View Full Version : So sad that these LOST SITCOMS of the 70's gets no Cable or DVD Exposure
TVFactFan 08-08-2011, 05:42 PM Out of these 5 Lost 70's sitcoms, I have only seen one on Cable and the rest were local or Comcast Demand
Maude-just continues to fail in syndication and now only airs on Antenna TV on Saturday and Sunday with only one DVD release
Chico and the Man-Brief exposure in 2002 on TV Land and nothing since then with no DVD releases
One Day at a Time-On Cable in the 90's and seen mainly in the Chicago area and on Comcast On Demand in 2004 with only one DVD release
Alice-briefly shown on ION and never on Cable atleast not since 2000 with no DVD releases
Welcome Back Kotter-Shown on TV Land in 2002 and no cable exposure since with only one DVD release
Would love see this sitcoms on cable some day rather rather than the same reran shows over and over. Maybe there can be a DVD set release in the future with all these shows titled "Lost Sitcoms of the 70's"
LOL
Marvo301 08-08-2011, 06:37 PM These are all shows I watched in their original runs. (Yes, I'm that old!!) I'd love to see them back on TV or on DVD!
Pavan 08-08-2011, 07:14 PM You still have Maude weekdays until mid-September! And it is in its second run already.

And Alice and One Day at a Time are long running sitcoms that has not gotten any cable exposure-lol They lasted longer than
Good Times
Sanford and Son
And the same length as
The Jeffersons
All in the Family

Then it's only 4 airings a week right?
Pavan 08-08-2011, 08:29 PM Yes, starting in the Fall Sat 7-8pm and Sun 6-7pm.

What run is Good Times and Sanford and Son in?
Pavan 08-08-2011, 09:13 PM I think the same. All three have been airing six days a week since January.

I'm going to see ifi t's on youtube
dlemond 08-08-2011, 11:51 PM They release the most unpopular, least likely to sell tv DVDs all the time.
I am still shocked that Welcome Back Kotter has not had all it's seasons released.
Beyond the obvious John Travolta link, it is a major nostalgia show. More so than a show like Alice that lasted a lot longer.
No clue why all the shows mentioned don't have more releases.

Maude was seen locally on some local affiliated stations in the 80's.
One Day was seen on my local affiliated FOX 44 station in 1988 and maybe in the past. It aired during the summer of 88' and then was replaced with Mary Tyler Moore. It didn't get past season three. That was the morning. The afternoon, WGN 9 would air One Day at a time at 2:30 E/T during the summers in the late 80's and early 90's along with Welcome Back Kotter. I would babysit myself by watching WGN. Kotter aired on USA weekdays at 5:30pm E/T during the summer of 1991 and then early weekend mornings around 5:00am E/T.
ONE DAY also aired on TBS for about seven months and then was pulled from the schedule from its 6:35pm slot in 1989. In 1988-1989, Alice aired locally on my NBC affiliated WXFL/WFLA 8 in Tampa @ 12:30. (I was mad because they wouldn't air scrabble. LOL.) TBS was also airing Alice as well right around this time and it was later pulled. E aired Alice from 1995-1997 while One Day aired from 1995-1998.
Some of these netwoks did try. I'll give them that.

Shame TV Land never tried except for the show Maude
ThomasE 08-09-2011, 01:53 AM Actually, you are right, Solomon. They did try with Welcome Back Kotter in 1996. It came to NAN in June 1995. It was pulled and moved to TV Land in March or April 1996.

It was on TV Land in August of 2002 to the end of the year
IllinoisTVFan 08-12-2011, 06:12 PM I'm not saying this is true or not, but maybe those shows have failed in syndication? I have heard that Kotter originally did well in syndication until it got to its last season. Since it didn't last all that long compared to many shows (4 seasons, I believe)and since the last season isn't really that popular with the loss of both Gabe Kaplan and John Travolta I can sort of see why stations don't play it, though I'd like to see it again since it was funny.
I have a sneaky suspicion that most of those shows are just dated now. I've noticed in general that shows that tend to do the best don't seem as stuck as in its time as others (ie topics to that specific period). I think one reason shows like the Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy and the Brady Bunch do well in syndication is because they rarely touched on then current topics. I know there are exceptions to this (All In The Family for example)but it just seems something I notice.

I know 3 of the shows did bad in syndication which is why they are the lost sitcoms of the 70's. I witnessed Alice being yanked from the ION schedule in 2007 due to low ratings

There was a time that networks considered shows that would do well in syndication hence their long runs. Some producers had syndication in mind when producing the shows thus their successes others made material that became dated and lowered the value. With so many newer shows that can get instant ratings after cancellation, networks just chose them. TVLand even started airing more 'recent' shows such as Roseanne and The Nanny. Back in the day, the 'recent' shows were reserved for the new Nick at Nite. I am surprised to see the treatment of Welcome Back Kotter as the show that aired before it during the original run, Whats Happening, kicked ass in syndication, even doing better than it did during its initial run.

The Nanny belongs on Lifetime
Mr. Television 08-13-2011, 06:08 PM Alice and ODAAT were syndicated quite alot in the 1980's. Then they just disappeared. ODAAT actually aired on weekday afternoons for quite a few years in the late 70's and early 80's on CBS. I remember watching it when I came home from school.
