I am just curious why this show ended? I read somewhere that Lucy quit and just retired, but I am not 100% sure that is accurate.

It probably would have been the last season anyway cancelled or not. Lucille Ball was planning on ending the series after the 5th season, but Fred Silverman talked her into a 6th season.
