View Full Version : Sad Songs
tv star collector 07-30-2011, 08:10 AM Some songs are real "tear-jerkers." I'm not usually a very emotional person, but, if I'm alone and hear one of these songs, I haven't gotten through it with dry eyes yet:
"Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast" - Wayne Newton
"Old Shep" - Elvis Presley
"Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?" - Alan Jackson
These are some of the songs that really tug at my heartstrings. Who else has heard a song that literally makes you cry?

catlover79 08-01-2011, 02:49 PM "Tears in Heaven" - definitely. "Cinderella" by Steven Curtis Chapman is another - written about his daughter who died shortly thereafter in an accident. :(
Retro4Life 08-01-2011, 03:57 PM "Everything I Own" by Bread
"Yesterday" by the Beatles
"Tears In Jupiter" Train
They get me...every time.
MrCleveland 08-01-2011, 04:00 PM Since we mentioned Elton John, here's two sad songs from him....

Retro4Life 08-01-2011, 04:09 PM Many Christmas songs are quite sad. "White Christmas" is very sad, especially the line about "just like the ones I used to know..."
And "Merry Christmas, Darling" by the Carpenters...ahh...heavy sigh.
And while I don't think it's intended to be sad, I have always found "The Christmas Song" ("Chestnuts Roasting...") to be a real tearjerker.
andress_jade 08-01-2011, 04:27 PM "Everything I Own" by Bread
"Yesterday" by the Beatles
"Tears In Jupiter" Train
They get me...every time.
The song is actually called Drops of Jupiter but I feel the same way. It really tugs at me. I have it on CD and on my MP3 player. It's one of my favorites.
catlover79 08-01-2011, 04:29 PM Another song which is so sad in its irony is John Lennon's "(Just Like) Starting Over". Here he was, after a five-year hiatus from show biz, poised for a MAJOR comeback - when that hateful creep who shall remain nameless gunned him down. The song itself is so optimistic, which just makes it (in light of everything that was to come) even sadder. :(
Dr. Jazz 08-02-2011, 01:01 AM I Can't Make You Love Me - Bonnie Raitt (can't believe no one's mentioned this one yet)
This Used to Be My Playground - Madonna
A Song for Donny - The Whispers (tribute to Donny Hathaway)
Grandpa (Tell Me 'bout the Good Ole Days) - The Judds
Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnnie) - Elton John
Dreams - Allman Brothers / Dreams I'll Never See - Molly Hatchet (excellent cover of Dreams)
Sailing - Christopher Cross
Hold on My Heart - Genesis
Seasons Change - Expose
Meet Me on the Moon - Phyllis Hyman (Ms. Hyman committed suicide a few years after recording this. Prophetic maybe?)
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Brad Russ 08-02-2011, 06:50 PM In The Living Years - Mike & The Mechanics
Dance With My Father - Luther Vandross
Man In The Mirror - Michael Jackson
Leave The Light on - Beth Hart
Hold Me Jesus - Rich Mullins
Asleep In The Light - Keith Green
Ask Me - Amy Grant
The Icicle Melts - The Cranberries
Brick - Ben Folds Five
Everything's Gonna Be Alright - Naughty By Nature
UMFaninMD 08-02-2011, 08:43 PM Michael Jackson - Earth Song
Enya - May It Be and her version of Silent Night
Fall in the Light - Lori Carson
Adiemus - Adiemus
The Power of Goodbye - Madonna
When I Get Where I'm Going - Brad Paisley with Dolly Parton
And even though it only lasts a minute, Miriam Stockley singing the opening verse to Wishing on a Star from the TV miniseries The Tenth Kingdom has a sadness about it. I wished she would have done a full-length version of the song because her voice is amazing.

In the process of watching all of yours, and MrCleveland's videos. Thanks for sharing, I'm sure I will enjoy them!

Great ones Monika!!! I remember sobbing when SCC sang Cinderella at the 2009 Dove awards. He couldn't even open his eyes, because he would have started crying. Everytime they would cut to his wife, the waterworks would just flow from my eyes. Here's a video of it, incase you, or anyone else wants to check it out. :)

Schmoopie 08-03-2011, 04:52 AM One song that probably isn't meant to be sad but that I find sad is "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" by Christina Aguilera and Ricky Martin. I found it when I pulled up a Niles/Daphne video on Youtube and if you listen to the words, it's heartbreaking in a way. It's about telling someone that they don't have to be lonely when that person is there waiting to love them.
Brad Russ 08-03-2011, 05:56 AM This one is incredibly sad. It has to do with a couple who are dealing with the pain, sadness, and confusion couples often go through after having an abortion. Neither a pro, or anti abortion song, just one couples heartache. One of the saddest songs you will EVER hear.
Ben Folds Five - Brick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt5EHAqhR1c&ob=av2e)
Reverend Jim 08-03-2011, 05:48 PM http://i52.tinypic.com/2r6npcz.jpg
This song is a real account of an abortion Ben Folds and his girlfriend got when they were in high school.
Wt5EHAqhR1c
EDIT: I see Brad already mentioned it. Still, it's a very powerful song once you know what it's about.
Another sad song is "Keep Me In Your Heart" by Warren Zevon. He wrote and recorded it while he was dying from terminal cancer.
