View Full Version : What exactly was 'Angie' About and was it any good??? Brian Damage 04-15-2011, 12:30 AM Just curious? The Flying Dutchmans 04-15-2011, 12:39 AM Just curious? From what I remember about the sitcom, it had Donna Pescow from Saturday night fever, and had Rober Hayes as her Pediatrition husband. And a young Doris Roberts as her mom. It has been so many years since I seen the show that I do not remember all of it. Marvo301 04-15-2011, 01:04 AM Donna Pescow played Angie, a waitress from a blue collar family who lived with her Mom (Doris Roberts) and her sister(Debralee Scott). She meets and marries a doctor(Robert Hays) and tries to adapt to living with his wealthy family in their mansion. So it is basically a fish out of water premise. To complicate matters the Doctor's mother doesn't approve of his choice of wife and does her best to make things even more difficult for Angie. Was the show any good or was it typical sitcom formula? Marvo301 04-15-2011, 01:14 AM Thanks guys for the info! Was the show any good or was it typical sitcom formula? I'll admit it was quite formulaic but the talent and quality of the cast raised it above the level of most formula sitcoms at least in my opinion. Brian Damage 04-15-2011, 01:16 AM I'll admit it was quite formulaic but the talent and quality of the cast raised it above the level of most formula sitcoms at least in my opinion. Thanks Marv! Mr. Television 04-15-2011, 09:57 AM I liked the show although I think the first season was better than the second. I remember ABC used to air it on weekday mornings in the early 80's. It also had one of the best sitcom theme songs of all time. old grouch 04-15-2011, 10:24 AM Another show that needs to be on DVD. treky 04-16-2011, 01:13 AM yes, it does!! (are you listening SHOUT! FACTORY?) TVFactFan 04-16-2011, 12:28 PM It was only two things I liked about this show 1. The opening theme song 2. Yes the song was very UPLIFTING ThomasE 07-10-2012, 03:58 PM Yes the song was very UPLIFTING Dude, the first time I heard this song was when I bought volume 6 of TV's greatest theme songs: 70's and 80's. On the disc was the short, disco version. From there, I just had to see the show. It was airing on TV Land at the time but I didn't have it on the cable lineup in Tampa. I have eps now but that song put me in spin. Wow. For some reason, I kept thinking of New York when I'd think of that song. Debra Lee Scott and Donna Pescow were prototypes of New York that I'd associate with the song as well. I'm to get my local radio station CBS fm to play this song as part of the 70's Saturday night party since the LP is 02:18. Solomon, I was suprised that you hadn't checked youtube when you were inquiring about the theme song. LOL. I'm glad you found it, though. People around me would hear this song for the first time and be like "That song sound cool" or my mother'd be like "What a nice positive song". LOL. "Different Worlds" is still my jam. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uenud_vexZA TVFactFan 07-11-2012, 12:12 AM Dude, the first time I heard this song was when I bought volume 6 of TV's greatest theme songs: 70's and 80's. Mr. Television 07-13-2012, 09:41 PM Was the show still based in Philadelphia? Yea it was still set in Philadelphia. The show just lost something after Angie and Brad got married. It was still good but season one was much better. yayaya 09-25-2012, 04:35 PM I loved this show, mainly because of Donna, who I loved in Saturday Night Fever. I am guessing it was her role in that movie that led to her getting her own tv show. One thing I hated about the first season was the character, Hillary, played by Tammy Lauren. I never really liked the actress as a young girl. She was very annoying in her various roles. She was the kind of child actor that I never could like regardless of their role. The only role I could tolerate her in was when she played the teen hooker in "Facts of Life." I guess because she was older and playing a more serious role. I was very happy when she was removed from the cast. TVFactFan 09-25-2012, 04:37 PM The theme song was pretty nice LOL angiefan 09-25-2012, 09:44 PM yes it was, i loved the opening scenes from the first and second season. i thought tammy lauren was cute. i loved the theme song, and it's about a waitress who meets a doctor, who thinks,he's a regular customer, but he's a wealthy doctor, and she falls in loves with him and gets married, lives with him in his mansion. doris roberts is angie's mother and debralee scott is angie's sister, robert heys is brad. It was during its second season where the ratings went down after the show was moved to Tuesdays AFTER Happy Days and before Three's Company. I think people didn't care for the relationship post-wedding. The whole blue-collar girl with the rich guy was no longer there since Angie married and then had her own business. I read through some of the episode guides and none of them are memorable. The only thing memorable to me is the theme song, the fact that annoying Tammy Lauren was in the show, and the scene of Doris Roberts kicking the ironing board as it slowly made its way down to the floor in the opening credits. I just remember how Angie and Brad met, but nothing else comes to mind as far as other scenes or episodes that stood out. I just know I liked watching the show. Need to do some research TV_on_the_Porch 11-14-2012, 11:48 AM The ratings were OK on Tuesday night, down somewhat from the previous season to be sure--but so was Happy Days. In January Angie was moved to Monday following Laverne & Shirley. That was a disaster, but far moreso for L&S than for Angie. WKRP In Cincinnati (CBS) had just been moved to 8PM Mondays a few weeks prior and apparently ABC believed it would be vulnerable in that slot. Boy were they wrong! What happened by about the fourth week though, was that while L&S was a distant third to WKRP, Angie actually finished second, ahead of The Last Resort, though only slightly. That was the last straw, and L&S was promptly tucked behind Happy Days once again, while Angie was rewarded for showing up its Monday lead-in by being put on hiatus for two months. In early April it was dumped into the Saturday death slot along with the show they had shelved to make room for L&S, The Goodtime Girls. That lasted three weeks before the network announced Angie's cancellation. The whole thing was a gyp, but what can you do. ABC made a number of dumb decisions that season and Angie was one direct casualty of that. Looks like since L&S was a proven hit, ABC expected certain numbers from Angie and the show could never deliver. Kind of like when I use certain pics of myself on a dating profile. The pics that has a history of generating positive feedback and getting me dates are the ones I tend to stick it. But if I take a new picture and it doesn't generate the same feedback as the ones that got me dates, then I don't hesitate to get rid of them and go back to the ones I already had.     Loves Old Tv 06-12-2013, 05:47 PM Another change in the second season was that the couple moved from Brad's large house to an apartment. LOL Like its contemporary, Makin' It, the best thing about the show was the theme song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOUiH45QKP8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNVcCX0mc8c And both, like Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy, were from Miller-Milkis Productions. Mork & Mindy was the only one without a memorable, catchy theme song. edplattfan 11-04-2013, 11:27 AM I was about 3 or 4 when Angie aired. I remember the the SEcond season theme song with Robert Hays jugggling the apples in the park. When ABC started airing the show around 1985(and my local Boston station was doing the same) I video taped them all! I had a huge crush on Robert Hays. Anyway, I thought the show was cute and funny. I enjoyed Donna Pescow as Angie, a hard working Italian American who was a waitress. SHe fell for Brad whom she thought was a poor doctor. Turns out he was a millionaire's son but down to earth. They decided not to rely on riches but their love. Doris Roberts was the best as Angie's mom. Her husband went out for cigarettes and never returned but she still set a place at the table. She wasn't anything like her "Marie" character in Everybody Loves Raymond. I think one of the best eps was when they were all on Family Feud. Above, someone posted the cast on the REAL game show but they also did an episode where the plot was about the Bensons and Falcos being on the show. THe Falcos had their aunt who didn't speak ENglish and Mrs. Falco had to translate, especially in the lightening round. So funny. WHY Can't this show be on DVD!!! I just read "Flo" was put on DVD and, while I remember that show(I was probably 6 at the time, I watched too much tv as a kid) I know it didn't last as long as Angie. Angie was the creation of Gary Marshall, Penny's brother. This was one of his "misses." Our family would watch and it really was a great show how a common working class woman falls for a rich and blue blood guy. However what made the show work, the writers destroyed. The first season was HUGE. The banter between the families was great. However once they got married and moved in together, the magic was gone. How do you keep it going? Obviously the production company made an incredible blunder by marrying the main character so soon in the show's history, and worse still they made the same blunder made on Rhoda just a few years earlier. There's an old saying in golf, going to school on someone else's putt, that sure didn't happen here. All that said, ABC which had the huge surge in popularity in the mid70's was just starting downhill in the 79-80 season. Happy Days the show on right before Angie took a steep drop from 3 to 17 in the ratings. Several other hit series dropped as well, Mork and Mindy dropped from 3 to 28, Laverne and Shirley dropped from 1 out of the top 30, , Starksy and Hutch was in its final season, Kotter was cancelled after the 78-79 season even Three's Company started losing audience. Fred Silverman had already left the network so things were going wrong in a hurry. It was a perfect storm in 79-80 for the ABC network not a good time for a show entering its first full season.
