View Full Version : Anybody Else Find The Father/Son Relationship Between Lamont & Fred A Little Weird?!
Brian Damage 07-16-2011, 11:28 PM Lamont always asked his dad to make him breakfast or get him something to eat like it was his girlfriend or wife. He also scolded his Dad like a child at times.

Cloud9 Lorraine 07-17-2011, 09:56 AM Yes, I found it a bit odd. I guess the premise being that Lamont did all the outdoor work -- bringing stuff home to sell and the heavy lifting, while Fred took care of the indoor work, such as housework (!), cooking, and "coordinating"
mstewart 07-17-2011, 10:06 AM There was a lot of co-dependency between those two.

Very Odd, asking another grown man to make you dinner. I have to agree

Esther Rolle said in the interview I linked in November 1975, she couldn't relate to Sanford & Son because she couldn't understand a 33 year old man hanging on to his Dad's apron strings. lol

Why do you say that?

Without Lamont's strong back, the business would go belly up. It was obvious he aspired to do more than deal in junk, but he stuck around for his dad's business. It wasn't too much for him to expect that Fred would have a meal ready at the end of the day.

Yet she wanted a TV to watch Redd Foxx while she was in the pricey hospital.
comedyfreak 07-26-2011, 05:50 AM Fred never wanted to let go of Lamont and wanted him to stay forever and would play the guilt trip card if he thought Lamont would leave. Fred was able to cook and take care of the house since he was retired.
digicashceo 05-28-2022, 10:06 PM I agree Lamont was a grown man. BUT! Fred was his FATHER! I am 49 with grown kids: daughter 33, son 31 and my youngest son 22. I cook dinner when my two oldest come to visit. My wife rarely cooks (lol) so me and my 22 year old take turns. But Lamont IS grown but as I said before Fred is still his Pops. If I'm alive and my kids live to be 100 they will STILL be my little girl and my two little boys. Peace
TheLittleFaerie 05-31-2022, 03:47 AM I don't see it as odd, they had a PARTNERSHIP in the business.... Fred did the indoor work, Lamont did the outdoor. Also apparently Fred was not totally able to live on his own, so Lamont sorta took care of him... So if Lamont was out in the hot sun, doing heavy lifting, etc.... and providing for Fred, I think it was reasonable for him to expect Fred to have a meal waiting for him, and keep the house decent.
Plus Fred freaked out if Lamont even HINTED that he was moving out, so Fred was just as dependent on Lamont as ppl make Lamont out to be on Fred
MIKEPR 06-07-2022, 02:35 PM I think some of you are making a big deal out of nothing.
It's just a show.
Were you and others around at the time S&S was in production?
Are there any other shows back then or even now that are strange in their own way?

Not necessarily.
Fred could have hired someone else especially if he and Elizabeth ended up not having any kids.
Chocolate Moose 06-08-2022, 02:41 PM I was a kid back then
MIKEPR 06-08-2022, 08:15 PM So what else is new?

We know it's "just a show" but the purpose of the message board is to DISCUSS the show.... You could literally respond to every discussion thread with, "Who cares? It's just a show"
Road Dog 06-21-2022, 02:56 PM I never thought the father-son relationship on Sanford & Son was weird. But the original BBC series Steptoe & Son did a better job of showing how both Albert (father) and Harold (son) contributed to running the junk business. Sanford & Son makes it look like Lamont did all the work and Fred is totally reliant on Lamont.

The only weird part was Lamont depending on him to fix breakfast. He could have went out to eat or made something on his own. That's a weird conversation between a grown son and his father
Yong Fang 06-30-2022, 08:06 AM Lamont was the only child of Fred and felt a repsonibility towards him. I dont get why he was initially so against Donna being a wife of Fred which would have freed Lamont to live his own life, except that Lamont felt Donna was taking his role. That is co-dependency.
MIKEPR 06-30-2022, 08:15 AM Uh Lamont could have gone to live in life on his own whether or not Fred remarried or not.
Plus a lot of kids, including adult children have such feeling.
Think before you say anything.

It shouldnt have mattered who his father was with at 32 years old
