He sinks three ships, and then "Gomer Captures a Submarine."

Too bad all of them were ours.

Remember Andy Griffith's son, Opie Taylor, form the "Andy Griffith Show"? After getting in trouble in school, eleven-year-old "Opie Joins the Marines."

Unfortunately, he runs away to California from North Carolina, because he wants to be with Gomer Pyle in Sgt. Carter's platoon.

Good plot, with a good ending.

Those Gomer Pyle episodes always makes me laugh. I didn't watch one today but the last one I watched was the one where Sgt Carter goes back home for a weekend & Gomer accidently gets knocked out on the plane & ends up going with him.

I actually do like Sgt. Carter, who has an IQ slightly higher than Gomer's.

In "Cat Overboard," Gomer smuggles a pregnant cat on board a ship because he doesn't want to leave her alone at a time like this.

Only an idiot would return money to the phone company, so guess what happens in "Gomer and the Phone Company."

Gomer tries to help a lonely Sergeant Carter by setting him up for a date with his cousin. But is she ugly or pretty? “Sergeant Carter Dates a Pyle” after dodging his way through a bevy of wrong decisions.

Sergeant Carter keeps losing bets when his men get beaten by another platoon. But when he learns that "Crazy Legs Gomer" is a star runner, he bets heavily--against Gomer.

"Duke Slater, Nightclub Comic," wins a prize for his imitations of Gomer and Sgt. Carter. But he doesn't realize that Sgt. Carter is in the audience.

Gomer's friend Frankie takes Gomer home for the week-end. Neither one realizes that Frankie's parents are desperately trying to get their daughter married off.

Is it "Arrivederci, Gomer"?

It's bad enough when Sgt. Carter breaks up with his girlfriend Bunny. But then, "Gomer the Peacemaker" steps in.

Vince53

Sergeant Carter challenges an obnoxious Navy Chief Petty Officer to a boxing match, not knowing that he's the former fleet champion. And Gomer is unable to prevent "The Grudge Match."

Sgt. Carter is smart enough to recognize a con artist in "Gomer and the Father Figure," but not smart enough to keep from getting conned himself.

Folks, Sergeant Carter IS a nice guy, but he's only slightly more intelligent than Gomer.

Since their father died, Sgt. Carter has taken good care of his younger sister. But he is horrified when she becomes engaged to a friendly non-military type. Wanting her brother's approval for "A Groom for Sergeant Carter's Sister," she starts dating Gomer in order to (successfully) frighten her brother into approving her marriage to her true love.

Gomer uses "Horses and Men" cologne. That figures.

Gomer takes Sgt. Carter with him when Gomer wins "A Vacation in Vegas." The two Marines have widely different views on how to have fun, but after all, it IS Gomer's money.

I'm afraid that I didn't think this one was too funny.

When Sgt. Carter botches up his chance to star in a movie about the Marines, Gomer is there to see that "A Star is Born."

Kindhearted Gomer helps a drunk get home, and then gets blamed for turning him into an alcoholic.

There's a good message in "Show Me the Way to Go home": Don't drink.

"Grandma Pyle, Fortune Teller" teams up with Gomer to foul things up. Sgt. Carter develops a high-pitched voice from one of her "cures," but like her grandson, she saves the day.

Folks, I want to remind you that EVERYONE is welcome to post on this thread. We're getting about twelve "hits" per day, but I'm the only one posting.

$50 says that Sgt. Hacker, by showing patience and understanding, can have Gomer Pyle cook the entire company meal in one week. Can "Gomer Pyle, Super Chef," make the grade?

Vince53

Sgt. Carter goes off for the week-end, forgetting to deliver some charity donations that are in the trunk. So good hearted Gomer takes "The Borrowed Car" without permission and gets into an accident.

As Gomer and Private Duke Slater frantically try to get the car repaired before Sgt. Carter finds out, Carter reports the car as being stolen.

Vince53
01-16-2011, 06:40 PM
A badly-shaken Gomer tries to convince Sgt. Carter that he has seen little men from outer space. Definitely one of their funniest episodes, "Gomer and the Little Men From Outer Space" shows Carter's genuine kindness as he struggles to deal with a man he believes is mentally ill.

Vince53

When Gomer gets tricked into proposing to a con artist, Sgt. Carter exposes the fraud. But now they're suing Sgt. Carter for breach of promise. Fortunately, justice triumphs in the end.

But I liked the way Andy Griffith handled it when Barney Phyffe got engaged to a con artist. When they came in to sue Barney for breach of promise, Andy pulled out his book and started a marriage ceremony, solving the problem on the spot.

It's a shame, really. She and Gomer made such a nice couple.

Headquarters needs a good Sergeant with combat experience to write training manuals, so "Sergeant Carter Takes a Desk Job." But then Carter decides to accept it as a permanent assignment, Gomer has to "straighten" out the situation.

And Father Mulhaney from MASH is doing well. He started out as a recruit with Pyle, and now he's a corporal with a different name.

I LOVE CAROL BURNETT!

When "Corporal Carol" shows up at the base, it's heard to tell when she is funnier: doing her imitation of Sergeant Carter or trying to get romantic with a disinterested Gomer Pyle.

An outstanding actress and comedian, Carol easily steals the show from our favorite Marine, but it's worth it.

A hold-up man needs more than a gun to take on Sergeant Carter, and he realizes that after he wakes up. But fearing that Bunny will find out that he was out with another girl, Carter tells everyone that "Gomer, the Would-be Hero," did it.

Best quote: "Somebody had to do something, and somebody did." Gomer Pyle, describing a hero.

Sgt. Carter taking on an armed man is one of the best scenes I've ever seen on TV.

They did a four week long series about Gomer going to Washington D.C. to perform in a talent show.

The fourth episode is not really that good, as Gomer loses his voice to nervousness. But "The Show Must Go On," and in the last several minutes of the episode, you'll see one of the greatest performances in the history of television.

When a beautiful airhead who can't carry a tune in a bucket takes the stage, Sgt. Carter and Private Slater both hear "Love's Old Sweet Song." But the woman has her heart set on a certain Marine with an IQ that is closer to hers.

Dreams come true if "Gomer, the Beautiful Dreamer" dreams it three times in a row. And he's dreamed that Sgt. Carter will propose to Miss Bunny...twice.

My opinion? What are you waiting for Sergeant? Propose to her!

Sgt. Carter is tormented by guilty nightmares after he pressures Gomer into volunteering for a parachute jump. But "Where There's a Will," Gomer is determined to conquer his fear of heights and jump. Besides, he's made Sgt. Carter his beneficiary if something goes wrong.

There was a moment of good drama when Gomer's chute doesn't open...

Gomer Pyle knows "How to Succeed in Gardening Without Really Trying." Use super-fertilizer. So it's pretty funny when Sgt. Carter plants a large watermelon, loaded with vodka, in Gomer's garden...and then Gomer presents the melon to the colonel.

By the way, Folks, everyone is welcome to post on any Gomer Pyle episode on this thread.

When you go to Hollywood to help film a Marine movie, "All You Need is One Good Break." A petite, judo-trained stunt girl defeats two attackers, and the police mistakenly give Sgt. Carter and Gomer the credit.

Private Duke Slater is suddenly a corporal, and

SERGEANT CARTER OWNS A PAIR OF PINK SLACKS!

"Don't ask, don't tell" is sometimes a good idea.

Vince53

It was good to see Larry Storch (Corporal Agarn from F Troop) back in action. A visiting Latin American military official is a guest of Sgt. Carter's platoon, and Gomer is chose to assist "The Wild Bull of the Pampas."

An outstanding actor in his own right, Larry Storch steals the show, challenging Sgt. Carter to a duel, trying to start a revolution, and trying to control a temper that Donald Duck would be proud of.

After consuming a dinner of spicy cheese served over toasted rye bread, "Gomer, the Welsh Rarebit Fiend" starts walking in his sleep, chewing out a bewildered Sgt. Carter in the middle of the night.

And then Sgt. Carter tries some Welsh Rarebit himself.

Gomer Pyle chewing out Sgt. Carter is funny enough, but a sleep-walking Sgt. Carter meekly accepting it is even funnier.

Gomer's enlistment is almost up, and he has to decide whether "To Enlist or Not to Re-Enlist." Sgt. Carter pulls out all the stops to set up Gomer in a successful civilian life, and...

It was still a good show, but the ending was so obvious that it was a joke.

Sergeants Carter and Hacker compete to be the subject on "The Recruiting Poster," and of course Gomer wins. But the tribute to Marine sergeants was one of the best short speeches I have ever heard.

I didn't like "Lost, the Colonel's Daughter." Wanting his daughter to have a safe date, the colonel has Gomer take her out. So of course she runs off with a wild bunch, and Sgt. Carter tries to help find her.

All ends well, however, as the colonel realizes that he should allow his daughter to run wild.

Well, what do you expect from a man who would let his daughter date Gomer Pyle?

Folks, I want to remind you that everyone is welcome to post on this thread.

Sgt. Carter badly wants a ticket to a football game, and Gomer comes up with "Two on the Bench." But the star player who promised the tickets gets decked during practice and can't recognize Gomer.

After Gomer gets tricked into appearing in a girlie magazine, Sgt. Carter wants to get in on the action, not realizing that the photos are fake.

But eventually, the Sergeant does get into "The Secret Life of Gomer Pyle."

Carol Burnett is back, and she excels once again in "Show Time With Sgt. Carol." Newly-promoted from corporal, Carol desperately needs Gomer for a show, and Sgt. Carter desperately needs him to prepare for a major inspection. The two sergeants are hilarious in a battle of wits, shouting, and pleading, and then Gomer and Carol put on a great five-minute- long singing special.

"Gomer Pyle, USMC" is rip-roaring hilarious. However, it is an episode from the Andy Griffith Show.

Sheriff Taylor is dismayed to learn, too late, that Gomer has enlisted in the Marine Corps. But Gomer is determined to be a man, and after Andy tricks Sgt. Carter into believing that Gomer is the son of General Lucius Pyle, Gomer survives his first day.

After reviewing the episode, the producers made the final decision to move it to the season finale and start the spin-off "Gomer Pyle USMC" the next season.

For the record, there is no such person as Marine General Lucius Pyle.

Getting low gas mileage, Sgt. Carter sells his car to Gomer. But Sgt. Hacker keeps filling the gas tank so they think it gets high mileage.

Sgt. Carter doesn't deserve what happens to him, but Sgt. Hacker, who is guilty of crime when he siphons gas out of the car, deserves everything he gets--or loses.

Not realizing that it is only a joke, Lou Anne is horrified at the sight of "A Tattoo for Gomer." Not wanting to hurt Gomer's feelings, Lou Ann lies that she likes it. And not wanting to hurt Lou Ann's feelings, Gomer lies that he likes it--and then he goes to a tattoo parlor to make it permanent.

After Sgt. Carter scratches a parked car, the owner demands payment for a smashed fender. Is the owner a blood-sucking vampire?

"Gomer, the Privileged Character" feels guilty about getting out of all his work so he can practice for a show. Because he tries to make up for it by working at night, he can't stay awake for the show.

Get ready: Sgt. Carter saves the day for everybody.

For the first time in 3 1/2 years, "Gomer Goes Home." He finds that all his friends are away on vacation, he gets himself robbed, he fixes a getaway car (twice), and he gets himself kidnapped.

The kidnapping really wasn't fair. You see, the robber was a gunman, and Gomer was a United States Marine...

Not bad, but any episode without any interaction with Sgt. Carter (or in this case, the TAGS cast) seems kinda empty. But probably still better than any sitcom on prime-time now, with the possible exception of The Big Bang Theory. I'd give the episode a B-.

Vince53
02-21-2011, 10:26 PM
Good to hear from you, Samme. But what is the TAGS cast?

Meanwhile, anyone who owns a pet knows that "A Dog is a Dog" is just not true. So when the colonel's dog runs away (twice) Sgt. Carter and Gomer find him, but, uhm, er, they find three dogs that look just like him.

Samme

TAGS is commonly written among fans for The Andy Griffith Show.

"A Dog is a Dog" is pure sitcom but still fun. I like the sleazy appartment guy. He plays it well.
Grade: B

Oh, the carefree life of a United States Marine during the height of the Vietnam War!

Gomer has to camouflage a communications truck during war games when three hippies, with IQs similar to his, join him. Talk about a "Meat Head," Bob Reiner, who played Mike in All in the Family, is one of them.

Using their "Flower Power," the three paint one side of the truck with a hippie design, fooling the opposing team and winning the war games for Sgt. Carter's team.

Gomer teams up with an unsuccessful performer, and "Gomer and the Night Club Comic" are a hit. But Sgt. Carter is right: Jerry Van Dyke excels as an unsuccessful comedian who has to learn to succeed without a crutch.

Masquerading as a sailor, a crooked card shark is cheating all the servicemen out of their money. But then he runs into "Gomer the Card Shark," who doesn't know how to play poker.

And, uh, guess who wins?

The dramatic scene near the end was so rip-roaring hilarious that I had to explain it to my wife.

Despite being very high in the ratings, Jim Nabors wanted to quit Gomer Pyle after the fifth season. In the final episode, Gomer is broken-hearted after being chewed out by Sgt. Carter, and he gets himself a transfer.

Cpl. Duke Slater tries to convince a jubilant Sgt. Carter to stop the transfer.

Sgt. Carter's platoon is well on course to win a singing contest, except for one problem: Sgt. Carter is a sorry singer but doesn't realize it.

Gomer gets stuck with the job of telling him "Just Move Your Lips, Sgt. Carter."

After dropping Sgt. Carter off at the airport, "Gomer Minds His Sergeant's Car." First, Gomer leaves the keys in the ignition. Then...

Everything ends well, especially after Sgt. Carter figures out a brilliant way to keep it from happening again. DEFINITELY one of their better end scenes.

When Gomer withdraws his life savings to help buy a gas station in Mayberry, everybody and his uncle is trying to get the money from him. Determined to help Pyle buy the station and get out of the marines, Sgt. Carter Determines to protect Pyle all the way home.

Gomer is still in boot camp; in this early episode, when a trouble-making bully is transferred into Sgt. Carter's platoon. Gomer does everything he can to help the bully, and nothing works...until they have to fight with padded sticks. "Gomer Learns a Bully," and Gomer learns him good.

Gomer is serving as the ammunition man for the mortar crew. He is issued 20 mortar shells, fires 17 shells, and return with 2.

Sgt. Carter gets on the men for all the "Lies, Lies, Lies" they tell about their big dates. And then Gomer insists that he spent the afternoon with glamorous Hollywood star Tina Tracey (There's no such actress, according to the internet).

When Gomer and his platoon return for a barbecue, the butler informs them that Tina is in Europe. Did our man Gomer imagine the whole thing?

"Tina" was played by cute Deborah Walley. Later in Season 5, Jeannine Riley plays starlet "Wendy Sparks." And in an early, b/w episode, Ruta Lee also played a ficticious glamorous star, named "Gloria Morgan."

The series had its share of hotties, the main ones being Barbara Stuart as Miss Bunny and Elizabeth MacRae as Lou-Ann.

You have to love Gomer. When a poor family is stuck because their truck breaks down, Gomer offers to fix it and finds them a place to stay. But Marines keep ordering them out of various Marine facilities, until Gomer finally finds them a "Home on the Range."

Too bad it's the bazooka range.

I love this one. It's unusual when Gomer and Sgt. Carter aren't the best thing about an episode, but the actor who plays the store detective in this is comedy gold. And I've never seen him in anything else. But he's hilarious, whether coming up with a theory on why he thinks Gomer stole the carriage or the guy's mumbling reaction when Carter threations to punch him in the nose. He gave the guy a unique character. The young mother at the end was played by Yvonne Lime, who for a short time in the '50s was a girlfriend of Elvis. She's cute. Episode grade: A+

Vince53
03-18-2011, 07:18 PM
Good research, Samme. Yvonne Lime was also one of the stars in the 1950's classic "I Was a Teen-Age Werewolf." Her career hit its height with the Elvis Presley film, and eventually she became a very successful founder of orphanages and children's home. Seventy-three years old now, she is still active in protecting abused children.

A crooked dance studio tricks Gomer into thinking that he has to sign a contract. Then they trick Sgt. Carter, and there's no way out as long as the studio keeps its end of the bargain...

"Dance, Gomer, Dance" is one of their better ones.

Unless I'm mistaken, Yvonne had been married the late Don Fedderson, whose company produced My Three Sons and Family Affair. I'm not certain of the timing, but this may have made her the mother-in-law of Linda Henning when she was married to Mike (Fedderson) Minor.

She did have quite a few memorable sitcom appearances. Lovely woman!

The men organize some goofy stunts to get Sgt. Carter to re-enlist, but "Sergeant Carter's Farewell to His Troops" sounds final.
