I was always curious, because he always looked burned out. The question is, was he burned out from drugs, booze or work???
Marvo301 01-23-2011, 02:20 AM The only time I ever remember Johnny drinking on the the show was for an on air demonstration. A highway patrolman came into the studio with a machine that tested reflexes. Johnny and Venus were having drinks and after each drink the patrolman would test their reflexes to prove that consuming alcohol slows down your reflexes. The only problem was that Johnny's reflexes kept getting faster the more he drank!!
catlover79 01-23-2011, 04:57 PM It was also strongly implied that he smoked dope, but didn't go in for harder drugs. But he also could've been tired a lot, as he always had that coffee mug (that had all his different on-air monikers on it) with him.

Yet, in the pilot episode, he comes into Andy's office talking about how the coffee keeps him sharp as a tack..before dozing off on the couch. "Mind if I lay down?"
catlover79 01-23-2011, 08:39 PM Heh heh heh...love it. We should all have a coffee cup like this one:
catlover79 01-23-2011, 08:40 PM Forgive me, I found that on google images and have no idea why it came out so big here!! :o
Sterling Holobyte 01-23-2011, 10:54 PM I would guess a little of both. He was a hippie type, you know.
MickeyMac 01-25-2011, 06:58 PM Plus he did the morning shift, which means he probably started around 6AM.
catlover79 01-26-2011, 03:35 PM My personal favorite Dr. Johnny Fever quote:
"I don't know who you are or what you want, but I think you should know I've killed a lot of old people in my time and I'm not above doing it again!!"
Miss Lisa 01-27-2011, 08:37 PM I could see why you would ask. It was hinted at that he did do drugs, nothing too hard, most likely marijuana. Then again, you gotta remember the shift he worked. Anyone would be tired working the early morning shift.
catlover79 01-27-2011, 08:57 PM I sure would be!!
Retro4Life 01-27-2011, 09:06 PM Yeah there's no way Johnny didn't do at least pot, and I'd guess a bit stronger stuff in his younger days. At the time of WKRP he was probably weaned off the stronger stuff (if not he couldn't have done his job as well as he did) but I'd imagine he still "indulged" in the wacky weed when the urge hit him.
catlover79 01-28-2011, 12:12 AM ^ Very good assesment!!

Thanks, Monika! :)
catlover79 01-28-2011, 04:59 AM You're welcome!! At least he had the good sense to stop before he became Reverend Jim!!!!
Retro4Life 01-28-2011, 12:21 PM ^ Wow, I bet those two would have some great 60's stories to swap!

I worked the AM shift where I had to be at work at 6AM, which meant I was up between 4:30 and 5AM. Believe me that shift makes you tired and exhausted.

My guess is the "hardest" stuff Johnny probably ever did was maybe LSD, and some other form of hallucengenicts (or however you spell it). I dont think he messed around with the harder stuff like cocaine or heroin.
Keep in mind that was the 60's and quite a few people were experimenting with drugs. There was a lack of knowledge about how harmful that stuff was.
Then again I have met people who haven taken several LSD trips and are perfectly fine, so drug experimentation was a crap shoot basically.

I've been on that shift for over six years now. People think it would be great to be out of work at 2 PM because they assume you will have all of this time to get things done in the day time, but the reality (for me at least) is that I'm wiped out by the time I come home and most of the time require a nap after I arrive.
All in all, I slept better when I worked from 3:45 PM to 12:15 AM. But with that shift you have a rough time making appointments and synching to other people's schedules.

Yeah that was my feeling too. Johnny looks like a mess from the exterior but he's held it together for probably 20 years or more by the time we meet him in 1977 so he can't have been doing stuff like heroin or cocaine.

If they can remember the stories!!!

LOL, yeah. You just KNOW at some point they both were "in a band", and my guess is that they've both taken a cross country road trip at one point or another.
Throw in "Animal" from Lou Grant and I think you've got a series idea!
