howierules86 06-17-2011, 06:53 AM I thought seasons 1-3 of FM were the best. Season 1 (1989-90) was what Rezny described as #1, Seasons 2 & 3 (1990-92) were what Rezny described as #2, but starting in Season 4, Steve Urkel started getting the majority of ridiculous gadget/invention/whatever storylines, and the quality of writing went seriously downhill then (save for very few episodes). Also, the Carl & Steve getting trapped in the middle of nowhere storylines got old fast as well.
frazetta 06-18-2011, 12:17 AM I thought the show went downhill after they got rid of all the Rodney/Murtaugh/Weasal/Waldo-type characters. They carried the show for me.
I tended to avoid the post-Waldo re-runs on Nick-at-Nite.
MrCleveland 06-18-2011, 04:52 PM I liked the 1990-1996 Seasons.
Urkel was popular, but he didn't get TOO far. But the Last Episode was okay...though the 1996-1997 Season really made the show unwatchable, that and when they killed the theme song!...

(I HAD to make it a link to YouTube because I CAN'T show it on here)!
Bronson 09-11-2011, 11:50 PM I liked the show best when it was about the Winslow Family just like on the Cosbys when it was about the family. Once that ended, it stopped being interesting for me.
Jessica 09-15-2011, 07:01 PM It became too much like a science fiction show with Steve Urkel's all machines. But each sseason had some erally good episodes anyway. But the best seasons was in my opinion 2-4. The last episode wasn't that bad.
MurphyCarmichael 09-26-2011, 08:25 PM I liked it better in the beginning when it was about the Winslows. Once it got to be all about Steve Urkle and all his crazy inventions and then him turning into Stephan, I didn't really like it as much. It did seem more of a science fiction show about some kid and his inventions. I liked it better as more of a family show centered around the Winslows.
floyd2006 09-28-2011, 02:55 PM I liked it more in the first season when it was about the winslows and before it became the urkel show. Wish they could have done a spinoff about urkel then kept it all about the winslow family like they did in the beginning.
Gabgirl 10-02-2011, 04:27 AM I liked the show the best when it included the entire Winslow family(including Judy), with a little Steve Urkel. While I really like Jaleel White, the show really became annoying when his character became the focal point. I've always had a feeling that was bothersome with most of the cast....especially JoMarie Payton(considering it was her spin-off from Perfect Strangers).
Furienna 11-21-2011, 08:47 AM So once again, it's up to me to provide an alternative view on this show.
I don't get why so many of you dislike the later episodes. You complain about it becoming "The Urkel show", but the Winslows were still around, and most episodes (if not all of them) had a sub-plot, where none of Jaleel White's characters was involved. Reginald VelJohnson, Darius McCrary and Kellie Shanygne Williams all stayed on for all nine seasons, and the best plots of that last season had nothing to do with Steve, Stephan or Myrthle. And I personally wouldn't have cared, if every single episode for all nine seasons had been all about Steve making an invention, as long as he had stayed with Myra instead of dumping her for that shallow bitch Laura. Because that was what killed the show for me.
90sfan 11-23-2011, 07:30 AM I did enjoy every season, it wasn't I disliked the later episodes.
comedyfreak 11-23-2011, 10:02 AM I liked the earlier shows best during the last season you could tell Jaleel had outgrown the character. BTW the show lasted 10 seasons.
Furienna 11-24-2011, 04:37 PM No, it was nine seasons. They thought about doing a tenth season, but it never happened.
James 12-28-2011, 02:13 PM I'll say 2, and to a lesser extent 3 since I couldn't stand Myrtle.

The Winslows aren't supposed to be in sub-plots. The name of the show is "Family Matters", not "Urkel Matters." What, should the Keaton family take a backseat to Skippy on Family Ties?

I'll buy that. Besides, seasons one and two are my favorites.

I guess that's what happens on some TV shows, when one character becomes so popular. Fonzie did the same thing on "Happy days". But like I said earlier, three of the Winslows stayed on for all the nine seasons (and even JoMarie Payton only missed half a season), and there was (almost) always a storyline, that had nothing to do with Steve or Stephan or Myrthle. As a matter of fact, in the the 9th and last season, I prefer the storylines, where Steve isn't involved, because I hate him in that season. I like the storyline about Eddy becoming a cop and 3J being adopted by Carl and Hariette. The only Urkel-related storyline, that I like in that season, is the cousin OCD episode.

tjays 06-30-2012, 02:59 AM Both were good but I prefere the later seasons. Urkle made the show pop. They still had the family element though. That's one of the things I loved about it. Urkle had such great chemestry with Carl. They were so funny together.
Buffyboy323 06-30-2012, 05:01 PM My pick is #2. The show was at it's peak during seasons 2-5. There was a good balance of Urkel and the Winslows during that time. I didn't like when the Winslows dominated the series in the beginning, nor did I like when Urkel dominated it later on. I thought the middle years were best.
TVFactFan 06-30-2012, 10:11 PM The strong era of the show was 1991-1995
