Our topic today is Cafe Nervosa... Who do we have on line 2?

As a HUGE fan of Frasier, I would like to talk about Cafe Nervosa. I have recently noticed something about the show and would like to share that with you. I was watching the episode "I Hate Frasier Crane" (Season 1, episode #4) and realized that they located Cafe Nervosa for us. How can this be? Did they give the address? Does it really exist?

I will post more on this in just a few moments, but let's go to the lines of the
Internet and see what others have been talking about in the relation of our
topic...

If you were to type in "Cafe Nervosa" in your favorite search engine, it might
lead you to YAHOO! ANSWERS where Kitty posted: "Is there really a Cafe Nervosa in Seattle? Frasier and Niles spent so much time there. Is there really a place?"

Best Answer (chosen by Asker) by Odin Green
No It doesn't exist. It's actually the Seattle's best that is across from Pikes
Public Market. Also the geography on Frasier is wrong. There is no way that
Frasiers apartment is near the Space Needle. The space needle is on a hill at
the Seattle Center in Queen Anne. Where Frasier lived is down town. Of course the radio station is not that far from the Space Needle. but it doesn't make sense that Frasier would drive around Seattle cause evrything is close by. It's basically Hollywood screwing up the town. Of course, the character of Daphne Moon is believable a lot of English people live in Seattle. If anyone has ever been to Seattle it kinda looks like London.

Being a huge Frasier fan, I wondered that myself. But it doesn't. The show was actually filmed on a set in Hollywood, CA. Only the special 1000th episode (Frasier day) was filmed here is Seattle. Now that I live in Seattle, I think I will open a Cafe Nervosa ;)

In reflecting Odin Green's answer, I would first like to comment on the location of the Space Needle and Frasier's apartment. With all due respect to Odin, I am a HUGE fan of the show, I have eaten at the top of the Space Needle and asked an employee there where Frasier's apartment would have been. The employee went to ask someone and came back with the reply that it would be the tallest building on Queen Anne Hill. Well, the tallest building on Queen Anne Hill was a wide, light colored building that was about ten stories tall.

In one episode, "The Impossible Dream" (Episode #75 Season 4), Elliot Bay Towers is shown for a brief moment. I am attaching that photo. And most of us know that Frasier lived on the 19th floor of a 20 story building.
Though I don't understand Odin's comment on the Space Needle being on a hill in Queen Anne. Even someone who has never been to Seattle can find pictures of the Space Needle on the Internet and wonder what kind of hill is he talking about.
The best view of the Space Needle is from Queen Anne and from the angle of
Frasier's apartment view, that is where the photographer took that shot from, probably from Kerry Park off of W. Highland Dr. and 2nd Ave. W. So if you ask me if I were to build Elliot Bay Towers if I could, it would be right next to Kerry Park.

So, there is no Elliot Bay Towers, but there is an Elliot Bay Book Store located near Pioneer Square.

But I'm getting off topic here. Let's get back to Café Nervosa…

Odin states, "No It doesn't exist. It's actually the Seattle's best that is across from Pikes Public Market." The bottom line is, of course it doesn't exist. It was a show set in Hollywood. But, if it was real, where would it be?
If you are looking for a location, in the episode "I Hate Frasier Crane"
(Episode #4 season 1), Derek Mann calls Frasier out to a fist fight. Frasier
finally agrees and asks Derek to name a time and place. He responds: "Kinsley Square, right outside your office by the old statue – noon tomorrow." What has this to do with Café Nervosa? When Frasier shows up for the fight, a crowd is gathering outside of Café Nervosa where Frasier steps out from to fight Derek Mann.

Is there a Kinsley Square? I can't find it. There are a few squares like
Pioneer Square, Union Square (check out http://www.unionsquareseattle.com/ ), etc. Odin may be right about the Seattle's Best being across from Pike's Market, but we know anyone wanting to visit Café Nervosa would be greatly disappointed in going to Seattle's Best.

Producers of the show say that Café Nervosa has been designed after a café in LA, but if you really want to check out a place that may remind you of Café Nervosa and are visiting Seattle, I would highly suggest the Elliot Bay Book Store. They have a café down stairs that is said to be an inspiration for Café Nervosa as well. It is located at 101 South Main St. Seattle, WA. 98104. It even has an entrance/exit to the street from the café that is just like the outside stair case in Cheers.

I found rumors on the Internet:

Cafe Nervosa

3rd and Pike
Seattle, WA 98109

I found the following on Face Book:

Da Wikipedia, l'enciclopedia libera

Café Nervosa is a fictional coffee shop featured in the American television
sitcom Frasier.

Location and role in the series

It is fictitiously located on the corner of the real-world 3rd and Pike Streets
in Seattle and is portrayed as being just across the street from the also
fictional KACL Radio Studios. As such, many of the KACL staff go there during
their free time, including Frasier Crane and his family. In the story the cafe
has a number of regulars, including the Crane family and friends, and it is
where Frasier and his brother Niles Crane meet to discuss various topics, often joined by their father Martin Crane. It is a prominent location in the series, and the episode "My Coffee with Niles" was set entirely within the cafe.

The producers of Frasier decided that a non-work, non-home setting for Frasier should be a coffee shop, as Seattle is well known for them. They also made sure there were no stools (only chairs) in the cafe, to differentiate it from the Cheers bar back in Boston, where Frasier Crane had previously resided.

The cafe's name, Nervosa, is a feminine Italian and Latin adjective, meaning
"nervous", as well as a psychological term meaning "the debilitating
psychological addiction to an object, belief or behavioral pattern". It can also
refer to "coffee nerves"—a condition caused by drinking too much coffee. On a tenth season episode, the coffee shop was revealed to be named after its owner, Maureen Nervosa.

I am finding the location of Cafe Nervosa at 3rd and Pike on the Internet, but no sorces are given.
According to Google maps, at that intersection there is...

Chipotie Mexican Grill,
Walgreens,
Qdoba Mexican Grill,
and
Golden State University.

Does anyone know where the "3rd and Pike" address for Nervosa was derived from? Was this mentioned in an episode? Does anyone know which one?

OMG, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Cafe Nervosa and I SOOOO wish there were a real one in Seattle! There really IS a 3rd and Pike and in fact just the other day at work I booked a trip for a client to that very location. But they were going to the McDonald's that is there!

I am definitely getting a Cafe Nervosa shirt (either T-shirt or sweatshirt) and maybe some other stuff as well.

Believe me, if there really WAS a Cafe Nervosa, I'd be there every day! That is the coolest place ever, IMO!!! Oh and do I even need to say that I have that picture of Niles and Frasier that's on the coffee cup on my cubicle? Actually I have a BUNCH of pictures of DHP, Niles and Daphne. Kind of a Niles Crane "shrine"!

Season 2: "Fool Me Once, Shame On You"

Man: That's not why I'm calling. I think I found your briefcase.
Frasier: Oh, really? Really, are you sure?
Man: Pretty sure.
Frasier: Well, there's a way we can be positive. Simply turn over the
briefcase and in the upper right-hand corner you should find
a half-moon-shaped watermark, such as would be left by the
careless resting of a champagne flute.
Man: It's full of your stuff, Dr. Crane.
Frasier: Oh. Well, that works as well, yes. Say, listen, is
everything still there?
Man: Well, there's a nice gold pen, a set of car keys, a date
book...
Frasier: What about my wallet?
Man: Oh, sorry.
Frasier: Well, I suppose that was asking for too much. Well, how can
I get it back?
Man: I could drop it off.
Frasier: Oh, better yet, why don't you meet me at the Café Nervosa on
Pike and Third. I'd be glad to give you a reward.

The box they were delivered in was a bit crunched and the thermas mug had a dent in the bottom, which I don't mind, I mean, I'm not trying to resell it. But the thing that surprised me was that the bottom of the thermas has a circle of rubber glued to the bottom and not very well, I might add. I'm going to the store to get some adhesive to fix it.

Ever wondered why Seattle’s coffee shops are named the way they’re named?

As the cold weather begins to send more Seattleites to hot drinks and cozy interiors, we asked staff at a few notable shops what their shops’ names mean to them.

Oh, and for the record, Starbucks is named after both “Starbuck,” the first mate in “Moby Dick,” and “Starbo,” the name of a mining camp on Mount Rainier.

Here’s some trivia on Austin Chase:-
- Started 20 years ago in 1989 about 1 hour from Seattle
- Got it’s name from the founder’s sons, Austin and Chase
- Voted best coffee in the Chicago Coffee Fest

Bauhaus Books and Coffee
301 E. Pine St.
Square designs and clean lines are a staple of this Capitol Hill coffee shop, named after a style of architecture created by a German man named Walter Gropius. A fan of Gropius’ work, original owner Joel Radin made the style a decorative theme.

C&P Coffee
5612 California Ave. S.W,
Though they come up with daily alternatives like “crime and punishment” and “coffee and pastries,” the basis of the name is simpler than that. The “C” stands for co-owner Cameron. And the “P” is for Peter, her husband.

Caffe Ladro
2205 Queen Anne Ave. N. | 12 other locations
Owner Jack Kelly knew exactly what he was doing when he sold Uptown Espresso and opened a new cafe next to a Queen Anne Starbucks: trying to steal their customers. After researching Italian culture and language, Kelly made his decision. The name Caffe Ladro means “coffee thief.”

Caffe Vita
1005 E. Pike St. | 813 Fifth Ave. N. | 4301 Fremont Ave. N. | 5028 Wilson Ave. S.
Founder Mike McConnell was looking for a name that reflected a passion for coffee and inspired staff to adopt a kind of devotion to it. He settled on “vita,” the Italian word for life.

Espresso Vivace
532 Broadway Ave. E. | 227 Yale Ave. N. | 321 Broadway Ave. E.
Like Caffe Vita, this shop wanted to convey an enthusiasm for coffee, particularly caffe espresso, in its name. Founder David Schomer is a a fan of classical music, so the fact that the word “vivace” is used to mark passages that should be played with great life only adds to the appeal.

Herkimer Coffee
7320 Greenwood Ave. N.
Founder Michael Prins’ father was born in the small city in New York that now shares its name with this Greenwood coffee shop. The shop’s logo features a stylized bridge inspired the town’s old Trolley Bridge, one of its only notable landmarks.

Motore Coffee
1904 Ninth Ave.
Founder D.J. Norman got this name while working on his Vespa. While flipping through the repair manual, he landed on the Italian word for “motor” and got inspired. “We found the name to be a natural fit for our downtown customer base,” he said. “Knowledge workers, mental horsepower; and construction workers, physical horsepower.”

Trabant Coffee & Chai
1309 NE 45th St. | 602 2nd Ave.
The word “trabant” means satellite in German (The coffee is “out of this world,” said one staffer). It’s also the name of an East German car that came to symbolize the fall of communism in Western Europe.

Verite Coffee
2052 N.W. Market St. | 1101 34th Ave. | 4556 California Ave. SW
The French name means “truth,” but also indicates a style of moviemaking from the early days of cinema, which explains the Super 8 camera in the logo.

Victrola Coffee
411 15th Ave E. | 310 E Pike St. | 3215 Beacon Ave. S.
Fans of classical music will appreciate this one. A Victrola is a record player from an era close to the heart of the shop’s founder, Jen Strongin (and it’s on the logo). A fan of vintage music and art-deco styling, Strongin adorned the shop with curved wood work, vintage records and posters from the era.

Zeitgeist Coffee
171 S. Jackson St.
Founder Brian Yeck put the focus of the shop on art. “We always strive to show interesting, challenging and thought-provoking works,” he said. Zeitgeist means “spirit of the times,” and Yeck felt it fit.

Zoka Coffee
2200 N. 56th St. | 2901 NE Blakeley St.
The name “zoka” was picked because it means “sunrise” or “new beginnings” in an Asian language, a staffer said. It also has other, weirder meanings. In Turkish, it means “bait” or “spoon.” And in another language — the staffer could not remember which — it has something to do with getting sick. He prefers you think of “sunrise.”

That is very cool, Pat! I live in Seattle and I didn't even know a lot of these! Actually I haven't heard of some of these, but there is a 'chain' called Tully's Coffee that I like a whole lot; even though I'm not a coffee drinker. There's one in the building where I work. Not really sure why it's called Tully's but I'll find out.

And I know I've said this before but I would LOVE it if there was a REAL Cafe Nervosa in Seattle! Sigh....

Henry Winkler had a statue of the Fonz dedicated to him in Wisconsin and I believe there is a Lucy Ball statue in a few places.

It would be so cool if they made a Cafe Nervosa in Seattle and honored it by having Frasier and Niles statues outside of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even better would be to have Frasier and Niles statues sitting at their favorite table, leaving room for two fans to sit at that very table.

Can anyone put in in touch with a statue designer - HA!

This would have been an awesome place for David Hyde Pierce and Kelsey Grammer to fly in for a location shoot for an episode when the show was running. The sounds of the cascading water in the background would have been cool.

Where is the petition? When can I sign it??????

Oh man... if they did this... I'd be in Heaven for sure!

Pat I just LOVE those pictures you posted of the Waterfall Garden and so forth. I haven't been there in ages but it sure is beautiful! And a bit of trivia... that's the site of the first UPS! How cool is that? And OMG, that would have been so awesome if they had done a photo shoot there! LOVE the picture of the Space Needle as well!

HA!! Does anyone have an image of the Frasier Bus Poster advertising his radio show from the episode when Mary was taking over his show. It would be a hoot to copy, adjust to the correct realistic angle, and paste it to the side of the bus in this shot!

Making your way in this crazy world; your work routine gets old.
Take a break from all the callers and put the whole lot on hold.

Wouldn't you like to call it a day?

Sometimes you want to go...

Where everybody knows your blend,
and they're always glad you've brought a friend.
You wanna sit and chat with Niles,
where your troubles are all the same
And not even care that everyone thinks
your troubles are pretty lame.

You wanna go and sip latte,
where people there just don't know,
You've really had an off day,
and completely screwed up your show.

You don't mean to offend.
You gotta go where
Everybody knows your blend.

Okay this is going to sound REALLY lame considering that I spend probably 3/4 of my time in downtown Seattle but I don't get to 3rd and Pike much. For some reason it looks different than I thought it would. I guess I'm picturing just a regular Starbucks-kind of like what Cafe Nervosa would be like.

So, let me ask you, does the show pretty much get it right when portraying Seattle? I know that Frasier and Niles are part of Seattle's upper crust so that's what we're going to see and hear the most about, but sometimes it seems like Seattle is portrayed as almost like a mini New York City in terms of the arts and the upper class. They talk a lot about "world class dining" and symphonies and more than one place to see an opera, and a lot of spas and a lot of different fancy French restaurants and sometimes it seems like they belong to more exclusive clubs than one city usually has, especially a small to mid-sized city like Seattle. So does Seattle have a larger upper class than most cities, do you think?

It's funny because the show really does get a lot of things right-as far as the places they mention and so forth but I think it's funny when they get things wrong as well. Niles mentioned "The Mayflower Hotel" once and there really is a Mayflower Hotel. My bus goes by it every Saturday on my way home from work.

I still crack up when I hear Niles talking about the "Ore-gone border check." I gave Kristen a hard time about pronouncing it "Ore-gone" instead of "Ore-gun" like we say it but I think that's the way east-coasters would say it. So I think it's funny when DHP says it b/c he's from NY but Niles was born and raised in Seattle and I'm pretty certain that he wouldn't' really pronounce it like that!

Martin tried to get Frasier to drive him to Rattlesnake Ridge in "The Two Mrs. Cranes". Rattlesnake Ridge is a real place but it's definitely NOT five hours away! More like 2 maybe and that's with traffic!
As for the upper class and world class dining... Well obviously I'm not upper class at all but since we have Bill Gates living here and so forth, I can see that there would be places around like the ones that Frasier and Niles would frequent.

I can see Seattle having a larger upper class than other cities because things are so expensive here. it's not uncommon at all to find 'normal' homes that run upwards of a million dollars.

When I moved up here from Texas I noticed right away that things are a lot more expensive here than down there-especially real-estate. I'm sure that has a lot to do with Boeing and Microsoft and those high-profile companies that we have.

There's an area called Medina that is filled with luxurious homes and I could picture Niles and Daphne living there.

Just yesterday I saw a sign on the side of a bus for the Seattle Opera and of course it made me think of them. I am SO mad that I didn't go and see "The Magic Flute" when it was here. Had I not ever watched "Frasier", I would never even consider going to the opera, believe me!

We have a gorgeous symphony hall that I'm dying to go to. I'd love to go to one of their Christmas performances and I could see Frasier and Niles going there.

I'm probably not answering your questions the way you'd like but perhaps Pat can enlighten me a bit!

Thanks for the shout out Andrea, but I think you are FAR more qualified to answer that question more than I am.

Although I have not actually lived in Seattle, I am just a drive around or ferry ride away. Here's my little comment on Seattle:
Because of the rain and water front, Seattle's air is just as clean and brisk as being far out in the country side, yet holds true to the grandeur of its majestic architecture. I have not seen a city like it. It has a feeling like you just want to spend so much time there. Someone once said that in Seattle, everything is within walking distance. Well, there is so much to see, walking through Seattle doesn't seem like a long walk at all.

Niles once commented on Seattles fine dining and world class culture. As Andrea has mentioned, it is rich in operas and luxurious homes. It also has great museums. They have high-end grand hotels that are sky scrapers and many, many great places to eat.

Yes, I think the show covers it well. Yet, Seattle is not full of snobs. Though Seattle is my favorite city of all, there is a number of homeless people down town - which was somewhat touched on in the episode where Frasier worked at the station on Christmas day and went to a diner after work in his torn shirt and jeans where others pitched together to buy him his meal.

If the thought of finding a cozy coffee nook to sip excellent java while watching the rain is appealing to you, there is no greater place on earth to do that than Seattle. Even when I worked in Seattle, it almost seemed like being on vacation to be able to walk those streets.

Sorry for going on and on...

Makes me want to spend another day with my camera in Seattle.

Did you know that under a bridge, there is an artwork of a huge troll? He is grabbing a VW bug - yes, it is an actual car in the artwork!!!

Sorry, the name of the bridge escapes me at the moment. Also, there were a lot of dust particals in the air on the day I took these.

Also in the episode where Daphne takes Martin out to find the store that sold his favorite shoes, they run into a homeless man who wants a kiss in trade for the information to where the store relocated. Martin asks Daphne to kiss him, but the homeless man replies, "I wasn't talking about her."
