A Gmail address? You'd think they'd use an unsolved.com email address... but regardless, nice, so-long-as new UM doesn't butcher them (which they prob. will).

Same here. There is a long and winding road between accepting story submissions and actual production. I do remember though when the show was relaunched on SPIKE that it was mentioned that if the show did well they would consider filming new segments. I wonder if the move back to LIFETIME had something to do with the sudden interest in producing new segments?

This is great news! I too don't want to get my hopes up because there's always the possibility that they'll just put the new stories on their website and not actually film a segment. And I also hope we get a new host and format, if the show is actually produced again.

Maybe now that the show is back on Lifetime, it is getting better ratings than it got on Spike. I've always hoped they would film new episodes, so this is very encouraging.

I can think of several great story ideas (and updates, of course). Do you guys want to try to compile some ideas here, then take a vote on which ones we would most like to see aired? We could all then flood C-M with the same requests, thereby making them take notice of the popularity of certain cases.

Agreed. This is a definite step int he right direction though. I have to believe that if they are putting this out there, then they are well prepared to start filming new episodes.

Perhaps they will also get a new 1-800 number and be more likely to have new updates on old cases as well. Maybe just start re airing old ones that haven't been solved and update their status. That'd be sweet.

With no Robert Stack I'd prefer Morgan Freeman, but Farina is ok.

They need to hire Tony Todd he would make a great replacement theres only a handful of actors that would match up to Stacks spookiness,Duchnovy also wouldnt be to bad.

Are you talking like high profile or stuff lesser known? I know Unsolved Mysteries did both, but still like to get an idea of what everyone would like to see. Share some possible cases.

I live in a relatively small area myself, the only thing I can think of is that there was a couple murdered at a local Pizza place here and its never been solved. They ran the place and were closing for the night when someone arrived at the restaurant and killed them.

If you are thinking of high profile I could think of a few:

Jon Benet Ramsey
O.J.Simpson murders (Although most people think he did it its still up for debate I guess)
the mystery surrounding the authenticity of the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head............

For one of the bizarre segments, they could do The Mad Gasser of Mattoon. I know it will never actually be solved, but it's just such a wonderfully weird and intriguing story.

The Brian Schaffer disappearance would be perfect for Unsolved mysteries. As would the McStay family disappearance.

The only problem with rebooting Unsolved Mysteries is that there concept has already been picked up by other shows such as "Disappeared" and that Beth Holloway show. But I will welcome a new Unsolved Mysteries with open arms!

Jon Benet Ramsey
O.J.Simpson murders (Although most people think he did it its still up for debate I guess)

They actually did do a segment on the Jon Benet Ramsey case. UM aired it a month after the murder, so there were no reenactments in the segment.

As for the O.J. Simpson case, well, UM did a 1996 segment that focused on the debate of whether the police tried to frame OJ Simpson, which former prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi (who was interviewed in the segment) vocally disputed. But I think there would be virtually a zero percent chance of UM doing a segment on the case per se, most likely because there is far less doubt about Simpson's guilt these days than there was sixteen years ago. To me, Bugliosi's book, Outrage: The Five Reasons Why OJ Simpson Got Away With Murder, pretty much dispels any doubt that OJ Simpson was the killer.

The book includes details on the crucial pieces of evidence that were never presented in the criminal trial, such as the audio-recorded police interrogation in which Simpson made some incriminating statements, the "suicide" letter that Simpson wrote before he fled (which Bugliosi says "reeks" of guilt), and the contents found in the Bronco following the infamous chase (passport, money, and disguise).

As for possible cases for UM, I have a few ideas (two of which from my home state):

The unsolved murder of Mary Joe Frug, a prominent feminist and professor, who was stabbed to death in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 4, 1991. To this day, no motive was ever established, so it is unknown whether she had been specifically targeted or was a random victim.

The unsolved 1996 adbuction and murder of Amber Hagerman, a case that led to the creation of the AMBER Alert System.

The New Bedford Highway Killer, a Massachusetts serial killer who is believed to have killed at least nine women during the late '80s. Although there have been at least two suspects, the case is still unsolved.

I suspect that UM has been getting generally more viewership on Lifetime than on Spike, especially since Lifetime has been airing it consistently.

IMHO, a good case to do a segment on is the Holly Piirainen case.

This was a BIG story in Massachusetts back in '93. 10 year old Holly was murdered while visiting her grandparents in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The killer has never been found.

Okay yeah... Joe Pichler. he played the younger brother in "Varsity Blues".

it says he dissappeared after talking to his friend on the phone early in the morning. his car was found but his wallet and keys were gone. his Apt. door was unlocked which wasn't like him.

he was working at a Call center and was going to try to get back to his acting careeer once his braces came off.

His family believes it wasn't suicide and he was met with foul play.

I dunno what to say about this one. very strange.

They are currently asking viewers for new story submissions generating speculation that they may be eying going back into production. However as mentioned elsewhere in this thread there is a difference between possibly gauging interest in the possibility of going back into production and going back into production itself.

I submitted the Holly Bobo disappearance.

For those of you unfamiliar with her case, she is a 20 year old nursing student who went missing from the Middle TN area on April 13, 2011. Her brother saw her walking into the woods with a man dressed in camouflage. It was later surmised the man in camo was holding her at knife/gun point, and her brother was unable to see this from vantage point.

Very few details have been released.

That would make a good new story! I know he was profiled on Missing a few times (they have, or at least HAD a habit of repeating the same cases every 4 to 6 weeks). He was living in Washington no? According to what I saw, he was playing poker with friends and left pretty late at night. I think his car was found behind a fast food restaurant.....? His friends didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with his behavior. Seems like Joe just vanished. Sad.

THey definitely did not. I just read a great graphic novel about that. The Terrible Axeman of New Orleans.

It's a cool comic because it's just like a UM segment nothing fictionalized, the details of the case are just laid out in comic form.

It seems to be an obscure case in general. I lived in New Orleans for years during college and heard all the vampire lore repeated and all the ghost stories but not once did a native ever bring up the Axeman and not many even knew about it until I told them myself and I am from NY.

I am pretty sure he addressed a letter as being from hell also but I would have to double check.

It would have been nice to see a UM segment about it with Robert Stack, have him walk around the French Quarter with jazz music in the background.

Amy Bradley was the cruise ship girl right?

I just watched an episode of Vanished with Beth Holloway about her case. It was just awful what happened to her, i get the idea she could still be in slavery though. They confirmed pictures of her on an escort service website.

CHeck out the show if you are interested.

Right now Vanished is up there with my favorite true crime shows. I think Beth Holloway is an excellent host and her victim's perspective always lends alot to her take on the cases.

His sister has posted on other message boards so I'm sure that more info and a follow up could be done.

Awe! he looks like such a nice kid. :/ I realize it was the 80's but why on earth would they let their 19 year old kid travel on his own? I'm not sure what to make of the rough dude who helped fix his motorcycle. doesn't make sense he'd fix it if he was just gonna kill him. I wonder if the burly dude did fix his ride. but he was attacked by someone else after it got fixed.

I wonder if the burly dude did fix his ride. but he was attacked by someone else after it got fixed.

I asked his sister on another board if she thought the man who fixed the motorcycle could be the one who harmed him, but she was adamant that she didn't think so. I gave a theory to her that maybe David was under the impression that the man was going to fix the motorcycle for free or for a lot less than he thought, and when he didn't have that type of cash on him things got heated between them and maybe words were exchanged leading to a fight or something that turned out bad. Again, she didn't think this was the case. The problem is that this man who fixed the motorcycle has never been identified. Here are the quotes she gave on the other board and fix up a few mistakes the Charley Project website:

I'm David's sister - thank you for posting the information about his disappearance and for caring about him. To clear up some misinformation:

- David, my mother and my sister were moving from California to Massachusetts
- my mother & sister wanted to stop in Evanston, WY not Evanston, Illinois
- it's approx 60 miles from Ft Bridger, WY to Rock Springs, WY
- in the last phone call David made to my aunt, he said when his bike broke down, he had to push it to the truck stop
- he initially feared the man who fixed his bike but that after the other motorcyclist fixed his bike he thought he was OK
- the man who fixed David's bike did not charge him for the repair - there was no argument about pay
- David had blonde/light brown hair
- it wasn't 9 days before he was reported missing - it was approx that long before the sheriff's dept found his motorcycle, abandoned w/the key in the ignition

David disappeared just before his birthday, Aug 29 and it has now been 25 years since we've seen or heard from him. We love & miss him very much. Again, thank you all for your help and thank you for caring.

David was initially afraid of the man who fixed his bike. He did not approach this man - the other cyclist approached him & offered to look at his bike. He fixed it on the spot & it did not require parts or a lot of labor. David was not mechanically inclined, he didn't know what was wrong with his bike or why it was repaired so easily, without parts. He was not charged for the repair. It appeared that whatever the problem was, the stranger fixed it.

A few cases from my state, MI -

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/1893dfmi.html

Brittney Ann Beers

Abducted while playing outside her apartment building.

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/294dfmi.html

Paige Renkowski

(Did UM do this one already?) This one has a lot more info to it than what's on doenetwork. Her shoes were found in her car, which was left running, on the side of the expressway, where witnesses saw her speaking to a man. She had stopped off at a park in Canton, MI, which supposedly has been a factor in other missing persons cases. Officials received notes and maps showing where the person believed Paige's body to be buried. Within the last few months, searches went through the area but they didn't find any evidence.

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/60dfmi.html

Kellie Brownlee, one of my favorite MI cases.

She and her boyfriend took the bus to school, but she skipped class, and hitched to the mall to apply for a job. She was seen at the mall by a friend's mom, who asked if she wanted a ride home, but she wanted to stay and fill out more applications.

She had moved in with her boyfriend's family in May 1982 after telling friends that her stepfather abused her. Her friends stated that they had seen bruises on Kellie's body before she vanished. Her sister had left the state and moved in with her biological dad, also claiming abuse from the stepfather.

The boyfriend is not a suspect. The stepfather claimed he was visiting his father-in-law's grave and going to the gym on the day Kellie disappeared. (which seem like a flimsy alibi, imo) He has denied abusing Kellie and maintained he had nothing to do with her disappearance.

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/2895dfmi.html

Carolyn Sue Martin and her 2 year old son Mark.

On August 31, 1981, they were dropped off on the side of I-75, just north of Toledo, Ohio, by Mark's father.

Her family and friends had gathered the afternoon of August 31, 1981, to help her pack for an abrupt move to San Antonio. Her fiance wanted to relocate there for a job at an auto shop. The two had recently gotten engaged after years of acrimony.

Carolyn's ex had very little to do with either her or Mark before that point -- until a paternity suit ordered him to pay child support. The couple had reconciled and were looking forward to a new life together.

Within an hour after they left the metropolitan Detroit area, Carolyn reportedly told her boyfriend she didn't want to go with him to Texas anymore. The boyfriend said he then left her and Mark on the side of I-75 with a suitcase, $4,000 in cash and the clothes on their backs. Their names, DOBs and Social Security numbers have never been used.

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/753dfmi.html

Ida Dean Anderson

1958 - While her marriage was disolving, she was hospitalized with reumatic fever and ulcers. Her husband put the children in a boarding home. The state took custody of the kids, and the parents spent 6 months trying to regain their parental rights.

Ida was scheduled to receive custody of the kids and they had plane tickets to fly to her parents home in FL. She went missing, the children were adopted out to different families. The children reunited in 1995 and began searching for their mother.

The 3 Skelton boys, missing for a year, their incarcerated father not telling what he's done with them, claims they're in the custody of some kind of protective group, possible mistaken ID sightings, etc.

http://www.helpfindthemissing.org/missing_database/?p=1354

Tangena Hussain

Two y/o, went missing while being baby sat by the boyfriend (of 5 months) while mom was at work. He claimed to have left her in the car while he went inside a gas station to buy gum, on his way to pick her mother up from work. He also had left her home alone for 2-3 hours that day while he ran errands.

He showed up to the mother's work without the child. Neither the mother nor boyfriend reported the child missing until the mother's boss told her to do so.

Tangena's bio father lives in NY. His two oldest children, about 8 years old, live in Bangladesh with his parents. Tangena's mother was a teenage bride and she and her husband divorced in 2006, when she was about 22 years old. I don't know why she kept Tangena and let her former in-laws take her two oldest kids.

I just visited the UM website (11/1/11) and the line at the top of the page about accepting new stories has been removed. In your opinion, does this mean that they have received enough submissions and will begin to sift through them all to begin filming, or does this mean that, given the recent announcement that Lifetime will be airing new episodes of America's Most Wanted, UM will not be filming new stories? Any thoughts?

Either the latter, or, Lifetime said, we don't want your stinkin program, you bring us zero ratings and we hate Dennis Farina and the new version anyway. Bring back Robert Stack from the dead and we'll do the show.

I was wondering, if the show is ever brought back in an appropriate manner,
if it would have the impact on viewers the way it did in all the years that in
ran on the different networks.

UM is probably the only true crime type program whose fans are still discussing
old cases and even trying to solve cases that were originally aired 20 years ago.

IMO, there's an unusual and special quality about UM that made the fans connect
in sort of a personal way with the people who had their cases featured on that show.

Maybe they haven't completely given up on producing new stories. Not sure how long its been on there but it now says:

It is a good sign imo that they're being more specific about the type of stories they want, not just having people send them whatever.

AMW is only off the air temporarily. The show completed its first season on Lifetime - 25th season overall - in October. Although it hasn't been officially announced yet, word has it that will be back for another season.

As for UM, the authenticity of the g-mail address, is questionable. If the show were coming back with new episodes in the near future, they would have announced it by now. The lack of any official news on the matter speaks volumes.

Well shiver me timbers, I was just glancing through this thread and noticed somebody else posted about David Lovely awhile back. I had never noticed that before and was just talking about him here on SO the other day.

In response to some older posts on this thread, while the following cases were never profiled on UM, there have been hour-length episodes devoted to them on other true crime shows.

Disappeared has covered the McStays, the Jamisons, Ray Gricar, Mitrice Richardson and Lee Cutler.

The case about the newswoman found killed outside her home sounds a lot like Diane King from Battle Creek, which is in my state of Michigan. City Confidential covered that, her husband was found guilty.

Speaking of Michigan, Paige Renkowski has never been profiled on UM. This is one of the Charley Project cases that's closest to where I live, and I have driven on 96 in that area. I don't remember hearing about it back when it first happened, but I would have been barely 10 at the time. The Charley Project page says her disappearance may have been linked to three other unsolved murder/abductions in the area, and I haven't been able to find out a thing about those online. I am dying to find out more info, so please, if anyone finds out anything, please post.

and UM did cover Sabrina Aisenberg.

Wow, thank you Crystaldawn. That is the first I've heard about Beverly Wivell, and it does appear the cases are connected. It sounds like the perp(s) were impersonating a police officer.

There appears to be some discrepancies between the articles on Paige Renkoski. One says her van was in the Fowlerville area, another says the Okemos-Dewitt area. That's a little bit of a distance as there are 2 towns between Fowlerville and Okemos (Webberville and Williamston). The newer composite sketches I would guess are more accurate since the first set are all very generic and similar looking.

That one website called "Cold Cases Hard Copy" appears to have a wealth of information and newspaper articles on various unsolved cases of homicide and missing persons. I'm on vacation this week, so I'll probably be spending some time on that site researching. Just offhand, I see a boatload of articles on Michael Rosenblum and Marlena Childress.

So what was the deal with them asking for story submissions a couple years ago, then no new programs are ever made, as far as we know.

Did they ever plan to do new programs and changed their minds or are they actually working on a project?

ETA - I just went back and read through the whole thread. Last year the UM website put up a stupid email story suggestion that's still there a year later, UMnewstories@gmail.com:

Have you ever heard of a story about family members that committed a murder together? (Uh, yeah.... the Noes! You profiled them and ignored the huge update.)

I'm thinking if this is for real, it's got nothing to do with bringing UM back but is more like a lazy way for them to get stories to pitch to (some iffy) shows like Blood Relatives, Southern Fried Homicide, Behind Mansion Walls, Scorned Love Kills, Who the Bleep Did I Marry, Wives with Knives, and various Jerry Springer programs.

I think we're overlooking the impact of the network here. Lifetime is famous for movies. A lot of their original programming is in 2-hour blocks. They even have their own movie channel (LMN).

I think the request for a new story, such as the one about a family committing a murder together, is an attempt to gather information for a TV special. I think this is the future of Unsolved Mysteries. I just hope an hour long special has 3 detailed segments, and 2-hour special has 5-6. An hour long segment might be cool, but would it seem less authentic since the majority of UM episodes are 8-12 minutes in length? I think that making a segment too long would take it into territory that UM didn't cover, such as in-depth technical analysis and non-pertinent (but still related) information. It might make for a great show, but I'm not sure it would make for a great UM special.

UM was basically a drama with documentary-style segments interspersed. I hope this is the format that they continue with in any future productions.

wiseguy182

I thought this was pretty interesting, wiki has a page on "unidentified people". Not all of them are crimes and not all of them would necessarily make a full segment, but most, if not all, are really interesting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Unidentified_people

Here's a few that directly stand out for me:

The Babushka Lady ~ Lady thought to have photographed JFK's assassination. The FBI and local police made attempts to find her, but neither her nor any film she may have possessed have ever been found.

Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion ~ I thought this was really creepy, due to the masks being worn. Some people in masks, including that of Max Headroom, disrupted 2 Chicago networks including WGN. I would imagine the statute of limitations has come and gone on this one, but I think it would make a pretty eerie segment nonetheless. Bill Kurtis reported it on the Chicago news the next night.

Not really similar, but since the origin and motivation are pretty much complete mysteries, I thought of these. Also would make for a good segment, I think:

On April 10, 1988, 40-year old Diane Augat left her residence in Odessa, Florida and mysteriously disappeared. Three days later, Diane’s mother received a message on her answering machine from a woman who sounded just like her daughter. She was saying “Help, help, let me out” and “Hey, gimme that” as the sounds of someone trying to grab the phone away could be heard in the background. The caller ID read “Starlight”, but there was no answer when Diane’s mother called the number back.

Things got really morbid on April 15 when the severed tip of Diane’s right middle finger was found in the area where she was last seen. Two weeks later, a bag containing her neatly folded clothing was discovered in a convenience store’s freezer. Two-and-a-half years after Diane went missing, a local paper published a story about her disappearance. The very next day, Diane’s brother’s girlfriend happened to discover a plastic bag in another convenience store. It had the name “Diane” written on it and contained items which may have belonged to her. In spite of these bizarre clues, no other trace of Diane Augat has ever been found.

1998.

Diane's mother would have been the owner of one of the first fielded caller ID devices in the United States if it were ten years earlier.

Is this still happening or is there any information on this? I just watched a documentary about a missing girl in Vancouver named Madison Scott. She went missing in 2011 after her friend left her alone at a camping party at Hogsback Lake. This is along the Highway of Tears (Yellowhead Highway) where many young girls have gone missing or have been found dead over the years. It's an interesting case because thousands of volunteers have scoured the area where she went missing with boats, planes, and on foot but there hasn't been any evidence found.

I'm a sucker for the show. I'll watch no matter how bad they butcher it.

Agreed :)

They might want to do Holly Bobo's story with the update that her body has been found and positively identified.

This one will never be solved, but it's interesting none the less.

The victim was located in an abandoned well by a work crew that was excavating gas tanks at a convenience store, on the east side of the city near Central Avenue and 108th Street. The remains were wrapped in burlap that looked like part of a bag. There was also evidence the woman's left upper arm had been sawed off.

The woman's time of death was placed in the 20 years between 1900 and 1920 by clothing and artifacts. It's believed the victim was middle or upper class, because of the clothing, jewelry and dental work found on her body. Police also found a man's vest and pants on top of the remains, leading investigators to believe the woman might have been killed at the well. The clothing the woman had been wearing was typical of the 1908 to 1916 period. At that time, Sutherland was a railway town of about 1,000 people.

The well the woman was found in must have been abandoned at the time of her death, which suggests it happened after 1914, when Sutherland started getting water piped in from Saskatoon. In 1912, the Shore Hotel was built on the site where the remains would later be found. The building stood empty from 1919 to at least 1927.

Thought this was interesting. Found this article from a couple months ago that says this case WILL be featured on Unsolved Mysteries if it begins production again. Of course, all of us want UM to come back, I think it needs to come back so they can feature this important case. It's about an unsolved quadruple murder from 2003. This happened in a bike store in South Carolina

Curiously, one of the victims -- owner Scott Ponder -- is the son of missing person William Ponder, who is on CP

I think all of this thing, about accepting new cases was for thier new website. unsolved.com
they are putting up like short stories, less than 5 minutes long. have not watched anything yet, but its pretty interesting.

Does anyone feel there are enough discrepancies in accounts of Natalie Wood's death that it should be featured?

These cases seem to refer to UM's web only cases on their YT channel - not sure if there is a separate thread for these, but the Superbike Murders were featured on it already. I don't see anything in the stories about resuming production.

While it isn't new episodes, it is new (and somewhat frequent) activity on the part of UM. It's nice to see some completely new cases, though I hope they might cover some of their old unsolved ones, too.
