View Full Version : Computer Tricks
Janice 01-31-2011, 11:17 PM Last week I showed my husband a handy feature on the computer. It's when you hold down the Control key, and the wheel on top of your mouse can minimize or maximize what's on the computer screen.
He loved it and asked me if I had any more tricks. I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where we share computer features.

When you play videos on Quicktime player and pause them using the
spacebar and click on the right and left arrow buttons, it moves the
video in slow motion forward and backward, which is pretty cool.
robyrob 01-31-2011, 11:35 PM there are tons of handy keyboard shrtcuts - here's a list of most of them:

Janice 02-01-2011, 12:26 AM On my computer, when I put the cursor over a thread title, it allows me to read a bit of what's inside the thread. My husband doesn't have that feature or it's not activated. I went to CP, then mouse and looked around but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know? His computer is older than mine, so maybe that's it?

you might want to make sure he has Java installed and up-to-date

Marvo301 02-01-2011, 05:14 PM This morning I came across something on the internet where the print was too small to read. I remembered Janice's trick with the control key and the mouse roller. I tried it and it worked! I was able to enlarge the print and read it! Thanks Janice!

Don't take the fun out of it. I was counting on you to list some super cool tricks.
Thanks for the advice on Java. I'll try that later.

You're welcome, Marv. My husband loves it because he's a coin collector. He buys and sells coins at eBay and a few other specialty sites. He can see the hair in Lincoln's nostrils using that feature.
JamesG 02-01-2011, 06:25 PM I didn't know that the keyboard does that.
My mouse has a button on the side of it that magnifies/minimizes the screen.

its weird because I know most of the common keyboard shortcuts by heart, so I don't even think about it when i use them - I often have people stop me when I'm doing something and ask me "HOW did you do that?" - and I have no idea what they're talking about.
Family Ties Forever! 02-01-2011, 10:37 PM If you want to highlight something using the keyboard hold down the shift key and use the left or right arrow key.

That did the trick! I was prompted to removed a couple of older versions of Java, then download the new one. Thanks for the tip. I appreciate it.

glad to hear it worked :)
Java updates are so poorly implemented; most people's PC's end up having several older versions of Java stuck on there just waiting to cause problems.
Janice 05-10-2011, 02:51 PM The entire planet probably knows this, but when you hit Ctrl and N, a new page comes up.
Family Ties Forever! 05-10-2011, 05:38 PM ^I didn't know until you mentioned it to me.
robyrob 05-10-2011, 07:11 PM for any programs that you use frequently, you can create your own keyboard shortcuts to them - find the program on the Start menu under All Programs, right-click on it and open the Properties menu - in the box that says "Shortcut Key" hold down any combination of control - shift - alt and letter keys to create your custom shortcut combination
I usually set this up on any computer I use for CTRL + SHIFT + C for Calculator, CTRL + SHIFT + N for Notepad, and other programs I use frequently
cleverfun3000 05-10-2011, 10:09 PM When copying and pasting, you don't' have to click on the drop menu, then click on copy. Then click again on paste when you are ready to insert what you copied. From now on just use CONTROL+"C" when you want to copy and CONTROL +"V" when you are ready to paste what you just copied.
