View Full Version : When were "The Good Old Days"?? I must have missed 'em
cleverfun3000 09-03-2011, 12:41 PM I truly cannot remember a time in the past 4 decades that wasn't described as "tough times". At no point did anyone say "Hey! These times are Great! It's Magnificent how the economy's going! Everybody who wants a job has one and the country is at the very top of it's game!" No. I know I don't remember anything even remotely like that. Each year for the past 40 people have always, always said "We are living in tough times". So when the heck were the "Good ole Days"??
MrCleveland 09-04-2011, 11:38 PM I think it was childhood, but Otto Bettmann made it perfectly clear in one book....
dakert 09-04-2011, 11:52 PM The good old days were from 1946-1979
Marvo301 09-05-2011, 12:20 AM The good old days began with the end of World War 2 and lasted into the 1970's.
tiredmike59 09-05-2011, 12:38 AM The good old days were when we wore animal skins, lived in caves and beat each other over the head with clubs. There were no taxes, insurance companies or politicians. As long as you had the biggest club, you had no worries.
Mr. Television 09-05-2011, 02:11 AM I don't think you know you're living in the good old days until they're long gone.
Nighthawk76 09-06-2011, 07:04 PM I think Sonny makes an excellent point when he said that we don't know the good old days while we're actually living them. I tend to look back at the late 80's and early 90's as being "the good old days" though I'm sure I didn't think so at the time. We often don't appreciate what we have while we actually have it.

So true...

MickeyMac 09-07-2011, 05:23 PM Anyday above ground (past or present) is a good ole day.

Hilarious comment!!!
I hate how people imply if you dislike something new, it's due to nostalgia.
Sometimes things suck period.
For example, I'm getting tired of the obsession with electronic dance music. I don't hate dance music but I just hate the current incarnation because it so obviously sounds cheap and as if little or no effort was put into it.

I've got to disagree. I don't think the good old days really ever existed. I think we just con ourselves into believing that an earlier time was "the good old days."
comedyfreak 09-09-2011, 05:34 AM For me the good ole days were growing up during the late 60's-80's. When you're a kid you really want for nothing everything is given to you no responsibilities or worries. I miss that time of my life with my parents, going to school, vacations in the summer, the Holidays, home cooked meals, visiting my Grandmother, going on cookouts at parks, etc.
Penny Lane 09-09-2011, 04:32 PM For me it was the 1970's. My kids were little and life was very good for our family. Plenty of food and money. Some of tv's best sitcoms were airing then.I was in my 20's And the music was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE the 70's!

Are you kidding? There are plenty of things to worry about when you're a kid, even if they're not always the same thngs you worry about as an adult.

That's for sure! When I was about 9 I remember constantly checking my heart to see if it was still beating! I had just been to a funeral of an aunt and I guess I thought I would be next! I got over that quickly though.:)

Yes, but there is an important difference.
When you are a child your worries are "buffered" by your parents, grandparents, etc. You have someone (or should have had someone) who would ultimately allow you to keep on living and enjoying life while they made the tough decisions and slayed the dragons for you. When you get older, it's up to you to slay those dragons. And to slay the dragons for your children, if you have any. Plus, you have to deal with your own impending mortality.
That's how life is and has to be, but it doesn't make it any less bittersweet.

I was worried about being attacked by other kids as school and punished by teachers for defending myself. I was worried that I'd never reach the milestones that everybody else goes through in life. I was worried that junk scientists were conning every parents all over the world into thinking TV was turing us kids into monsters who were going to destroy civilization. I was also worried that God was going to punish all kids for not living up to the expectations of our parents, until I became a teenager and realized it was just mankind using God as an excuse to conquer people's free will.

What if those same adults are the dragons, and they keep you from enjoying life? The way I see it, the only real difference is the lack of concern for monsters in the closet.
