View Full Version : I Found A Credit Card. Should I Use It Or Give It Back Where I Found It?

I found a credit card in a neighbor's driveway(we don't know each, other), RIGHT by the main street. It's very easy to say that I found it on the main street, but I saw it firmly in their driveway. I am tempted to use the card, up for my own selfish wants. Should I ask if anyone lives there with the same name on the card or even knows the person on the card? Or should I see the card as a blessing and use up the card to live up my life?

I find it hard to believe that you would even consider trying to use it. Any purchases you make can be traced back to you and I would say that a visit from your local Sheriff's dept would be around the corner. Save yourself alot of grief and return it. The card should have a toll free # on back, call them and explain the situation. Just because you found it in someone's driveway doesn't necessarily mean that it belongs to anyone living there. Someone could have dropped it while passing by.

I know a store that doesn't check ID for credit cards. I could use a disguise and use up the card at that store without it being traced back to me. ;)

Or you could just, you know, do the right thing and not commit theft.

I agree with others give the card back or call it in as lost. The credit card holder might have already reported it as lost. In those situations the credit card company closes the account with that number and they start the process of opening a new account for the holder with a new number.

I went to the neighbor's house, and they told me that no one lived there by that name. I think I'll give it to the police station. :)

I saw this thread yesterday, but didn't reply (obviously), but was thinking about it so I had to reply, lol.

I'm glad you decided to turn it in. I have to be honest and say that I was also shocked that you would even post such a question. (no offense)

But glad you did the right thing. *wink*

this reminds me of a story on our local news earlier this week - some guy got really drunk and robbed a gas station, but when he needed a ride home he somehow called 911 to call a cab - so anyways the cops picked him up, but they didn't give him a ride home.

I seriously hope you are not truly thinking of commiting a major felony and then posting about it on the Internet...

I'd go so far as to say, "I seriously hope you are not truly thinking of commiting a major felony" PERIOD.

I doubt there was even a credit card that was lost. Sounds like somebody needs a little attention, with a BS post like this.

It is a little odd that someone would supposedly find a credit card and then make an online post in order to figure out what they should do (run it up vs. turning it in).

But, if there's one thing that can be learned from this, I would say that if anyone ever actually DOES find a credit card on someone's property, and you're not sure if the name on the card matches the name of a person living at that house, then do call the credit card company using the toll free number on the card, and let them know that you found it. They can immediately close the account, notify the customer that their card was found, and immediately issue a new card for the customer (a standard practice is to Fedex the new card to the customer, so they can get the new card within a day or two).

I've twice found credit cards in the parking lots of shopping centers (the same shopping center, as it happened). Both times, I went to the anchor store (i.e. the biggest store in the shopping center) and turned the card in to a store supervisor. They can both check to see if the card was used at the store that day, and they can contact the credit card company as well.

You can also turn the card in to any bank, and they'll be glad to contact the credit card company, even if it's not their own.

Janice, if you use a stolen credit card you could end up in jail. So if this thread is at all serious, I would think you should return it.

I hope you use it, get caught, and go to jail.

If something is not yours, what gives you the right to take it?

I had a moment of weakness. It's human nature to want to use something we find on the ground.

It's a thief's nature to want to use a credit card they found. In the future, Janice, don't post about breaking the law on this site.

Janice, I agree that Janice Johnson should not have thought about taking the
credit card, but the important thing is she decided to do the right thing and she
deserves credit for doing that. I am proud of her.

You think she deserves credit for not breaking the law? That's ridiculous. It never should have crossed her mind in the first place. I live in a condo complex. Today there was a package from Amazon in the mail area. I guess I deserve praise for not stealing it.

Thinking about doing the wrong thing, and then doing the right thing doesn't make a person special. Doing the right thing and not breaking the law should be automatic.

I've found stuff on the ground that I didn't want to get anywhere near! For example, there's dog _ _ _ _ :)

There was no purpose to bump up a time sensitive thread like this one. We don't need the drama.
