I was watching a AITF ep tonight and Mike was happy about getting a promotion and stated he and Gloria was moving to Minnesota. And the scene below

Edith-"Isn't that the place that Mary Tyler Moore keeps losing her hat?

Mike-"Yeah Mom but it's a great place"

Edith-"Well Rhoda and Phyllis didn't stay there"

LOL

Why no dvd's?

Because before I invest money in a show I need to know if I will like it first. This has worked with the shows below

Seinfeld
George Lopez
The Office
All in the Family

I totally understand why you wouldn't want to spend $$$ on a show before you know if you're going to like it. What about seeing if you can borrow if from you local library. Here in NYC, you can even put in a reserve for a DVD and have it delivered to your local branch. This is another way you could "preview" it for free.

It really is a fine show. You should check it out free somehow. (How could so many of us be wrong? - it really is an AWESOME show)

These are the reasons I think I will like the show.

John Amos was a character on the show in the early seasons

I like workplace comedies

That's why I think this may work for you as a "blind purchase" I mean didn't you buy the dvd to "That's My Mama" blindly? Even so, my offer still stands if you want to sample a couple of seasons.

Or you could just watch episodes on Hulu, or buy some on iTunes. At least that's cheaper than buying a whole season blindly.

Yes and also... something that just occurred to me... episodes are also now on Youtube. :)

That might not be a good place to start for someone who's not familiar with the show. If I had only seen episodes from the first two seasons of TMTMS, I wouldn't like it. I don't think it really developed into the classic we remember until the third season. In fact, I bought all the seasons except the first, because I really don't like the first season at all. But I absolutely love seasons 3-7. IMO, this show got better and better each season and the last couple seasons were phenomenal. That being said, I see The Office on his list. That's also one of my favorite series and I'm buying all the seasons. I think anyone who likes The Office would love TMTMS.

How did the show last if the first two seasons were weak?

I enjoy the first 2 seasons, however I do agree with some of the episodes being weak.
The problems with some of first 2 season episodes (or maybe the first year and a half) is that there are too many episodes that centered around the guest star and MTM's supporting cast is really not part of the storyline. There is the episode with Mary's cranky hospital friend, her childhood camp friend, the chain letter episode etc.
I do prefer the first four seasons though, because I really dread when Rhoda and to a lesser extent Phyllis leave the show. I might be the only person that posts here that doesn't care for Sue Ann while Georgette was so-so.
In MTM's oringal run, the show was in the top 20 seasons 2-4 and No. 11 season 5.

How did the show last if the first two seasons were weak?

I wouldn't say it was weak the first two seasons, it was just not my cup of tea. It was mostly focused on Mary and Rhoda and was basically -- excuse the expression -- a chick show. The office environment was more or less a place Mary would go to discuss her domestic issues with Lou and Murray. Over the course of the series, that situation sort of reversed itself whereby her home environment became the place she'd go to discuss with Rhoda and Phyllis her work issues. That's not to say the domestic situations ended after the second season, they just became less of a focus, and the characters from the office became more deeply integrated into those plots. I'm generalizing here, but there was a trend.

I think the change started happening when they started more fully developing the Ted Baxter character. In the beginning, there was no emphasis on Ted. His character was pretty one dimensional: he'd walk into the room, drop a silly line, then walk out. This was something that irritated Ted Knight and, thankfully, he eventually got his way and his character became very well rounded with much more screen time, and there were even many episodes that revolved around him. This was one of the best things that ever happened to this show. Then they brought on Georgia Engel as his girlfriend, Georgette, in the third season, which brought even more focus to Ted. Another turning point was when the hilarious Betty White joined the cast as Sue Ann Nivens in the fourth season (another of my favorite characters). By the time Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman left the show for their own series, the transition was pretty flawless because Mary's work life had become the focus.

One final change that changed the nature of the show was the Mary Richards character herself. In the beginning, she was portrayed as a sugary sweet character who never seemed to get upset and was a little too perfect -- too perfect and too nice to be funny. Over time, she became bolder, began to stand up to people when necessary (in her own tactful way), and showed she wasn't always perfect. Quite simply, she became more interesting and funnier. That's the thing about the first couple seasons, it was a well written "sweet" show that wasn't terribly funny (being a funny show didn't seem to be the emphasis). But over time, through character changes and drawing out the full personalities of these characters, it became one of the funniest series ever.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show is one of the very few TV shows that, to me, improved upon itself each and every season. Even if some feel that season 7 started to show its age, I still feel that it is an outstanding season and it really allowed the production team to be free and do some fantastic stories/scenes it may not have done before. (Mary in the bathtub, Lou and Mary's date, and perhaps my favorite scene from the series - Sue Ann's bedroom!)

OH Nuts!

Everyone has their own take. I personally LOVED the show, EVERY SINGLE EP from day one to the very end. Solomon, the show really is worth checking out. Start anyplace. See if the libs in Philly have it.

Rhoda was pretty good, but the Mary Tyler Moore show is BETTER. I'll never forget how much I'd look forward to it each Saturday. Try to get your hands on some eps (for free)
