View Full Version : Wonder why they never updated the video footage for the Queens area
TVFactFan 07-13-2011, 12:03 PM I found out that the footage in the opening credits was from the late 60's and surprised that it was never updated even after the show had been on the air for 6 or 7 years. I mean it was 1978 and they were still using 10 year old footage-lol
BTW: It was the same thing with Maude, opening credits was from the 60's
FanofRetroTV 07-13-2011, 04:03 PM It might not have change enought to warnnet a change.

exactly, if the neighborhood was the same, why spend money on changing it?

I wanna believe that neighborhood changed in 8 years-lol
Larry Surrell 07-13-2011, 08:15 PM I always thought the house they zoomed in on at the end of the opening was supposed to be the Bunkers house, but it didn't have a porch and the Bunker house had a big porch.

Just noticed the World Trade Center Buildings are not seen in downtown NYC which proved the footage was outdated for that time and the footage was from the 1960's.

If you see the house now it hasn't really changed all that much, I think they added siding to the house, so the house is a different color, that's about it. If you look across the street from the house there is a Cemetery.

I do remember seeing the house on this board and it's like a orange color.

No, it's more of a blue color. You can find it on Google maps. Here's the address if you want to take a look. 89-70 Cooper Ave, Queens, New York 11374

I just looked at Google maps and saw what you were talking about.
Looking at the opening credits now and it makes sense now why the camera stayed so focused on one side of the street-lol I always thought it was houses on the opposite side of the street

That is one thing that I could never do, and that is live across the street from a Cemetery. If you live across from a Cemetery your mortgage should be dirt cheap. Night of the Living Dead (the 1990 one) messed me up for life

Until the age of 7 I lived up the street from a cemetary lol

I was 9 when I went to the movies and saw Night of The Living Dead. because of that movie I could never live by, across or near a Cemetery and live a peaceful life. It would be a very creepy and depressing place to live. Believe me, I am depressed enough, I don't need any help LOL.
comedyfreak 07-26-2011, 05:44 AM It was probably cheaper to use stock footage than update it they did have a budget to stick with. I lived in my old neighborhood and it never changed until after 12 years.
biffbronson 07-26-2011, 08:02 AM Comedyfreak is right. For example, Dobie Gillis always used stock footage of city traffic that was very obviously out-of-date. The producers of these shows saved money where they could due to budget constraints.

What city was Dobie Gillis set in?
BigManMike 08-10-2011, 10:17 PM I hear that All in the Family and Maude had footage from the 60s. Now what about Good Times? Was that from the 60s too, or was that filmed later in the 70s when it took place? I also wondered about some of the places in the first two seasons of the Jeffersons. Were any of those from the 60s or were those all from the time that opening sequence was done with Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford?

How could the Jeffersons opening be from any other time period if Sherman and Isabel were in the footage?-LOL
Good Times is from the 70's
OH Nuts! 08-12-2011, 02:34 PM And the footage of the Bunker home was not even from Astoria. It was from Glendale. An entirely different neighborhood in Queens. Astoria is Northeast while Glendale is more in the lower center of Queens - not too far from the (northern) Brooklyn border.

I still can't believe that Bunker House is across the street from a cemetary lol

A considerable amount of the land area in Glendale & Maspeth is cemetary land - this is in the middle of Qns - far away from Astoria - lol - which is in NE Qns
