View Full Version : For Fans Of 'Dynasty,' Did The Show Really Jump The Shark After Season 5 "Massacre?"

The Moldavian Massacre, Season 5
For a series that specialized in season-ending cliff-hangers (remember Crystle and Alexis in the burning cabin, or Blake left for dead atop a mountain?), Dynasty's season 5 capper was an over-the-top extravaganza. Amanda Carrington's wedding to Prince Michael of Moldavia rivaled the nuptials of Princesses Diana and Grace — until rebel forces opened fire in the final moments of the fairy-tale ceremony. All summer long, it was ''Who will live? Who will die?'' as fans speculated on the outcome. Alas, Dynasty returned in the fall and the only ones dead were some minor characters we can't even remember. Just like that, the show jumped the shark. But for one glorious summer, Moldavia rocked! —Ari Karpel

Dr. Thong 03-22-2011, 10:44 AM I think it did. I mean, a bunch of terrorists open fire on a church with machine guns and only two minor characters die?? Come on!
Dynasty did go downhill after that: Storylines involving Krystle being kidnapped and replaced with a lookalike, Fallon being played by Emma Samms and just a general campiness seemed to take over.
McGillicuddy 03-22-2011, 11:58 PM I liked the "Moldavia Massacre", Fun cliff hanger! Not sure if I remember who died though. Ali MacGraw?? William Campbell?? The Groom, Michael Praed??
Dr. Thong 03-23-2011, 11:05 AM William Campbell and Ali McGraw's characters were killed off. Everyone else emerged with their hairstyles and lives intact.
catlover79 03-23-2011, 11:44 AM I guess this storyline is to Dynasty what the "Pam's dream" plot was to Dallas.
McGillicuddy 03-23-2011, 12:49 PM What happened to Prince whatever-his-name was. Did Amanda actually get to marry him? I don't remember him after the massacre.
Dr. Thong 03-23-2011, 03:58 PM They were married, but it didn't last long. He was a goofball. And then Amanda was played by an American actress with no accent!
catlover79 03-23-2011, 04:00 PM Why not? They had a suddenly American Amanda, to go with a suddenly British Fallon!!

Oh, yeah Fake Amanda! She was a waitress in a Hard Rock Cafe, when someone from Dynasty discovered her, and thought she looked like Catherine Oxenberg! She never even acted before! Yes this was a jump-the-shark moment!!
Dr. Thong 03-23-2011, 09:18 PM And she didn't last long. A few episodes at the beginning of season seven.
catlover79 03-23-2011, 09:26 PM The two faces of Amanda Carrington - Catherine Oxenberg (British) and Karen Cellini (American):
Dr. Thong 03-23-2011, 09:28 PM Karen Cellini looked like a valley girl. Catherine Oxenburg at least looked British.
Dynasty never did very well with replacement actors, IMO.
catlover79 03-23-2011, 09:31 PM I was shocked to learn that Catherine Oxenberg is really American (born in NYC), but she was raised in London - and is Yugoslavian royalty.
Mr. Television 03-23-2011, 11:28 PM Karen Cellini looked like a valley girl. Catherine Oxenburg at least looked British.

I think Jack Coleman did okay as Steven. The rest were awful. I couldn't stand Emma Samms as Fallon.
catlover79 03-23-2011, 11:44 PM I read someplace that Karen Cellini had actually auditioned for a role on The Colbys, but the producers decided to put her on Dynasty instead as the new Amanda. Hollywood logic!!
Dr. Thong 03-24-2011, 10:05 AM I think Jack Coleman did okay as Steven. The rest were awful. I couldn't stand Emma Samms as Fallon.
Someone made an observation once that Jack Coleman was uncomfortable when he was playing Steven as gay. I think Al Corley was a better actor and didn't seem to have a problem with Steven as being gay.
Corley just made the mistake of publicly expressing his frustration with the producers not being able to decide whether Steven was gay or straight.
Leslie Eckhardt 06-10-2012, 10:38 AM I think Jack Coleman did okay as Steven. The rest were awful. I couldn't stand Emma Samms as Fallon.
Emma Samms is a good actress, just woefully miscast as Fallon.

It was the climate of the times that made the producers and writers vaccilate about Steven's sexuality. He bounced back and forth so many times throughout the series that it was hard to remember if he was gay or straight in any given season. Gay men didn't watch the show for Steven however, they watched it for the over-the-top interplay between Krystle and Alexis.
catlover79 06-10-2012, 02:20 PM I think Krystle and Alexis became favorite characters for the drag queens to play.
McGillicuddy 10-12-2012, 09:59 PM I think Jack Coleman did okay as Steven. The rest were awful. I couldn't stand Emma Samms as Fallon.
Susan Dey, would have made a good replacement for Fallon. Emma Samms should have been cast as Amanda. Catherine Oxenburg became a problem on the set which resulted in her termination. (This all could have been avoided, and there would have never been a need for a Fake Amanda)
Dr. Thong 10-13-2012, 09:50 AM Susan Dey, would have made a good replacement for Fallon. Emma Samms should have been cast as Amanda. Catherine Oxenburg became a problem on the set which resulted in her termination. (This all could have been avoided, and there would have never been a need for a Fake Amanda)
Fake Amanda was not only played by a terrible actress, but what happened to Amanda's British accent? All of a sudden she went from a spoiled British brat to a valley girl.
And while no one could ever replace Pamela Sue Martin as the one, true Fallon, Susan Dey would have been a much better casting choice. But I believe she was in L.A. Law by that point. Not sure, but I think it was around that time frame.
