View Full Version : Which do you prefer: The Addams Family or The Munsters, and WHY?
Paula 12-31-2001, 03:45 PM I know it's a little unfair to post this topic at The Addams Family message board, but I figured that there might be a few Munsters fans who come here.
Personally, I prefer The Addams Family much more than The Munsters. I just think that the writers of the The Addams Family were much more creative in putting the show together...the characters and theme song ROCK!
Anyone else.....which do you prefer and why?
cablejockey 01-01-2002, 12:59 PM I used to watch both shows but prefered the Addams Family. The writing seemed a little smarter than what was on the Munsters. Gomez and Morticia were like forerunners of the Goth movement of the past 10 yrs or so. Lily and Herman, though funny, were more like the Beverlyhillbillys of the spooky world. The Addams had a peculiar but hip sense of humour for the 60s.
Pitooey 01-01-2002, 08:15 PM I grew up watching both too, but if I had to choose my vote goes to The Munsters. I laughed louder with the Munsters. I do like the Adams family especially Lurch, but I had to choose.
17Mar59 01-11-2002, 09:36 PM This is basically one of those Apples versus Oranges things.
though my vote would also go to The Munsters, just because
Fred Gwynn as Herman was hysterically funny.:)
Mysty Eyes 02-04-2002, 11:33 PM When I was watching the shows I much preferred the Addams Family. They were classier and "ookier."
The Munsters were more commonplace. But through the years I've come to love those "ordinary" folks. :p
One of the things I really loved about the Addamses was that they knew they were different, and revelled in that fact. :eyes2: It seemed that the Munsters never knew they were different.
I'm certainly not the biggest fan of either one of them, but I have always liked The Munsters better because it was just more flagrantly funny. While both series had their running jokes, the Addams Family's was too repetitive-- the "thing" and that noose to "ring" for Lurch would always appear right there wherever the action happened to be. And even though I never saw ALL the AF eps, Gomez hearing 'French' and kissing up the lady's arm got sickening. How many times can you laugh at the same thing?
But for me it really comes down to this: The Addams Family was more of a satire, and the Munsters was more of a spoof. And since the only reason I would watch such a show is for laughs, the spoof wins it.
The Addams Family because Morticia and Gomez had such a great romance!!!!!!!!!!!! A kind I always wanted and never found!!!!!!
tvtator 11-07-2003, 01:47 AM The Addams family. It's kooky and funnier. It has that sardonic wit that I like. The theme, I agree is cooler.
tvtator 11-07-2003, 01:49 AM One more thing I agree with whoever said The Addams Family was satire, that's what made it funnier than The Munsters. It was so cleverly done.
[-Kelsey-] 11-07-2003, 03:15 PM I haven't seen The Munsters before but I love The Addams Family :D
The Modfather 11-07-2003, 06:18 PM Munsters :D
AquaHarmony 11-11-2003, 11:45 AM I have thought about this, and I liked the Addams Family show better. The characters where way more cooler, and they had some great storylines. I loved Morticia and Gomez's romance, I loved Pugsley's blank stare and Lurch! Lurch was the coolest organ player I know! LOL.

Same here! The Addams Family also seemed a bit more sophisticated than the Munsters. I also loved the house & furnishings. When I was a child I remember seeing Ted Cassidy dressed up as Lurch. He was autographing pictures at the local mall. He was scary looking,,,,,with his towering height and gruesome makeup!
CarJackSnyder 12-20-2003, 11:03 PM I liked The Addams Family!!!! To me it was a lot funnier than the Munsters.
Tweety 12-28-2003, 12:35 AM Growing up, I liked the Munsters better, for some reason...my brother and sister both preferred the A Family...
I thought both theme songs were great...
Seeing both of them as an adult, I think that the Addams family is probably a better written show. Fred Gwynne is my favorite individual character, he played Herman perfectly...
Both shows had a lot of imagination, and certianly there hasn't been anything like them on TV since...
I see the Munsters now and then on TV Land, but a few weeks ago, a station (I think it was Hallmark) ran a weekend marathon of the Addams Family, and those shows were just hysterical...
I just think the A F is better written than the Munsters, although both shows were performed excellently by all of the actors...
Still, I can watch pretty much any episode of either show, any time it's on...I love 'em both...they don't make em like that anymore!
I grew up (in the 90s) loving and obsessed with The Munsters reruns on Nick @ Nite. Addams Family was never run around this time so I never gave that show a second thought. However, after viewing the entire weekend marathon on Hallmark over Halloween, I'd have to say...The Addams Family! I agree, the writing is just alot better, and there are more "common" sitcom type jokes than in The Munsters. I still love the Munsters and always will, but I'm thoroughly enjoying TAF right now...:)
LordJim 01-27-2004, 07:18 PM I've always felt The Addams Family was written and acted a bit better than The Munsters. Just watch Carolyn Jones' portrayal of Morticia as opposed to Yvonne DeCarlo's portrayal of Lily. Lily is always nervously waving her arms and she moves much closer whenever Herman etc. is speaking, looking up in keen anticipation. Morticia is cool, calm, and collected.
The Munsters are fairly generic representations of classic monsters (ie sitcom monsters), whereas The Addams Family is just very eccentric. That, to me, is much more exciting. Herman's fits of jumping up and down, breaking things sounds funny, but it usually ends up turning me off. The Addams House is more exciting, though The Munsters have a cooler address.
And the Addams' have much more exciting family relations.
x3 Taylor x3 02-04-2004, 03:46 PM Thats really hard..they both rock!! If I had to chose though..umm..uh...uh i guess that Addams Family..for the writing, the actors, and the THEME SONG!!
NostalgiaAce777 07-20-2004, 11:10 PM The Addams Family Hands Down. I can relate to their eccentricity, my family was a little bizarre too, but I guess everyone may thing their family is a bit bizarre.
I think it would be neat to live in their hous or have a house that had all kinds of neat brick-a-brack, and novelties, although I am not crazy about the torture methods for relaxation.
I am not too crazy for the Munsters. I think they were a bit too looney.
*Bela Lugosi* 08-04-2004, 06:47 PM The Munsters definitaly! :p
munster_fan!?! 08-24-2004, 10:55 AM The munsters!!! Baut I have to say I also enjoy the AF! :)
Lil Lurchie 09-25-2004, 12:16 PM I like both, but I like the Addamses better cuz they rebel against what's normal while he Munsters try 2 fit in and don't seem 2 realize that they can't, no matter what they do. also, the Addamses have Lurch and the Munsters just have Marylin, who I CAN'T STAND!!!!!
pilotguy 08-02-2005, 10:45 PM While I prefer "The Addams Family" to "The Munsters", each series has a different concept.
The Addams Family aren't true Universal Studio-type MONSTERS like the Munsters are, but rather sick, demented people. The Munsters LOOK horrifying, but they act basically like your typical TV sitcom family, while the Addamses look more like "normal" people, but do bizarre, warped things (Gomez crashing his model trains, Wednesday chopping the heads off her dolls, etc.).
If I had to spend the night in either family's house, I think that I'd be a LOT safer with The Munsters!
Zions Mother 08-02-2005, 11:16 PM THE MUNSTERS
Christopher 08-07-2005, 11:17 AM The Addams Family
TV Watcher 08-30-2005, 07:03 PM I prefer the Munsters but the Addams family also had great actors and offered a more mature humored show.

Personally, while I enjoy both shows, I prefer THE MUNSTERS. But it's a matter
of taste. I recall, back in the '60s, someone asked Al ("Grandpa") Lewis to
describe the difference between the two series. He said something like this:
THE MUNSTERS was a weird family doing normal things, while THE ADDAMS
FAMILY were a (more or less) "normal" family doing weird things. That sums it
up nicely. The Munsters looked weird to everyone else but acted like Ozzie and Harriet. In fact, THE MUNSTERS was created by the same guys (Joe
Connelly & Joe Mosher) who gave us LEAVE IT TO BEAVER! THE ADDAMS
FAMILY (as you probably know) was based on Charles Addams' NEW YORKER
cartoons. (In the cartoons, none of the characters had names, though.)
Later, Hanna-Barbera produced two different cartoon versions. The 1970s
version featured the voices of two of the original cast (Jackie Coogan and
Ted Cassidy). The 1991 movie more closely resembled Addams' cartoons
and starred Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston. Its success spawned a second
H-B cartoon series (this time featuring TV's John Astin as Gomez). But the
reason I preferred THE MUNSTERS was the broad comedy over the more
subtle humor of THE ADDAMS FAMILY. As I said, it's a matter of taste.
RADAR O'REILLY 11-30-2005, 03:38 PM :) I like both shows a lot! They're like, boss! Far out! Groovy! Very interesting!
However, when it comes to things like, fanfiction for an example, I merely mix what I can together for a most amazing story! Right now at www.bestcareanywhere.net I submitted 24 chapters of a story I've called
"THE GRAND RAPIDS O'REILLYS" in which RADAR from "M*A*S*H" is the county sheriff & the ADDAMS family & the MUNSTERS are very good friends of his! I even plan to for a theatrcial film version of that peticular story, well,
I plan to have PUGSLEY ADDAMS & EDDIE MUNSTER be in the U.S. ARMY 13TH battalion of the 13TH division of the 5TH SPECIAL FORCES GREEN BERET GROUP during the VIETNAM war, & also EDDIE MUNSTER marries WEDNESDAY therefore making both the ADDAMS family & the MUNSTERS
in-laws to each other in the process! Neat, huh!? Well, at least think about, and besides if a theatrical film version of it ever does get made, well, we'll film on location in the real GRAND RAPIDS, MINNESOTA for good measure!? Bye.I know it's a little unfair to post this topic at The Addams Family message board, but I figured that there might be a few Munsters fans who come here.

Dr.Gee 12-08-2005, 02:13 PM Addams fer sure. There are not quasi monsters(frankenstein, bride of,dracula, wolfman) like the Munsters. Still like them though.

I am laughing at the idea those two as Green Berets!
comedyfreak 12-23-2005, 08:22 AM I grew up watching both in syndication and I prefer The Munsters. The Addams Family was more on the level for adults, while The Munsters were aimed at kids. Herman being a big kid himself, I use to have dreams of being in the Munster home and getting to go down into the dungeon.
Get a jump on Halloween with our Munsters vs. Addams Family feud http://avc.lu/1Xk7Yk9
'80sSitcoms 10-21-2015, 04:46 PM I've never really understood the "which one do you like better" argument; I really enjoy both :)
scrapple 10-21-2015, 05:41 PM It seems like there will always be two eternal feuds: "The Munsters" vs. "The Addams Family", and "Bewitched" vs. "I Dream Of Jeannie". Although the second one has a clear winner to me, I've never been able to decide on the first.
PracTz 10-22-2015, 05:34 PM As much as I liked the romance between Gomez and Morticia, I preferred the Munsters because it always seemed one could relax there and, once you met them, they'd make you feel welcome in their home whereas the Addamses would just do their best to deliberately intimidate to scare you off.
king of comedy 10-22-2015, 06:13 PM The Munsters
Babalu 10-25-2015, 11:19 PM The Addams Family was much more clever. The Munsters was stupid funny like Gilligan's Island. When you're a kid, that's good enough. But I always liked the Addams Family better.
kclj520 01-07-2016, 02:50 PM I will always love the Munsters best, but The Addams Family definitely had its funny moments. The single panel cartoon drawings from Charles Addams were the greatest, even better than the show in my opinion!
OH Nuts! 01-08-2016, 12:29 AM While I like both, I have to say I like the Munsters much more.
Bonniegirl 01-08-2016, 12:36 AM I always preferred the Munsters!
Hazel Anyday 01-08-2016, 07:24 PM The Munsters is still my #1 favorite. But my opinion has changed on Addams Family, as a kid I didn't really like Addams Family, watched a few episodes I'm sure, but was never a fan. BUT recently (last year, in fact) I watched the whole series & found it to be extremely enjoyable, funny and loaded with warmth toward the family members. It's a show I was surprised to see how much the parents cared for each other and also for their kids. It was an all for one, one for all attitude amongst the family, & I didn't expect so much warmth and love in this show. So I definitely like Addams Family now and, like others, I see no reason for this Munsters Vs. Addams Family contest. Same for Bewitched vs. Jeanie, but I guess they'll always be unfairly pitted against each other.
Bewitched is my overwhelming favorite, by the way when compared to Jeannie. I was never a fan of Jeannie as a kid either, but 3 years ago I decided to give it a chance & watch the whole series for the first time (just like I did for Addams Family last year). I was most shocked to see Jeannie laughing and truly enjoy putting her master in real jeopardy and extreme life threatening danger. Dangling from a cliff, in a jungle with a lion attacking, freezing to death on a mountain top, etc. each time it was Jeannie herself who put Master in these life threatening situations. Sam would NEVER put Darrin in a life threatening situation and even worse Jeanie would laugh hysterically at her master screaming in terror for help, this is something Sam would NEVER do. So this was shocking to see. After seeing this, I can say I am NOT a fan of Jeanie, the years did not change my mind on this series the way the years changed my mind on Addams.

Same here!!! I was always a big fan of the Munsters, not at all of the Addam's family! I can't say why? Actually I've never really watched many Addam's family eps. And I never was a fan of Jeannie either. I like Bewitched much better. Although I have watched Jeannie eps recently to check it out again, It's still not my cup of tea! Maybe I should check out the Addams family, maybe like you, I would like it now! ;) :)
Hazel Anyday 01-08-2016, 07:55 PM You have the same opinion I had 4 years ago before I gave Jeannie and Addams another chance seen from adult eyes now. I think if you give Addams another chance you may be as surprised as I was at the warmth displayed amongst the family for each other. Also it's loaded with adult humor that would go over the head's of kids. So it's funny like Munsters but also very warm. However you may be more repelled and turned off by Jeanie seeing it now even more than when you were a kid and didn't like it, for perhaps reasons you didn't know.

You are so right on Jeannie. I can't stand it now. Bewitched was always better because it had superior writing and Sam was much more likeable.

I see no reason to choose, love them both, and Sam or Jeannie? Good Lord, I wouldn't put either out of the car.
:D
Edison 01-31-2016, 03:44 AM Both fantastic, very, just drawn more to...
Rookielove 09-15-2016, 03:00 PM Bewitched is my overwhelming favorite, by the way when compared to Jeannie.
When Jeannie's master was dangling from a cliff, that was a misunderstanding. Major Nelson gave Jeannie a book to read about Genies and he told her to follow the instructions. But it was a book about torturing your master. Jeannie tried to tell her master this but he wouldn't listen and he told Jeannie to do what was instructed in the book. She didn't want to do it.
As for the lion attacking in the jungle, that was not Jeannie. It was her sister impersonating her. And I don't remember anything about Major Nelson freezing to death.
Well, Samantha and Darrin were married so it was a different relationship. Jeannie and Major Nelson were not married. However, married or not, that did not stop Samantha from allowing her husband to go out in the rain and fix a flat tire because she refused to help him (episode Twitch or not to Twitch). Darrin asked her to help him change the tire, but she refused to do any witchcraft due to her ego. Darrin could of caught pneumonia and died, but Samantha refused to help, which was selfish. I thought that was a dangerous situation. And Darrin was constantly threatened by Samantha's family. Why didn't Samantha really put her foot down and stop allowing them to come over and torture her husband if she was such a good wife?
Also, she tricked Darrin into marrying her by not telling him that she was a witch. Then she promised not to use any witchcraft, but she constantly disrespecting her husband by sneaking and using magic behind him back. She also would laugh at Darrin when her relatives would use witchcraft on him. Samantha is Darrin's wife and I thought that was disrespectful.
Rookielove 09-15-2016, 03:04 PM You are so right on Jeannie. I can't stand it now. Bewitched was always better because it had superior writing and Sam was much more likeable.
I disagree. I thought Jeannie had superior writing. And Jeannie was much more likeable.
Rookielove 09-15-2016, 03:07 PM The witches presented in Bewitched are fully superhuman, free humans with supernatural powers. The genies presented in Jeannie have supernatural powers, but they are essentially slaves. The only way that the Tony - Jeannie relationship can be balanced, and therefore worthy of humor, is if Jeannie ' s an emotional loose cannon who blinks first and thinks later.
Jeannie was not a slave. Major Nelson set her free. She was with him because she chose to be with him. Jeannie basically did what she wanted to do.
And Jeannie was not an emotional loose cannon. She thought first then blinked later.
Rookielove 09-15-2016, 03:08 PM As for The Munsters or The Addams Family, I liked both equally.
Hazel Anyday 09-16-2016, 10:59 PM And yes, I do remember that Jeanie put Nelson on top of a snowy mountain without a coat left him there to scream in terror for help as he stood on a small ledge of the mountain about to fall and freezing. Jeanie's reaction? Hysterical laugher of course. Nice, huh? Yeah, she's just the kind of woman anyone would prefer over Sam. Right. Having Darrin change a tire is not quite in the same category as being placed in a lion's cage or dangling off a mountain edge holding onto a branch. And then even worse laughing at your "loved one" as he screams for help afraid for his life.
But you do have one good point I agree with, Sam should have done more to protect Darrin from her vicious family who also had no mercy when it came to how they treated Darrin.
vincent 09-17-2016, 01:11 AM I'm a Munsters kind of guy. I'm more into their wacky plot lines, like when Herman became a popular singer. That always cracks me up!!
Rookielove 09-17-2016, 10:20 PM Nice, huh? Yeah, she's just the kind of woman anyone would prefer over Sam. Right.
And Samantha refused to help her husband when he had to change a tire in the pouring rain. He could of gotten pneumonia and died, but she didn't care at all. All she cared about was her own selfish ego. Nice, huh? Yeah, she's just the kind of woman anyone would prefer over Jeannie. Not to mention, she would do things behind Darrin's back even though she lied to him about being a witch and promised to not do her witchcraft behind her back. I don't see Sam as being better than Jeannie. She's just sneaky and pretends.
Darrin was her husband. They took marriage vows, yet Samantha constantly lied and backstabbed him in the back. She didn't respect him at all. I even remembered some episodes with Samantha laughing at Darrin when her relatives did something to him even though Darrin was upset.
Having Darrin change a tire is not quite in the same category as being placed in a lion's cage or dangling off a mountain edge holding onto a branch. And then even worse laughing at your "loved one" as he screams for help afraid for his life.
That episode was when Major Nelson demanded that Jeannie do everything in the Genie manual. Jeannie didn't want to do them, but Major Nelson demanded that she do it. It was a misunderstanding. Also, Jeannie's sister would impersonate her, so that might be the episode you are talking about. And laughing or not, Samantha allowed her "loved one" to risk getting pneumonia which could of killed him. And she constantly allowed her "loved one" to be threatened and abused by her family.
Bonniegirl 10-29-2017, 02:26 AM Same here!!! I was always a big fan of the Munsters, not at all of the Addam's family! I can't say why? Actually I've never really watched many Addam's family eps. And I never was a fan of Jeannie either. I like Bewitched much better. And I'm so glad I did check out the Addam's family again!;) I LOVE it now!! And it is hard to say which I like better the Munsters or the Addam's family!? I'm looking forward to catching some Addam's family eps. on the Halloween marathon on Antenna! ;)
RetroGuy2000 10-29-2017, 02:52 AM The Addams Family had much better scripts and premise. The Munsters often felt like Gilligan's Island with monsters.
1960'sTVfan 10-29-2017, 12:08 PM Both shows have merit, but overall I think The Munsters is the funnier of the two shows. The Munsters tends to go more for bellylaughs while The Addams Family humor is more subtle/cerebral.
I was surprised when I learned that the guys who created Leave It To Beaver, Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, also created The Munsters. Two very different types of shows. One is a down to earth, clean cut, family sitcom, and the other is a far out, wacky sitcom with a family of monsters.
cablejockey 10-29-2017, 12:21 PM The Addams family was darker and somehow cooler to my younger self watching it in the 60s. The Munsters were more fun.

(Just kidding ;)
Bonniegirl 11-01-2017, 12:23 AM I'm a long time fan of the Munsters AND a new fan of the Addams family ! I literally have only started watching it within about a month or so! Was so happy to be able to see the marathon today!!! ;)
I can honestly say I really love this show and I still love the Munsters too!:)
I will put it this way , I know I'm not original cause other posters have said the same thing pretty much! ;)
Munsters is really wholesome, adorable, corny humor which I love and I can see why I preferred this one as a kid ! :)
Addams family is more off the wall, way more adult humor!:D And they had more characters ! ;)
I STILL can't say which I like better? Let's say Munsters are my old loyal friends, :) and The Addam's are like my new exciting friends !!;) Love them both just sort of differently! ;)
Bonniegirl 11-01-2017, 12:37 AM Watching more Munsters now, and back to thinking it's a tie. Al Lewis is a giant of comedy.
Yeah That is true ! Grampa /Al Lewis) ROCKED!!! So did Herman ! They made the show for me!!! ;)
But than Lurch was AWESOME !!! And Gomez too!!! My two favorite Addams characters ! ;)
Lily vs. Morticia? I can't really say either ? I like them both! ;)
So that leaves just Eddie and Marilyn vs. Pugsley, Wednesday, Grandma & Uncle Fester (also Cousin It and thing) ! So there is where the edge kind of goes to the Addam's ! ;) They had SEVERAL really good supporting stars which made it really diverse and cool! !! ;) And the Munsters (even though they were a strange family) the feel was more of another wholesome family sitcom! ;)
