I have been watching Bewitched online for several days now and a couple nights ago I watched an episode that gave me an idea for this thread. I had made it yesterday, and SO was going through updates and the post was never posted. *grr* Anyway...

1.) Eye of the Beholder Season 1

Endora makes a picture from 1682 with Samantha's face on it, display before Darrin. This causes him to wonder how old his wife really is and become depressed on how he will age, but not her. But at the end of the episode, Darrin tells Sam that it doesn't matter how old she is, he loves her anyway.

2.) Charlie Harper, Winner Season 3

An old friend/rival of Darrin's comes over for dinner one night. He is successful, rich and his wife, Daphne, loves to brag about it. Charlie tries to get Darrin to quite his job at MacMann and Tate and be Vice President at one of his companies. While Daphne loves to rub The Stephen's *not so rich life* in Samantha's face.

Sam twitches up a jewelry box with valuable things and a one-of-a-kind mink coat to show off to Daphne. This hurts Darrin and he tells her that he can't compete with her witchcraft. What he can't afford to give her, she can just "zap" into thin air!

Later, Samantha gives Daphne the mink coat, but wants no money for it. Daphne doesn't get it. There is nothing more valuable than "items" to her, but Sam says (after Daphne has walked into the next room, but Charlie hears her) that "yes", there is something *much* more valuable.

3.) A Is For Aardvark Season 1

Darrin sprains his ankle and so not to keep walking up and down the steps, Sam zaps him powers to get whatever he wants. This goes to his head and quits his job, er-- retires, and Samantha tries to go along with it, but neither one is really happy (you can see). They make plans on moving to a new house until the summer.

Then a gift arrives for Samantha that Darrin had bought before all this mess had happened. Roses and a watch. This brings Samantha into tears. And then she sends them back before any of the "hocus pocus" ever started.

All three of these are SO utterly touching and emotional. Are there any other episodes that you guys can think of?

Those are all great episodes - really shows the power of true love, and the electric chemistry between EM & DY. Plus, episodes like that are timeless. They are just as meaningful now as they were when they first aired.

Here are a few more (I got each synopsis from The Bewitched Critic because he phrased them better than I do!):

"What Every Young Man Should Know" (Season 2): http://bewitchvic.tripod.com/072.html

"If They Never Met" (Season 4): http://bewitchvic.tripod.com/127.html

"I Confess" (Season 4): http://bewitchvic.tripod.com/135.html

It always gets me in "Eye of the Beholder" when Darrin is sitting by himself on the bench, all alone in the dark, thinking...he was so depressed. And then when Samantha came and he raised his head...it reminds me so much of the type of things I do whenever I'm in a pensive mood.

Yes...and you can see tears in Dick York's eyes as well. Material things really don't mean a thing - as long as they have each other. Both EM & DY were at the top of their game here.

"Happy 6th. Love, Darrin." (written on the card that came with the roses)

"I love you every second." (the inscription on the back of the watch)

This ep was made over 45 years ago, and people who weren't even born yet are discovering episodes like this and are being moved. THAT is timeless, folks. :D

Well I'm thinking along a similar but slightly different line. One of the most touching episodes to me is when Sam reveals her true identity to an orphan who doesn't believe in Santa Claus. It's from Season One I believe. With Billy Mumy as the disbelieving boy.

But of course in a show THIS GOOD there are many examples..as others have pointed out.

In 'And Then There Were Three', I love the scene where Endora tells Darrin that the baby's born. I think it's touching because it actually shows them being semi-kind to each other.

Do you know what else I hate, Monika? I hate it when other "Bewitched fans" rant about how much they don't like Darrin. They think that he should let her use magic and stuff, but then they'd really be the ones hurting Samantha, because she doesn't really like using magic in the first place!

And if more people would just watch the episodes...watch more episodes like these, and they'd see that he loves her so much that he's willing to do whatever it takes to protect his wife and child, even yell! (And even protecting Endora, sort of, if you really think about it...)

Seriously, people, not many men these days (no offense to nice modern men) would stay with his wife after being turned into a horse? I don't know of very many men these days would cry when their baby daughter was born. I don't know of very many men would help a 12-year-old boy win a soapbox derby, or carry an orphan boy upstairs to bed. He even helps her with the dishes sometimes.

If people wouldn't be so quick to judge...if they would take time to watch...then they would see that this is a true man with a sensitive soul and a beating heart!!! Even Larry Tate had a soft spot for his wife and little Jonathan!

*Whew!* I'm done! (Wow, I'm ranting and carrying on about a character on TV...I need a hobby. )

Great post! You got me thinking... you know, Dick York's Darrin is a pretty emotional guy. Everyone usually thinks of "angry Darrin," but there's so much more. For example, when he's mad, he's furious. When he's happy, he's ecstatic. When he's calm, he melts into a pool of butter. It's very sweet. I think York brought a lot of depth to the character, provided there was opportunity to in the script. Some of the later season eps had that less. Even York disliked Darrin being "so damned mad at Samantha all the time." Maybe that's why when situations in scripts came for Darrin to be more sympathetic, York really brought it out.

I had lent out my copy of Dick York's autobiography to a friend in high school, and we both had the same reaction when we finished it- tears, and "I think I fell in love with him." He just came across as a genuinely nice, sweet guy who loved his family and then had all these horrible things happen to him, but didn't blame anyone but himself. Contrast this to William Froug's autobiography (3rd season producer of "Bewitched"), where Froug paints himself as a victim (with MUCH less to complain about than York had reason to) and comes across as sour grapes. He disliked working on "Bewitched," but even HE liked York.

This one is called A Vision Of Sugar Plumbs from season 1 and it's my favorite episode. Another fave is Samantha Meets The Folks with Aunt Clara it was emotional Darrin didn't want her around because of his parents. Another emotional ep is the one with the birth of Tabitha when Darrin and Endora hug and both cry.

Yup!

Liz Montgomery:
WHY MEN COMPARE HER TO THAT “OTHER LIZ.”
by Helen Martin
TV Picture Life
March 1965

Even her TV husband, handsome Dick York, finds it difficult sometimes to follow directions, which call on him to "be strong! … boss her around! … raise your voice!" He protests, "I hate to yell at Elizabeth because there’s something about her that reminds me of my own wife, Joan."

Like millions of male TV viewers, Dick York finds it difficult to be angry with Liz Montgomery. He can’t help feeling protective toward her. For her male fans, Liz Montgomery is the new dream girl of the home screens—just as the other Liz [Taylor] is the passion flower of the big screens.

UPDATE: Okay, now back to the episodes. I found the episode, "A Touch of Midas" to be a little emotional. When that fuzz toy started selling, Darrin went out of his way to get things (very expensive things) for his wife and child. He wants so much to do good things for them, he sometimes goes too far and overdoes it. This may come from the way he must have lived as a child. For more information, here's the thread I started about that subject not too long ago: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=276477

To Me, I think the episodes that were touching were:

1) A is for Aardvark- obviously

2) A Vision of Sugar Plums- the Speech Santa gave was on point!

3) Help, Help Don't Save Me- Darrin's love for Sam was more than just a can of soup.

4) A Nice Little Dinner Party

5) Sisters at Heart

6) Aunt Clara's Old Flame- Aunt's Clara's heart

7) Charlie Harper, Winner

8) Tabitha's Very Own Samantha

Been meaning to post these for a couple days:

The Magic Cabin - Season 2

Darrin has been so tired/punchy, he hasn't been able to come up with ONE single slogan. So Larry decides for Darrin and Samantha to go up to his cabin. (One that he hasn't been to in 3 years) When they get there, the cabin is run-down and a disaster.

Darrin finally lets Sam twitch her nose and cause the place to look livable. (Mostly for her health and the baby's) Meanwhile back home, a young couple visits Larry wanting to purchase the cabin. When they arrive at the cabin, the Stephens' aren't there, they are out. Well they come home to find the couple and hear them announce that they are buying the cabin!

Darrin tries to tell Sam that they CAN'T buy it! It's been zapped up by magic! So they try to convince the couple to change their minds. Later, Larry comes up and Darrin has Sam zap it back to the way it was, but when the couple come back, the cabin look nice while the other half looks run-down. Larry agrees to let the couple have the cabin for the down payment of $1,000.

And the ending is cute when Darrin finally gets Sam to zap a half a tank of gasoline, after the car breaks down and he swore her to NO MORE "funny business". -- he he

Samantha Meets The Folks - Season Two

Flashback to when Sam first meets Frank and Phyllis Stephens. They come for a visit and so does Aunt Clara. (Her second appearance)

Yes, a very heart-felt scene in the kitchen.

If They Had Never Met - Season 4

Darrin and Samantha have a fight over witchcraft again, of course. Sam says something about having never met her and he agrees, in a sense. The next thing, he disappears from the room. Endora pops in and says that she has granted the statement and has taken him to a time when if Sam and him had never met.

Samantha and her mother then go back and find that Darrin has become VERY successful in business and yes, engaged to his old flame, Sheila, whose father is the 4th richest man in the world. Samantha is still convinced that he is not happy (or trying to convince herself)

They then travel to the dinner party and watch Darrin come out on the patio pacing and smoking. Sam follows him to a bar and finds him talking to his "bed friend" wondering if he's doing the right thing? The other man leaves and Darrin is left there with the bartender. He says a couple more words and heads out, but not before Sam pops out of the room. Darrin thanks the bartender (twice) and then as he's leaving the place he bumps into a young blonde --- SAMANTHA!! :)

They begin to talk and then Darrin leaves... only to come back, say a few more words, like not to leave before he gets back, and then Sam pops out and back to the present. Endora says she heard the whole thing and pops out before she gets sick, lol.

Darrin is brought back to when before he was zapped out and him and Sam have a cute little moment. :)

Always loved these kinda episodes!! ;)

That is a great scene - but it's actually Sam that spills the beans. Both Darrin and Larry were convinced that Sam was the one expecting. It took a second for it to sink in for Larry, but once it did, he just turned to mush.

One thing about that episode you'll never see today - Louise downing two martinis while pregnant. Then again, they didn't know better in those days. At least I HOPE that was the case.

Hmm. Maybe they didn't know all about it back then, but maybe in that year (1964) it was a suspicion, not yet a proven fact, that alcohol was linked to unhealthy babies. Like when the scientists suspected that too much cigarette smoke was linked to diseases, and they later found out that it was.

Especially when he had a such dopey, petty boss to contend with while dealing with his witchy in-laws at the same time!!

You know something else, you guys? Darrin can be pretty unpredictable, too-but in a good way. For example, try to remember the episodes "Man's Best Friend" and "Cheap, Cheap".

In "Man's Best Friend", he surprised everyone (including the viewers) in the end by revealing that he really had trusted Samantha the whole time. He was just "playing a part" to expose Rodney without any magical help. And what a very convincing part it was; one would certainly think that he really didn't trust her if he hadn't revealed his plan in the end! :)

And in the episode "Cheap, Cheap", his disappointment over Samantha's dress was not because he was being cheap, but because he had bought the same thing for her, as was revealed in the end.

So he's sort of doing the same thing with the "no magic" rule. Underneath the yelling and tenacity, he's really trying to help his wife out and protect her. Tough love, I guess. But not a lot of people realize that because he doesn't actually come right out and say it in the show. It is understandable. Because sometimes we expect to find answers automatically, like when we look up something in a book or on the computer.

But I guess it's just one of those things that you have to figure out for yourself and pay very close attention to all of the details. :winkgrin

Thank you! You never truly know what's going on inside Dar's head!

Or as Endora would say, Dum Dum's head.

Yeah. But in spite of what Endora tries to make her daughter believe, Darrin is perfect for her. I just watched the Charlie Harper episode, and this is one of the episodes that really show that one of his main fears is losing the wife he loves so much. He feels that if she uses her magic to easily get what she wants, she's rejecting him. When he tells her that he can't compete with her witchcraft, you can really see the hurt in his eyes. He's a pretty deep and emotional guy, and that's what's great about him.

And if all of this was in the script, then the character of Darrin Stephens is not much different than the man who plays him. Think about it. ;)

Oh, I agree 100%. Dick York put a lot of himself into the role of Darrin (except for the temper and yelling - DY wasn't like that in real life).

Regarding the alcohol question--------back in the 60's it was well understood that alcohol abuse was harmful, but felt that moderate or infrequent use was ok. Therefore, it would have been normal for the characters to see a pregnant woman getting loaded as rather shocking, while not batting an eye over her having a glass or two of wine.:)

In more recent times, we have a better understanding of potential problems such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and other negative effects on both mother and child.:(

Ironically, in the days before there were good medicines for stopping premature labor, alcohol was sometimes used------it got the mother instantly drunk, but also allowed her to continue to carry the child until it could survive.

Wow, that sounds like something out of a book about medieval times! Thanks for the information!

Even in the late 70s, women on TV were seen knocking back a beer or two on TV. I've seen some old reruns of the now-defunct soap opera Ryan's Hope, and the show's main family, the Ryans, owned a bar. They would occasionally show a pregnant woman drinking a beer or whatnot. Even a doctor would recommend alcohol for a pregnant woman - check out this 1976 clip starting at the 3:02 mark: "Alcohol relaxes the uterine muscles"!!!!

I was watching season 2's "Take Two Aspirin and Half a Pint of Porpoise Milk" last night, and although it's not one of the better episodes, Darrin is SO sweet, worried about, and protective of then-pregnant Samantha in it. He is 100% ready to follow Aunt Clara's crazy ingredient scavenger hunt and doesn't even question going to a witch apothecary, chasing a lady over her ostrich feather, getting arrested, breaking and entering to cut off his client's black Peruvian rose, getting arrested again....
