 90's, like Step By Step, Fresh Prince, Home Improvement, Grace Under Fire, and some short-lived sitcoms like Nurses and The Mommies. What I think sucks about late 90's to today's sitcoms is that they are too hardcore and so not funny. All I have to say is thank goodness for Game Show Network, N@N, TV Land, and TV shows on DVD. Brian Damage 02-07-2003, 04:37 PM The 70's and 80's were both very good decades for sitcoms. If I'm forced to choose, I'd say the 80's. Central Perk 02-07-2003, 05:00 PM I'd have to say the 80's, I think overall there were a lot of good sitcoms. The 90's had great sitcoms too. *InThisMoment* 02-07-2003, 06:40 PM 70's and 80's because I like happy days and diffrient strokes. happy days started in the 70's and ended in the 80's so did diffrient strokes so it's a tie between 70's and 80's Pitooey 02-07-2003, 09:56 PM 70's Cactus Jack 02-07-2003, 11:57 PM 70s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fleet 02-09-2003, 01:42 AM I vote for the '60s! So many good shows, it would have been a problem what to watch (because many were on at the same time)... Bewitched, Gomer Pyle, Andy Griffith Show, Gilligan's Island, I Dream Of Jeannie, Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, F-Troop, That Girl, Get Smart, Flipper, Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Brady Bunch, etc. I like the '70s very much, too. Again, there was a lot to choose from. SBTB Geek 02-09-2003, 05:22 PM 80's. Sitcomwriter 02-09-2003, 06:30 PM The 90's and 2000's had the best sitcoms! Tuesday Weld 02-09-2003, 06:52 PM I would have to say the 70's:D CollegeGirl 02-09-2003, 09:40 PM My favorite decade for sitcoms was the 70's. The 50's/60's tie for second favorite. I just enjoy watching/studying the classics. I watch the old shows for acting techniques. They just seem to have more pizzaz to me. I don't know why. David 02-12-2003, 06:20 PM 70's! Happy Days Threes Company All In the Family Laverne and Shirley Different Strokes What more can u ask for AMackII 06-22-2019, 07:53 AM My Opinion, 70s & 80s principehomura 06-22-2019, 10:25 AM 90s: Frasier, Roseanne, Friends, Seinfeld, The Nanny, Mad About You, Home Improvement, Married with Children... theoneandonlytvqueen 06-23-2019, 12:24 AM Maybe it's because I'm born in that decade. But i'd have to say the 80's. Crusinforabrusin2.5 03-17-2020, 09:14 PM The 70s had the most depth of good TV shows. You had your Norman Lear shows and other good ones like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, What's Happening, and Laverne and Shirley. The 80s were light on good sitcoms. Cheers is the only one I like from this decade. 90s had Seinfeld, Frasier, and Mad About You. Full House and Family Matters are OK. Roseanne was good too. MA 03-18-2020, 07:35 AM Tough one, but I'm going to have to pick all three. stevea 03-19-2020, 08:49 AM That's tough! The easiest one to eliminate is the 80s. MA 03-19-2020, 08:53 AM That's tough! The easiest one to eliminate is the 80s. Why would you eliminate the 80s? merlinjones 03-19-2020, 09:56 AM The 60s of course had the best ever and forever, but those aren't offered here, so.. It would have to be the 70s because there is nothing as funny (and still funny) as Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart to be found in the 80s or 90s -- the only later shows in that league (for me) would be Seinfeld 90s and Cheers 80s (maybe Friends 90s and Golden Girls 80s, but those were not executed on such an intelligent level of humor). And love him or hate him there was the earth-shaking Norman Lear and zeitgeist rider Garry Marshall. The problem for me for the 80s is that there were more dreckish videotape sitcoms I truly detest in that decade than any other (Different Strokes, Facts of Life, Love Sidney, Alf, Small Wonder, and related army of awful "preachy/huggy" shows). stevea 03-19-2020, 11:00 AM Why would you eliminate the 80s? There are several good sitcoms from the 80s, but I think there are more from the 70s and 90s. Tubehead 03-20-2020, 12:41 PM sorry double post Tubehead 03-20-2020, 12:49 PM I grew up in the late 1980s to earlier 1990s!!
