View Full Version : Has the New Unsolved Mysteries (Farina) help solve any crimes? sffan 04-16-2011, 10:37 PM I know this has been asked before, but I'm wondering if this new version has been successful helping solve any mysteries? Kyte 04-17-2011, 12:08 AM Not to my knowledge, no. I'd say like half the people interviewed in the new episodes are dead. Steve W. 04-17-2011, 08:02 AM Well, Mahfuz Huq has been captured and Mike Reimer's remains have been found since the Farina version started airing in 2008. I don't know if there is a direct correlation between people watching the Farina episodes and that being a trigger to leading to these findings, but it's possible. XCalibur 05-01-2011, 09:52 AM Well, Mahfuz Huq has been captured and Mike Reimer's remains have been found since the Farina version started airing in 2008. I don't know if there is a direct correlation between people watching the Farina episodes and that being a trigger to leading to these findings, but it's possible. They also found the guy who was responsible for writing those sick letters to Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg's parents, the couple who was murdered in 1987. Even though he turned out not to be the killer, at least that one aspect of the case is resolved and they can focus on other evidence besides the letters to go after the killer. Also, Christopher Chichester was found as well, the suspect in the John and Linda Sohus dissapearance. But like you I'm not sure if the Farina episodes had anything to do with these cases being somewhat resolved. I don't have a problem with Farina, and I think its good they are showing these old cases again............ However, unless they modernize them with updates and start showing epilogues with Farina updating the current status of the case and the segment, and reactivate the 1-800 number, it becomes slightly more pointless as they are just rehashing the exact same out of date facts with Dennis Farina doing it. For instance they showed the Ricardo Caputo case the other day (one of the biggest scumbags ever profiled on UM by the way), but that case had been solved for years on a Robert Stack update. Although, one new fact was that the piece of trash died of a heart attack in prison, Stack didn't mention that so I suppose they are at least somewhat up to date. Still, they could do a little better with these updates on the Farina version though. And for God's sake reactivate the 1-800 number if nothing else. Mysteryphile 05-02-2011, 10:55 AM With our luck, it's for those home improvement roofing scam artists that were profiled on UM. ha ha! Koala 05-02-2011, 10:37 PM I know this has been asked before, but I'm wondering if this new version has been successful helping solve any mysteries? I would actually think that today, this website has more influence on solving crimes than the actual old and redited versions that Dennis airs. Can't say for sure without statistics. One thing is for sure without him and the reairings no one would be caring. Not many would post. Hope would be lost to memories. So Kudoes to him no matter how it gets done and just keep it going and hope it sparks new episodes. The people deserve it. Big3sCompanyFan 05-05-2011, 07:01 AM I seriously doubt it. The ratings for the new UM gotta be abysmal. MAYBE a couple hundred thousand people watch it at best? As many of us have stated WE NEED NEW EPISODES!!! Mysteryphile 05-05-2011, 09:18 AM It's back on Lifetime, isn't it? (transplanted yank now living in England...but I think I heard it was) Didn't Lifetime make some new episodes when they were showing it before? That's why I have some hope that they might actually DO something with UM. Not that I'll see them anytime soon...here in england the american shows don't get here for ages! (that's why I watch them online lol) rerungirl 05-05-2011, 12:52 PM I caught the last ten minutes of the 5:00 show on Lifetime yesterday and there were two updates I'm curious about. The first concerns the Lisa Marie Kimmel case (finally finding her car and making an arrest in the case). The second involves a man who had been abandoned as an infant. He was left on the seat of a car in a predominantly Jewish area of Los Angeles back in the 1940's. The only clue authorities had to go on was a silk handkerchief that had been left with the baby. It had a W monogram and appeared to be a man's handkerchief. In that update, the man's half brother had come forward and a dna test confirmed they were siblings. The segment ended with an unidentified picture of a man he believes may have been his father. Viewers were asked to provide tips if they know the man's identity. Were both these updates new to the Farina episodes? I was aware of the arrest in the Kimmel case but don't know if that info ever showed up on the old Robert Stack episodes. I also remember seeing the abandoned baby episode when it originally aired but don't think I ever saw an update before yesterday. Just wondering if the updates were indeed added to the Farina shows or were just rehashed from the original series. sffan 05-08-2011, 01:48 PM I think the Lisa Kimmel update was made by the new UM, i think... I believe the mans DNA was linked sometime after Stacks episodes, I could be wrong though, I know the date the man was arrested is on one of these threads or on the updates sticky thread. If it was after 2002 the update was made by the new UM. I am unsure about the other case. mwcarolina 05-08-2011, 09:24 PM honestly, i dont know if the Farina UM helped solve cases or not, but honestly, most of the cases are so old that i would be surprised if it was the new UM that help solve the cases. what's sad is that most of the cases are so old that the kidnapped kids who werent found would be adults noww, if they are alive. Big3sCompanyFan 05-11-2011, 08:01 AM honestly, i dont know if the Farina UM helped solve cases or not, but honestly, most of the cases are so old that i would be surprised if it was the new UM that help solve the cases. what's sad is that most of the cases are so old that the kidnapped kids who werent found would be adults noww, if they are alive. Which would be a miracle. The FBI says something like 90% of abducted kids are killed within 24 hours. Like Adam Walsh. Mysteryphile 05-11-2011, 08:09 AM that's a grim statistic...although I think babies that are abducted must have a lot better chance of surviving. (because I'm assuming someone was either desperate for a child or the child was sold on the blackmarket and either way the child was with someone that was wanting to care for it.) DALLASTEXAN!! 05-15-2011, 01:36 PM I enjoy watching them now when I can. After many years I have realized that UM had to move on if they wanted to keep airing their show. I do miss the old shows and would still watch them if I had them on hand for sure. I do hope that one day they will release a season by season set. might not be possible or in the works, but beyond the dvd sets out there I would like to see some of the other episodes that I missed when i was a child and was too scared to watch. I watched a lot in the 1989/90 seasons, but was terrified of the show and didn't watch again until I saw it on lifetime in 2003. From 2003 until Lifetime cancelled the show I watched everyday that I could. every now and again I see one that I had never seen before on the dennis farina set. overall there is really not a show quite like UM. from the different genres of the episodes they have the ability to touch their viewers in a wide variety of ways. it is truly a great show. Hopefully some of the cold cases will be solved. With the new advances in technology and changes in society..it would be interesting to see how new episodes would fare. that and all of the competition. I don't know why the ID channel hasn't reached out to the C/M team? i guess at the end of the day it would be tough for a new show to be successful if it is not able to reach a wide audience(like UM did on NBC). Big3sCompanyFan 05-15-2011, 06:02 PM You gotta wonder how many people from the 80s and 90s UMs aren't even alive anymore? Mysteryphile 05-16-2011, 05:38 AM I remember reading a thread on just that topic...it listed some of the people that had passed away that we had seen on UM. |
