Yabba Dabba Wha?
Seth MacFarlane has closed a deal to reboot "The Flintstones" via new TV and film projects.

First reported by Deadline, MacFarlane and his legal team have cleared the necessary hurdles to get the project started. Fox confirmed the news at their 2011 Upfronts.

MacFarlane is known for his Fox cartoon sitcoms "Family Guy", "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show", and that type of humor reportedly put some "Flintstones" shareholders on edge.

The classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon aired from 1960-1966 on ABC. The series aired several spinoffs and animated specials throughout the years, with the most recent, "The Flintstones: On The Rocks" airing in 2001.

It was reinterpreted for the big screen starring John Goodman and Rosie O'Donnell in 1994 with a prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, hitting theaters in 2000.

Fox said it will air in 2013.

You know, I generally like McFarlane's shows, but this is just wrong, on many levels.

If I want to watch the Flintstones, I'll watch the original. No offense to fans of Seth MacFarland but I've never cared for his shows.

I like Seth MacFarlane's shows but I don't see why he has to redo The Flintstones. He already has his own shows/characters.

There will be a new generation who will think that "The Flintstones" is a Seth MacFarlane original and have no clue it originated in the 1960s from Hanna/Barbara.

I may be in the minority on this one, but I would be willing to give it a shot. The Flintstones was always meant to be an adult show, I'd like to see a fresh approach to this classic show.

I see a difference.

The original (and for my money, ONLY) Flintstones was indeed intended to be enjoyed by adults but I think they also obviously wrote it so that it was "kid friendly" and could be enjoyed and understood by kids.

I think we all know what a McFarlane Flintstones will be like. Unless it's vastly different than any other show he's done, it's nothing I'd want my kid to watch. I don't think I want them to see jokes about Wilma's "time of the month" or Fred's sexual perversions, or Barney doing drugs or something.

Again, all of this is fair game on McFarlane's other shows, which I usually get a kick out of. But there's something inherently "family" about the Flintstones and I'd just as soon that would remain inviolate.

I agree. Personally, I have never understood the appeal of MacFarlane's so-called "humor." All of his shows are unoriginal, unfunny, boring and offensive
(not necessarily in that order).

Now I like McFarlane's work on "Family Guy", "American Dad", and "The Cleveland Show" (I'm getting to like "The Cleveland Show" and "American Dad" more and "Family Guy" a little less)...but McFarlane retooling "The Flinstones"?!

Now I, myself would like to recreate Loopy de Loop (Another Hanna-Barbera Creation) for a show that I'm making called "Bertstown"...if it ever gets shown on Adult Swim. The difference with that, I hope is to have Loopy keep his identity such as being Considerate, Kind, and Charming. I'm also going to have a few Loopy episodes where he did get the origins of his kindness, veganism, his love toward Helen Warner (A character that I made), and his family traits (Something that's from Agarn's family in "F Troop").

Back on subject...I have a strange feeling that THIS "Flinsones" will be for adults and they may smoke like back in the 60's....

He'll probably lace it with his far left ideology and left leaning politics destroying one of many things that made the Flintstones a classic to begin with was that it was a-political.

All the Hanna/Barbera heirs must be going broke to agree to this madness. For the record, I for one didn't mind the Fred And Barney Show they should have given Wilma and Betty a bigger part, which was my only gripe.

My sentiments, also.

Besides there have been quite a few reincarnations of The Flintstones, but none of the come close to the original.

What makes you think McFarland's version of The Flintstones is going to be "family-friendly"? I mean maybe that's his intention, or maybe its going to be more adult-orinated like The Family Guy .

I just don't think Warner Bros. would allow anyone to take one of their most beloved franchises and raunch it up.

If it can be done right, has anyone seen the new Flintstone Pebbles commericial? The new voices sound a little like the originals if they use them and have good stories who knows.

Nobody should be allowed to remake The Flintstones or any classic show. If we need "fresh takes" on something, create something completely original instead of some half-baked remake.

But for the love of god, leave the Flintstones alone :(

Seth better not pervert these characters. Of all people, why did he have to be the one to buy the rights?

http://www.looper.com/86415/seth-macfarlane-says-flintstones-reboot-probably-wont-happen/

The writing was already on the cave walls, but Seth MacFarlane said his live-action Flintstones reboot is basically history.

MacFarlane recently said in a Reddit AMA (https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/70bf9u/i_am_seth_macfarlane_back_for_a_new_and_better_go/dn1y5q6/?context=3) (via ScreenRant (http://screenrant.com/seth-macfarlanes-live-action-flintstones-probably-wont-happen/)) that his take on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon likely won't ever get made. When asked by a fan if the series will move forward, McFarlane said, "As of now, probably not."

But his reason kind of makes a lot of sense: "Honestly, I couldn't figure out a way to find enough differentiation between a modern-day Fred Flintstone and [Family Guy's]*Peter Griffin."

It too 20th Century Fox more than two year to negotiate a deal with rights holder Warner Bros. for MacFarlane's planned reboot, which was expected to arrive back in 2013. But according to The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/seth-macfarlane-flintstones-tv-series-315980), network insiders who read the script "were not thrilled," and Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly reportedly said "he likes it but doesn't love it."

Meanwhile, MacFarlane found a new creative outlet: his live-action sci-fi series The Orville, which premiered on Fox two weeks ago. Obviously based on Star Trek, the show has a half-serious tone that could likely have been applied to a Flintstones reboot.

But another Hollywood A-lister has a different live-action series based on a Hanna-Barbera cartoon in the works: Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis is developing a live-action reboot of The Jetsons, which landed at ABC.

I don't mind some of McFarlane's stuff, but the Flintstones and other shows of the past need no rebooting or reimagining by anyone.

This is the story of how a straight-to-series order, a staffed writers' room, and real production art still led nowhere.

The video breaks down why The Flintstones mattered so much in the first place, how the 1960 series changed television, and why rebooting it was never as simple as putting a modern spin on Bedrock. What looked like a dream project became a creative trap.

I go through Fox's 2011 deal with MacFarlane, the Warner Bros. rights agreement, the writers' room, the leased office, and the concept art that proved this reboot was real. Then I get into the collapse, including the script problems, the quiet shutdown, and MacFarlane's later admission that he could not find enough daylight between Fred Flintstone and Peter Griffin.

The video also looks at the 2016 DC Comics Flintstones run by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh, which managed to do something MacFarlane could not: make the property feel fresh by using Bedrock to explore consumerism, PTSD, class, religion, and the cost of building a society.

At the center of all of it is a bigger question about nostalgia, creative voice, and whether The Flintstones can actually be rebooted for a modern audience without losing the simplicity that made it work in the first place.
