It's time to head back to The Shire!
After the blockbuster success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, one would imagine that The Hobbit would be smooth sailing. Instead, we've gotten five years of anticipation, stretching the full life of Cinematical.
It started with rights issues in 2005. Since then, Peter Jackson went to war with New Line for its Rings accounting:
- Sam Raimi and Guillermo del Toro circled the project before del Toro signed on
- the book was split in two
- money woes made pre-production difficult
- delays abounded
- del Toro left
- a bunch of new names vied for the opportunity before the whirlwind came full circle and Jackson jumped in the director's chair
If this back-and-forth has left you wary about the film ever coming to be, this should help amp up the excitement: Peter Jackson has shared two glimpses of himself hangin' in the Shire.
There's nothing exactly new to see. We already got a taste of the Hobbit world in Rings and some far-off shots of the set last summer.
What's great about these images is the feel. Jackson is, undoubtedly, the father of the modern Hobbits, and seeing him standing in that round doorway is like the comfort of seeing Dad come home after a long and tumultuous time away.

Peter Jackson's pair of films based on J.R.R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit, now have their official titles and release dates, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is set to hit theaters Dec. 14, 2012.
The second installment, being filmed back-to-back with the first, will arrive one year later: The Hobbit: There and Back Again is due out Dec. 13, 2013.

Another year and a half? Seriously?
I'm not even a fan and I think that's ridiculous.

The latest of updates comes in the form of three images that director Peter Jackson recently shared with Entertainment Weekly.
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/hobbit3-550x350.jpg
"There's no way you can pace yourself for shoots like these," said Jackson.
"When we were going through the schedule for 'The Hobbit,' I felt a terrible drop in my stomach when I saw that we'd be shooting for 254 days. We're only 12 days short of 'The Lord of the Rings' even though we're only doing two movies. When I saw that, I had to sort of pick myself up off the floor and carry on."
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/ian-mckellen-is-gandalf-600x426.jpg
"He's in fantastic form," Jackson said McKellen reprising his role as Gandalf.
"In a way, his role in 'The Hobbit' has more technical difficulties than 'The Lord of the Rings' did, because he has scenes with 14 smaller characters -- obviously the dwarves and the hobbits are shorter ... I remember saying to him [laughs], 'Look, this isn't 'Waiting for Godot' or 'King Lear.' This is 'The Hobbit.' This is the real thing.'"
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/martin-freeman-is-the-hobbit-600x416.jpg
"He fits the ears, and he's got some very nice feet," Jackson said of lead hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
"I think he's got the biggest hobbit feet we've had so far. They're a little bit hard to walk in, but he's managed to figure out the perfect hobbit gait."

Distant cousins of Thorin Oakenshield, these two doughty Northern Dwarves join the Company out of a sense of loyalty to their kin, and also because they have a substantial sum of money invested in the venture.
Along with Bombur, Gloin is the only other married Dwarf in the Company (there being a shortage of female dwarves in general). His wife is an acclaimed beauty with a particularly fine beard. Gloin is the proud father of a young son, Gimli, who will go on to become part of the famous Fellowship of the Ring.

These three brothers, all sons of the same mother, could not be more different from each other.
Dori, the oldest, spends much of his time watching out for Ori, the youngest; making sure he's not caught a chill or got himself killed by Wargs or Goblins.
Nobody quite knows what Nori gets up to most of the time, except that it's guaranteed to be dodgy and quite probably, illegal.
Dori, Nori and Ori are intensely loyal to each other – and whilst they are perfectly happy fighting amongst themselves, woe-betide anyone who means harm to one of these brothers.

From left to right, we've got Stephen Hunter as Bombur, James Nesbitt as Bofur, and William Kircher as Bifur.
Not sure how well Bombur fares in the heat of battle with nothing but a big ol' soup ladle to defend himself, but then again, that is one hell of a mustache/sideburns combo he's got goin' on. Totally makes up for it.

JamesG 07-17-2011, 09:28 PM First Look at Hobbit Dwarf Thorin
By Sharon Knolle
Posted Jul 17th 2011
Meet Peter Jackson's latest dwarf, Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the dwarf band that meets up with Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming Hobbit films.
He's played by Richard Armitage, who's channeling his fiercest Highlander-meets-Klingon look in a just-released photo posted to TheOneRing.net.
When he was cast, Jackson said of Armitage:
"He is one of the most exciting and dynamic actors working on screen today and we know he is going to make an amazing Thorin Oakenshield. We feel very lucky that one of the most beloved characters in Middle-earth is in such good hands."

Peter Jackson has a message for fans, reporters and Comic-Con conventioneers: The Hobbit won't be in San Diego when the convention opens Thursday.
Here's Jackson's message to the millions, posted on his Facebook page Wednesday:
Good news and bad news today. Bad news is that we won't be doing any 'Hobbit' presentation at Comic Con in San Diego this year. New Line and Warner Bros were very happy to support a presentation, but I declined, simply because I felt it was too early.
There's so much more of the films still to shoot. I just wanted to get that out there, because I've seen various references to the possibility of something Hobbity at Comic Con.
Hate to disappoint anyone. But something tells me we will be there in force next year.
Now for the good news ...
We've just finished a new video blog, covering a little more of the first block of shooting. So please enjoy this-at least you don't have to travel to San Deigo to see it!
I've been on the go since wrapping the first shooting block, but I'm about to settle down and get into the much delayed 20 Questions. I've a few half-written and will get those done very, very soon! I promise!
Cheers,
Peter J

JamesG 07-21-2011, 10:57 AM This May or May Not Be the First Poster for The Hobbit
By Aiden Redmond

After a great new video blog from Peter Jackson and the buzzkill announcement that he won't be making it to Comic-Con this year, it looks like we might have one more thing to be excited about for The Hobbit.
Not that we had any idea, but apparently the movie is being filmed with a line of HD cameras by RED Digital Cinema. On any other day, that wouldn't exactly be news, but since they like to put up posters of popular movies that were shot with their cameras, that leads us to today's update with what could very well be the first teaser poster for The Hobbit.

JamesG 07-30-2012, 03:35 PM Third Hobbit Film Confirmed
7/30/2012
by Jordan Zakarin
After a three film Lord of the Rings series, New Line, MGM and Warner Bros. will return to Middle Earth for another three pictures.
The three companies and series architect Peter Jackson announced on Monday that The Hobbit, the prequel to the LOTR series that was initially planned to be broken into two parts, will instead be split into three.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the third film will be released in Summer 2014.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14 of this year and There and Back Again, the second film, is due out December 13, 2013.
"Upon recently viewing a cut of the first film, and a chunk of the second, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and I were very pleased with the way the story was coming together," Jackson said in a statement.
"We recognized that the richness of the story of 'The Hobbi't, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of 'The Lord of the Rings', gave rise to a simple question: do we tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as filmmakers and fans was an unreserved 'yes.'
"We know the strength of our cast and of the characters they have brought to life," the Oscar-winning director continued. "We know creatively how compelling and engaging the story can be and—lastly, and most importantly—we know how much of the tale of Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur would remain untold if we did not fully realize this complex and wonderful adventure. I’m delighted that New Line, MGM and Warner Bros. are equally enthusiastic about bringing fans this expansive tale across three films."

robyrob 07-30-2012, 05:13 PM I am a big fan of the book The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings in general, but I thing its a bit much to spread it out over 3 films
the original version of The Hobbit is 310 pages, The Lord of the Rings, with all 3 volumes is usually between 1000 and 2000 pages, depending on print size and version. there is way more material in the LOTR and it really needed to be 3 long movies (which it was). The Hobbit is meant to be a fast read and much simpler version of basically the same story.
JamesG 09-01-2012, 02:52 PM Third Hobbit Film Sets Release Date
8/31/2012
by Pamela McClintock
Warner Bros. and New Line have set July 18, 2014, as the release date for the third film in Peter Jackson's ambitious The Hobbit trilogy.
Additionally, the second film has been retitled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The third film will take the title that was previously assigned to the second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
Warners is banking big on the trilogy. And, in sharp contrast to Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the second and third Hobbit pics will open within seven months of each other.
(The Lord of the Rings pics opened a year apart, at Christmas)
“We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films," Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said in a statement.
"Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure."
Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of international distribution, added:
"'The Hobbit: There and Back Again' will be an action spectacle and an emotional conclusion for this already much-anticipated trilogy. Opening in the summer will maximize playability for what promises to be an event film for fans the world over."
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens Dec. 14 of this year, followed by Desolation of Smaug on Dec. 13, 2013.
